Brewery news USA, MN: Sleepy Eye Brewing Company already open in downtown Sleepy Eye
Some may know the town of Sleepy Eye, Minnesota from the tales of Laura Ingalls Wilder. Others take the scenic drive through the forest of trees decorated for the holidays every winter. But Sleepy Eye is getting an addition on Main Street—an attraction that will give people another reason to enjoy and visit the quaint town. Within the antique shops and salons on Main Street, the old Pix Theater has been renovated into a coffee shop by day and brewery by night, The Growler reported on December 27.

Sleepy Eye Brewing Company opened its doors on Friday, December 27 at 4pm. The five co-owners have high hopes that their brewery will help bring some action back to downtown Sleepy Eye.

The roots of the brewery go back to Adam Armbruster and Judd Walter’s homebrewing days. They spent time brewing in sheds and garages and golfing with their three buddies, Dan Schmid, Blair Folkens, and Adam Fischer—the five of them now make up the owners of Sleepy Eye Brewing Company. From a doctor to a contractor to a couple of finance gurus, the group felt they had the collective knowledge to start a successful business and bring something unique to the brewery-to-be.

Hops news USA: Surge in craft breweries leads to geographic expansion of hops production
The surge in craft breweries may be fueling an unprecedented geographic expansion of hops production across the US, Futurity: Research News reported on January 2 citing a new study.

The findings suggest that as more craft breweries emerge around the country, so may new opportunities for farmers.

Hops are a key ingredient in beer production, providing aroma and bittering characteristics. Before 2007, hop production in the US was limited to only three Pacific Northwest states—Oregon, Washington, and Idaho—says Claudia Schmidt, assistant professor of agricultural economics in the College of Agricultural Sciences at Penn State.

Now, 29 states are involved with hop production, Schmidt says, citing a report from the Hop Growers of America.

“Our study is the first to systematically show that the number of hop farms in a state is related to the number of craft breweries,” she says. “It suggests that in areas where hop production is possible and not cost-prohibitive, breweries are expanding markets for farmers and providing an opportunity to diversify farm income.”

Data from the US Census of Agriculture and ReferenceUSA shows that from 2007 to 2017, the number of breweries in the US more than quadrupled from 992 to more than 4,000. Further, the number of breweries in a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Green Cheek Beer Company to open second location in Costa Mesa
Green Cheek Beer Company has bought Barley Forge and will open a second location at that spot in Costa Mesa, OCRegister reported on December 31.

Brian Rauso and Evan Price, co-owners of Green Cheek, acquired Barley Forge for $1.05 million and hope to open within a week. “We are going to be ready for opening a week from today,” Price said on Monday, Dec. 30. “We’re waiting to hear from ABC and sometimes they take a little longer than we appreciate. It’s a standard name change on the license and normally wouldn’t take this long but we’re in the middle of the holidays.”

Barley Forge Brewing Co., the first brewery in Costa Mesa, decided not to renew its lease, Mary Ann Frericks, who opened Barley Forge with her husband Greg Nylen, and Kevin Buckley, director of brewing operations, told the Register in October.

Price said Green Cheek now owns the Barley Forge brand but will likely sell it. Green Cheek will keep the restaurant going with much of the same staff and hopes to have 30 taps, including guest taps, in Costa Mesa. The brewery will still continue to operate its location in Orange at 2294 N. Batavia St., No. C.

Brewery news USA, TX: Hopsquad Brewing Co. holds soft opening in North Austin
North Austin brewery Hopsquad Brewing Co., located at 2307 Kramer Lane, Austin, held its soft opening Dec. 28, the Community Impact Newspaper reported.

The brewery, first announced in March 2018, will open with five core beers—a saison, a pale ale, an IPA, a pilsner and a roggenbier—to serve customers.

Hopsquad, the newest addition to North Austin's established brewery scene, will additionally introduce rotational seasonal beers, such as a Dark Cascadian Ale and Watermelon Mint Summer Ale, founder Alex Limon said. Customers will be able to take beer home through crowler fills at the brewery, Limon said.

Brewery news USA, FL: 3 Car Garage Brewing makes its debut in Bradenton
Specializing in small-batch craft beers, the Bradenton area’s newest brewery, 3 Car Garage Brewing — so-named because the business started out in the owner’s three-car garage — recently made its debut, the Bradenton Herald reported on December 27.

The new brewery, located at 8405 Heritage Green Way, Bradenton, north of State Road 64 (behind a Taco Bell and a Dairy Queen in a retail shopping center) is a long-time dream of two local couples, Stu and Chris Drymon and Darrell and Susie Jackson.

