Barley news Canada: Barley supply down 4% in 2018-19, expected to increase next year
For 2018-19, Canadian barley supply decreased by 4% from 2017-18 to 9.7 million tonnes, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada reported on May 17.

Exports are forecast to increase by 5% to almost 3.0 mln tonnes, the analysts said.

Total domestic use is expected to decrease mainly on less feed use, waste and dockage.

Carry-out stocks are forecast to drop by 28% to 0.9 mln tonnes, which is 44% lower than the past five year average.

World barley production for 2018-19 is estimated at the lowest level in six years, according to USDA. Carry-out stocks will be historically low, including a steep decline in major exporters. Due to lower imports by China and Saudi Arabia, world trade is expected to decrease. Amid tight supplies, world prices for feed barley have been very strong, compared to corn prices. Combined with abundant supplies of corn worldwide, the demand for corn has displaced barley in some countries.

As a result of lower supplies and strong demand, the feed barley price at Lethbridge is forecast at C$255/t, about 12% higher than last year. The average Prairie malt price is 17-24% higher than last year, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said.

Brewery news USA, WI: Wisconsin Brewing Company to acquire Lake Louie Brewery
Wisconsin Brewing Company will acquire Lake Louie Brewery, according to an announcement on May 19.

This is the first purchase involving two brick and mortar breweries in Wisconsin since Miller acquired Leinenkugels in 1988. Conversations about the sale began about two years ago.

Wisconsin Brewing intends to offer jobs to all the employees of Lake Louie.

The Arena area brewery will continue to operate and be used for brands under the Lake Louie banner and special projects for Wisconsin Brewing.

“After 20 great years, we maxed out our brewery. The option was to either borrow a ton of money and expand or merge with a great group of people whom I’ve known and respected for decades,” Tom Porter of Wisconsin Brewing said.

The official purchase is expected to be completed by July 1.

Brewery news USA, GA: Southern Philosophy Brewing Company coming to Bainbridge
The micro-brewery craze is coming to Bainbridge, WTXL ABC 27 reported on May 17.

Very soon, the downtown square will be home to a new and local brewery.

Just over a year ago, Gallagher Dempsey and his wife bought the Fleming building in downtown Bainbridge to follow their dreams. They wanted to open a brewery.

With the help of contractors, Dempsey was able to make the building fit his needs. However, after Hurricane Michael, he and his wife were left to do a lot of the work themselves.

The community has watched as the Fleming Building transformed and many of them are excited to have a new business on the square.

Dempsey, who has brewed beer for more than 10 years, has been hard at work making his first batch of beer for his business, Southern Philosophy Brewing Company.

Southern Philosophy Brewing Company won’t serve just beer. There will also be a bar for mixed drinks, wine, and even a variety of food.

Dempsey hopes to open in late June, but an official date has not yet been announced.

Brewery news USA, NY: Barge Brewing Co. to buy Medina property for its new location
Barge Brewing Co., which formerly operated a microbrewery and restaurant in Medina, has signed a contract to buy a longtime diner in Wheatfield as a new location for its business, Buffalo News reported on May 17.

Barge Brewing presented a sketch plan on May 15 for acquiring the Meeting Place, 2469 Niagara Road in the hamlet of Bergholz, and the adjacent former Bergholz Fire Co. hall, said Walter D. Garrow, chairman of the town Planning Board.

"This location is closer to our target audience," Jeremy Hogan, founder of Barge Brewing, said on May 17.

The purchase contract with Justjam Inc. is contingent on Barge Brewing winning all of the approvals it needs from the town.

Hogan wouldn't disclose the price, but he said he expects to invest a total of about $500,000 in the acquisition and renovation.

The site would be operated as a restaurant, and a microbrewery would be installed in the adjacent building. A beer tasting room would be placed on the second floor of the old fire hall, Garrow said.

The site is zoned commercial, but the buildings would need significant code compliance upgrades, Garrow said.

A public information session will be held once Barge returns with more detailed plans.

Hogan said he hopes to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Other Half Brewing opens location outside of Rochester, NY
Other Half Brewing Cofounders Sam Richardson, Matt Monahan and Andrew Burman recently announced the opening of the brewery’s newest location — Other Half Roc — located 25 miles outside of Rochester, N.Y., in East Bloomfield, Ontario County, the Craft Brewing Business reported on May 16.

