Barley news Canada: Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre adds two new malting barley varieties to list recommended for 2020
AAC Connect and CDC Bow have made the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre’s short list of recommended varieties for the coming year, AlbertaFarmer Express reported on January 7.

The duo joins longtime favourites CDC Copeland, AAC Synergy, and AC Metcalfe on the short list. Those three accounted for 88 per cent of insured Alberta barley acres in 2019 — Copeland was sown to 522,000 acres, Synergy to 261,000 and Metcalfe to 175,000 with Bow a distant fourth at just over 33,000 acres and Connect (19,000 acres) in fifth.

The centre also has four names on its list of “promising new varieties” that are undergoing seed propagation: CDC Fraser, Lowe, CDC Churchill (all distributed by SeCan) and CDC Copper (distributed by FP Genetics).

Brewery news USA, CA: Second Phase Brewing set to open in downtown Bakersfield this month
A new brewery is set to open in downtown Bakersfield later this month, KGET 17 reported on January 7.

It’s said to be the first brewery in decades for the downtown area.

In a Facebook post, Second Phase Brewing says its opening on Jan. 25.

Second Phase is different than other breweries since it does not have to serve food, thanks to a change in the city’s code last year.

The brewery moved in to the complex on 19th and O streets where it joins Killer Poke and the upcoming Bottle Shock wine bar.

Brewery news USA, OH: Basil’s on Market planning craft brewery in Mason
Basil’s on Market, which already operates three restaurants in the region, plans to launch a craft brewery in Mason to produce beer for its restaurants and for distribution in southwest Ohio, the Hamilton Journal News reported on January 6.

Basil’s on Market operates restaurants in Troy, downtown Dayton and Mason, all of which will remain open, said Jeffrey Finkelstein, co-founder of Basil’s on Market. It plans to soon open a new location in Beavercreek in suburban Dayton.

Finkelstein and Basil’s on Market co-founder Todd Uhlir also own Locktenders, a separate restaurant concept which opened four months ago in downtown Piqua.

If all goes well, the new Basil’s on Market will open this spring, Finkelstein said.

Opening the Beavercreek restaurant will give Basil’s on Market’s owners the opportunity to re-tool its Mason location to include a craft brewery to be called “Off the Rails Brewery,” which will brew beer for all Basil’s locations, Finkelstein said. Long-term plans call for distributing Off the Rails beers throughout the Dayton and Cincinnati areas, the Basil’s co-founder said.

The first Basil’s on Market bistro-style restaurant opened in 2014 in downtown Troy. The downtown Dayton restaurant, which overlooks the Great Miami River, welcomed its first customers in 2016, and the Mason ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Concentric Brewing could soon be brewing in Portland
Something’s brewing in Portland - or it soon could be, the Middletown Press reported on January 5.

Three local men hope to open the town’s first brewery later this year in a rented warehouse space in the town’s industrial park.

More than just a brewery, the three principles behind Concentric Brewing also hope to include a brewpub and seasonal beer garden in space on the Promold Plastics campus at 91 Main St.

The idea of bringing a brewery to Portland caused the Planning and Zoning Commission to re-examine its regulations and then change them to permit a brewery and allow food trucks to operate in town.

Town officials welcomed the idea of a brewery opening in town.

“We’re very excited” about the news, said Mary D. Dickerson, the town’s economic development coordinator.

She has worked with Concentrics’s principles since late September to make sure they can find a home in Portland.

The new 5,000-square-foot site is especially well located, she suggested.

“It’s a walkable distance from Brainerd Place,” the mixed-use development beginning construction on the old Elmcrest Hospital property, Dickerson said.

David Peichert, one of the principles of Concentric, said he and his partners “are shooting for 2020 opening.”

“It’s a very aggressive goal,” Peichert acknowledged. “But we’re committed to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Sunstead Brewing to open its doors next week in Charlotte
A new brewery called Sunstead is opening next weekend in a mid-century modern building in the Gold District near Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, the Charlotte Agenda reported on January 7.

Sunstead, old English for “solstice,” specializes in creative craft brews curated by head brewer Tim O’Neill. He’s a former investment analyst from Portland who, sick of the rain and the cost of living there, moved to Charlotte a few years ago to start a consulting firm that helps breweries with opening logistics. He’s been working on Sunstead along with partners James Owen and Ken McGrath for about two years now.

O’Neill and his partners had previously called Sunstead “Southern Solstice Brewing” — but that was before a number of different breweries with names including “southern” popped up around town. Southern Tier in Lower South End, is one, as is Southern Strain Brewing in Concord.

Sunstead has held a soft opening with family and friends and plans to open to the general public on Saturday, January 18.

Sunstead is in a Brady Bunch-looking brick building at 1200 South Graham, around the corner from Palmer Street Arcade Bar. The whole space is about 6,500 square feet — half of that is the taproom, and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AL: Braided River Brewing announces February 1 opening date
Mobile will have another brewery in service by the time the city’s Mardi Gras parade season gets under way: Braided River Brewing has announced a Feb. 1 opening date, al.com reported on January 8.

The brewery is located at 420 St. Louis St., a few blocks east of Old Majestic Brewing, which opened in mid-December. Its founder is David Nelson who previously worked at Lonerider Brewing in Raleigh, N.C., and moved to Mobile when his wife took a job at the University of South Alabama.

Nelson said the opening would be a “block party style event” with live music starting at 2 p.m. on Feb. 1, a Saturday. Those who just can’t wait can get a preview at a planned soft opening stretch, Thursday-Saturday, Jan. 23-25.

