USA: Domestic beer shipments down about 2.9% in the US
|
Shipments of domestically brewed beer are down about 2.9 percent in the US, according to the Beer Institute, but year-to-date volume sales at off-premise retailers are still basically flat, Brewbound reported on November 21.
According to the latest data from market research firm IRI, volume sales at multi-outlet and convenience stores were down 0.3 percent year-to-date through the period ending November 4.
Dwindling sales of domestic premium beers drove much of the declines, as volume sales of those products were down 5 percent during the period.
Picking up some of that lost volume were imported beers. Volume sales of imports were up 5.3 percent through November 4. Sales of craft beer, meanwhile, were up 1.1 percent, and volume sales of domestic super premium and flavored malt beverages were also both up over 11 percent during the same time frame.
According to IRI, volume sales for Anheuser-Busch, MillerCoors and Heineken are down 2.2 percent, 3.1. percent and 5.7 percent, respectively.
Meanwhile, sales of Constellation Brands offerings, which include Mexican import labels such as Corona, Modelo and Pacifico, were up 12 percent.

Canada: Damaged barley crop to hike cost of craft beer
|
Miserable weather for Canada’s barley crop means the price of a pint of craft beer is poised to rise, the Detroit News reported on November 21.
A blast of rain and snow that damaged the malting barley crop in Canada, one of the world’s top exporters, isn’t just crimping output. It’s squeezing margins for brewers that rely on malt to flavor their beer.
Barley prices surged as wet, cold weather followed a drought, damaging a big portion of the crop favored by brewers. Those woes emerged just as global stockpiles are poised to tumble to a 35-year low after dry conditions cut production from Europe to Australia, boosting costs for brewers and distillers who use the malted grain to make whiskey and other beverages.
“It impacts the price of the beer on the shelf, that’s what it boils down to,” said Brett Ireland, the chief executive officer of Bearhill Brewing, which runs four microbreweries in Alberta. “The margin gets thinner and thinner.”

USA, TN: Wiseacre Brewing Co. planning second brewery in Memphis
|
Wiseacre Brewing Co. plans to build a second, larger brewery in downtown Memphis. Abel Parcels LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Wiseacre, is seeking a Board of Adjustment variance to build on 2.5 acres at the southeast edge of Downtown. B.B. King Boulevard, East Butler and Vance avenues and Abel Street border the site, The Daily Memphian reported on November 22.
It's the second brewery in two weeks announced to be built on the more economically distressed edges of surging Downtown Memphis. Grind City Brewing Co. plans to build an $11.3 million brewery just north of Downtown, between North Second Street and the Wolf River Harbor.
Wiseacre is not vacating its 5-year-old brewery at 2783 Broad, but will convert that Binghampton site to a smaller, specialty brewhouse, the letter of intent to the Board of Adjustment states.
An investor, Kemmons Wilson Cos., provided funding for the Downtown brewery and will support “future strategic growth," according to a press release from Wiseacre.

USA, NC: UpCountry Brewing to open second location in Brevard
|
UpCountry Brewing, based in West Asheville, keeps heading further into the mountains with a second brewery and taproom space nestled into the foothills of the entrance to the Pisgah Forest in Brevard, NC, Brewbound reported on November 22.
UpCountry currently brews a variety of rotating styles for every drinker, including lagers, sours, and IPAs. This second location will give hikers, bikers, and adventure-goers a place to load up, or take a load off, as they explore the forests of western North Carolina.
“We love being part of the North Carolina outdoors,” says UpCountry’s Founder John Cochran. “In synch with our brand re-launch this year, we started looking for ways to connect with folks who love making craft beer part of their lives, either as a companion on the trail or as a celebration after a good, long day spent outside. When this opportunity manifested, it seemed like the perfect fit.”
On the back of their Simply Sour series, the UpCountry brewing team will be expanding their wood-aged and sour program at the new taproom space, giving themselves some room to run with experimental beers and special releases.

UK: Innis & Gunn to build new brewery in Edinburgh
|
One of the UK’s leading craft brewers has announced plans to build a new brewery in Edinburgh which could create up to 30 jobs, BBC reported on November 16.
Innis & Gunn said it is expanding to meet growing demand, and support its aim of achieving a turnover of £40 mln by 2021.
Its core range of craft lager, IPAs and barrel-aged beers will be produced at the new brewery, which would have a capacity of 400,000 hectolitres.
The site has not been revealed and is subject to planning permission.
Its existing brewery in Perthshire, which the firm acquired when it purchased Inveralmond Brewery in 2016, will continue to brew the Inveralmond Brewery range of cask and bottled ales as well as focusing on experimentation and limited edition barrel-aged beers.
Dougal Gunn Sharp, founder and master brewer at Innis & Gunn, told shareholders of the plans at the company's AGM in Glasgow.
He said: "Building a new brewery will cement our Edinburgh heritage as well as creating a focal point for our beers in the capital.

UK: Court asks Vijay Mallya to pay GBP88,000 to UBS Investment Bank
|
Fugitive Indian businessman Vijay Mallya on November 22 faced a major setback in his battle to save his luxurious London house from foreclosure by Swiss bank UBS after the United Kingdom (UK) High Court rejected scores of the arguments presented by his legal team during the trial of the matter, The Siasat Daily reported.
The judicature has issued an order asking Mallya to pay a hefty amount of £88,000 to UBS Investment Bank, which had issued £20.4 million in the mortgage loan for his London property.
The property was referred to in the UK High Court as a “high-class home for Dr Vijay Mallya and his family members and United Breweries Group corporate guests”.
The former liquor baron, who is on bail on an extradition warrant after his arrest in April 2017 is also facing trouble from New Delhi, after the Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi made an attempt to get him extradited from the UK on charges of money laundering to the tune fo Rs 90 billion.
