USA, CA: Crusader Brewing Company joins Bakersfield’s brewing scene

Crusader Brewing Company is the latest brewery to open in Bakersfield in 2019, KERO 23ABC News reported on March 17.
Crusader Brewing is the 4th brewery to move into Bakersfield brewing district in Southwest Bakersfield. They join Lengthwise Brewing Company, Dionysus Brewing Company and also newly opened Great Change Brewing in the district. Temblor Brewing Compan y is the fifth Bakersfield brewery, but it's not in the brewing district.
Crusader Brewing opened off District Blvd just down the street from Lengthwise Brewing Company.
There are currently has six beers on tap at Crusader Brewing. Co-owner Bailey Hale said those styles of beer will fill a need in an IPA and sour heavy brewing district. He said, “We wanted to take a step back and do more traditional styles of beer that have been drank for hundreds of years."
Hale said there's another way Crusader is different. He said they’re the first veteran-owned brewery in Bakersfield. While co-owner Chris McEnulty was a Ventura police officer, Hale served in the California Army National Guard.
“I went to Iraq in 2008-2009," said Hale. "I was a fixed wing flight engineer, I was a flight engineer for a fixed wing aircraft, C-23 Sherpa.”

USA, NY: Back Barn Brewing is both newest and oldest craft brewery in Schenectady County
|
Schenectady County’s newest craft brewery is in some ways its oldest, The Daily Gazette reported on March 16.
Back Barn Brewing makes its beer in a reclaimed 1700s barn and serves it in an adjacent 1800s barn along Route 20, one of New York state’s earliest through routes.
Owner Brenda Schworm opened the tap room Feb. 23 after more than three years of preparation. Brew master Klaus Kuhland put the first batch in kegs Feb. 15, after more than a quarter century with brewing as either a hobby or a job.
“I have two passions,” Schworm said. “One is old barns, the other is good craft beer. And I wanted to bring them together.”
As of Tuesday, March 12, Back Barn had four beers on tap: two IPAs, a brown ale and a wheat beer — each a very traditional style but each with some tweaks and variations that make them stand out from others of their kind.
There are four more taps behind the bar, disconnected for now. A stout, a pilsner and a dunkelweiss maturing in the fermenters will soon flow through them.

New to Chicago is Ike & Oak Brewing Company, conceptualized by multidisciplinary architecture firm, fcSTUDIO inc., Brewbound reported on March 16.
Situated just outside of Chicago in Woodridge, Illinois, Ike & Oak Brewing Company offers an intimate perspective on beer, blending the industrial design principals of a traditional brewery with an upscale restaurant to create a warm community-based environment. In designing the space, brewery ownership tasked acclaimed architecture and interiors firm fcSTUDIO inc with transforming an existing retail space into an inviting venue. The refurbished building originally housed four separate retail tenants, each exhibiting individual storefront systems, stone detailing, and lighting, challenging the fcSTUDIO team to bring each of these disparate elements together into one cohesive concept, inside and out.
The bar features 16 taps that include draft beer, house-made cocktails and a cider option; a selection of spirits will also be served at the bar. USA, CA: Over Town Brewing holds grand opening in Monrovia
|
Over Town Brewing founders Carlos Plazola and Ryan McKay were brewing the last batches, tasting the suds and finalizing beer names for the grand opening on March 15 — or as McKay phrased it: “Putting on the last shiny touches.”
Upon entry, it’s clear that they put their degrees in design, multimedia and marketing fields at Woodbury University, where they met, to good use. The decor is reminiscent of Route 66 with picnic-style bench tables and a USA board where people can pop beer bottle caps into holes in each state.
The name hails from the vernacular of McKay’s hometown, Catalina Island, where residents call the mainland, or Los Angeles, “over town.”
As a wood-crafter, McKay said he and Plazola basically hand-built the place from the ground up. They tore out all the old furnishings and repainted, built the bars, railings, installed the cabinets, doors and assembled the brew house area.
“It’s very much our place,” McKay said.
With a 46-person capacity, intimate tap room and open brewing facility, customers are not cordoned off by a huge window; they can sit right in front of the equipment and see how the beer got into their glass.

