Brewery news USA: Constellation Brands beer business shows signs of slowdown
Corona-maker Constellation Brands Inc cut its 2019 profit outlook on January 9, citing weakness in wine and spirits sales and costs related to its investment in a Canadian pot producer, sending its shares down to a near two-year low, Reuters reported.

The brewer became one of the early entrants to the growing cannabis industry in 2017 when it took a stake in Canada’s largest marijuana producer Canopy Growth that now amounts to over $4 billion.

The lowered forecast reflects an about 25 cent per share pre-tax impact to full-year profit due to higher interest expenses the company expects to pay to finance the marijuana investment that was mainly backed by debt.

Weak results from Canopy Growth in November weighed on Constellation, resulting in a $164 million decrease in the fair value of its investment in the third quarter.

At the same time, Constellation has been struggling to boost sales in its wine and spirits business, anticipating a low-single digits fall in sales in fiscal 2019.

Chief Operating Officer Bill Newlands, who will take over as chief executive officer in March, blamed the low end of its wine portfolio for weakness in the business and said the company would review its portfolio and focus more on ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ME: SoMe Brewing Company eagerly awaiting opening of second location, York Beach Brewing Company
The old York Beach Post Office is getting a major facelift, enabling a father-and-son team of brewers to expand their brewing capacity and offer a new beer drinking experience at the beach. But not until the end of the government shutdown, Seacoastonline.com reported on January 9.

Dave Rowland Sr. and son David Rowland Jr. opened SoMe Brewing Company five years ago on Route 1 and both are eagerly awaiting the opening of their second brewery, York Beach Brewing Company on Route 1A. The brewery is ready to open, but Rowland Sr. said the federal government shutdown has delayed issuance of the Brewers Notice from the federal Tax and Trade Bureau.

The Rowlands have been asked for months when their new location will open, but until the Brewer’s Notice is issued, it cannot receive its state business license to open.

“When we went to open SoMe in 2013 there was a government shutdown and once again the same thing. What are the chances of this happening twice to us?” Rowland Sr. said. “We could have been open a month ago. It’s such a shame that all our paperwork is being held up with the shutdown. It’s stressful because we have a lot of debt ...More info on site

Barley news USA: American Malting Barley Association publishes list of recommended malting barley varieties for 2019
Each year, the American Malting Barley Association (AMBA) releases its list of recommended malting barley varieties to U.S. growers.

AMBA, a nonprofit trade association of 76 brewing, distilling and malting companies, is quick to note the list below is meant to inform U.S. producers which malting barley varieties the industry intends to use in the upcoming year, but the info is also good for brewers to see what’s trending. From the release:

Some varieties will be used in large quantities and others are only utilized is niche markets, so producers are encouraged to contact their local elevator, grain handler or processor to gauge market demand for any variety grown in their region prior to seeding.

There are several changes from the 2018 list. The two-row varieties Harrington and Propino are being dropped from the list and four two-row varieties are being added. These additions include ABI Growler, Bill Coors 100, Moravian 165 and Thunder. ABI Growler is a two-rowed, midseason, spring barley developed by Busch Agricultural Resources, Ft. Collins, Colo. Bill Coors 100 and Moravian 165 are two-rowed, spring varieties bred by Molson Coors in Burley, Idoha. Bill Coors 100 was released in 2016 in celebration of Bill Coors 100th birthday. Brewery news USA, MA: Channel Marker Brewing becomes the first new brewery to launch in Massachusetts in 2019
The first new brewery to open in Massachusetts in 2019 welcomed its first taproom patrons over the weekend, the Wicked Local North of Boston reported on January 9.

Channel Marker Brewing, located in Beverly’s Porter Mill building on Rantoul Street, began pouring on Saturday, Jan. 5, serving up four IPA varietals and a peanut butter porter; a sixth beer, a pale ale, was added to the lineup on Sunday, January 6.

Founded by longtime friends Tim Corcorran, Justin Negrotti and Jake Crandell, Channel Marker Brewing is the first of several taprooms expected to open in Beverly this year.

Leading up to the grand opening, Negrotti, Channel Marker’s head brewer, said social media and other outlets helped make sure community members and craft beer lovers from all over the North Shore were kept in the loop and well informed about what to expect.

“We were hoping for the best ... but yet not sure what the turnout was going to be like,” he said, explaining that a line began to form outside at around 2:30 p.m. “When we opened on Saturday, we were instantly at capacity, and had about 75 people waiting to get in.”

Overall, the first day of operation was a huge success, with ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Aslan Brewing Company planning third location
Aslan Brewing Company of Bellingham, WA just announced plans to open its third location. The new Aslan taproom is slated to open in Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood in the summer of this year, giving Seattle beer lovers easier access to a wider array of the company’s beers, the Washington Beer Blog reported on January 9.

