Brewery news The Czech Republic: Brewers seeking to lure consumers with new concept bars
For generations, Czechs have consumed world-beating volumes of beer in the smoky, wood-panelled rooms of their local pubs, all but indistinguishable from each other bar the brand of lager flowing from the taps.

But tastes are changing, Reuters reported on June 5.

Czechs are increasingly shunning fusty old watering holes and draft beer sales are sliding, so the world-famous brewers of pilsner are looking to inject some pizzazz into the traditional pub and attract younger patrons looking for a hip, modern feel.

“I don’t remember the last time I was in a traditional Czech pub,” said Marcel, a 35-year-old IT worker sipping a beer in Prague’s upcoming Karlin neighborhood which is crammed with trendy bars, cafes and restaurants.

People like Marcel are the kinds of drinkers with disposable income that breweries such as Plzensky Prazdroj, the maker of Pilsner Urquell, are seeking to lure back with new concept bars designed to recharge the traditional Czech pub.

The brewery, owned by Japan’s Asahi, plans to open its first “Pilsnerka” bar catering to the hipster crowd in the capital Prague in the coming months. It also plans to launch about 20 pubs this year tied to other beers in its portfolio such as Kozel, the company said.

Brewery news The Netherlands: Heineken buys minority stake in craft brewery Oedipus
Heineken bought a minority share in Amsterdam craft brewery Oedipus, the NL Times reported on June 6.

Specific details about the deal - like how big the Heineken share is and what the Dutch beer giant paid for it - were not revealed, ANP reports.

Oedipus was established in an Amsterdam kitchen in 2011. In 2015 the company opened its own brewery, with a bar attached. Oedipus will remain an independent brewery with its owners leading the business. But Heineken's shares mean that the small craft brewery can make use of Heineken's knowledge on beer and brewing techniques.

"Dreams need investments and we felt the time was right to make an active choice about our future", Oedipus said in a press release. The founders' dreams include a "modern, sustainable farm brewery in or around Amsterdam", and a new bar that pays attention to beer, food, music and culture, according to the news wire.

Large brewers are increasingly interested in craft beers. Heineken itself already acquired the American Lagunitas and owns an online store called Beerwulf that sells various craft beers.

Brewery news The Philippines: San Miguel Food and Beverage Inc. has no plan to sell shares this year
San Miguel Food and Beverage Inc., the food and beer business of conglomerate San Miguel Corp., said it has no plan to sell shares this year, the Manila Standard reported on June 5.

SMFB president Ramon Ang said in an interview following the annual stockholders’ meeting the company saw no need to conduct a follow-on offering as it is already compliant with the minimum public ownership requirement of the Philippine Stock Exchange.

The share price of SMFB rose in recent weeks on speculation it would soon go back to the equities market to conduct a follow-on offering. “We have no current plans to conduct any follow-on offering this year,” Ang said.

SMFB conducted a share sale last year to comply with the 10-percent public float requirement after implementing a share swap with San Miguel to facilitate the merger of San Miguel Foods Co., San Miguel Brewery Inc. and Ginebra San Miguel.

Ang said the outlook for SMFB remained positive despite the planned imposition of additional excise tax on liquor products.

Brewery news Canada: Ontario's abrupt move to end beer sales contract threatens investments
The Ontario government on June 6 passed legislation to end a contract with a beer retailer in Canada’s most populous province calling it a monopoly, but business lobby groups say the abrupt cancellation discourages investment, Reuters reported.

Ontario’s Progressive Conservative government’s surprise proposal last month adds to its list of controversial decisions since coming to power last year, including spending cuts to healthcare and education. The new government is trying to rein in borrowing, which at C$346 billion ($259 billion) in net debt makes it the world’s biggest issuer of sub-sovereign debt.

Privately owned Beer Store is a joint venture between Molson Coors Canada, units of the world’s largest brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev and Japan’s Sapporo Holdings Ltd. It struck a 10-year deal in 2015 with the previous Liberal government to sell beer in Ontario.

The Beer Store accounted for 70% of beer sales by volume in Ontario, according the province. Beer sales in Ontario totalled C$3.3 billion in 2017-18, accounting for nearly 36% of overall Canadian beer sales, according to Statistics Canada.

Canadian and U.S. business lobby groups say the legislation creates uncertainty and dissuades long-term investment.

“Canceling a contract sends an alarming message to the business community in Ontario and beyond which could potentially ...More info on site

Brewery news China: AB InBev relaunches its Boxing Cat craft beer
AB InBev has relaunched its Boxing Cat craft beer with the aim of turning Chinese tastes towards the craft beer category, The Drum reported on June 6.

The business brought on R/GA to give the brand a new look, as well as launch an integrated campaign to educate the Chinese audience that currently link craft beer to being expensive or having a heavy taste.

The answer is a new logo that puts the Boxing Cat as the focus and a set of films that introduce him as Louis, a character that is fighting the world’s boring beers.

“Louie is the embodiment of the brand. He’s there to challenge the ordinary, so we see him patrolling the streets, ridding them of mundane beer, one haymaker at a time,” said AB InBev head of craft and specialities for APAC, Nicolas Eduardo Morelli. “It’s beautiful. The storytelling is impactful and we’re incredibly happy with the result.”

The videos and logos take on a graphic-novel style, aimed to appeal to a younger crowd that has thus far been shunning the craft beer category. According to R/GA, craft beer takes up just 1% of beer sales in China, versus up to 14% globally.

“We saw an enormous opportunity for Boxing ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia & China: XXXX beer named one of top five most recognized Australian brands in China
XXXX beer has been named one of the top five most recognised Australian brands in China, despite the company saying it has put no resources into the market, the Australian Brews News reported on June 6.

Instead Lion, which owns the Queensland-based brand, has attributed the awareness to tourism exposing Chinese visitors to the brand, as well as its ‘lucky’ branding.

The Australian Brands in China 2019 Index was undertaken by researchers from Monash University and Digital Crew, an Australian-Chinese digital agency.

They surveyed 9,000 Chinese men and women aged between 24 and 67 across two Chinese cities, according to the Australian Financial Review.

The researchers found that XXXX was number four in the top 10 Australian brands recognised by Chinese consumers, in a list consisting largely of hospitality and alcohol brands.

Amy Darvill, Brand Director at Lion, spoke to Brews News about the “pleasant surprise” of seeing XXXX make the list for the first time.

She said that Lion has not invested any marketing spend in China, and they do not track sales in the country.

However she put XXXX’s brand recognition in the notoriously difficult Chinese market to several factors.

“[Firstly] the significant number of Chinese tourists who experience the scale of the XXXX brand when ...More info on site