USA, WA: 5 Rights Brewing to open its doors in Marysville on March 22
|
5 Rights Brewing has successfully navigated a significant detour and plans to open its new location in Marysville next weekend, the Washington Beer Blog reported on March 14.
“After almost 3 years of some of the craziest ups and downs imaginable we are ecstatic to announce that we are finally opening up our new brewery and taproom to host you the RIGHT way,” the company said in an Instagram post. “Located in the historic Carr’s Harware Building on 3rd Street in Marysville, our new home is a dream come true… We know it’s been a long time coming and we are so grateful for our passionate 5 Rights family members… Your encouragement and support has been epic, to say the least, and it doesn’t hurt that you like to drink your share of the RIGHT beer.”
They will have 24 beers on tap, plus two ciders, one kombucha, and one root beer. The taproom is family-friendly and a food menu will be available from Wander Coffee Bar, another new business in historic downtown Marysville.

USA, IL: Howard Street Brewing Company eyeing May opening
|
Howard Street Brewing Company will open in May, just east of the El stop in the old Howard Theatre Building in Chicago, the RogersEdge Reporter said on March 14.
Owner Chuck Patella said he’s been brewing his own beer for years, and finally decided to “go public” with his passion.
“I’ve been making beer for about 10 years now – nothing professional, just in my house,” Patella said. “… It sorta got to the point where I was just making it so much that it was going pretty quickly that I decided that it was probably time to start doing something professionally.”
Don’t look for televisions all over the place, or live bands. Patella, 40, said the business will be all about beer, and the creative process that goes into it.
“We want this to be a place that inspires ideas and we think the best way to do that is to not have a lot of outside distractions,” he said. “We’re not going to have TV’s we’re not going to have live bands, it’s really just going to be the brew.”
Patella’s wife works next door at the Factory Theatre, which is what lead him to choose the location.

USA, TN: Grind City Brewing Co. to start construction on March 22
|
Construction will start on Friday, March 22, on the new Grind City Brewing Co. overlooking the Wolf River Harbor, The Daily Memphian reported on March 15.
A groundbreaking ceremony will be held for the $11 million renovation and transformation of a former chair-making factory into a brewery and taproom.
The site is just north of Uptown. The investment in the new brewery expands Downtown redevelopment farther north into an industrial and residential neighborhood that has been economically distressed in recent history.
“We’re hoping to start brewing beer in May and open sometime in June or July,” Bill Seely said. The Varsity Spirit president and his son, Hopper Seely, are establishing the brewery at 83 Waterworks.
The brewery will be atop a hill between Wolf River Harbor to the west and Second Street to the east. Waterworks will eventually provide the most direct access to the brewery, but now dead-ends before it reaches the property.
The taproom will open after Waterworks is extended onto the property, Seely said.
The brewery’s backyard, with elevated views of the harbor and Downtown, will be a beer garden with an outdoor music venue and fire pit.

EU: Cereal crops generally in decent condition thanks to mild winter
|
Cereal crops in the European Union are generally in decent condition after a mild winter but more rain is needed in a dry swathe of southern Europe, the EU's crop monitoring service said on March 18.
Crops suffered minimal frost damage this winter and benefitted from unusually warm temperatures last month to advance in their growth, the MARS service said in a monthly report.
However, low rainfall that accompanied the warm spell had accentuated dryness across southern Europe and in parts of central Europe following drought last year, it said.
Reservoir levels were currently low in Spain, Portugal and Italy, which could hamper irrigation in summer, it added.
Like other crop observers, MARS said rapeseed rather than cereals had been most hurt by drought so far, with farmers reducing sowings and also replacing some struggling rapeseed plants with other crops like spring barley.
In its first yield forecasts for the 2019 harvest, based on historical trends, MARS mostly anticipated higher yields compared with last year's drought-affected production.
The soft wheat yield in the EU was projected at 6.04 tonnes per hectare (t/ha), up 7.4 percent from 2018 and 1.7 percent above the average of the past five years.

