USA: Off-premise retail beer sales up 2.5% through December 2
|
Off-premise retail beer sales in the U.S. eclipsed $32 billion through December 2, according to market research firm IRI, Brewbound reported on December 28.
The Chicago-based group, which tracks sales at multi-outlet and convenience stores (grocery, drug, club, dollar, mass-merchandiser, and military), recently reported that dollar sales of beer were up 1.7 percent year-to-date.
However, off-premise volume sales of beer were down 0.4 percent through December 2, a trend that has plagued the beer industry for multiple years as an increasing number of consumers are drinking less and shifting toward wine and spirits.
Nevertheless, both volume and dollar sales of craft beer were up during the year-to-date period, 1.2 percent and 2.5 percent, respectively.
According to IRI, the best-selling craft beer brand in the U.S. is MillerCoors’ Blue Moon Belgian White. Off-premise volume sales for that offering were down 4.7 percent through December 2, however.
Off-premise sales of the top three U.S. craft beers – Blue Moon, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Leinenkugel’s seasonal shandy – were all in decline. Leinenkugel’s seasonal SKU suffered the worst losses, as volume sales were down more than 13 percent through December 2.

Canada: Barley crops partially affected by snow and ice at harvest time
|
60% of Alberta and 30% of Saskatchewan barley crops were affected badly by snow and ice at harvest time, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported at the beginning of December.
In Western Canada, malting varieties represented 56% of the barley plantings, but only 28% of selected barley after harvest, i.e. 2.150 mln tonnes. (These numbers were calculated on the basis of selected samples and do not represent the commercial purchases of barley, the analysts pointed out). The figures almost match Canadian malting barley consumption and reported 800,000 tonnes shipped to China.
Industries are apprehensive of germination problems later in the year, local sources said.
The Lethbridge feed barley market at the beginning of December stood at C$200.50 vs. 173,- a year ago. Nominal quotes of malting barley FOB Vancouver were around USD320,-, however, both barley acquisition and available port capacities make new export sales difficult or even unlikely.

USA, TX: Islla St. Brewing Co. to open its doors in San Antonio on January 4

Double pale ales made with freshly baked strawberry and pineapple empanadas. A brown ale made with toasted coconut, coriander and Mexican caramel. Or how about a beer made with pink pan dulce that is the first of a line of Selena-inspired suds?
These are among the creative beers from the mind of head brewer Joaquin Peña of Islla St. Brewing Co., and they will be ready for public consumption at 4 p.m. Friday, January 4. Located near the intersection of O’Connor Road and Wurzbach Parkway on San Antonio’s Northeast Side, the opening of the newly constructed brewery is the culmination of a three-year process that started in Peña’s garage and has been followed closely by the Express-News.
Islla St. will offer 10 types of beer on the tap wall, including flagships that will be regularly featured, as well as room for rotating and seasons beers. All of the beers are brewed on site.
“We want to be the peacock, with beers that you won’t find anywhere else,” Peña said.

USA, WI: Zambaldi Brewery finally breaks ground in Allouez
|
David and Abigail Malcom have been anxiously awaiting two years to break ground on their brew house.
On Saturday, December 29 their dreams finally came true. The Zambaldi Brewery will be coming to the Allouez community in summer of 2019, wbay.com reported.
David expresses his excitement as he tells us: “We cannot wait to get this tap room open so we can raise a pint with all of you here… everyone who supported us.”
David also explains that he is planning to make the brewery a ‘coffee shop’ style. He says: “We’ll have a tap room with a capacity of about 120-130 people and a big patio pretty much where we’re standing at Webster Avenue.”
Allouez Village President Jim Rafter explains that the Zambaldi Brewery is a part of the downtown Allouez project. This brewery will be a great start to the gateway of expansion in the village. He states: “As people age they want places to visit and young couples want to move into the community and have places to go and celebrate and create community.”

USA, MI: Guardian Brewing Co. to host grand opening on January 11
|
Guardian Brewing Co. will host a grand opening celebration on Friday, Jan. 11, according to owner Kim Collins, HollandSentinel.com reports.
Over the past year, big changes have come to Saugatuck’s famous Red Barn at 3657 63rd St. The historic building, once a community theater, has been converted into a restaurant, brewery and event center.
The business held a soft opening on Friday, Dec. 21, and is currently open Sunday-Thursday 11 a.m.-9 p.m. and Friday-Saturday 11 a.m.-11 p.m. The tap list currently includes ten beers. Customers can also choose from six white wines, four red wines and cocktails.
Food offerings at the restaurant include loaded nachos, stuffed piquillo peppers, salads, soups, paninis, hot dogs and chocolate chip cookies.

USA, CA: Great Change Brewing closer to launching in Bakersfield
|
The people at Great Change Brewing say they are closer to opening in Bakersfield, KGET 17 reported on December 28.
Brothers Steve and Tim Belmont report that their location at 4200 Resnick Court in Southwest Bakersfield now has its alcohol license and occupancy permit.
The brothers also say they've got a full staff.
Brewmaster Kyle Smith has been working on the craft beer and the Belmont brothers expect to announce an opening day soon.

