Brewery news USA: Craft beer production growth flattens
The heady days of the craft beer industry have given way to slower growth as small and independent brewers face stiffer competition on the retail shelf, especially from the “Big Beer” sector, the Press Democrat reported on September 6.

The news at the fourth annual California Craft Beer Summit in Sacramento on September 6 wasn’t all that bad, though. The United States should reach an all-time high of about 7,000 breweries — the vast majority of them small brewers — by year end and the craft sector is on pace for a 5 percent increase in production compared with 2017, said Bart Watson, chief economist for the Brewers Association, the trade group representing independent and craft breweries nationwide.

Yet, the mood inside the Sacramento Convention Center was more subdued than in past years for an industry that posted 18 percent annual production growth as recently as 2014. Industry officials had conceded that level of robust growth would be unsustainable over the long haul for the $26 billion-a-year U.S. craft beer sector.

The smaller growth numbers this year, however, also coincided with some high-profile setbacks, among them San Diego’s Green Flash Brewing Co. scaling back its national distribution ambition to a few Western states ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Austin Street Brewery working on second location in Portland
Work is underway on Austin Street Brewery's second location in Portland, WGME reported on September 10.

It's been busy at the brewery's Industrial Way location ever since it opened there in 2014.

"Nonstop," says co-owner and founder Will Fisher, "We have brewed as much beer as possible for over four years, as much beer as we can, we've never slowed down for over four years."

As more and more people come to try and buy their brews, space has become limited, but Fisher says their second location on Fox Street solves that problem.

"We're ready to make the move now and being able to sort of lock down a location on the peninsula in Portland, we couldn't pass up the opportunity," Fisher says.

The indoor/outdoor tasting room will be able to hold almost 100 people, which will allow them to hire more employees.

"We're going to go from 11 employees to about 20," says Fisher, "So we have a really good growth on the employment side, which is awesome."

A lot of work has been completed on the building since they announced the expansion in the spring.

"This has always been an industrial space through and through with one bathroom," says Fisher, "So we're basically having to add ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: BeerClub Brewing launched by trio of friends in Mora
Riding motorcycles across the peaks and valleys of the Alps provides an incredible thrill each year for Jon Gorham, Pat Gorham, and Fred Holm. But one of the most exciting moments of their journey waits at the end: savoring stein after stein of German beer at Oktoberfest in Munich, The Growler reported on September 7.

The friends’ love of beer extends to their life back in Minnesota. When Holm and the Gorhams began homebrewing with Dave Armstrong and Les Caswell in 2014, it made sense to combine their passion for foreign beer and focus on making European-style ales and lagers. The five recently opened BeerClub Brewing to share these traditional brews with others in their hometown of Mora, Minnesota.

Although some of the men had decades of homebrewing experience, they didn’t always plan to open a brewery. Their irregular brew days and tastings were a hobby, one that helped them produce consistently better five-gallon batches of beer, Armstrong says. “One day after brewing, we said, ‘When are we going to do beer club next?’ And that was the genesis of the name,” he explains. “It’s our own little beer club where we make beer and drink beer and drink more beer.”

Armstrong and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Redemption Rock Brewing Co. coming to Worcester later this year
Worcester's fifth brewery and second on Shrewsbury Street hopes to jump into the Central Massachusetts craft beer scene later this year, the Worcester Business Journal reported on September 7.

Redemption Rock Brewing Co. is currently building out its 6,000-square-foot space in the former Coca Cola bottling plant on the street dubbed Restaurant Row.

Co-owner Danielle Babineau and brewer Greg Carlson told WBJ Friday construction on the space in the 78-year-old building has commenced. The couple have been leasing the space since January and began demolition work shortly after.

Aside from a mural at what will be made into an indoor patio space, the space is empty.

Their business plan is about six years in the making, which started when Babineau left her career as an architect to pursue an MBA at Babson College. She graduated in 2015 with plans to open a brewery with boyfriend Carlson, a longtime brewer currently with Framingham beermaker Jack's Abby Craft Lagers.

Since then, the pair has been perfecting recipes, securing a location and obtaining financing. Now, they look to join the city's small but lively craft beer scene.

"Worcester can definitely support a lot more breweries," Babineau said.

The brewery could be the second to open in Worcester in 2018, and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: Glover Park Brewery holds official opening in Marietta
Marietta Square’s first craft beer brewing facility opened its doors to the public on Thursday, September 6, with an open house and party showcasing its event spaces and initial line of core beers. Named after the green space in the center of Marietta Square, Glover Park Brewery is located at 65 Atlanta St. at the intersection with Waverly Way, in a building that dates back to the 1930s and was formerly occupied by Marietta Lighting company, the Cobb County Courier reported on September 8.

Co-founders and long-time Marietta residents Sam Rambo and Hank DuPre want their new brewery to be a small place in the neighborhood for people to get together with friends and family to hang out, watch sports and enjoy their fresh beer brewed on site.

