Brewery news USA, NY: Sloop Brewing Co. opens one largest craft breweries in the state of New York
Sloop Brewing Co. started in a garage in Poughkeepsie seven years ago. For the first few years, it sold all its beers at Hudson Valley-area farmers markets, NewYorkUpstate.com reported on September 19.

Later, after moving to a small production facility in Elizaville, Columbia County, it won acclaim across the state and elsewhere for its beers. Its best known is Juice Bomb, a take on the popular hazy, juicy style of India Pale Ale (IPA).

Last weekend, Sloop capitalized on that success by opening one of the largest craft breweries in the state. The new 25,000-square-foot brewery, tasting room and kitchen is housed in part of the former IBM campus in East Fishkill, southeast of Poughkeepsie in Dutchess County.

The new brewery, called The Factory, will boost Sloop's brewing capacity from 4,000 to 28,000 barrels per year, according to brewery marketing director Joe Turco. (A barrel is 31 gallons).

Sloop owners Adam Watson and Justin Taylor hope to make the new brewery, located just off Interstate 84's Exit 15, a beer-lovers destination and use it to expand their distribution across the Northeast. Much of their current distribution is in the Hudson Valley and New York City metro area, though Juice Bomb and other have occasionally ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Natterjack Brewing Co. to officially open its doors on September 22
Natterjack Brewing Co. is set to open this Saturday September 22, 2018 in at 25292 Talbot Line in West Lorne – part of Elgin County, ontariobev.net reports.

The brewery, located near the shores of Lake Erie, was founded by the Soos family – Peter, Kathy, Dan, Racheal, Elise and Danica – whom have dedicated the brewery to Matt Soos, who died in 2015.

“Some see him the as the “Beer Man,” or the man of “unique” ideas. To our family we call him Son, Brother and Uncle. Matt has given us inspiration to thrive in what is now our passion. Matthew Derek Soos (1989) was a man of all trades growing up farming and going to school in the small community of West Elgin. He started a school career, graduating from the Bio-Resource Management Honours program at the University of Guelph (2012), and then graduated from a pristine class of 30 students at Niagara College in the Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management, program (2015),” the Soos family writes.

They continue, “Matt was well known in the community of West Elgin and within the community of Craft beer, devoting the majority of his time to hops, malt, yeast, fermentation and unique ingredients. Working in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Planted Flag Brewing plans to open next summer in Medina County
Aaron Wirtz is ready to plant his own brewery flag.

Wirtz, who serves as the head brewer at the Jolly Scholar Brewing Co. in Cleveland, plans to open Planted Flag Brewing next summer in Medina County, the Akron Beacon Journal reported on September 19.

He and his wife Karen have inked a deal to build a 4,000- to 5,000-square-foot brewpub at 3594 Pearl Road in Medina Township.

“I want to make my mark on the craft beer world,” Wirtz said over a recent beer at the Lizardville Beer Store and Whiskey Bar in Copley Township.

The brewpub — there’s nothing there now and the Wirtzes are building from the ground up — will feature a 10-barrel brewing system and, as the 41-year-old Wirtz describes it, affordably priced food with a focus on local ingredients.

He’s looking at the award-winning Masthead Brewing Co. in downtown Cleveland as inspiration. The Masthead brewpub not only distributes its beer on draft, but also sells 16-ounce cans.

The Wirtzes chose Medina County not only because it’s where they live, but Wirtz also believes there’s a void in the community for the type of brewpub they are planning, with many people willing to commute to Cleveland for their brewery excursions.

“There’s a need,” ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MO: Apex Aleworks set to become Independence’s first brewery
With more than 6,000 breweries across the country, there's still one area in the Kansas City metro that has never had one. Soon, that will change.

Apex Aleworks is set to become the first brewery to open in Independence, KSHB reported on September 19.

"We probably have well over 100 recipes that we'll do," said Jeremy Parratt, owner of Apex Aleworks and Apex Brew and BBQ Supplies.

The brewery's 100-plus recipes is just one reason that Independence residents are getting excited for the opening.

"We will be the place that's close to I-70, that people coming into town or leaving town can stop in and have a beer," Parratt said.

Parratt already owned Apex Brew and BBQ Supplies. Now, he's adding Apex Aleworks to the list.

"We decided that it was time to start serving beer," Parratt said.

He knocked down a few walls to connect the businesses on Nolan Road together.

"My business started here eight years ago, so it just made sense for us to stay here," Parratt said.

Apex Aleworks will occupy a former chiropractic office. The 1,500-square-foot brewery and 49-seat taproom is expected to open in October.

Parratt said many people doubted his plans to open a brewery ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KY: Goodwood Brewing to open first brewpub outside of Louisville
Goodwood Brewing beer fans will soon have a new reason to march on Kentucky’s Capitol — a Frankfort taproom, the Courier Journal reported on September 20.