UK: Pending tax reform causing dispute in normally convivial brewing world

Trouble is brewing in the normally convivial world of beer making, with an unseemly fracas developing over pending reform of the tax breaks that have fuelled the huge growth in the number of small brewers in the UK, The Guardian reported on March 16.
Anyone enjoying the wide array of lagers, ales, stouts and porters at this weekend’s bustling BeerX exhibition in Liverpool, organised by trade body the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA), could raise a glass to Gordon Brown.
As chancellor, in 2002, he implemented small brewers’ relief (SBR), offering them a discount on beer duty, at a stroke slashing one of their largest costs.
SBR was a catalyst of the UK’s “craft beer revolution”, during which the number of small brewers expanded from about 400 to 1,800 or more today.
SIBA estimates that UK drinkers can choose from between 10,000 and 15,000 different beers.
That is before you take into account one-off special occasion beers or collaborations between brewers, a common occurrence in an industry that has garnered a reputation for a friendly spirit.

The Czech Republic & UK: Budejovicky Budvar worrying about Brexit impact
|
The Budejovicky Budvar brewery in the Czech Republic managed to survive a decades-long trademark battle over whether it could call its beer Budweiser. But now it faces another potential threat: Brexit, The Washington Post reported on March 18.
The United Kingdom is one of the brewer’s top five markets, though it won’t say exactly how much beer it sends there. Like many other businesses, it’s concerned about what will happen if Britain leaves the European Union without an agreement governing trade.
That exit is due to happen on March 29, though with political wrangling still very much underway, a delay looks likely.
That’s meant worrying uncertainty for businesses like Budvar that rely on being able to send their goods to Britain without inspection delays at borders.
“It’s about two weeks to Brexit and nobody knows anything,” said Budvar director Petr Dvorak. “We’re now waiting for what happens because it’s going to be uncertain till the last moment.”
Budvar’s business has been growing — it increased exports by 8.5 percent to reach 1.075 million hectoliters (28.4 million gallons) last year. The brewer reached its production capacity in recent years and has been expanding to be able to produce more.

Spain & China: Spanish brewers increase shipments to China

Beer brewed in Spain has been exported in ever increasing volumes to China during the last 10 years, the Director of Cerveceros de Espana, Jacobo Olalla, explained to Xinhua in an exclusive interview. This organization represents the interests of Spanish brewers.
Although Spain has always been associated with wine production, the long hot summers mean that the Spanish also have a long tradition of drinking beer. However, Spanish beer export is a relatively recent phenomenon.
Olalla explained that the breakthrough came with the 2008 economic crisis: "Over the past decade, the Spanish brewing sector has made a big effort in the export market with spectacular results. During the last 10 years, we have seen exports grow by 250 percent," he said.
The crisis had led to a downturn in domestic beer consumption, and breweries turned to the export market to help compensate for lower domestic sales.
"First we looked to countries around us, such as Portugal or countries with a beer drinking tradition, such as the UK, but then the chance to export to China appeared," explained Olalla.
According to data supplied by Cerveceros de Espana, Spanish beer exports to China increased 672 times in value and 628 times in volume between 2008 and 2018.

