Brewery news USA, VA: Callao Brewing Co. hoping to be up and running by October
“There’s nothing to do in Northumberland County.”

That’s a common refrain in the small Northumberland town of Callao, Virginia, according to James Adams, a Northern Neck native who aims to put the town of 2,400 on the map – or at least on the map of brewery tours, the RichmondBizSense reports.

Adams and business partner Roger Hale are working to open Callao Brewing Co. in a former consignment shop at 129 Northumberland Highway – about 65 miles east of Richmond – with an eye on quenching the thirst of river country vacationers.

“Probably three-quarters of the population down here are vacationers,” Adams said.

The new brewery will join a budding beer scene in that part of the state, with breweries coming to Lancaster and Richmond counties, and three already open on the Northern Neck: Montross Brewery and Colonial Beach Brewing in Westmoreland County and Kilmarnock Brewhaus in Kilmarnock.

“Callao is kind of like in between all those,” Adams said. “It’s the dot that connects the line. The Northern Neck planning commission is hoping we can get a brew trail started now that we have one coming to Warsaw and us in Callao.”

Adams and Hale are distant relatives. Adams said his family’s been on the Northern ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NJ: Four City Brewing Company coming to Orange soon
A prominently located retail space in Orange that has sat empty since the building it occupies was completed several years ago is finally getting built out, the Jersey Digs reported on July 8.

Signage has been installed on the facade of 55 South Essex Avenue across from Orange’s main train station advertising that the Four City Brewing Company is coming soon. Construction is currently wrapping up on the craft brewery, which was founded by Roger Apollon Jr., Jeff Gattens, and Anthony Minervino. It is expected to open its doors later this summer and will be the first brewery in the Essex County city in four decades, according to the Four City website.

The 4,700-square-foot business, named after the four municipalities that make up the Oranges, describes itself as being “dedicated to providing the quality craft beer that discerning beer drinkers have come to expect.”

The developments at 50 and 55 South Essex Avenue were built by L+M Development Partners on properties previously used for industrial purposes. There are currently 72 residential units on the premises.

The news of Four City Brewing Company opening at this L+M development comes as another brewery is in the works for L+M’s Walker House project a few miles to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Pikes Peak Brewing expanding in Downtown Colorado Springs
Pikes Peak Brewing Co., a veteran-owned, independent craft brewery in Monument, Colo., is expanding into the Downtown Colorado Springs community with the establishment of a new Lager House. Embracing its motto of “Life is better when lived together,” Pikes Peak Brewing will anchor a new market concept located in the 500 block of S. Tejon St in the Trolley building, the Craft Brewing Business reported on July 9.

Pikes Peak Brewing Lager House will produce small batch, hand crafted lagers, creating a place where the community can get together over a hand crafted beer. Included in the lager offerings will be custom, oak aged lagers made in horizontal, oak lagering tanks from Foeder Crafters USA. The Lager House will also offer signature beers from the original Monument brewery that was established in 2011.

The market will be a community of independent Colorado businesses collectively offering a place to eat, drink, shop and connect – a new and innovative concept for the growing community of Downtown Colorado Springs - and offer a vibrant live music venue.

The Pikes Peak Brewing Lager House will include a 2,500 sq-ft rooftop patio and unparalleled views into the age old process of creating unique and historical ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ND: Drumconrath Brewing Co. ready to turn up volume in Fargo
Drumconrath Brewing Co. is ready to turn up the volume, INFORUM reported on July 10.

“We’re going to be loud and proud,” owner Sam Corr said Tuesday, July 9.

Drumconrath, which got its start in Mapleton, N.D., now occupies the former Drekker Brewing Co. brewery and taproom space in the Cityscapes Plaza building.

The larger taproom also comes with a larger brewing capacity, moving from a 7-barrel per batch system that could produce up to 1,750 barrels of beer a year, to a 10-barrel system that can roll out 2,500 barrels of beer, “if we can really get that demand going,” Corr said.

