Barley news Canada: Malting barley prices expected to begin at minimum C$5 per bushel this year
We have entered the time of year when the farm shows are in progress. The Crop Production Show in Saskatoon just finished and the Brandon Ag Days will begin this week. Traditionally this is when the maltsters and grain companies reveal pricing ideas for their malt barley programs, Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre (CMBTC) reported on January 23.

Farmers anticipate malt barley prices to begin at a minimum of C$5/bushel (bu) and higher. There was not much in the manner of published prices from the Saskatoon Show, however C$5/bu was indicated for Sept/Oct. by some exporters and one maltster began its new crop program at C$5.25/bu.

To recap, the barley market has generally been good to barley farmers this past crop year. Malt barley prices have ranged from a low of C$230/tonne (C$5/bu) to a current price of C$268/tonne (C$5.85/bu) for June/July delivery. The feed barley market has also traded at attractive price levels throughout the year and it is presently trading at C$255/tonne in Lethbridge. The new crop bid is C$220 (C$4.75/bu) for Sept/Oct delivery. The situation for the feed, malt and export market will bring the barley carryover close to 1 million tonnes or less, which reflects the ...More info on site

Whisky news USA: Irish whiskey sales hold strong despite decline in alcohol consumption
Irish whiskey sales in the U.S. have held strong despite a decline in alcohol consumption, new data reveals.

Preliminary figures from International Wine and Spirits Research (IWSR), show that Irish whiskey sales rose 13.5 percent to 4.65 million cases last year, the IrishCentral reported.

Irish whiskey, which comprises six percent of the total US whiskey market, was the second fastest growing brown spirit after Japanese whiskey, which saw a 23.1 percent increase in 2018. Japanese whiskey represents 0.1 percent of the market.

Overall whiskey sales were up 4.1 percent but were outdone by other spirits such as tequila (up 8.5 percent) and mescal (up 32.4 percent).

Although Irish whiskey continues to record double-digit growth in the U.S., there is a concern that the rise in sales is slowing, The Irish Times reports. In 2015, growth in Irish whiskey sales hit 19 percent, when more than 3 million cases were sold.

For the third year in a row, alcohol consumption in the U.S. has continued to decline, with figures showing that total consumption dropped 0.8 percent to 3.345 billion cases.

The Irish Times has reported that rival whiskey producers have banded together to access EU funding in hopes of carving out opportunities in China and Japan ...More info on site

Malt news USA: Attis Industries acquires Sunoco’s New York malting facility
Attis Industries Inc., a diversified innovation and technology holding company announced on January 22 that it has entered into a definitive asset purchase agreement with Sunoco LP (“Sunoco”) to acquire and operate its corn ethanol plant and grain malting operation in Fulton, NY, the Owego County Today reported.

The plant will become the essential element of Attis’ expanding technology portfolio as it develops the site into the most comprehensive Green Tech campus for renewable fuels in the country.

Total consideration for the divestiture is $20 million in cash.

The transaction is subject to regulatory clearances and customary closing conditions and is expected to close in the first quarter of 2019.

Attis expects to finance the transaction with non-dilutive secured debt financing.

Included within the acquisition is the 1886 Malt House which is a direct beneficiary of incentives designed to promote the local farm to brewery industry.

In 2013, New York created a farm brewery law to provide licenses only to those farmers whose beer is made primarily from locally grown farm products.

Under this program, the Malt House will receive some tax-exempt status and contribute to the $4 billion per year craft brewery business in the state of New York.

“The state of New York has continually demonstrated ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Abe Erb Brewing opens third location in Ontario
Abe Erb Brewing has announced the opening of its third location in Ontario’s Waterloo Region, the Canadian Beer News reported on January 21.

Abe Erb at the Mill opened over the weekend in Ayr, a small community near Cambridge in the Township of North Dumfries.

Located in a former feed mill at 143 Northumberland Street, the restaurant and brewpub shares space with the newest outpost of Settlement Coffee Roasters, a café and roastery chain founded by Abe Erb president and CEO Rob Theodosiou.

The new establishment includes a brewhouse producing a rotating selection of beers for the bar, where they will be pouring alongside beers brewed at the other Abe Erb locations in Waterloo and Kitchener. It also offers a larger food selection than the other Abe Erb restaurants, with pizzas and flatbreads added to the menu of burgers, pasta, and other comfort food favourites.

A fourth Abe Erb location – also featuring a Settlement café – is currently under construction in Guelph as part of The Junction, a new mixed-use development in a former CN Rail building.

Abe Erb at the Mill is open from 11:00 AM daily.

Brewery news USA, PA: Sly Fox Brewing to open new location in Pittsburgh
Sly Fox Brewing Co. is coming to Pittsburgh.

This fall, the eastern Pennsylvania-based brewery will open a nearly 6,000-square-foot location on the South Side, NEXTpittsburgh reported on January 21.

Sly Fox will occupy a space in The Highline development, formerly known as the Terminal Building, on E. Carson Street. The company, which annually produces 22,000 barrels of beer, will use the site as a brew lab to test experimental batches and create one-off beers suited to the local market.