On its Facebook page the brewery recently touted its first brew day, for a batch of brown ale. Nelson said he plans to launch with six beers on tap: Hoppy By Nature IPA, Beer Here Now Kolsch, a Brown Ale, a hoppy Red Ale, a Norwegian Farmhouse Session IPA, and a Coffee Stout brewed in collaboration with Mobile coffeehouse Carpe Diem.

Brewery news USA, CA: The Good Wolf Brewing Company already open in Truckee
The first beers flowed from the taps at The Good Wolf Brewing Company last year, but owners Matt and Heidi Petyo had already long since found a place in the Truckee community, the Tahoe Daily Tribune reported on January 4.

The husband and wife moved to Truckee in April with plans of opening a brewery in the area, and since settling in, they say they’ve been embraced by the town.

“We were amazed at how quickly we were able to find a community,” said Heidi, who works as an archaeologist in the area, while also pursuing a Ph.D. from the United Kingdom’s Durham University. “Everyone seems really good at networking you in. There were people that knew our names before we’d ever even met them. It was a nice change.”

The two grew up in California, and met just as Matt was transitioning from a career in animation to brewing. At the time they were living in the Bay Area.

“I decided I hated making money,” Matt joked. “So I got back into brewing.”

Matt had worked in his early 20s at Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., and longed for a change after working several years at animation companies in the Bay Area.

“With brewing it’s a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Barrage Brewing Company to pour its last beers on January 11
Barrage Brewing Company will soon be pouring its last beers. The microbrewery, based at 32 Allen Boulevard, Farmingdale announced on Instagram it will close its doors this Saturday, January 11, Patch.com reported.

The company didn't give a reason — "don't ask us why, just come say goodbye" — for its closure, but it will maintain its regular hours until it closes. That means beer enthusiasts will have just Thursday, Friday and Saturday to either try Barrage for the first and/or last time.

"Come help us finish off all this great beer, everything must go," Barrage wrote in its post. "And, hey, you've been great! See you in the cafeteria. Thank you all for your support. [Love] The Barrage crew."

Barrage Brewing opened in East Farmingdale in 2014 and has since become a staple of the Long Island craft beer community.

Some of its more popular beers include Yada Yada Yada, a chocolate caramel peanut brown ale likened to drinking a Snickers bar, Assault n' Fudgery, a salted caramel fudge porter, Fluxinator, a coffee stout with maple syrup, Dirty Little S'more, a s'mores-inspired stout, and Touch Me In The Morning, a German kolsch.

Barrage did not respond for comment.

Brewery news South Korea: Korean brewers compete for more market share in absence of Japanese beer
South Korean beer producers are scrambling to fill the vacuum created in the local beer market after Japanese beer suffered a massive loss in market share due to a recent boycott movement against all things Japanese, The Korea Bizwire reported on January 9.

CU, a major South Korean convenience store chain, announced on January 8 that sales of Japanese beers dropped by more than 90 percent since July of last year due to faltering Korea-Japan relations.

In response, South Korean beer producers began to expand their share of the market, going from 1 to 5 percent growth early last year to more than 30 percent by the year’s end.

Microbreweries, in particular, achieved exponential growth based on differentiated brand strategy, growing by 159.6 percent in July, and 306.8 percent last December.

Microbrewery sales, in turn, expanded to comprise 5.6 percent of all South Korean beer sales in 2019, up from 1.9 percent in the previous year.

CU speculates that microbrewery products, which have been suffering from high production costs after the introduction of new legislation on liquor taxation, will now become available at more affordable prices, which will further boost their popularity.

Brewery news Germany: Tap and retail beer prices expected to rise in Germany in 2020
Beer drinkers in Germany can expect higher prices for tap and in some cases retail beer this year, The Local Germany reported on January 9.

In many cases, draught beer is slated to become more expensive for the catering trade – a change expected to trickle down to customers.

The leading German beer producer, the Radeberger Gruppe, is raising the price of draught beer for most of its products at the beginning of March, a spokeswoman for the Radeberger Gruppe told DPA on January 8.

The Group owns more than 40 beer brands in Germany, and is also raising retail prices for a smaller portion of its bottled beers, including Schöfferhofer Weizen, Berliner Pilsner and Ur-Krostitzer.

The private brewery Krombacher is also raising its draught beer prices in the new year, according to a company spokesperson. Krombacher is the beer brand that's most consumed in Germany, according to a ranking by the industry magazine "Inside".

Initially, the increases are only higher sales prices of the breweries to beverage wholesalers, gastronomy or retail.

But "Inside" publisher Niklas Other expects higher prices for beer drinkers in pubs and restaurants.

"But the beer price in Germany is very low by international standards," he explained. Despite declining sales, beer remains ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Carlsberg 0.0 brand gives way to Carlsberg Nordic
Danish brewer Carlsberg has once again swapped out a member of its beer portfolio for a Pilsner, this time without the alcohol, The Drinks Business reported on January 10.

Liam Newton, VP Marketing at Carlsberg UK, said the AF category “has seen huge growth in the last few years as consumers seek to moderate their consumption without comprising on the taste of their beer.

As a result, more people are opting for alcohol-free drinks, but they don’t want their choices to be limited. That’s why we are delighted to bring them a new choice for 2020 that is uncompromising on taste, quality and enjoyment.”

Newton added the alcohol-free beer has already had a successful launch in Denmark, “so we are confident it will be equally successful in the UK.”

Replacing the existing Carlsberg 0.0 brand, Carlsberg Nordic will be listed in over 170 Tesco stores across the UK starting this week, with wider roll out planned later in the year. The launch will coincide with a social and digital campaign running across Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

The beer swap echoes a £20 million marketing campaign Carlsberg launched last year when the brewer discontinued its flagship lager and replaced it with a “Danish Pilsner”.

The beer giant ...More info on site
