Brewery news USA: View on more beer consumption cautious as drinkers turn to spirits and seltzer investment banker Cowen
Investment banker Cowen is keeping a cautious view on the prospects for more US beer consumption, particularly domestic beer, as drinkers turn to spirits and seltzer and as a new study indicates teenagers are rejecting alcohol and cigarettes, The Detroit News reported.

Data show that schoolchildren in eighth, tenth and twelfth grades are continuing to make trade-offs between vaping and cigarettes and between cannabis and alcohol, with teens increasingly shifting away from legacy consumption offerings, analysts led by Vivien Azer wrote in a note. Signals are mixed for companies, with Constellation Brands Inc. and Brown-Forman Corp. potentially gaining and Altria Group Inc. missing out.

Given the declines in youth incidence of alcohol, the shifts in underlying sub-category trends will ultimately be increasingly important, Azer said, noting that pockets of beer, including imports, continue to expand at healthy rates. Meanwhile, alcohol and cannabis use is converging, as are perceived risks and disapproval, she said. There are also declines in lifetime alcohol use, perhaps linked with an increasingly health conscious consumer, she said.

Here are some of the implications for stocks, according to Cowen:

Constellation Brands: Has gained share as it leads in imported beer in the U.S., with Modelo Especial and its Corona Family delivering ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Two Rivers Beer Company acquires majority ownership in Bare Arms Brewing
Two Rivers Beer Company announced on December 23 they have acquired majority ownership in Bare Arms Brewing, the Cision reported.

Two Rivers Beer Company (Two Rivers) is owned by Kevin Yackley, a 35-year craft brewer who moved to Waco, Texas, to bring his love of craft beer to the growing craft scene in Waco and deliver new choices to craft beer drinkers in Texas. The merger between Bare Arms Brewing (Bare Arms), Waco's oldest craft brewery and Two Rivers, who brings significant new resources, including brewing expertise, new capital, and marketing capabilities, will propel Bare Arms into its next growth phase.

"My family and I moved to Waco just over two years ago to enhance the craft beer scene. We chose Waco for its beauty, global notoriety, growing population and its fledgling craft beer scene," says Kevin Yackley, CEO of Two Rivers. Yackley continues, "Bare Arms was the first brewery I visited and knew instantly that I wanted to be a part of the craft growth in Waco. I am proud to call Waco home and very excited to roll up my sleeves, bare my arms and work hard side by side with the Bare Arms ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Soul Fire Brewing Company already open in Roanoke
Over the last few years, Roanoke has seen a boom in growth as its list of residents expands and more business pops up, adding a variety of restaurants, small pubs and stores to capture the attention of locals and visitors, the Dallas Observer reported on December 23.

Although there has been plenty of growth and new buildings occupying the streets, there was still one thing that was missing: a brewery. But with only a couple of months of operation underway, Soul Fire Brewing Company has given the residents of Roanoke what they wanted.

A humble beginning was the direction co-founder and head brewer Aaron Bennett and his partner James Brown went. Example: The day they got their certificate of occupancy, they opened their doors without any event planned.

That day we opened up our doors with no real social media push or advertisement, pretty much just word of mouth and still had a good turnout with more people showing up each night, Bennett says.

Soul Fire Brewing is situated in a setting unlike many breweries that have ample space to utilize and most times are in a building by themselves. Soul Fire's operation is set up within a small food court alongside several restaurants, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AZ: Pedal Haus opening new brewery in downtown Chandler
Award-winning Tempe brewery Pedal Haus is opening a new location in downtown Chandler in 2020, AZCentral.com reported on December 20.

The space currently houses Las Palmas Cantina, a Mexican-style restaurant and bar set to close at the end of the year. The location was previously slated to be transformed into a new concept called Chandler Yacht Club but that project was canceled before it had a chance to open.

While the liquor license for the space is still under the Yacht Club name, owner Julian Wright told The Arizona Republic the location will soon reopen as the first outpost of the Tempe brewery and pub, serving a similar food menu and all of Pedal Haus' beers.