Bent over a barrel, Greek microbrewer Sophocles Panagiotou lovingly draws a measure of his Septem Red Ale into a glass cylinder and expertly transfers it to a glass.
A decade ago at the start of the financial crisis, the chemistry graduate and former winemaker took a chance on building his Septem microbrewery in a family field on the island of Evia, some 200 kilometres (120 miles) east of Athens.
"It was a crazy idea. At the time, they looked at me as if I were an alien," Panagiotou told AFP, in his fully-automated factory and bottling plant, which now produces 12 different beer labels.
Tens of thousands of small and medium-sized enterprises were obliterated by the economic crisis in 2010 that brought Greece to its knees and sent unemployment soaring.
But the microbrewery sector managed to grow amid the ruins, as local products benefited from a fall in imported goods.
Greece had fewer than a dozen breweries 10 years ago.
Today, there are 45 microbreweries, said Panagiotou, recently elected president of the Union of Greek Breweries, which represents both micro and bigger firms.
The financial crisis, which saw Athens granted a eurozone bailout in return for swingeing austerity measures, helped spur the microbrewery sector.

World: Carlsberg CEO’s pay unlikely to rise this year

The chief executive officer of Carlsberg A/S, Cees ’t Hart, is unlikely to get a pay rise this year as the board bows to public pressure to curb remuneration, Bloomberg reported on March 14.
Hart, whose total pay jumped 22 percent last year to about $8 million, will essentially have his salary frozen, according to Chairman Flemming Besenbacher. The decision follows criticism in local media.
“Aside from marginal adjustments, we don’t expect to see increases in next year’s report, even if the results continue to be as strong as they’ve been in recent years,” Besenbacher said, according to a transcript of his comments at the annual general meeting on March 13.
Claus Wiinblad, the head of equity investments at ATP, said Carlsberg’s habit of paying big salaries “unfortunately increases the risk” that other companies follow suit, which he said would be a step in the wrong direction, according to a transcript of his comments provided by the fund.

Singapore: Heineken seeking growth by launching non-alcoholic Heineken in Singapore

After acquiring its rivals to become Europe’s largest and the world’s second-largest brewery company in recent years, Heineken International is now seeking growth by expanding its sizeable beer portfolio to include the fledgling, yet fast-growing, non-alcoholic beer segment, the Edge Singapore reported on March 15.
Heineken 0.0 is the non-intoxicating, low calorie answer to the company’s namesake beer. It boasts just 69 calories per 330ml.
More importantly, it qualifies as a non-alcoholic lager as it contains only trace amounts of alcohol.
The beverage was first introduced in Barcelona in 2017 before launching in 14 other markets within the same year. Last month, it was officially launched in Singapore to further increase the product’s reach to 51 markets around the world.
According to the company, over a million hectolitres of Heineken 0.0 have been sold globally.
Andy Hewson, managing director of Asia Pacific Breweries (Singapore), a subsidiary of the Heineken group, says sample surveys conducted here have shown promise of consumer acceptance – although he unable to share local sales figures considering how the product has only just hit the shelves in Singapore.

World: AB InBev to appoint former Altria Group chief executive Martin Barrington as new chairman

Anheuser-Busch InBev is set to appoint Martin Barrington, the former chief executive of cigarette maker Altria Group, as its new chairman, in a major governance shake-up that will also see 3G Capital’s managing partner Alexandre Behring leave the board, The Financial Times reported on March 19.
Carlos Alberto da Veiga Sicupira, the Brazilian billionaire and one of the founders of 3G Capital, is also set to step down, to be replaced by his daughter Cecilia Sicupira.
According to people familiar with the matter, the changes are intended to telegraph to shareholders that the brewer’s board is determined to reverse a period of steep share price declines. The maker of Budweiser and Stella Artois is struggling to pay down more than $100 bln in debt racked up from acquisitions, and faces slowing demand for beer in its biggest market, the US.
Mr Behring’s departure also shows the board wants to signal its distance from 3G Capital, whose founders were instrumental in turning AB InBev into the world’s largest brewer. 3G is renowned for its debt-fuelled dealmaking and ferocious cost-cutting, but the Brazilian-backed private equity group’s methods have fallen out of favour with investors lately with the implosion of packaged foodmaker Kraft Heinz.
