Barley news USA: North Dakota farmers switching to two-row barley
Richard Horsley, North Dakota State University barley breeder, tells the story of a North Dakota farmer who once was asked how much two-row barley he grows. The farmer replied, "As little as possible."

But times have changed. Two-row barley — once unattractive to North Dakota farmers because it's relatively difficult to grow — will account for about 80 percent of barley acres in the state in 2019, with six-row barley the remaining 20 percent, Steven Edwardson, executive administrator of the North Dakota Barley Council, estimated.

In contrast, six-row barley — long dominant in the state — accounted for 80 percent of North Dakota barley acres in 2005 and 65 percent of state acres in 2015, AG Week reported on December 24.

But as Horsley and other participants in the barley sessions at the annual Prairie Grains Conference Dec. 8-9 in Grand Forks emphasized, strong and growing demand for two-row barley is a powerful inducement to make the switch.

If the customer is always right — and area barley growers say they accept that — then two-row barley represents both the present and the future for the area barley industry.

One important sign of that: Anheuser Busch InBev is actively looking for two-row barley contracts in ...More info on site

Hops news USA, OH: Hops production picking up in Ohio
Next month more than 75 Ohio hop growers will gather for the 2019 Ohio Hops Conference and Trade Show in Columbus. The Jan. 9 and 10 event is a sign that, as Ohio’s craft beer production has boomed in recent years, agriculture is starting to follow to meet the exploding demand for one of the key ingredients for brewing beer, the Ohio’s Country Journal and Ohio Ag Net reported on December 21.

Members of the Ohio Hops Growers Guild (OHGG) have more than 70,000 hop plants under cultivation and many craft beer brewers and drinkers put a premium on Ohio-grown ingredients. Ohio’s climate, however, does make hop production challenging.

A century ago, Ohio was home to very robust hop production to match the state’s substantial brewing industry. In subsequent years, though, Ohio’s insect and disease issues pushed the nation’s hop production to the drier climates in the Pacific Northwest. But with the recent brewery boom, many farms are again taking a look at Ohio hop production.

“Today less than 2% of the hops brewed in Ohio are grown in Ohio. The fact that we have so few Ohio hops available helps with the demand. The Ohio Craft Brewers Association and the breweries are ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Gilmer Brewing Co. opens its doors as the sole brewery in Gilmer
Gilmer Brewing Co. has opened its doors as the sole brewery in Gilmer, EastTexasMatters.com reported on December 24.

The establishment located at 101 W. Tyler St. offers a limited menu and live entertainment in addition to five craft beers.

Matt Collier, who shares ownership with his wife, Jacqueline, and Drew Emory and his wife Ruthie, said his business partners have been making beer for 10 years.

Referring to opening the brewery, Collier said, “There was just an idea we have been kicking around for a while and thought, ‘Why not give it a shot?’”

Collier said the brewery has five craft beers on tap:

Pilsner blonde stout two India pale ales

“We do have plans to bottle (them) in the future,” he said.

Gilmer Brewing also has a limited food menu of pizzas and appetizers, he said. It also features bands on Saturday nights.

At about 2,000 square feet, Gilmer Brewing has seating for about 60 people, he said.

Gilmer Brewing is open from 5 to 10 p.m. Fridays and 2 to 10 p.m. Saturdays.

Brewery news Canada, NL: Iron Rock Brewing Company Ltd. registers microbrewery project in Labrador City
Iron Rock Brewing Company Ltd. has registered a microbrewery project in Labrador City with the provincial government for a second time, The Telegram reported on December 21.

The company was proposing to establish a 120 litre brewhouse in the lower level of an existing building at 211 Drake Ave, with an annual maximum production of 85 hectolitres. That project was withdrawn in April.

According to an environmental bulletin issued by the Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment on Friday, Dec. 21, the company registered a project on Wednesday, Dec. 19 to open a microbrewery and tap room in Bruno Plaza.

The brewery will consist of an 840-litre turn-key brewhouse with three fermentation vessels and one brite beer tank. Maximum annual production of the system in year one is estimated at 79,200 litres, the bulletin states.