The new Pedal Haus location is scheduled to open in on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, 2020. A grand opening celebration is set for March 6-8.

Pedal Haus is the only brewery on Mill Avenue and it's hard to miss. If the large brew tanks don't intrigue passers-by, then the enormous front patio complete with games, misters and bicycle-themed decor certainly might.

Since opening four years ago, Pedal Haus has established itself as a brewing powerhouse winning multiple international awards for its beer including a gold medal at ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TN: Little Animals Brewery getting ready to open in Johnson City
In 2014, Chris Cates was an avid home brewer enchanted by saison beers, the Johnson City Press reported on December 21.

Saisons are really cool and versatile, and I just fell in love with that style of brewing and the history behind it, Cates said. And like anyone who starts home brewing, to my wife I said, Oh, we should open a brewery, and she was like, Pump the brakes.

Now, after spending several years acclimating to the industry, Cates and his business partner are getting ready to open Little Animals Brewery at 324 E. Main St. in downtown Johnson City.

The business received its beer permit from the city on Thursday, and Cates expects to begin brewing by mid-to-late January. He anticipates the business will open its doors in either February or early March at the latest.

The brewerys name is a reference to its stock of beers.

A lot of people assume it has something to do with the animal shelter or something like that, Cates said, but the name Little Animals is a nod to the fact that we brew beer that feature little animals the microbes that drive flavors in beer and differentiate one beer from another.

The brewerys primary focus ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ME: Trinken Brewing Co. to launch in West Bath sometime next year
When Trinken Brewing Co. opens its doors in West Bath sometime next year, it will mark the 155th brewery in Maine, and 24th in the Midcoast, according to the head of the Maine Brewers Guild, the Press Herald reported.

The number of small breweries in the area, however, doesnt dissuade Trinken founders Tyler Inman and Ryan Bisson.

People are excited here because its a place theyre going to call their own, Bisson said. They dont have to go to Brunswick, they dont have to go to Portland, they dont have to go to Boothbay; theyve got a place here.

Sean Sullivan, executive director of the Maine Brewers Guild, agreed with that sentiment Monday.

People are craving that face-to-face time with their neighbors and fellow community members, he said. It goes beyond just the beer; its creating communal spaces where people can get to know one another. There are few places left where you can feel comfortable striking up a conversation with a complete stranger, but breweries are one of those places.

Theres still room for more, he said. Any community of a reasonable size, and some even below that, have a little brewery.

Each one provides a new taste of Maine, from the locals gathering at ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AZ: Barrio Brewing Company to transfer entire business ownership to its employees in January
Tucson craft brewery Barrio Brewing Company announced that it will transfer the entirety of the business ownership to its employees through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) in January 2020, the Tucson Foodie reported on December 20.

While companies such as Modern Times Beer and New Belgium Brewing Company, have implemented ESOP models, Barrio Brewing will be the first in the US to give 100 percent of its ownership to employees once the ESOP is effective.

Barrio Brewing started as, and will continue to be, a family affair as our employees are family and have put their hearts and souls into making Barrio what it is today, said Dennis Arnold, Barrios soon-to-be brewmaster emeritus. Nearly 30 years after our humble beginnings, the decision on our exit strategy was easy for both of us, either sell the business or simply give the business to those whove made it what it is, our employees, leaving them with their destinies in their own hands.

Dennis and Tauna Arnold founded Gentle Bens Brewing Company in 1991. In 2006, expansion moved the brewerys production facilities and restaurant to a 22,000-square-foot building now known as Barrio Brewing Company.

Jaime Dickman, an industry veteran with 18 years of experience, was hired ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Hardywood Pilot Brewery and Taproom holds farewell party
A Charlottesville brewery closed its doors on December 22, but it went out with a bang. The Hardywood Pilot Brewery and Taproom hosted a farewell party, WVIR reported.