The room’s 12 taps are all pouring and the soft opening reception has been “very positive,” he said.

Drumconrath took control of the space May 15.

“It’s certainly an opportunity to grow. The space is a lot bigger. The available walk-in population is so much higher,” Corr said shortly after the handoff. “It just gives us an opportunity” to make more beer and make more experimental beers.

Corr said he didn’t have to do much work to make the former Drekker space his own. A coat of paint and some of his own decor was all that was needed.

“It’s pretty sweet, I think. I ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: White River Brewing Company for sale in Springfield
Springfield’s White River Brewing Company has been a major talking point for the revitalization of historic Commercial Street in north Springfield. Now, following the March 26 death of its 75-year-old founder, John "Buz" Hosfield, it's on the market, the Springfield News-Leader reported on July 10.

The news comes just days after downtown beer bar Patton Alley Pub was put on sale for $150,000.

Hosfield's children, Dave Hosfield and Carol Leandro, are asking $204,000 for the White River business, according to an announcement sent overnight Wednesday by VR Business Sales.

The real estate, recently appraised at $745,000, is also for sale through VR's sister company, Professional Real Estate LLC. Greene County records list the owner of the White River Brewing Company building as 505 WEST C ST LLC.

Hosfield founded the brewery, known for small batches of cult beers like Gravel Bar IPA and Table Rock Red, in 2012. It marked an early point in Springfield's 21st-century craft-brewery boom. Mother's Brewing had just begun the year before, and since then, more breweries have popped up in the downtown, Rountree and Galloway neighborhoods.

"Being able to disclose that this business is for sale is unusual for us," said Bret McGowne with VR Business Sales in an ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Sojourners Brewstillery in the works for Dayton
The Dayton area’s newest craft brewery is in the works in Washington Twp. between Centerville and the Dayton Mall, and this one comes with a twist: it will include a small-batch distillery, too, Dayton.com reported. Sojourners Brewstillery, coming soon to 8150 Washington Village Drive in the Yankee Business Center in Washington Twp., is the brainchild of Jeff Marjamaa, who moved to Sugarcreek Twp. with his family last fall.

Marjamaa has some brewery experience under his belt. He is the co-founder and served as chief financial officer of two other breweries: Aegir Brewing Co. in Elk River, Minnesota, and JAKs Brewing Co. in Falcon, Colorado.

“We want to put down roots here,” he said of the Dayton area.

The 6,000-square-foot space will be split between a tap room and production facilities, and will seat about 100, Marjamaa said. The tap room will have the feel of a public house in England — “a community gathering place where everyone feels welcome, including those who don’t like to drink beer.” The distillery portion of the business will focus on small-batch spirits, and the beers will be “light and clean,” Marjamaa said, ranging from older European styles to West-coast IPAs. A barrel-aging program ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Hopnonymous Brewing prepares to open in San Diego
After a year in the brewing industry—preceded by 16 years in hospitality—Remy Zurita is ready to go full-steam ahead with his passion project, Hopnonymous Brewing. An interest focused on producing private-label beers for restaurants and bars, it will be based in the Kearny Mesa facility at 7705 Convoy Court, San Diego that previously housed now-shuttered Council Brewing, westcoastersd.com reported on July 10.

“I started my career in Paris and arrived in San Diego six years ago. The food-and-beverage business is huge here, constantly booming and evolving,” says Zurita. “San Diegans are fine drinkers, very curious and definitely happy foodies.”

It’s those qualities, he says, that make the county one where his concept can succeed. He knows how popular local beer is here, and with thousands of hospitality venues countywide, feels the sky’s the limit for his venture, which has racked up enough customers in the past year to provide initial proof of concept.

“A bunch of great restaurants and bars throughout San Diego have jumped onboard and their loyal customers are stoked,” he says. “We are excited to expand our brewing capacity through our new brewery and the marketing expertise of our team.”