The original brewery and pub opened in 2013. The second location, a block away in downtown Bellingham, opened just about one year ago in January of 2018. Dubbed, the Aslan Depot, the second location serves as a taproom and barrel house, where the brewery works on some of its more adventurous creations (see our recent story about that).

“We’ve been looking for a spot in Seattle for a couple years now, and couldn’t be happier finding a home in Fremont,” says Jack Lamb, CEO of Aslan Brewing Company. “Expansion can be a scary thing, but we are confident this is more a step toward quality than anything else. The more we can be in control of how our beer is being presented and showcase our passions first-hand, the better represented Aslan will be. This will ultimately improve the average beer drinker’s experience and ensure the quality beer we ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, NS: Hops farm in Nova Scotia announces opening of own brewery
A hops farm in rural Nova Scotia has announced the opening of its own brewery, The Canadian Beer News reported on January 7.

Hill Top Hops was founded in 2016 by John Peters and his family in Scotch Village, a small community in the West Hants district. After two years of supplying hops to other breweries, Peters decided to branch out into using the hops in his own beers, and has launched the Hill Top Hops Brewhouse in Newport, approximately 9 km southwest of the farm.

Currently open on a “by chance” basis while preparing for its official opening on January 19th, the taphouse and brwery currently has six beers available by the glass and for growler fills, including Avondale Cream Ale, Tidal Bore Blond, Hants County Proud Pale Ale, Cashmere Pilsner, Hop Storm IPA, and Red Tale Red Ale.

Hill Top Hops Brewhouse is located at 7232 Highway 14, adjacent to the Tidal Bore Farm Market.

Brewery news USA, NC: SouthEnd Brewing Co signs lease in Greensboro, hoping to open by summer
In the popular South End District, an empty brewery space will be empty no more this coming spring-summer. A-Z Development, a downtown Greensboro re-development company is pleased to announce that SouthEnd Brewing Co. has signed a lease at 117 West Lewis Street, Yes! Weekly reported on January 9.

Renovations will begin immediately with new brewing equipment already on order, changes to the brew room, upfit to the main taproom with a new look and décor, and the addition of a kitchen to serve a small plates menu. The outside area behind the building, which had been used as a loading dock, will be converted to a beer garden/patio with space for games, activities, and special events. Expect to see a fresh new look on the outside of the building as well.

Andy Zimmerman of A-Z Development worked with the father-and-son team of Eric and Seth Kevorkian of Greensboro to make the deal happen.

“I am so excited to announce this great addition to the South End District of downtown Greensboro,” Zimmerman said. “Both Eric and Seth are very passionate to deliver a great place to hang, eat and drink in downtown, and they really want to be a part of and contribute ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: 13 Point Brewing soft-opens to public in Lemon Grove
It’s official. Lemon Grove has its very own craft brewery care of 13 Point Brewing, which soft-opened to the public on January 3. This leaves the cities of Encinitas and Imperial Beach (each of which are home to brewery-owned tasting rooms) as the only municipalities in San Diego County without operating brewing facilities, westcoastersd.com reported on January 8.

Housed in a 3,450-square-foot former Mexican restaurant that was gutted and reimagined as a brewery with an eye toward customer comfort, 13 Point sports a 1,600-square-foot tasting room plus an additional 500 square feet of public space on an outdoor patio facing Broadway. It’s the passion project of brewing industry newbies, but that’s not to say they haven’t prepped for entrance into the local suds scene. The entire founding trio—Bob and Dylan Frank and Robert Bessone—graduated from San Diego State University’s Business of Craft Beer certificate program. And they also have the rare experience of working with municipal government to allow for operation of breweries within the limits of a city that previously forbid beer production.

13 Point possesses something else not every San Diego County brewery does—music. In fact, live performances are a big part of what the business (the name and logo ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NJ: Former contract brewer Two Ton Brewing opens own brick-and-mortar facility
For the past four years, Two Ton Brewing’s wide array of beers could be found only at festivals, restaurants and bars and liquor stores throughout the state. However, the former contract brewer now has a place to call its own — a new brick-and-mortar brewery in Kenilworth that opened in October, MyCentralJersey.com reported on January 8.

Featuring beers of every variety, including its Extra-Special Chocolate Vanilla Porter, Hammer and Ale IPA, Stay Woke Milk Stout and soon-to-come sour beers, the brewery features an industrial chic design with reclaimed elements made by the owners and local artist Brian Metros, as well as murals and installations by Pawel Wnek.