“We wanted outdoor space and plenty of parking and this fit the bill,” said Stu Drymon, who also serves as brewmaster. This week, guests could be seen at the 35-foot long bar inside the brewery and at a picnic table on a patio outside.

“Our goal is to make beer for everyone, with lagers and Pilsners on tap,” he said. “Everything on the tap wall is what I want to drink. We will do some experimental brews, but we’re not going to go too much on the crazy side.”

Among the intriguing and colorful selections — from a list of more than 15 — this week:

▪ Identity Crisis - IPA, West Coast hoppy and East Coast sloppy. Citrus notes and haze ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Dos Sirenos Brewing joins San Antonio’s craft beer scene
San Antonio craft beer fans got an extra holiday gift this season. Anticipated neighborhood taproom Dos Sirenos Brewing opened to the public Friday, December 27, at 4 pm, culturemap.com reported, citing co-owner Mike Sireno.

The Southtown brewpub has been on the local radar since fall 2018 when the owners took over the long-shuttered former home of Beach Bar at 231 E. Cevallos St. Named for Mike and his son Jacob Sireno, who split brewing duties, Dos Sirenos' logo — featuring twin mermen — is a nod to the translation of their surname. Mike’s wife, Kari, is also on board to help run the business.

Dos Sirenos will launch with five core beers: Weiss Guys, a hefeweizen; Athena, a Belgian wit; Morpheus, a Russian imperial stout; Atlas Strong Ale, a winter ale; and Trident Tripel Ale, a Belgian tripel. There will also be other German styles, like a pilsner and dunkelweizen, and an American IPA for hop heads. The 20-tap system can accommodate more future experimentation.

An approachable menu of food, made in-house, will help sop up all that beer. The regular offerings include burgers with Akaushi beef; wings; chicken and Italian sandwiches; and various appetizers and desserts, such as ice cream floats.

Brewery news USA, WI: Steeltank Brewing Co. to open to public on January 18
Steeltank Brewing Co., 1225 Robruck Drive in Oconomowoc, will open to the public Jan. 18, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on December 31.

The taproom is one more step in creating a full-fledged brewery, something that Dave Baron and Jason Radosevich have been working on for more than three years.

Steeltank plans to open with 12 or 13 beers on beers on tap. The inventory eventually will include IPAs, Amber, Oktoberfest, Pale Ale, Kolsch, Pilsner, Hefeweizen, Brown Ale, Porter, Vienna Lager, Scotch Ale and an Oatmeal Coffee Stout.

The taproom will be open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday; 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. (maybe midnight) on Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday, Baron said.

Food truck Just Smokin' Barbecue, owned by Justin Kahle, teamed up with Steeltank and will provide food for the taproom starting on opening night. The 4,500-square-foot taproom, formerly Hops & Leisure, already has a turnkey kitchen.

Baron and Radosevich started as home brewers, but more recently have been contract brewing at Brewfinity, an Oconomowoc neighbor. The pair plan to continue making beer there until they can get their own equipment in place.

Brewery news USA, AL: Construction of Southern Brewers Cooperative Brewpup to set to begin in January
They’re billing it as “four great Alabama breweries under one roof”, al.com reported on December 31.

Construction is set to begin on that project, Southern Brewers Cooperative Brewpup, in January at Stovehouse, the popular Huntsville food/entertainment complex that opened in 2019 at 3414 Governors Drive S.W.

Birmingham’s Good People Brewing and Avondale Brewing, Huntsville’s Straight to Ale, and Tuscaloosa’s Druid City Brewing are collaborating on the brewpub.

Recently, Straight to Ale and Druid City announced the former had acquired the latter.

Good People acquired Avondale in 2017.

The Co-Op Brewpub is planned to open summer 2020.

The 10,000-square-foot facility will make beer, spirits, and wine for onsite consumption.

In addition to brewpub fashioned suds, the location will offer its four collaborators' beers.

There will also be a kitchen onsite preparing made-from-scratch "American comfort food."

In a press release, Straight to Ale owner Dan Perry says, “The creativity coming from this group of brewers (and distillers) is going to result in some amazing new brews along with a new type of taproom experience.”

Good People/Avondale co-owner Michael Sellers adds he's looking forward to "what this collaboration can mean for our industry and communities."

The four brewpub collaborators will still operate at their individual, base locations too.

Brewery news USA, VT: Weird Window Brewing on track for mid-March opening
A new brewery and tap room — Weird Window Brewing — is on track to open in mid-March in South Burlington, its owner said on December 30.

Jack Droppa, a veteran of Otter Creek Brewing in Middlebury and Frost Beer Works in Hinesburg, confirmed his plans over the phone and over the whine and roar of heavy machinery at 82 Ethan Allen Drive.