The company plans to sell its beer in different portion sizes in the taproom, as well as in take-away growlers. Kegs may also be distributed to local establishments in Labrador if there is enough demand.

The company’s intention is to operate the brewery year-round.

The deadline for public comments on the project is Jan. 24, with Municipal Affairs and Environment Minister Graham Letto’s decision due by Feb. 2, 2019.

Brewery news USA, KS: The Jolly Fox Brewery set to open in Pittsburg this summer
A new type of business will soon be coming to one Southeast Kansas city, FourStatesHomepage.com reported on December 27.

The Jolly Fox Brewery is set to open in Pittsburg this summer. Construction for the new attraction recently broke ground at 301 South Broadway Street. And the brewery owner is looking forward to seeing this new space come to life.

"So, I think one of our unique ideals is that we're going to be brewing a lot of beer. We've got a lot of beer to brew. We've already got a lot of distribution set up. We've also got a nice outdoor area, where you can come here and maybe throw some bocce ball or some cornhole. We'll have a nice patio. We'll have a, ya know, a relaxed vibe,” says Joel Stewart, CEO of Jolly Fox Brewery.

The brewery will specialize in Scottish, English and Irish style ales with many of them being brewed in house. Jolly Fox Brewery is a part of the city of Pittsburg's plan to develop more shops south of Fourth Street in the area.

Brewery news USA, TX: Big Bend Brewing Co. to suspend all business operations
An Alpine-based beer company that had plans to expand into San Antonio has announced that it is suspending all business operations, the San Antonio Express-News reported on December 24.

Big Bend Brewing Co. posted on social media on December 21 that as of Dec. 31, it will shut down, including taproom sales in the original Alpine facility.

The company, which recently celebrated its sixth year of business, posted the following: “Now, due to a combination of unforeseen hurdles in building our San Antonio location and the challenging macroeconomic conditions affecting investment in the craft beer sector, we find ourselves making some tough choices.”

Big Bend was in the process of building a new $3 million production facility in San Antonio at 1310 Cornerway Blvd., near the intersection of Interstate 10 and Loop 410 on the East Side.

The company makes beers with names inspired by the region where it’s brewed, such as National Park (hefeweizen), Terlingua Gold (pale ale) and La Fontera (IPA). Big Bend also brews a line of Mexican-influenced lagers that are canned under the Tejas name.

The announcement also left open the possibility of a comeback at a later date, stating: “We remain hopeful and are working hard to make the stoppage temporary.”

Brewery news USA, OH: Lock 27 Brewing releases its beers into broad distribution
Another local craft brewery is moving into retail locations in the Miami Valley, WDTN.com reported on December 21.

Lock 27 Brewing said on December 21 it has begun canning operations and is releasing its craft beers into broad distribution.

Consumers are beginning to see 4-pack and 6-pack 12-ounce cans available for carryout in both Dayton and Centerville locations and will begin to see both Mouth Breather IPA and Lock Tender Golden Ale on local store shelves beginning in January.

“This is an exciting step for us,” said Lock 27 Brewing’s Founder, Steve Barnhart. “Being able to get our most popular brand in the hands of the consumers who love them is the best gift we can give this holiday season. Seeing our craft beers on store shelves is super exciting for our entire team, and I for one couldn’t be prouder of the hard work everyone has put into getting them there.”

The brewing company will continue to package new beers in the new year. “Consumers should start seeing even more of our beers packaged in 2019,” Barnhart says. “We’ll be packaging additional year-round and seasonal releases for the broad wholesale market, in addition to a variety of small run beers sold exclusively in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Garrett's Brewing Co. to open soon in Trumansburg
A few weeks ago, Greg and Crystal Garrett took down the brown paper that hid the renovations at the former Rongovian Embassy on main street in Trumansburg, NewYorkUpstate.com reported on December 21.

They found that a small tear in the paper had, for months, served as a peep hole for those curious about the future of a space that for decades had hosted beloved and nationally-known musical acts.

"There were so many smudges," Crystal Garrett said, laughing.

By mid-December, the paper was off and the Garretts were awaiting final state approvals before opening Garrett's Brewing Co. Once they get going, they plan on making as many as 500 barrels of beer each year.

