Brewery news World: Heineken to "streamline" its head office and regional offices
Heineken NV said on October 28 that it will "streamline" its head office and regional offices to cut costs as it prepares for an extended period of volatility and uncertainty due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Dutch brewer - which also owns the Sol, Birra Moretti and Tiger beer brands - said it expects a reduction of around 20% in related personal costs. Implementation will begin in the first quarter of 2021.

The company said its current strategic review efforts are focused on shaping the company to emerge stronger from the coronavirus pandemic, as it is exploring how to accelerate and expand its sources of growth while simplifying and right-sizing its cost base.

For the first nine months of 2020, Heineken made a net profit of 396 million euros ($467.1 million), down from EUR1.67 billion a year-earlier.

In the third quarter, organic consolidated beer volume fell 1.9%, against consensus expectations of a 5.9% decline.

The world's second-largest brewer said the pandemic is having a significant impact on its markets and wider business. Continued volatility is expected for the fourth quarter, as many of its markets experience additional waves and fresh restrictions, including bar and restaurant closures, Heineken said. The company said product and channel mix ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Supreme Court dismisses United Breweries India's appeal
The Supreme Court on October 26 dismissed an appeal filed by United Breweries India Limited (UBIL) challenging a Karnataka High Court order directing the Vijay Mallya-promoted company’s liquidation proceedings to clear the dues of over Rs 15,000 crore to the consortium of banks led by the SBI, the Telegraph India reported.

A bench headed by Justice U. U. Lalit refused to interfere with the high court order though senior advocate C.S. Vaidyanathan appearing for UBIL argued that the impugned order was erroneous as he claimed that the company had total assets the tune of Rs 14,500 crore against the Rs 6,000 crore-odd debts owed to the various creditors, including banks.

He further argued that the total dues to the banks was only Rs 900 crore as such even after clearing the debts of the banks and other creditors, the company had enough surplus funds to continue in business.

“Winding up should be the last resort, which should not be readily accepted,” the senior counsel argued before the bench which also included justices Vineet Saran and Ravindra Bhat.Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi appearing for the consortium of banks however, disputed UBIL arguments.

He submitted that the defaulting company owed Rs 15,000 crore to the banks ...More info on site

Brewery news The Philippines: San Miguel Corp. applies to launch second tranche of P20 bln preferred shares offering
San Miguel Corp. has applied to launch the second tranche of its preferred shares offering, which will generate funds to support its repayment of loans and additional investments in its P734-billion Bulacan airport project, the BusinessWorld Online reported on October 28.

In a disclosure to the exchange on October 27, the company said it has filed an updated registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission to issue up to P20-billion preferred shares.

The proposed offering is composed of up to 266,666,667 Series 2 preferred shares priced at P75 each, which will come from San Miguel’s shelf registration of 533,333,334 preferred shares.

It likewise applied with the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) to lift the trading suspension for the second tranche of its shelf-registered preferred shares.

To recall, San Miguel’s board of directors had approved in August the shelf registration of 533,333,334 preferred shares, which may be issued in tranches over a three-year period.

San Miguel offered the first tranche earlier this month, consisting of 266,666,667 preferred shares at P75 each. They are tentatively scheduled to list on the PSE on Oct. 29.

Based on its updated prospectus as of Oct. 26, the company looks to offer 133,333,400 preferred shares and allot up to 133,333,267 shares as ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: 2019/20 barley exports decrease to 3 mln tonnes
For 2019-20, Canadian barley exports decreased slightly from 2018-19 to 3.0 million tonnes. Exports of barley malt fell by 8% to 0.7 mln tonnes while exports of barley grain remained stable at 2.3 mln tonnes. The main destination countries were China, Japan, the US, and Mexico, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in their October report.

Total domestic use increased by 27% from the prior year to 7.3 mln tonnes on a sharp rise in feed use. Carry-out stocks increased by 11% from the historical low level in 2018-19, to about 1.0 mln tonnes, the second lowest level on record.

In the October 6th supply and demand updates, STC raised barley industrial use for 2018-19 to 301 thousand tonnes from 98 thousand. The increased volume was balanced by the deduction in 2018-19 feed use.

For 2019-20, the industrial use was raised to 259 thousand tonnes from 114 thousand, reflecting a drop of 14% from the revised volume for the previous year. The 2019-20 feed use was trimmed down by nearly 200 Kt from the September estimate. The 2019-20 exports were raised marginally. Carry-in stocks remained unchanged.