The new brewery and tap room will occupy space vacated in June by Quebec-based Farnham Ale & Lager after a four year run at that location.

What fuels the Weird Window team, Droppa said, is "approachable and diverse beers; beers that we enjoy drinking and want to share with other people. We hope to have a beer for everyone who visits our tap room."

Early batches will include a New England IPA, a brown ale and a jalapeno cream ale (as a "spicy refreshment"), Droppa added.

He expects to brew up to 800 barrels this year, though there's a capacity for more.

"With all the great beer in Vermont, we thought it made sense to start small," Droppa said.

The brewery's logo offers a broad clue. A stylized roof-line in the foreground features a window angled at 45 degrees — an architectural feature common ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: The Good Wolf Brewing Company open in Truckee since November
The first beers flowed from the taps at The Good Wolf Brewing Company in November, but owners Matt and Heidi Petyo had already long since found a place in the Truckee community, the Sierra Sun reported on December 27.

The husband and wife moved to Truckee in April with plans of opening a brewery in the area, and since settling in, they say they’ve been embraced by the town.

“We were amazed at how quickly we were able to find a community,” said Heidi, who works as an archaeologist in the area, while also pursuing a Ph.D. from the United Kingdom’s Durham University. “Everyone seems really good at networking you in. There were people that knew our names before we’d ever even met them. It was a nice change.”

The two grew up in California, and met just as Matt was transitioning from a career in animation to brewing. At the time they were living in the Bay Area.

“I decided I hated making money,” Matt joked. “So I got back into brewing.”

Matt had worked in his early 20s at Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., and longed for a change after working several years at animation companies in the Bay Area.

“With brewing it’s a physical ...More info on site

The owner of the Phoenix Emporium bar and restaurant in Ellicott City recently announced on Facebook that he would be selling his leasehold interest in the Phoenix effective April 1 and March 31 will be the restaurant's last day of operation, Patch.com reported on December 31.

While patrons at first were incredibly upset, they were thrilled when they learned that Mark Hemmis would be purchasing Ellicott Mills Brewing Company when current longtime chef and owner Richard Winter retires. Hemmis shared that co-owner Timothy Kendzierski and the management team of Dwayne Bouvere, Carrie Foley and Jamie Voss would stay on staff as the two iconic Ellicott City businesses merge in some manner.

"Effective Jan. 1, the Phoenix will be operating both locations. The Phoenix will operate as normal through March 31. We are eternally grateful for the support of our community and are overjoyed with the opportunity to remain a part of Ellicott City's resurgence," Hemmis wrote on Facebook.

Brewery news India: Court gives green light to sale of Vijay Mallya’s economic assets, including United Breweries shares
Exactly a year after he was declared India's first fugitive economic offender, a Special Court in India has given the green signal to banks to dispose of the economic assets of absconding liquor baron Vijay Mallya to recover their dues, the Business Insider India reported on January 2 citing official sources.

The directions to the consortium of 15 banks led by the State Bank of India (SBI) to dispose of Mallya's economic assets like financial securities and shares in his companies, which have been under attachment since 2016, came on Tuesday, December 31.

The lenders' consortium has to recover over Rs 6,000 crore plus interest from Mallya, currently in the United Kingdom, after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) informed the Special Court last year that it had no objections to the same.

The Special Court has, however, stayed its order till January 18 to enable all the parties concerned to file their appeals before the Bombay High Court, the sources said.

Among the assets are Mallya's shares in the United Breweries Holdings Ltd, the value of which is not clear, but which were attached after he was declared a proclaimed offender.

Later in January 2019, Mallya earned the dubious distinction of being declared the country's first ...More info on site

Brewery news Spain: Low and zero-alcohol beer accounts for 13% of total beer sales in Spain
While American publications herald the arrival of “the New Sobriety” on the backs of part-time teetotalers and alcohol-free bars, Spaniards have been drinking low and zero-alcohol beer since the 1970s, vinepair.com reported.

According to the Asociación de Cerveceros de España, the country’s brewers association, these beers account for 13 percent of total beer sales. Today, Spaniards are the world’s largest consumers of alcohol-free and low-alcohol beer.

“In our country, beer is consumed cold with friends and family, in hospitality, during the whole week and almost always with something to eat,” Cristina de Aguirre, director of public affairs at the brewers association, says. “These moderate consumption patterns explain that non-alcoholic beer, while maintaining the flavor of the traditional variety, is considered by Spanish consumers as an excellent alternative when, due to different circumstances, they cannot, should not, or do not want to consume beverages with alcohol content.”