The party lasted for nine hours. There was a live band and drink specials.

One of the brewerys loyal customers, Lauren Hall, came to see them off.

Were kind of bummed to see it leave but just wanted it give it one last good hurrah, she stated.

The bar also raffled off several items during the event.

Brewery news Belgium: AB InBev, Alken-Maes to increase beer prices from January 1
Beers brewed by AB InBev and Alken-Maes will be more expensive from January 1 in bars, restaurants and supermarkets, The Brussels Times reported on December 27.

The price of a barrel (50 litres) of Stella will increase by 6 euro and a barrel of Jupiler will go up by 2.70 euro.

Alken-Maes will also be increasing the price of its products from 1 January in shops, whereas the Horeca sector will not be concerned until February 1.

The brewer does not however provide any details concerning the amount of the increase.

Alcohol-free beers will be unaffected by the increase.

Brewery news Japan & South Korea: Japans beer exports to South Korea drop 99.1% in November
Beer exports by Japan to South Korea in November stood at 6.96 million, down 99.1 percent from a year earlier, the Finance Ministry said on December 26.

The November exports remained very weak due to continued boycotts of Japanese products in South Korea, reflecting the soured bilateral relations.

In October, Japans beer exports to South Korea dropped to zero for the first time in about 20 years.

According to the latest detailed trade data, exports of hydrogen fluoride, one of the semiconductor materials that was subject to tighter export controls introduced by Japan against South Korea in July but eased in December, tumbled 93.5 percent to 46.93 million.

Other Japanese products hit hard by the boycotts include instant ramen noodles, with the value of exports standing at 910,000 for the month, or down 97.9 percent on the year, the ministry said.

Brewery news UK: Pub sector reiterates urges to reduce beer duty
UK pub sector representatives have reiterated urges for the Government to reduce beer duty, The Morning Advertiser reported on December 24.

It comes after the Government outlined it would introduce a cut in business rates ahead of the Queens Speech last week.

While the move was welcomed by many in the sector others believe there also needs to be a lower rate of tax on beer to help struggling pubs.

British Beer & Pub Association chief executive Emma McClarkin welcomed the commitment to change the business rates system but said action on duty was needed.

She said: However, with seven out of 10 drinks sold in a pub being beer, it remains the case that a freeze or cut in beer tax at the next budget is the most direct way of helping pubs stay viable, so we hope that the commitment to a review of alcohol duties encompasses this.

During his election campaign Boris Johnson pledged a new Government led by him would look into alcohol duties.

McClarkin added: It would also show that the Prime Minister is listening to the 230,000 supporters of the Long Live the Local campaign, which calls on the next Government to cut beer tax to support local pubs ...More info on site

Barley news Ethiopia: IFC investing up to 50 million in Habesha Breweries S.C. and local barley sourcing
IFC is investing up to 50 million in Habesha Breweries S.C. to help the company expand operations in Ethiopia and increase local barley sourcing from smallholder farmers, World Grain reported on December 23.

The loan is co-funded by the Dutch development bank (FMO) and Dutch banks Coperatieve Rabobank U.A. (Rabobank) and ING Bank N.V. (ING Bank).

Programs that support local sourcing are critical to linking smallholder farmers to large supply chains, thus creating more economic opportunity and jobs for vital parts of the countrys agriculture sector, said Jumoke Jagun-Dokunmu, IFCs regional director for Eastern Africa.

According to IFC, Ethiopias brewing industry is fast growing and an important contributor to economic growth, but the sector imports as much as 90% of its malt barley needs.

Our partnership with IFC and other lenders is timely and key to growing the malt barley supply chain in Ethiopia, said Zewdu Negate, chief executive officer of Habesha Breweries. We aim to increase smallholder farmers from 1,000 to 14,000 in the next five years and improve household incomes. This investment has a purpose and feels like the right thing. I am extremely proud that we are able to continue to build and grow the brewery in partnership with the barley ...More info on site
