Canada: Weather mostly dry in Canada’s barley-growing regions
|
The Canadian Prairies remain mostly dry in the barley growing regions. Soil moisture reserves declined sharply in Saskatchewan, while Manitoba and Alberta have better soil moisture supplies at this time, CMBTC said in their latest report in June.
Rain is definitely needed across the Prairies, as heat and dryness impact crops, especially in Saskatchewan. This province has the greatest need for moisture before irreversible damage is done. While some areas of the northwest have rain in the forecast, most of the province has little in the way of precipitation expected in the coming week and as a result can expect to start to see serious crop damage in some areas.
The long-term forecast indicates a reduction in the present dryness with more rain in late June and July, which would be ideal for crop growth, but it will be too late by then if rain does not materialize in very short order.
Alberta
Overall the crops have maintained the status quo, however additional precipitation would go a long way in moving the crop forward.
• Southern region (Strathmore, Lethbridge, Foremost): This region remains the best area to date, as it has received some moisture and this has promoted good crop development.

USA, TX: New law would allow breweries to sell beer to-go
|
Local craft beer is becoming more popular in the Central Texas area, but it's the difference in the type of brewery that prevents customers from being able to take that cold beverage home, KWTX reported on June 8.
A new bill that's made its way to the Governor's desk would change that.
"If someone comes to town drinks our beer and wants to take it home, we can't legally sell them it," says Brotherwell Brewing Owner David Stoneking.
Brotherwell Brewing is licensed as a manufacturing brewery which under current state law doesn't allow beer to be sold to-go.
However Bare Arms Brewing who's celebrating their 4th anniversary is considered a retail brewery.
Under that license they have been allowed to sell beer to-go.
"Our idea of a good time is just making fun beer," says Bare Arms Owner Andy Soukup.
"The growth will come naturally we just want to make beer that’s fun to drink."
Soukup and Stoneking agree that craft beer is on the rise in cities like Waco, and the new bill would be another move towards growth in the brewing industry.
The House Bill 1545 has been sent to the Governor's desk for approval, and if signed would go into place September 1st of this year.

Canada, NB: Beer to be sold in select grocery stores as from October
|
Beer will be sold in 66 grocery stores across New Brunswick starting in October, NB Liquor announced on June 5.
It's part of a new "beverage portfolio," which will also see ready-to-drink products and an updated wine selection available at the same grocery stores that currently sell wine and cider, said spokesperson Mark Barbour.
He expects "mainstream" beer will hit the shelves first, he said, citing Molson, Labatt and Moosehead as examples.
"On a Phase 2 approach, we will work with the local New Brunswick craft industry and bring them into that channel as well," he said.
The beer will be in sold as singles and in small packages only. Larger sizes, such as a 24-pack would be "irresponsible," said Barbour.
Sean Dunbar, owner of Picaroons Brewing Company in Fredericton, said he only learned about the announcement through the media and described it as "good news, bad news."
"Really excited that finally there's a new retail channel open" and one that consumers have been saying for quite some time they want, he said.
"Excessively, extremely disappointed that the beers that people want to drink in that channel aren't allowed to participate."

USA, MN & SD: Lupulin Brewing Co. buying Hydra Beer Co.
|
A Minnesota brewer is buying a Sioux Falls brewery and taproom, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported on June 7.
Lupulin Brewing Co. of Big Lake, Minnesota will acquire Hydra Beer Co. Purchase price was not disclosed. Lupulin recently partnered with Global Distributing to deliver its beer in South Dakota.
The Argus Leader says Chad Petit and Nick Murphy founded the business and opened the taproom in 2015. Lupulin says the purchase of Hydra will augment its distribution deal and deepen the company's roots in Sioux Falls.

USA, PA: Inner Groove Brewing to open its doors in Verona on June 15
|
A new brewhouse in Verona promises to be the place for sounds and suds, TribLIVE reported on June 6.
Inner Groove Brewing along East Railroad Avenue is expected to open at noon on June 15 with eight beers on tap.
It’s located in a former interior design shop near the borough building and owned by couples Kevin and Jen Walzer of Gibsonia and Tim and Kelly Melle of West Deer.
They picked the small town between Oakmont and Penn Hills after an extensive search.
“It was kind of an underserved community as far as brewing,” said Kevin Walzer, a 1990 Fox Chapel graduate. “We feel like we’ve hit a nice spot, just a great community. The people have been fantastic.”
He said parking, walkability and activity at surrounding businesses also set Verona apart from other municipalities.
The “inner groove” on vinyl records is where bands would have hidden tracks and messages.
Music is strong theme throughout the 4,000-square-foot shop, from glued cassette tape centerpieces with electric candles to vinyl records used as coasters.
The business logo looks like a hop spinning on a record with the company name in white boxes with black lettering.