Housed in the former Nedloh Brewing building, the renovated 8,000-sq-ft space sits on eight acres and features Other Half’s taproom and production facility. The taproom offers 20 lines of Other Half beer on draft, as well as limited offerings and collaborations from brewers and vintners from the area, and around the world. In addition, the brewery plans to implement a full sour program to complement its more well-known IPAs.

“We are excited to join the amazing beer scene in western New York and to share our beers directly with the guests who continue to support us,” said Matt Monahan.

The taproom’s interior features a vast A-frame ceiling with large wood beams and industrial finishes. Custom-built communal tables and expansive windows line the building, providing views of the pastoral landscape and spacious outdoor seating. Small snacks are available and guests can expect frequent visits from local food trucks.

Brewery news Canada: Canadian using more pot, drinking less beer, survey shows
Pot use in Canada is about twice what was previously reported, according to a surprising survey published on May 20 by Cowen and Co.

Canadian pot producers such as Aurora Cannabis have achieved disappointing sales since that country legalized recreational sales to adults in October 2018. So the cannabis bulls at Cowen decided to do a channel check, by surveying some 1,800 Canadians on their use of cannabis and alcohol. The survey found more Canadians than ever use pot, especially edible products. They’re also drinking less beer.

Canada’s illegal pot market must be bigger than expected, Cowen analysts conclude. And that makes the research firm more optimistic about the long-run market that’s available to the country’s licensed producers, once the legal industry gets past early problems with production and distribution.

In previous surveys conducted by the Canadian government, fewer than 15% of consumers acknowledged having used cannabis in the past month. Cowen found that 40% of those it surveyed in Ontario and Alberta reported pot use in the past month. About 75% said they’d used it sometime in their lives, compared with less than 60% in previous government surveys.

“The growth is not entirely surprising,” writes Cowen analyst Vivien Azer and her colleagues, because ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Orleans Brewing Company holds grand opening on May 11
After more than two years of planning, patience and persistence, a popular Orléans brewery has finally popped the top on a long-awaited brew pub at their location on Innes Road, OttawaMatters.com reported on May 15.

Orleans Brewing Company opened in February but was waiting for better weather and to complete some finishing touches before the grand opening on May 11, which came as a bit of a relief for husband and wife team Célia and Yann Lemieux, co-owners of the brewery.

“It took almost three years from the day we registered our name to the day that we opened,” Célia Lemieux said in a sit-down interview with OttawaMatters.com.

It had been Yann’s dream to own a brewery, buying his first home brew kit when he was 16, so with Celia’s marketing background, the serial entrepreneurs decided to make a go of it.

“Wherever we would go and travel, we would always look for the craft breweries and we were in Portugal one year and we did the whole country and found literally one microbrewery,” she said.

“We contemplated opening one there…and then we came back here and realized there was none in Orleans (at the time), so instead of uprooting the whole family, we decided ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NE: Blue Blood Brewing Co. closing its doors
A popular Lincoln brewery is apparently closing its doors, months after being sued for not paying rent on time, according to court documents, KLKN reported on May 16.

Blue Blood Brewing Co. said in a Facebook post on May 16 that the brewery had been for sale for a few weeks, and that its landlord "has unexpectedly shut our doors."

The lawsuit, filed in March in Lancaster County Court by Robbers Cave LLC, alleges Blue Blood owes $25,590 in unpaid rent and late fees.

Robbers Cave is seeking judgement in that amount, plus interest and other fees that accrue each month.

The minimum fixed monthly rent under the company's lease is $13,471, according to the lawsuit.

In the lawsuit, Robbers Cave demanded Blue Blood and owner Brian Podwinski vacate the property, located near 10th and High Street, saying the proper legal notice was served.

The case was scheduled to go before a judge again on May 16.

Requests for comment by Channel 8 Eyewitness to Blue Blood and an attorney for Robbers Cave were not immediately answered on May 16.

"We sincerely apologize to our employees who have not been given sufficient opportunity to look for new employment as we had planned ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: The Brewing Projekt ready to welcome guests at its new home
One of Eau Claire’s craft breweries has been working hard renovating their home in the Cannery District. Now, The Brewing Projekt is welcoming you in for a pint, WQOW TV News 18 reported on May 15.

“One of the concepts behind the The Brewing Projekt is that it’s a project, so it’s always constantly on-going and potentially changing,” said Audrey Andrews, office manager for The Brewing Projekt.

It’s been nearly two years since The Brewing Projekt has moved into its new location at 1807 North Oxford Avenue.