USA, SD: Sawyer Brewing Company already open in Spearfish
|
Sawyer Brewing Company is located on Yukon Place in Spearfish and opened just over two weeks ago, Kotatv reported on January 2.
The brewery offers a wide variety of beers to suit all tastes as well as serving wood fire pizzas.
Sawyer Brewery president and owner Lee Eddy said after brewing his own beer he wanted to share it with the public and do something a little different
Eddy feels a community like Spearfish is a great location for those who enjoy a nice cold brewsky.
"And the beer scene picking up in the Black Hills all together particularly in the Northern Hills. I think Spearfish is the eclectic type of place that supports the beer scene and beer drinkers," says Lee Eddy.

USA, RI: Lops Brewing set to open in Woonsocket in May
|
Something big is brewing at 122 North Main St. in Woonsocket, or at least, it will be soon, the Valley Breeze reported on January 2.
The former tenement house and storefront across the street from Shaw’s Meats is the future home of Lops Brewing, a new brewery and taproom set to open next May. The project is the brainchild of Sean Lopolito, a Plainville, Mass. resident and avid home brewer with plans to move to North Smithfield later this year. Lopolito, who owns his own project management consulting firm, told The Breeze he began the process of opening his own brewery a couple years ago when he decided to shift his career goals toward something he was more passionate about.
“The brewing was really at the top of the list,” he explained during a tour of the future brewery space.
In 2017, Lopolito began looking for a space to host the new business. He checked out a few locations in Plainville, Wrentham and North Attleboro, but nothing stuck. USA, NC: Lower Left Brewing Co. to open this spring in Charlotte
|
Charlotte’s craft beer boom is not showing any signs of slowing, the Charlotte Observer reported on January 3.
A new brewery called Lower Left Brewing Co. will open this spring in Lower South End, a booming part of town that’s seen several new businesses move in recently, from the Brewers at 4001 Yancey to Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen.
Co-owners Tim Curtis and Alex Shoenthal signed a lease this fall on a 2,272-square-foot former mechanics garage at 4528 Nations Crossing Road, which is around the corner from GoodRoad CiderWorks and Sugar Creek Brewing Company.
In an interview this week, Curtis and Shoenthal said construction will begin this month on the building, which has four large roll-up garage doors that will lead to an outdoor patio once the project is wrapped up. Lower Left will feature a seven-barrel custom-made brewhouse, as well as a 900-square foot taproom with seating for about 50 customers.
Shoenthal describes the interior of the space as “nice and quaint, with lots of personality.
“We wanted our place to feel like home,” said Shoenthal, former head brewer at Rivermen Brewing Company in Belmont.

USA, GA: 5 Seasons Brewing to close Sandy Springs location
|
5 Seasons Brewing in Sandy Springs’ Prado won't see its twentieth year in business, What Now Atlanta reported on January 1.
Ownership decided not to renew its lease, at 5600 Roswell Rd NE #21, according to a post to the brewpub's Facebook page on January 1.
"As many of you know, tonight marks the end of our lease here at the Prado location and we will be closing our doors here in Sandy Springs at midnight," according to the social media post.
"I wanted to personally thank our dedicated staff, enormous customer support, and community that allowed us to operate here for the last 19 years. It has been our pleasure to provide millions of handcrafted beers, meals and good times to so many for so long."
5 Seasons Brewing's last day in The Prado was December 31.
The company's Westside location, at 1000 Marietta Street, remains in business.

Belgium: AB InBev to launch zero alcohol version of its Leffe beer
|
A Belgian brewer will make history in the new year when it produces the first ever non-alcoholic version of one of the country’s celebrated and powerful abbey beers, Telegraph.co.uk reported on January 1.
Belgium’s abbey beers, brewed either by monks or on licence from them, have long been praised as a central part of the country’s cultural heritage. They are notable for their complex taste, high alcohol content and bespoke glasses.
Traditionalists may call sacrilege but the brewer said that the decision was a sign of changing attitudes towards beer in Belgium, where even lagers are more alcoholic than in Britain.
Non-alcoholic lagers and wheat beers have been growing in popularity in Belgium, with a 30 percent growth in the market this year.
A recent survey found that 62 percent of Belgians thought they drank too much and the country was horrified by the recent death of a university student in a drink-fuelled initiation game.
AB InBev, the world’s largest brewing company, will begin selling a zero alcohol version of its Leffe beer in Belgium at the beginning of 2019.