"We'll have a little bit of everything," Greg Barrett said. "We're not focused on one style."

Greg, a builder and playground installer, is the brewer in the family. It started as a hobby in 2012 with a home-brewing kit. Barrett quickly grew bored with the kits and moved onto selecting his own grains and mashes.

"It quickly became an obsession," his wife added.

That's now turned into a business. Garrett says he plans on serving as many as eight beers at the brewery at 1 W. Main St.

So far, those plans include three ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ND: Bird Dog Brewing expanding to a larger location in Mandan
A small Mandan brewery is expanding. Bird Dog Brewing has been operating out of Main Street Liquor for almost four years. But now, it's time for an upgrade, KFYR-TV reported on December 24.

Dennis Kwandt is putting in the hours to get this space ready to become a brewery. He and his business partners have been working for weeks on painting, plumbing and putting in flooring.

“It's very exciting, it’s very nerve wracking and a little nervous because now it’s all on me to get it done, or on us to get it done I should say,” Kwandt said.

Kwandt opened Bird Dog Brewing four years ago. Since then, they've been operating out of Main Street Liquor. Kwandt is making due with the 400 square feet, but says it's time for expansion. He's hoping it'll give him the opportunity to test out new beers.

“Never had the availability to really have lagers in the past, and hopefully with this space I’ll be able to do that more,” he said.

And find a third-party distributor to allow his product to get into more places. Kwandt says the new space will have a tap room, area for brewing and possibly a place for games and a stage.

Whisky news UK: Edrington-Beam Suntory UK slams cost of Brexit stockpiling
One of the UK’s biggest distributors of premium spirits has revealed it has had to significantly increase its investment in stock sourced from the European Union in anticipation of a hard Brexit, as its boss hit out at the distraction caused by political wrangling at a crucial time of the year, the Herald Scotland reported on December 24.

Glasgow-based Edrington-Beam Suntory UK, whose portfolio includes The Famous Grouse, The Macallan and Jim Beam, has been ramping up inventories of drinks such as Courvoisier Cognac from France to ensure it will have up to six months of stock in place after the UK’s scheduled departure from the EU on March 29. It is making the investment to ensure supplies to UK bars, supermarkets and restaurants are not interrupted by a no-deal Brexit.

Managing director Mark Riley declined to say how much the distributor, owned equally by Edrington and Beam Suntory, is investing in Brexit stockpiling. However he said the company usually imports the spirits it requires from the EU on a “just in time basis”, suggesting it has hiked its investment in stock significantly.

Mr Riley, who has worked in the drinks industry for 21 years, said: “The main frustrations are the whole uncertainty. ...More info on site

Brewery news Belgium: Local businessmen to resume production of Peeterman beer
Businessman Patrick Vanoppen will resume production of Peeterman beer at the Breda brewery, whose rights he has purchased from AB InBev, The Brussels Times reported on December 25.

The production of the Leuven brew had been stopped in 1974.

“With the Breda Brewery, we’ll be able to inject new life into the old Leuven beers,” said Bert Crombez, head of creation. “Thus far, we’ve been treading modestly with the Goldor pils and Blondor blond, but soon we’ll be relaunching Peeterman on the market and others will follow, like Adrianus.”

The brewery should be in operation by 2020 in a private hotel in the Leuven city centre. In the meantime, production will be delegated to the De Kroon brewery in Flemish Brabant.

A more or less bitter version of Peeterman beer could be manufactured. However, that decision will be left to the public which will be able to taste the two flavours at the end-of-year Corrida on the 30th of December. “The degree of acidity did, in fact, change the taste of the beer around World War II,” Crombez explained.

Legend has it that the Peeterman, which owes its name to the nickname given to the residents of Leuven, was the preferred beer of ...More info on site

Brewery news Spain: Mahou San Miguel invests in new distribution model for southern Spain
Spanish beer maker Mahou San Miguel has invested €2.1 million in a new distribution model for the south of Spain, FoodBev.com reported on December 21.

The firm said the project ensures both the competitiveness and long-term sustainability of its sites in Córdoba, Granada, Málaga and Jaén.