The local craft brewery plans to open its first restaurant and bar outside of Louisville by January, Goodwood Brewing Company CEO Ted Mitzlaff told the Courier Journal.

The Frankfort location will have Goodwood’s core lineup on tap and brew its own experimental and seasonal beers on site. Mitzlaff said he also hopes to partner with Frankfort’s local bourbon distilleries, the most prominent of which is Buffalo Trace.

Frankfort’s craft brewing scene is only just starting to take shape. In June, Lexington-based West Sixth Brewing opened a 120-acre farm there to showcase its brewing process. At the same time, the city eased restrictions on Sunday alcohol sales.

“There’s a real opportunity in Frankfort,” said Mitzlaff, who described the new brewpub’s view of the Kentucky River as “breathtaking.”

Once a boat repair shop, Goodwood’s newly renovated Frankfort location will feature a bar and restaurant on the ground floor, with shuffleboard, darts and cornhole in the basement, Mitzlaff said. It is a 15-minute walk from the Capitol.

The site’s proximity to Lexington, where Mitzlaff’s daughter attends the University of Kentucky, was another selling ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ID: Utara Brewing Company up and running in Standpoint
Handcrafted brews, beer cocktails and Indian cuisine are what patrons can expect when they enter the new brew pub on Pine Street, Standpoint, the Bonner County Daily Bee reported on September 21.

David Kosiba and his wife, Christina Stecher, opened Utara Brewing Company on June 23 after nearly a year of construction on the 1908 building. A brewery has been a dream of Kosiba’s for some time as, among his brewing experience, he was the head brewer at Laughing Dog Brewing from 2010-2013.

“I learned a lot out there,” Kosiba said.

Kosiba said he planned to open a brewery within 18 months of leaving Laughing Dog. While it took a little bit longer than he planned, the brewery is up and running with six employees including him and his wife. One thing he knew for sure from his previous experience was that he wanted to keep his operation small, but he does have some plans for the future.

While they kept as much of the original building structure as they could, Kosiba said the inside has been completely remodeled and rewired. The couple and their employees now serve handcrafted beer from the small-batch, seven-barrel system on site. The building, which was most recently Lightning ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: Beech Bank Brewing Co. already open in downtown Beech Grove
A new brewery with a historic name, Beech Bank Brewing Co., has opened at 301 Main St. in downtown Beech Grove, the Indianapolis Business Journal reported on September 20.

The establishment, which opened Sept. 12, occupies the building that formerly housed the Southside Times newspaper. The 3,200-square-foot space includes an eight-barrel brew house and 16 fermenter barrels, plus public and administrative space.

The brewery also plans to sell its beers wholesale.

Owners are longtime friends Dave Farris of Beech Grove and John Solmos of Lebanon, Ohio, along with Micah Wilder of Noblesville, one of Farris' former coworkers.

The current beer lineup includes five brews—including an India pale ale named Southside Python. The beer’s name references the 14-foot Burmese python that escaped from its owner this spring in Beech Grove, roaming free for several days before someone found it.

Eventually, Farris said, Beech Bank plans to offer between eight and 12 beers on tap, including a handful of permanent selections along with a rotating selection of others.

The brewery has no kitchen and does not intend to sell food, Farris said, but it does have delivery partnerships with local restaurants and plans to bring in food trucks. Patrons are also welcome to carry in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Santa Barbara Brewing Company to close and reopen under new name
The Santa Barbara Brewing Company will soon be closing and reopen as "Cruisery", the Santa Barbara Edhat reported on September 20.

The long-time State Street brewery and restaurant will be converted to the new concept by mid-October of this year.

New owner Aron Ashland, who currently owns Santa Barbara Wine Therapy, plans to bring bicycle and craft beer cultures together with a fresh menu and interior improvements, reports John Palminteri of KEYT News.

The 40 current employees will be interviewed for job openings at the new restaurant.

Barley news Russia: Barley exports in the first month of season 2018/19 lower than last year
Russia exported 638.4 thousand tonnes of barley in the first month of the new 2018/19 season, or 4.5% less than in July 2017, UkrAgroConsult reported on September 19.

As Russian wheat exports in July 2018 (3.8 mln tonnes) were almost six times as high as those of barley, it can be supposed that Russian grain exporters focused specifically on wheat at the beginning of the new season. Consequently, other grains took a back seat.

Nonetheless, it is worth noting a boost in supplies of Russian barley to its traditional and biggest buyer. So, Saudi Arabia imported 337.9 thousand tonnes of grain in the reporting month, or 39.3% more than in July 2017/18.

The second biggest importer of Russian barley – Iran – purchased 104.4 thousand tonnes in July 2018/19. During the month under review, Saudi Arabia and Iran absorbed a combined almost 70% of total barley exports from Russia.