USA, KY: Maysville Brewing Company to hold grand opening on June 14
|
A grand opening ceremony for the Maysville Brewing Company will be held on Friday, June 14, the Ledger Independent reported.
The brewery, owned by Tiffany and Brandon Fields, is located in the Limestone Square building on West Second Street in downtown Maysville.
The couple have worked for several years to make their dream of owning their own brewery.
“My husband has wanted to do this for probably 12 years now,” she said. “It’s been a dream of his for a long time. The timing was never right and location was never right. When William started on this building, I found out about it and told my husband about it. We thought it was perfect for what we wanted to do. This was just the perfect space.”
Brandon Fields said it all started with brewing at home.
“I used to brew at home and people really liked,” he said. “They told me I should sell it. I started with the kits and decided I wanted to make my own recipes. I tried it and they were really good.”

USA, CO: Sparge Brewing becomes Wellington's third brewery
|
Sparge Brewing opened on June 7, becoming Wellington's third brewery, The Coloradoan reported.
Located just off Interstate 25 at 3999 George W. Bush Ave., the brewery specializes in sessionable beers, with low- to moderate-alcohol levels and "easy drinking."
Sparge, named after a rinsing method used in the brewing process, is owned by founder Rich Efird, who developed an interest in craft beer and home brewing more than a decade ago.
Born into a military family in North Carolina, he lived in Germany and traveled the world during his Army career, tasting beers in all the countries in which he was deployed.
Efird retired after 20 years in the Army and eventually settled in Northern Colorado with his family. He began winning accolades in amateur brewer competitions. Efird hired Rick Hatch, a recent graduate of CSU's fermentation science program, as Sparge's head brewer.
The brewery plans to offer 10 beers on tap: a witbier, IPA, stout, porter, saison, cream ale, red, hefeweizen and APA, to start.
In addition, they'll have Turtle Mountain kombucha in bottles and packaged snacks. Spokeswoman Jeanette Daig said Sparge is working on filling its food truck schedule to offer additional food choices.

USA, WA: Husband-and-wife team launches Moonshot Brewing in Kennewick
|
It's been Ryan Wattenbarger and his wife's dream for the past four years. And now, it's finally come true.
The Wattenbarger's say it's more of a passion project, combining two of the things they love most, beer and soccer. That's what led them to open Moonshot Brewing, YakTriNews reported on June 5.
The brewery features seven different beers, where all but two are created on site. There are also ciders, sparkling water and sparkling juices for underage guests to enjoy.
The brewery also has soccer decorations plastered on the walls, and the owners say games will be played on the TV's they have.
"You can come in, you can hang out with your friends, you can watch a soccer game," Wattenbarger said. "We wanted to build a place where the community could gather and watch USA games, Sounders games and other big games."
There will also be board games, like checkers, chess, Uno and more for people to play.
The brewery will not have food, but are planning on having a food truck onsite some nights. The days when there isn't, guests are invited to bring in food of their own or from somewhere else.

USA, IN: Guggman Haus Brewing Co. already open in Indianapolis
|
A microbrewery and tasting room, Guggman Haus Brewing Co., opened late last month at 1701 Gent Ave., on a site with ties to Indianapolis racing history and three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Wilbur Shaw, the Indianapolis Business Journal reported on June 6.
The property, northeast of the intersection of West 16th Street and Indiana Avenue, is a former home of Boyle Racing, whose cars won the Indianapolis 500 several times from the 1920s through the 1940s. The team's owner was Chicago labor leader Mike Boyle.
Guggman Haus takes its name from the combined last names of the two couples who own the business: Courtney and Derek Guggenberger, and Abby and Ryan Gorman. Courtney and Abby are twin sisters, and all four are 31 years old.
For now, Guggman Haus is running its brewing operations, plus a tasting room, out of a newly renovated 2,500-square-foot house built in 1916.
“It’s a great place to kind of get started and for people to get to know us before expanding into a bigger structure,” Courtney Guggenberger told IBJ. The establishment, which has its grand opening June 15, is limited to customers 21 and older.

USA, VA: Wheatland Spring Farm + Brewery officially open for business
|
Wheatland Spring Farm + Brewery officially opened for business on June 7. Located along Berlin Turnpike just north of the Rt. 9 intersection, it will be open Friday-Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. each week and will offer guests all types of beer—from pilsners to lagers to IPAs, the Loudoun Now reported.
Owners John and Bonnie Branding are operating Loudoun’s newest brewery with a 19th-century, European outlook, employing more traditional brewing techniques that even predate the early 1900s barn that they’re brewing their beer in.
Later this year, their 10-barrel brewing system will make new batches of beer using the 18 acres of wheat growing around the farm and the two acres of organic produce they’ve planted on the property’s perimeter.
“You need farms and you need small and large agriculture to bring high quality beer to the glass,” John Branding said. “It’s a farm brewery at a human scale.”
The couple’s brewing system is also 100 percent electric, meaning there’s no gas emissions going into the western Loudoun air. By the end of the year, they plan to brew 500 barrels, or 15,500 gallons, of their own beer.