With 2,620 square feet and the ability to accommodate about 100 people, the brewery — open from Thursday through Sunday — includes an outdoor biergarten, indoor taproom and even a basement "speakeasy" themed as a library, to pay homage to the team’s background in education, which includes personal touches such as their own published books and relics from their childhood home.

Two Ton Brewing CEO Matthew Barbiere was working as a special education teacher as his brother, Jim Barbiere, who is now president and head brewer of the company, was brewing beer for fun as he ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: New Holland Brewing pushes back initial plans for spring opening
Visible signs of New Holland Brewing Co.'s impending opening have been cropping up, the Battle Creek Enquirer reported on January 10.

The brewery has a job posting out for a general manager for its Battle Creek location, for instance.

But its initial plans for a spring opening have been pushed back.

“It’s been a long process, and we’ve encountered a little bit more than we were anticipating as we started going through the building,” said Brett VanderKamp, president and founder of New Holland, at a Tuesday meeting of the Battle Creek City Commission.

While the brewery initially expected to open in Battle Creek this spring, a tax exemption application from New Holland listed June 30, 2019, as the projected completion date of the rehabilitation.

“No opening date has been set yet at this point,”said Dave White, New Holland’s vice president of retail operations. “We’re working toward a summer/fall opening. We’re hoping to kick off construction in February, March, and right now everything is just in the final stages of design and development.”

Battle Creek city commissioners unanimously approved New Holland for an obsolete property rehabilitation tax exemption on Tuesday. The brewery expects to spend $2.5 million rehabilitating the building at 64 W. Michigan Ave.

“(The abatement) will ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: 2 Tread Brewing Co. closes for good in Santa Rosa
The owner of a downtown brewpub at the Santa Rosa Plaza stopped tapping beers and closed the doors on Wednesday, January 9, citing the inability to recover from a steep drop in customers after the October 2017 wildfires as the prime reason, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat reported.

2 Tread Brewing Co. had opened on Sept. 20, 2017, at the former Fresh Choice restaurant site at the mall with a microbrewery serving pub food and an outdoor beer garden. Less than a month later, the fierce Tubbs fire severely burned northern sections of the city. That blaze and other infernos the same day disrupted lives and businesses throughout the county.

Bill Drury on January 9 said his brewery never was able to regain its footing in the local craft beer sector after the fires, blaming them for causing an immediate sharp customer drop of up to 70 percent. Overall, he and his partners poured more than $1 million into the business that at one time employed 50 people.

“The first three weeks we were opened, we were comfortably ahead of projections,” said Drury, who added that he took out another loan last year in a bid to keep the business alive. “Then the ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Major Japanese brewers aiming to win customers by promoting beerlike beverages
Four major Japanese brewers are aiming to win customers this year by promoting “third-segment” beerlike beverages, which have little or no malt content and therefore are priced lower than regular beer, The Japan News reported on January 11.

The companies are redoubling efforts to boost sales, as Japan’s consumption tax rate is set to be raised to 10 percent from 8 percent in October and the country’s beer and quasi-beer market continues shrinking partly reflecting falling demand from young consumers.

Of the four players, Sapporo Breweries Ltd. estimates sales of its beer, “happoshu” law-malt quasi-beer and third-segment beverages this year at 44.5 million cases, down 0.3 percent from 2018.

The other three project growth, with sales seen up 2.2 percent at 150.5 million cases at Asahi Breweries Ltd., 2.0 percent at 137.8 million cases at Kirin Brewery Co. and 3.0 percent at 64.6 million cases at Suntory Beer Ltd.

Each case contains the equivalent of 20 633-milliliter bottles.

Suntory does not have happoshu on its product lineup.

Kirin will revamp Hon Kirin, a blockbuster third-segment product released in March 2018, later this month.

The move comes as part of the firm’s efforts to keep the popularity of existing products through the renewals of their flavors and package ...More info on site

Brewery news Zimbabwe: AB InBev to invest $120 million Zimbabwe dividends in central bank bonds
Global brewing giant Anheuser-Busch InBev will invest more than $120 million of its dividends and fees that are trapped in Zimbabwe in the central bank’s savings bonds, its local associate said on January 10.

AB InBev owns a 40 percent stake in Zimbabwe’s largest brewer and soft drinks maker Delta Corporation, which has been struggling to repatriate dividends and import raw materials due to a severe shortage of dollars in the economy.

Delta said last week it had abandoned a plan to accept only hard currency payments to cope with the crippling shortage of U.S. dollars, after the government intervened.

“AB InBev has agreed to place more than $120 million due to them in relation to unremitted dividends and fees into RBZ (Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe) savings bonds in order to reduce the pressure on the demand of foreign currency,” Delta said.

The bonds, which were introduced in September 2017, have a coupon of 7 percent and a tenure of between 12 and 60 months.