A smaller satellite pub will open Downtown, in an as-yet-unannounced location.

“Why Pittsburgh? Why not? It’s a really cool place,” says John Giannopoulos, co-owner of the brewery. “It’s a metropolitan area and where there’s more people, there’s more beer.

“We don’t tend to open our brewpubs in strip malls where we are surrounded by a bunch of national chains,” he adds. “We like to be more organic. The Highline is a good fit for us.”

After years as a homebrewer, John’s brother, Pete Giannopoulos, founded Sly Fox Brewhouse & Eatery in 1995 in Phoenixville, a suburb of Philly. The business introduced many locals to craft beer and soon amassed a loyal following.

John came on board in 2004 to manage the new 20-barrel production brewery and accompanying restaurant ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: Books & Brews acquires local brewer Flat12 Bierwerks
Indianapolis-based Books & Brews, the fast-growing used bookstore and brewpub chain, has acquired local craft brewery Flat12 Bierwerks, the companies announced on January 21.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Books & Brews said it plans to continue operating the acquired business under the Flat12 name.

Flat12 has been brewing all of Books & Brews’ flagship and seasonal beers for the past two years. The two businesses formed a partnership when Books & Brews launched a strategy in early 2017 to open franchised and company-owned locations throughout Indiana.

Books & Brews has opened seven stores since then, bringing its total to nine. Its first out-of-state location is set to open later this year, in Oxford, Ohio.

“I have the upmost respective for the crew at Flat12,” Books & Brews Founder and CEO Jason Wuerfel said in written comments. “When we were looking to expand our concept, they jumped on board to partner with us without hesitation. To be able to join forces with them and have a staff and facility of their caliber in the Books & Brews family is a dream come true. I’m extremely excited for the future.”

Flat12 was founded in 2012 at 414 Dorman St. in the Holy Cross neighborhood ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Caps Off Brewing Co. hoping to launch in St. Thomas in July
Fran and Rick Dunseith are taking their hobby and making it a business.

The couple is in the process of applying for their liquor license to open their own craft brewery called Caps Off Brewing Co. on Curtis Street in St. Thomas, the St. Thomas Times-Journal reported on January 22.

The idea stemmed from when Fran Dunseith’s started fermenting healthy food eight years ago. Rick Dunseith decided he wanted to try making his own home-brewed beer. And the rest is history.

“For a long time, many people went to Rick and said, ‘Can we buy your beer?’” Fran Dunseith said. “Opening the brewery was kind of a dream and things started falling into place. We just want to produce good quality beer.”

The Dunseiths are leasing a space at 168 Curtis Street and having it outfitted so they can brew their own craft beer with as many local ingredients as possible.

“We want a space where the community can gather and just have a place to hang out,” Fran Dunseith said.

Rick Dunseith said the goal for Caps Off Brewing Co. is to have low key, relaxing atmosphere.

“We want to produce really, really big beers. Very flavourful beers,” he said.

The brewery will have four staple beers; ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NJ: Hackensack Brewing Company set to open its doors next month
Hackensack's second brewery is set to open its doors next month, just feet away from the city's first, creating a "Brewer's Row" for North Jersey beer lovers, NorthJersey.com reported on January 22.

Hackensack Brewing Company, on Johnson Avenue, will have its grand opening Saturday, Feb. 2, said co-owner Mike Jones. The brewery will open at 2 p.m. and have eight beers on tap, including an Irish stout, a Belgian dubbel and the trendy New England-style IPA.

"I could have opened two or three weeks ago with two or three taps," Jones said. "But I wanted customers to have a large selection. I wanted a diversity of beers. I want there to be a beer for everyone."

For Jones, a Hackensack native and resident, the brewery's opening is a dream nearly four years in the making. His journey from beer lover to beer maker began when he brewed his first batch of beer in a closet in a high-rise apartment in Hackensack.

From there, Jones continued home-brewing and began racking up beer accolades, including medals for his Fairmount IPA, named for the Hackensack neighborhood, and a dark German lager, at the New Jersey State Fair in 2016. Jones' lager was awarded the gold medal in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Good City Brewing opens new production facility in Milwaukee
Milwaukee-based Good City Brewing LLC has quietly opened its new downtown production facility and taproom at the Entertainment Block near the Fiserv Forum, BizTimes.com reported on January 24.

Good City is the first tenant to open on the strip, which spans Vel R. Phillips Avenue between West Highland and West Juneau Avenues.

“We’re excited for this to become the craft beer spot in Milwaukee for a town that loves its beer,” Good City co-founder Dan Katt said.

The taproom has been semi-operational since last weekend, opening its doors after Marquette University and Bucks basketball games, but its official soft opening is set for 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25.

Full operations, with extended hours and food service, will begin early next month, but until then, the brewery will open daily at 4 p.m. serving beer only. Additional details will be announced within the coming days.