Houston’s burgeoning craft beer scene will grow once more when Local Group Brewing opens its doors at 1504 Chapman Street—in Hardy Yards at Houston’s Near Northside—in late 2019, Brewbound reported.
Founded by Houston transplants Todd Donewar, Michael Steeves and James “Huggy Bear” Wolfe, the team behind the 7,500+ square foot brewpub with a view of downtown Houston will focus on its taproom operation, featuring 20+ taps, eight of which will be connected directly to ten-barrel serving tanks for optimal beer freshness. Alongside the taproom, a chef-driven kitchen will pulse out diverse bites made with thoughtfully-sourced ingredients.
“Our goal is to focus on the whole experience within our building, and that includes the beer we brew in small batches, high-quality food, amenities for kids and pets and a relaxing, casual atmosphere that spreads across a patio with killer views and an air-conditioned taproom,” said co-founder Michael Steeves. USA, MI: Axle Brewing Co. to close its doors at the end of June
|
After two years of business, Ferndale brewery and taproom Axle Brewing Co. plans to close its doors at the end of this month, The Detroit News reported on June 7.
Axle Brewing Co. production facility and Livernois Tap restaurant and tap room debuted in June 2017. The 10,000-square-foot brewery and restaurant was well-received by the neighborhood and earned kudos for its chef-driven menu and creative craft beers, some which are canned and distributed around the area.
Those things weren't enough to make ends meet, apparently. A lengthy post to Facebook Friday evening explains the reason for closing is partially because there does not appear to be "a clear path to profitability with our current cost structure and very lean margins on the distribution side of our business in the near term."
Construction also appeared to be a hindrance.
"We are grateful for the support from the city of Ferndale, our neighbors and the resilience of our staff during the six months of road construction we endured last summer and fall, but it definitely took a toll on our revenue and arrested the substantial momentum we had rolling into our first birthday last June."

Ireland: Diageo to open Roe & Co. distillery in Dublin this month
|
Irish whiskey Roe & Co. is set to open its new, €25 million ‘urban distillery’ in the former Guinness Power Station at St James’s Gate in Dublin this month, Scotchwhisky.com reported on June 10.
The distillery, which is situated in Dublin’s Liberties district, will mainly produce double and triple-distilled single malt on three copper pot stills, although it also has the ‘flexibility to experiment with mashbills’, including making single pot still whiskey.
The opening marks a return to Irish whiskey production for owner Diageo, which sold Bushmills distillery in Northern Ireland to Jose Cuervo in 2014.
In 2017 Diageo launched the Roe & Co. brand as a blended Irish whiskey named after George Roe, an influential 19th century whiskey distiller.
The Roe & Co. distillery began the production of malt spirit last week, ahead of its official opening to visitors on 21 June.
Distillery tours will involve ‘fun and flavour’, with visitors taking the ‘boutique experience’ requested to clock in and out as if they were commencing a shift at the power station.
As well as a guided tour through the production facility, visitors can explore the world of flavour and discover their favourite whiskey cocktail in Room 106.

Romania: Romania’s leading brewer invests EUR22 mln to expand capacity

Ursus Breweries, Romania’s largest beer producer, has completed an investment of EUR22 million in expanding the capacity of its factories in Brasov and Timisoara, Robert Uzuna, a director of the company, announced at an event at Brasov, local News.ro reported.
Ursus Breweries is part of Japanese group Asahi, which took over the company from SABMiller in 2017 as part of a regional deal covering the South African group’s assets in Europe.
The production capacity has increased in line with market demand, the company’s official commented. “One of three beers consumed in Romania comes from our portfolio,” he added.
Ursus Breweries is the largest beer producer in Romania. It produces local brands Ursus, Timisoreana, Ciucas, Azuga Nepasteurizat, and distributes international brands Peroni Nastro Azzurro, Asahi Super Dry, Pilsner Urquell, Grolsch, St. Stefanus, Meantime, Oak and Kingswood Cider.

Gambia: Banjul Breweries loses 13 mln dalasi due to excise tax hike

Borri Darboe, commercial manager for Banjul Breweries Limited has unveiled that his company has lost about thirteen millions dalasi (around USD260,500) due to the exercise tax increment from 10% to 75%, the Voice Gambia Newspaper reported on June 12.
“We have lost almost D13 millions in May; so this is not a joking matter. The government needs to understand that. This is one of the biggest companies in the country. We are paying almost fourteen different types of taxes to government,” he said.
He added: “A company that is paying huge tax is a great partner to government. It should be taken seriously and be protected to ensure the government continues receiving its taxes from the company. Allowing the company to close would be detrimental to national development.”
Darboe revealed that between January and May 2019 the company paid taxes of about D124 million.
“My volume is really going down because in May 2019 instead of government receiving D16.6 million on tax from us, they received D7.1 million from us, this indicates that we are dropping,” he pointed out.