And there are plenty of places to do just that. Spain has the highest concentration of bars in the E.U., according to a study done by La Caixa Economic Yearbook. With over 280,000 bars, it shakes out to one bar for every 165 people. Bar culture in Spain differs significantly from the U.S., though. Bars are popular ...More info on site

Barley news UK: Spring barley variety Diabolo tipped for success in 2020
A dual-purpose spring barley variety with very high yields is tipped for success in 2020 in the UK, having almost completed its probation period with end users, FarmersWeekly reported on January 1.

LG Diablo, which was first recommended in 2018, achieved full approval for distilling in 2019 and is on course to get its brewing stripes later this year.

As with all new spring barleys destined for malting, Diablo came in under the radar, says Clare Leaman, cereals specialist with Niab Tag. She points out that there is always a time lag between recommendation and market uptake with these types.

“Diablo got its full approval for distilling in June 2019 and moved to its second year of provisional approval for brewing in the MBC system at the same time,” she says.

“So it is progressing through the testing regime as expected, with just a bit of additional data required for it to clear the final hurdle.”

Brewing approval is always based on the quantity of results from malting tests, so firm final decisions aren’t made by the industry until there is enough data to consider, she says.

“That leaves newly recommended varieties in limbo for a ...More info on site

Brewery news Venezuela: Economic crisis making consumers switch from beer to cheaper traditional liquor
Venezuela's traditional cocuy liquor is making a comeback due to the country's punishing economic crisis, which has put rum, whiskey and even beer financially out of reach for many, FRANCE 24 reported on December 28.

Agave - which grows in the semi-arid mountains of Bobare and is the main ingredient in cocuy - has been used in Venezuela since before the Spanish conquest, and it is being kept alive by liquor artisans such as 84-year-old Dolores Gimenez.

He began producing cocuy at the age of seven in the eastern state of Lara, but just a few "small jars that were well hidden."

"If the police found you with cocuy, they put you in jail and smashed your distillation cylinders," he said at his still.

Since those days, Gimenez - who has 25 children and 103 grandchildren - has refined the process and now provides joy to those who have seen their favorite alcoholic beverages disappear out of reach thanks to inflation that the International Monetary Fund predicts will hit 200,000 percent in 2019.

"It's three years since I touched a beer," Nelson Vargas, 66, said bitterly.

His pension is barely worth the equivalent of $3 a month - the price of just two beers.

"Few people drink ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Heineken, Brewdog hoping to turn Dry January into sales opportunity
Brewers Heineken and Brewdog are hoping to turn Dry January into a sales opportunity with a string of deals and promotions on their low ABV and alcohol-free beers, The Drinks Business reported on January 2.

Traditionally, ‘Dry January’ is considered a quieter month for the UK on-trade, with consumers abstaining from alcohol and avoiding the pub altogether.

However, sales of beers with an ABV of 1.2% or lower have soared over the past two years. According to market analyst Mintel, 28% of beer drinkers are now starting to cut back on consumption due to health concerns. Meanwhile, analysis by EeBria Trade shows that sales of low and no-alcohol beers have risen 381% since 2017.

Sales of no and low alcohol drinks in the UK on-trade rose by 48% to around £60 million last year, according to CGA’s latest report.

Now, brewers with the capacity and resources to produce non-alcoholic beers on a grand scale are hoping to turn the start of the year into a more lucrative period for the industry.

Dutch brewer Heineken has rolled out what it calls ‘January Dry Packs’. Similar to an advent calendar, that feature 31 cans of its non-alcoholic Heineken 0.0. The beer picked up a Gold medal in ...More info on site

Brewery news India: More microbreweries starting to arrive in India
Before enjoying a beer in India, savvy drinkers will follow a simple process. This is needed to remove the glycerin that saturates most beers and is used as a preservative in a country with a rudimentary approach to storage, BeverageDaily.com reported on January 3.

First, open a bottle of cold beer and upturn it into a glass half-filled with water. Leave it there for a few minutes as you watch a slick of clear oil fall out of the bottle into the water.

When the surge turns into a trickle, and the bottle appears about a quarter emptier, now is the time to drink it—the beer, not the slick. But even after taking this approach, most seasoned drinkers won’t feel very satisfied. Indian beer is hardly made for the enthusiast.

Indian beers tend to fall into two categories: glycerine-laden mass-produced lagers and local heavy hitters—literally—like the 7% Haywards 5000 or the even stronger Knock out. Locals will tell you these are especially popular among depressed men and long-distance lorry drivers.

Arundeep Singla is on a mission to change this reality. The founder and managing director of The Brew Estate is an entrepreneur from Punjab who is obsessed with BrewDog, the Scottish craft brewer, and ...More info on site