The 11,000-square-foot space has a total capacity of 550. The main floor, with seating for 200 people, includes a dining area, open kitchen, and a 32-tap bar. The second floor houses a private and public event space, dubbed Good City Commons, that can fit up to 350 people and is complete with city views and an outdoor patio overlooking the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Homer Hops Brewing in development at family-owned hop farm in Cortland County
A three-year-old, family-owned hop farm may soon be home to a new family-and-friends-owned brewery and tasting room, Syracuse.com reported on January 23.

Homer Hops Brewing is in development on the site of the Homer Hops farm at 722 State Route 90, just west of the village of Homer in Cortland County. Work is underway, but the actual opening could be delayed by the ongoing shutdown of the federal government.

For now, Jason Kristof and his family are aiming for opening by the spring of 2020. The project was recently cleared by the Homer town board, which had to change some zoning laws to allow for a brewery, winery, distillery or cidery. The brewery is awaiting its state license, which should come within the month. Homer Hops applied for its federal license in November. There is likely to be a backlog in the processing of federal licenses when the shutdown ends.

“Otherwise, we’re ready to rock and roll,” Jason Kristof said.

Homer Hops farm is operated by Jason Kristof and his siblings Tony, Wally and Tessa. They grow Cascade, Centennial, Willamette and Nuggett hops -- all workhorse varieties for American-style beers -- on a 15-acre farm. They plans to add more varieties in the future.

Brewery news USA, MS: Lucky Town brewery preparing to shut down
The only beer maker in Mississippi's capital city is preparing to shut down, The News Tribune reported on January 23.

The Clarion Ledger reports that the Lucky Town brewery opened in 2012 in the Jackson suburb of Gluckstadt. It moved to a building near downtown Jackson in 2014.

The brewery's owners say they are stopping production because of a "string of issues that have made doing business increasingly difficult."

Some beer remains on hand, and the tap room remains open until March 9.

Brewery news South Korea: Local brewers complaining of tax disadvantages compared to foreign distributors
Sets of four to six imported beers sold at 10,000 won ($8.85) are one of the hottest deals at local convenience stores in South Korea, the Korea JoongAng Daily reported on January 25.

Their popularity is driving the rapid growth of imported beer in Korea.

However, Korean beer companies are complaining that they face a tax disadvantage compared to foreign distributors.

The controversy started when the Korea Customs Service started investigating whether Heineken misreported its production costs to escape taxes.

Korean beer companies claim that the reason for the boom of foreign beers is because of the unfair tax system. They advocate a per-unit tax where the tax is imposed not on the price of the drink but at the volume of the drink and percentage of alcohol in it.

Currently, a liquor tax, education tax and value-added tax are imposed on beer produced in Korea.

If the factory price of a beer is 1,000 won, the liquor tax is 720 won, education tax is 216 won and added-value tax is 194 won, leading to a total price of 2,130 won. For imported beer, the beer is taxed at a similar rate as Korean beer, plus possible tariffs, but it is based on ...More info on site

Brewery news Tunisia: Tunisian Beverage Manufacturing Company reports record beer sales in 2018
2018 was a good year for the Tunisian Beverage Manufacturing Company (SFBT). The first brewer in Tunisia managed to achieve record sales of beer, the African Manager reported on January 24.

As of December 31, 2018, the total turnover of the SFBT reached 650 million dinars against 571 million a year earlier, up 13.8%.

This performance is mainly attributed to the 21% increase in the turnover of local beer, which went from 360.7 to 436.6 million dinars between December 2017 and December 2018 (+76 million dinars), generated by the sale of 184.4 million litres of beer.

Sales of soft drinks rose by 5.6% to 150 million dinars at the end of December.

On the production side, the company produced 1,453,462 hl in soft drinks in 2018, while beer production increased by 9.7% to 1,886,083 hl.

In addition, investments over the reporting period amounted to 52.3 million dinars (+ 36%) and consisted mainly of new extensions in the company’s factories and the purchase of equipment.

As for the debt, it stood 125 million dinars on December 31 last against a balance of 109.8 million at the end of December 2017.

Brewery news South Korea: Alcohol consumption frequency unchanged in 2018, survey shows
According to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corp., the average frequency of drinking for mainstream consumers was 8.8 days a month in 2018, which was the same as the previous year, The Korea Bizwire reported on January 21.

The survey was conducted with the participation of 2,000 men and women between the ages of 19 and 59.

While the frequency of drinking was same as that of the previous year, the amount of alcohol consumed has steadily decreased.

Among respondents, 30.5 percent answered that they drink 1 to 4 days a month, 29.7 percent answered 5 to 8 days, and 26.7 percent answered 9 to 16 days, while 13.2 percent drank more than 17 days a month.

Consumption wise, respondents drank an average of 6.3 glasses per drinking session, compared to 6.9 glasses last year.

The average consumption of alcohol at a time is steadily decreasing, as it was 8.3 glasses in 2014, 8.2 glasses in 2015, 7.9 glasses in 2016 and 6.9 glasses in 2017.

The survey further analyzed the preferred drinks of respondents. Beer was consumed the most frequently at 40 percent, followed by soju at 31.3 percent, traditional liquor ...More info on site