“We started out in kind of a small, ramshackle sort of space, and kept getting bigger and bigger,” brewer Matt Jagow told News 18. “Knowing that this was our final destination to have this beautiful big space.”

A lot of renovation has gone on inside and out, to create a location for craft beer lovers to come together and enjoy the natural beauty of Eau Claire with a brew in hand.

“The goal is for it to be an event space and kind of destination space in Eau Claire, beyond just brewing,” said Andrews.

The combination taproom and brewery offers ample seating, along with space outside that offers a clear view of the Chippewa River.

“I feel like I’m a ...More info on site

Brewery news Cameroon: Castel Group’s Cameroon brewery reports 17% net income increase
Brewing company SABC, local arm of Castel Group, reported a net result of XAF25.67 billion for the 2018 financial year, an improvement by 17% compared to the XAf21.93 billion the previous year, Business in Cameroon said on May 21.

According to the company, this figure represents 7.4% of turnover against 6.5% of 2017. Pre-tax turnover in FY2018 was XAF345.6 billion, up 3.2% compared to FY2017.

SABC says achieving these strong performances required an investment of XAF22,583 billion in 2018 against XAF23,969 billion in 2017.

Investments in 2018 mainly reinforced the company’s logistical and industrial capacities through the acquisition of a PET (polyethylene terephthalate) line in Koumassi which was commissioned in April 2018; the transformation of the soft drinks line into a mixed line in Garoua; the creation of a packaging unit and a Modern Trade store in the Yaoundé mall etc.

Brewery news Nigeria: AB InBev expects investments in Nigeria brewery to reach $400 mln
Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev), the world’s largest beer maker, expects the total investment in its new brewery at Sagamu in Nigeria, to be up to $400 million, Chief Executive Carlos Brito was quoted as saying by Reuters on May 22.

The $250 million brewery has already started operation and capacity will be expanded in phases, Brito told reporters at a media briefing in Johannesburg, without giving a timeline for the next phase.

“Nigeria (is) becoming a more and more important market as we grow in that market,” he said.

“I mean we’re growing double digits, we didn’t grow in the past as fast because we were lacking capacity and now that we have capacity, strong brands and (a) great group of people we’re challenging the status quo there.”

Brewery news South Korea: Hite Jinro struggling to meet demand for its newest beer Terra
Hite Jinro’s new beer Terra is flying off the shelves, the Korea JoongAng Daily reported on May 18.

It’s been less than two months since Terra was first released on March 21, but the company is already struggling to meet demand.

One of the reasons Hite Jinro is failing to brew as much beer as needed is because the delivery of some ingredients has been delayed. The company said it expects the situation to normalize next week.

In the first 50 days after the beer - which uses barley grown in a clean and unpolluted environment - was released, 1.3 million boxes were sold. That’s the equivalent to 39 million 300-milliliter bottles (10.1 fluid ounces) and the most beer of a single brand that has ever been sold in 50 days.

According to Hite Jinro, as of April 29, it had sold 1.05 million boxes, also setting another record of selling more than one million boxes in the shortest period. That’s same as selling 9.4 bottles every second.

Other Hite Jinro’s beer brands, such as Hite, Max and Dry Finish, were able to sell 200,000 to 300,000 boxes in a month. To meet the growing demand, Hite Jinro had to more than double ...More info on site

Brewery news Finland: High taxes make beer lovers shop abroad
Higher taxes on beer in Finland have once again spurred consumers to bring in more from Estonia, the Federation of the Brewing and Soft Drinks Industry (Panimoliitto) said on May 20.

Last year people returning from Finland's southern neighbour, Estonia, brought back significantly less beer after the Baltic country raised its alcohol taxes.

But since Finland hiked its taxes on beer at the beginning of this year, the trend has again reversed with imports rising in the February-through-April period, according to a study carried out by the Research and Analysis Center (TAK) for the industry group.

The drinks federation says it is worried by this development.

"The tax hike can be seen in the import figures for the early part of the year in a clear, unfortunate manner. This should not be the goal of a single Finnish legislator. We are losing; specifically in tax revenue to the state and in Finnish employment as well as the livelihood of a primary production industry, says the head of the drinks industry lobby, former MEP Riikka Pakarinen.

In the February-through-April period, the amount of beer brought back from visits to Estonia jumped by some 40 percent compared to a year earlier. Personal imports of cider and pre-mixed ...More info on site