It all started when Zurita was working for Buona Forchetta in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Livonia city council approves site plan for new brewery
Livonia's newest brewery took a major step toward becoming a reality on July 8, Hometownlife.com reported.

The city council approved the site plan for the brewery pitched for 27719 Seven Mile by owners Andrew Schumacher and Nathan Pastuzyn. Once built, it would join other breweries with operations in Livonia: SuperNatural Brewing and Spirits and the brewing program at Schoolcraft College.

"It's nice to see young people coming in to our community and doing these nice types of businesses," said Council President Laura Toy.

The unnamed brewery, which was first reviewed by the council at a study meeting in June, will move into space formerly occupied by a carpet and flooring business that's been vacant for many years. The brewpub would operate from Thursday to Sunday and offer just beer for sale. Patrons would be allowed to bring in food purchased from other area businesses and eat it inside or in the proposed beer garden.

There is no opening date yet for the brewery, which would be located between Harrison and Inkster.

At least one resident brought up some concern over discussion over bringing food trucks to the space to sell food as well, something that was discussed briefly at the city council's study meeting back ...More info on site

Barley news USA: AMBA updates recommended malting barley varieties list
The American Malting Barley Association (AMBA) Board of Directors has added LCS Violetta to the recommended list of malting barley varieties for 2019, the Craft Brewing Business reported on July 9.

LCS Violetta, a winter two-row malting variety, was developed by Saatzucht Breun in Germany and is marketed in the United States by Limagrain Cereal Seeds. Brewery news USA, MO: William K. Busch Brewing Co. ceases all operations
William K. Busch Brewing Co. on July, 10 announced that it will cease all operations, effective immediately, the St. Louis Business Journal reported.

The brewer said it would be shutting down, dissolving and stopping the brewing of its Kräftig and Kräftig Light beers “due to the market demand.”

“After careful consideration, the William K. Busch Brewing Co. has decided to shut down,” said founder and CEO Billy Busch in a statement. “I want to thank all of our customers, retailers, suppliers and vendors who have supported us over the last eight years. I’ve always been passionate about brewing, because it’s in my blood."

After the announcement, Trish Cheatham, spokeswoman for the brewery, said it remains unclear how many employees will be affected by the closure.

Busch in November was granted approval from the St. Charles County Council for a new 20,000-square-foot brewery located at 4151 Benne Road in Defiance, Missouri, which was set to open in spring 2020.

Cheatham said the founder “may pursue the Defiance opportunity in the future, but nothing is certain and it will depend on numerous factors.” She did not share additional details.

On June 28, the brewing company filed a “Notice of Winding Up” with Missouri Secretary of State ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Mad Fox Brewing Company closing down
As its nine-year anniversary celebration nears, Mad Fox Brewing Company plans to close in Falls Church in less than two weeks, the Tysons Reporter said.

On July 9, the brewpub’s Facebook page had the following message:

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I inform you of the closure of Mad Fox Brewing Company. Our last day of business will be Sunday, July 21st.

The decision to close has been an extremely difficult one to make. We have witnessed restaurant competition in the 2.2 square mile Falls Church City become fierce since our opening in 2010 with multiple businesses opening in the last year alone. As much as we tried to compete, there are an overwhelming number of choices for the local population. Sales have been on a slow decline over the last several years and, unfortunately, staying open is no longer sustainable.

On the brewing side of our business we continue to see more breweries opening in Virginia with two new Taprooms setting up shop within a mile of Mad Fox in the last year. When we opened in 2010, there were 40 breweries in Virginia. Now there are close to 250. The Brewpub business model is a tough one ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: Craft beer sector still finding its way
While the craft brew industry in the United States has been flourishing for decades, in South Africa, the market is still finding its way, The Hawk reported on July 9.

“South Africa is in the wild wild west phase of craft beer, but it is starting to develop a bit of a name, and people are starting to pick up,” said Troye May, who serves on the board of the Craft Beer Association South Africa.

