Brewery news USA: Constellation Brands’ beer business continues to grow despite market disruptions
Constellation Brands posted on October 1 a 4% decline in net sales for its second quarter ended in August. For its fiscal first half, the company’s sales were down 5% to $4.2 billion; however, operating profit remained positive, rising 8% to $1.4 billion.

Constellation’s beer business has continued to grow despite market disruptions this year, with depletions up 5% for the second quarter, as “strong performance in off-premise channels continues to more than offset the Covid-19 related impact of the nearly 50% reduction in the on-premise channel.” In particular, the Corona family of brands grew by double-digits in the second quarter, boosted by the launch of Corona Hard Seltzer and robust gains for Corona Premier and Corona Extra. Modelo Especial depletions increased 9%.

On the wine and spirits side, net sales fell 9% organically to $625 million in the second quarter, but operating income increased 1% to $162 million. Driving the profit growth were higher-margin premium brands like Kim Crawford, Meiomi, and The Prisoner Brand Family, which rose by double-digits. Constellation says its billion-dollar sale of a host of wine brands to E.&J. Gallo is now expected to close in its fiscal third quarter ending in November.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg reported this morning that ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: AB InBev and Craft Brew Alliance finalize merger
Anheuser-Busch InBev and Portland, Oregon-based Craft Brew Alliance on September 30 announced that AB InBev's buyout of the Portland, Oregon-based craft brewer has been finalized, the St. Louis Business Journal reported.

In November, Anheuser-Busch agreed to acquire the remaining shares in Craft Brew Alliance (CBA) that it didn't already own, which was 31.2% at the time, and agreed to pay $16.50 per share in cash for the remaining shares. Reuters valued the deal at $321 million.

Earlier this month, the companies entered into an agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice they called “an important next step" toward closing their expanded partnership. The deal came after CBA shareholders' February approval of the partnership and CBA and AB InBev’s decision to sell CBA’s Kona Brewing operations in Hawaii to PV Brewing Partners, which counts as an investor Dave Peacock, former AB InBev president and current Schnuck Markets president and COO.

Effective September 30, CBA's portfolio of brands and breweries will join Anheuser-Busch's Brewers Collective group of craft brewing partners, officials said. "Kona Brewing Co.'s mainland and international operations and regional brands Appalachian Mountain Brewery, Cisco Brewers, Omission Brewing Co., Redhook Brewery, Square Mile Cider Co., Widmer Brothers Brewing, and Wynwood Brewing Co. will further ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Petty Thieves Brewing Co. opens in Charlotte after two-plus years in the making
Petty Thieves Brewing Co. wasn’t going to let a pandemic stand in the way of its debut, WSOC Charlotte reported on October 1.

The North End brewery opened recently at 413 Dalton Ave. after two-plus years in the making.

“We didn’t really have a choice other than to open,” says Ted Rosenau. “You try to plan for everything, but you can’t plan for a pandemic.”

He and Greg Calabria own a majority stake in that brewery; they’ve invested roughly $900,000 to make that venture a reality.

Brewery news Canada, BC: Beer Canada proposing a freeze on tax increases on beer
As British Columbians prepare to head to the polls, Beer Canada is proposing a freeze on tax increases on beer, Castanet.net reported on October 1. Farm groups, bar and restaurant owners, tourism and hospitality associations and brewers started Freeze it for Them to showcase the "seed-to-sip" role that beer plays in the economy.

Roughly 47 per cent of the price of beer in Canada is tax, which is nearly five times higher than the United States.

Freeze it for Them will roll out over the next few weeks by Here for Beer, an online community of 130,000 beer enthusiasts run by Beer Canada.

Interim Beer Canada President Luke Chapman says Canadian consumers, small businesses and the thousands of people working in areas hit hardest by the pandemic – restaurants, hospitality, agriculture, tourism, manufacturing, and transportation – need support.

“Freezing beer tax increases is one small, no-cost decision that federal and provincial governments can make to provide some relief where it’s needed most,” Chapman said.

Barley Council of Canada Chair Zenneth Faye said Canadian brewers provide a reliable high-value market to barley farmers.

“Barley farmers provide brewers with one of the primary ingredients for beer. When beverage alcohol taxes go up every year, that not only makes ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Bricksworth Beer Co. sets an opening date
Bricksworth Beer Co. in Burnsville has set an opening date, kind of, TwinCities.com reported on September 29.

Owner Cooper Johnson (his parents own BlackStack Brewing) said there’s been a delay in getting approval for selling beer (a key person in the city of Burnsville was on a long vacation when they applied), but they’re ready to start offering food.

So, late next week, they’ll roll out a take-out only menu of Detroit-style pizzas, wings and salads. As soon as they can, they’ll sell crowlers of their house-made beer as well.

Chef Angelo Pennacchio, who was the owner of recently closed Bar Luchador in Minneapolis, is heading the kitchen. Pennacchio told us that although he loves tacos, as “an Italian guy from Chicago,” pizza is definitely in his wheelhouse.

Cooper nabbed Steve Snyder, formerly of Fair State, to be the head brewer at Bricksworth. There will be a wide variety of beers, with an emphasis on lagers.

The brewery itself is huge, with a capacity for about 400 during normal times, and because they have high-risk staff members, Johnson said they’re committed to waiting out the pandemic before fully opening.

Barley news UK: Grain harvest completed across most of the UK
Harvest has now reached completion across most of the UK, especially in Central and Southern regions. After a stormy period at the end of August, the weather has been calmer with less rainfall in mid-September allowing some respite for farmers to finish up their harvests and begin early drilling, AHDB reported on October 1.

According to the 5th AHDB harvest report, based on 98% completion, estimated yields for winter wheat are 7.1 -7.3t/ha and winter barley yields are estimated at 6.5 – 6.7 t/ha. These are both back on the five year averages (8.4t/ha and 7.1t/ha). Spring barley yields are predicted around 5.8 – 6.1 t/ha based on 97% completion, largely on par with the five year average.

Barley remains in large supply in the UK, with a considerable exportable surplus despite some of the yield pressures realised in this year’s winter barley crop. With barley operating at export parity, prices are being pressured and the relatively bearish outlook for domestic prices persists.

Brewery news The Philippines: San Miguel Corp. secures regulator approval to issue P20-billion preferred shares
San Miguel Corp. has obtained regulatory approval to issue P20-billion preferred shares under a shelf registration program, BusinessWorld Online reported on October 1.

In a statement on September 30, the Securities and Exchange Commission said it accepted the registration statement of San Miguel to offer up to 533.33 million preferred shares in a three-year period.

San Miguel filed its application for the shelf registration of up to P40-billion preferred shares in August, where P20-billion shares make up the first tranche.

It tapped BDO Capital & Investment Corp., BPI Capital Corp., China Bank Capital Corp., Philippine Commercial Capital Inc., PNB Capital and Investment Corp., RCBC Capital Corp., and SB Capital Investment Corp. as joint issue managers, lead underwriters, and bookrunners for the offering.

In the first semester of 2020, the company booked an ...More info on site