Japan & South Korea: South Korea now accounts for 60% of Japanese beer exports
|
South Korea now accounts for 60 percent of Japanese beer exports every year. Most of the imports are manufactured at three factories in Fukuoka and Oita, Japan, The Korea Bizwire reported on December 31.
NHK, Japan’s national public broadcasting channel, reported on December 27 that the volume of Japanese beer exports to South Korea has increased by more than 100 times over the last 10 years.
As of 2017, 75,70 kl of Japanese beer were exported to South Korea, accounting for almost 60 percent of total beer exports in Japan.
NHK pointed out four factors that led to such a dramatic increase in beer exports to South Korea. First, the geographic proximity between the two countries helps keep the beer fresh.
The distance between Japan’s Hakata Port and South Korea’s Busan Port is more or less 200 kilometres, short enough to maintain the quality of the beer.
Koto Consumption, a Japanese expression that refers to people who purchase goods and services for the experiences that they create, as opposed to Mono Consumption, which refers to people who purchase a product to the value found in possessing it, is becoming a trend among South Korean tourists, which has also lead to an increase in beer sales.

HCMC tax authorities have failed to collect $135.73 million in taxes and fines, while brewer Sabeco has cried foul, VNExpress International reported on January 3.
The Tax Department of Ho Chi Minh City informed Vietnam’s largest brewer Sabeco on December 24 that it would withdraw VND3.1 trillion ($135.73 million) from the beer company’s bank account to collect overdue special sales tax from 2007 to 2015 and penalties for administrative violations.
However, the move failed because there was no money left in Sabeco’s Vietcombank account.
Le Duy Minh, deputy head of the department, said that his agency has temporarily blocked Sabeco’s Vietcombank account.
"We have asked Sabeco to provide details of other bank accounts but it has not fulfilled that request," he said.
But Sabeco claims that it has not violated the law.
Sabeco general director Neo Gim Siong Bennett said in a statement on December 30 that Sabeco has not violated regulations on the declaration, calculation and payment of special sales tax.
He said the enforcement action by the HCMC Tax Department was a violation of Vietnamese laws, as it was taken "without a valid administrative decision" and "contradicts with the very written guidance issued by the Ministry of Finance, General Department of Taxation and Tax Department

Thailand &Vietnam: ThaiBev announces restructuring of its loan and interest in Sabeco

UOB Kay Hian is reiterating its “buy” recommendation on Thai Beverage (ThaiBev) with a target price of 80 cents, The Edge Singapore reported on January 4.
This came on the back of the group announcing on January 3 that it will be undergoing a loan restructuring exercise, which will involve the conversion of its entire loan amount and interest in Sabeco of US$4.6 billion into share capital.
BeerCo, an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of ThaiBev, holds 49% of shares in Vietnam F&B, which in turn owns 100% of the charter capital of Vietnam Beverage, the company that holds the Sabeco shares, comprising 53.59% of all issued shares in Sabeco.
ThaiBev had granted the loan to Vietnam Beverage to finance the Sabeco acquisition.
Since the removal of foreign ownership restriction on Dec 18, the group will be viable for the Loan Conversion option. And with ThaiBev controlling a majority of the board seats in Sabeco, this loan restructuring does not come as a surprise.
Currently, the group holds about 99.4% stake in Vietnam Beverage, which has effectively increased its stake in Sabeco to 53.5% from 26.3% previously.
With this restructuring, the joint venture partners are effectively removed, providing a more transparent control of Sabeco by ThaiBev.

Zimbabwe: Delta Corp to only accept hard currency to fight dollar shortage

Delta Corp Ltd., part owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV, told Zimbabwean customers it will only accept hard currency for its beverages as local businesses struggle to cope with foreign-exchange shortages, Bloomberg reported on January 3.
The maker of Castle Lager, Chibuku sorghum beer and a range of soft drinks hasn’t been able to pay some international suppliers for “extended periods,” choking off access to further credit, the Harare-based company told retailers and wholesalers in a letter dated Jan. 2. Delta, which will implement the measure from Friday, January 4, isn’t receiving enough foreign currency from banks to pay for imports, it said.
“Our business has been adversely affected by the prevailing shortages of foreign currency,” wrote Delta, about 23 percent owned by the world’s biggest brewer. This has led to orders not being met or prolonged stock shortages, the company said.
The southern African nation’s biggest company by market value is feeling the effects of a crisis that has its roots in Zimbabwe’s decision to abandon its own currency in 2009 in favor of the dollar. UK: Asahi Breweries launches non-alcoholic beer Peroni Libera

Asahi Breweries has launched a non-alcoholic beer called Peroni Libera 0.0% in the UK, the Drinks Insight Network reported on January 2.
Produced using a customised fermentation process and yeast strain, the new alcohol-free Peroni beer offers citrusy aromas and hoppy notes that are claimed to be similar to Peroni Nastro Azzurro.
Peroni Nastro Azzurro’s master of mixology Simone Caporale said: “We’ve seen a change in consumers’ drinking habits in the industry; with the rise of mindfulness and well-being, people are more regularly considering low and no-alcohol drinks alternatives and currently there isn’t a premium, great-tasting beer out there for them to enjoy.
“Peroni Libera 0.0% is the perfect alcohol-free beer option for the lower-tempo occasions, a mid-week night out with friends, or during those working lunch occasions.