Mitchell’s, a brewery located in Knysna in the Western Cape, was the first independent craft brewery in South Africa, popping up in the mid-1980, May said. In 2007, a few more breweries came on board, and then more after the FIFA World Cup, which was held in South Africa in 2010.

“It just escalated from there,” May said. “The big year in terms of number of breweries opening was in 2016. I think we had a 40% increase of number of breweries opened. It wasn’t as many as 3,000 that America had at this time, but our growth was double that of the States.”

May’s organization now represents over 200 craft brewers in South Africa.

“We represent a whole nation of beers,” May said. “We just don’t represent one ...More info on site

Brewery news Kenya: East African Breweries Limited announces price increases
Beer-lovers will from July 15 be forced to dig deeper into their pockets after East African Breweries Limited (EABL) increased the prices of a range of their alcoholic products, the Nairobi News reported on July 8.

The brewer placed an advertisement on the local dailies announcing the new prices, which on average show an increment of Sh10 for all popular beer brands.

As a result, the recommended retail price of a 500ml bottle of the company’s flagship beer brand Tusker Lager is now Sh160, up from Sh150, while a 500ml bottle of Guinness Stout will retail at Sh180, up from Sh170.

Several brands of spirits have also been affected by the price change. A 250ml bottle of Smirnoff Vodka will now retail at Sh420, up from Sh400, while a 250ml bottle of Gilbey’s Gin will retail at Sh410, up from Sh390.

However, the company announced that three brands of spirits – Chrome, Kenya Cane and Kane Extra – are unaffected by the price change.

The move comes just one month after the National Treasury Cabinet Secretary, Henry Rotich, announced an increase in excise duty on alcohol and cigarettes in his 2019/20 budget.

Mr Rotich explained that the sin tax hike is meant to plug deficits in ...More info on site

Brewery news The Philippines: Craft Beers Association responds to post on ‘unsafe’ brews
A group representing the Philippine craft beer producers has responded to a viral post that is urging the public to “stay away from all local craft beer and spirits”, ABS-CBN News reported on July 9.

The post has been copied and pasted on Facebook by many Filipinos, citing the recent report of methanol poisoning from a local gin called Cosmic Carabao.

“Stay away from ALL local craft beer and spirits. Jess Milner is currently confined in the hospital for having drank #CarabaoGin. She has currently gone blind in her left eye and there are more reported cases of death upon consumption of these products. Locally crafted spirits do not go through any FDA regulations. Pls be aware before ordering cocktails!” the post read, unedited.

In a Facebook advisory on July 9, the Craft Beer Association of the Philippines (CBAP) made it clear that methanol only occurs during the distillation process, which produces spirits.

This, the group stressed, is different from brewing or fermentation, the process involving the production of beer.

“We, the members of the Craft Beers Association of the Philippines (CBAP), would like to clarify this distinction in response to a sweeping post in the social media… without specifying how beer is involved ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Heineken faces potential penalty over pubs code breach
Deputy pubs code adjudicator Fiona Dickie has stated Heineken UK could face a financial penalty of up to 1% of its annual UK turnover if Star Pubs & Bars is found to have breached the pubs code. As reported by The Morning Advertiser, Heineken’s pub arm Star Pubs & Bars will be the subject of the first investigation by the pubs code adjudicator (PCA), which believes the operator of around 2,700 pubs may have breached the pubs code.

“We suspect that [Star Pubs & Bars] has breached the pubs code by offering unreasonable stocking terms to tenants seeking to go free of tie,” Dickie told The Morning Advertiser.

“A stocking requirement is not a tie, it’s a new concept that was created by the pubs code and it does permit a brewing pub owning business to require a tenant going free of tie under MRO (the Market-Rent-Only option) to continue to stock products. But there are limits and the requirements must be reasonable. The tenant must be able to buy products on the open market, to secure the best price and they cannot be prohibited from stocking competitor brands.”