“We’re trying to bring that small town feel back to the city,” DuPre said. “People moved away because their entertainment was in Atlanta or elsewhere. We’re hoping to be part of a new wave of attractions in our city.”

The building came close to burning down in November of 2001 when a basement electrical short started a fire that charred the brick walls. Rambo and DuPre refurbished the building earlier this year with ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Second Enlightened Brewing Company location to open in Bay View by the end of the year
A Bay View brewery is taking steps to expand its reach in the neighborhood.

A second Enlightened Brewing Company location is slated to open inside the former Louis Allis Motors plant at 427 E. Stewart St., less than a mile away from Enlighten’s current digs at 2018 S. 1st St. Owners James Larson and Tommy Vandervort plan to have the new brewery and taproom open by the end of the year. Vandervort says they are “hoping” to begin construction sometime within the next two weeks, urbanmilwaukee.com reported on September 7.

“We’re not in a hurry,” says Vandervort. “We want to make sure everything is buttoned up [at the new facility].”

Space was one main issue that drove the company to expand. The current 3 1/2 barrel setup was intended to support the brewery longer than it did, at times limiting production.

“We maxed out a lot more quickly than we thought we would, which is great, but it hamstrings us,” he says.

In order to keep year-round beers on tap for the whole year, production has to be constant. One batch lasts about a week or two, and a back-up tank needs to be available to replace it when needed.

The expansion will give Enlightened more ...More info on site

Brewery news World: Biggest brewers facing around 16% rise in production costs - report
Beer drinkers could be forced to swallow even higher prices next year as the brewing industry is rocked by the soaring costs of ingredients, The Guardian reported on September 11.

The price of barley has risen sharply after the summer heatwave scorched harvests across Europe, but other costs, such as energy, are also rising. Even the price of the aluminium used to make beer cans rose by 8% this year, on top of a more than 20% hike in 2017.

The report from analysts at the investment bank Berenberg predicts the world’s biggest brewers, such as Heineken and Carlsberg, are facing a rise in production costs of around 16% going into 2019.

The Berenberg analyst Javier Gonzalez Lastra said barley represented an estimated 20% of total costs of goods sold for the average brewer. “Average barley prices have increased significantly in the past few months, mostly due to the heat wave in western and eastern Europe over the summer,” he said.

At the end of August, UK barley prices were up 37% year-on-year, while in France they were up 23%. The report also cites US Department of Agriculture data which puts world barley stocks at their lowest levels since 1984.

Brewery news India: Heineken may need to wait Mallya case settlement before acquiring additional stake in United Breweries
Global beer maker Heineken, which owns 44 per cent stake in United Breweries, may have to wait till the case involving Vijay Mallya is settled to acquire an additional stake in the Indian company, The Hindu BusinessLine reported on September 11.

The Enforcement Directorate has in its custody about 4 crore shares constituting 15.2 per cent and Heineken is learnt to have already approached the government agency to release those shares to the company so that it can increase its stake in United Breweries. Vijay Mallya owns 7.79 crore shares constituting 29.46 per cent stake in the company, with 3.52 crore shares pledged with lenders.

Sources in the company told BusinessLine that once the Dutch company gets over 51 per cent stake, it is likely to make several changes to the management structure. Once the current managing director’s tenure ends in another couple of years, it is likely to post a general manager to run the company’s operations in India. Most of the subsidiaries of Heineken across the globe have general managers heading the domestic operations.

It is understood that the Enforcement Directorate will need a formal mandate to either offload the shares to Heineken or sell in the open market.

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Leading breweries announce price hikes
Czechs will soon have to fork out more for the nation’s most popular alcoholic beverage. Large breweries have announces a rise in beer prices as of October and others are waiting for the price of hops and malt to stabilize before making a similar announcement, Radio Prague reported on September 11.

Plzeňský Prazdroj brewery has announced a 3.7 percent increase in the price of some of its bottled brands as of October 1st. The price of barrel and tank beer sold on tap should stay the same, as should the company’s ten-degree beers Gambrinus and Radegast which have been somewhat overshadowed by the arrival of 11 and 12 degree brands. According to the company’s spokeswoman Jitka Nemečková the hike is due to higher production costs.

The Bernard family beer company and the Primator brewery in Náchod have also announced price hikes in the coming weeks and the famous Budvar brewery has indicated a likely price increase as of next year. Some of these breweries are waiting for the price of malt, hops and other ingredients to stabilize before specifying the extent of the hike.

Brewery news Belgium: Lambic beers under threat due to climate change
Belgian beer styles are a hit with consumers around the world, but environmental scientists in Brussels claim that climate change could make the sour serve extinct, putting artisan brewers out of business, The Drinks Business reported on September 11.

Climate change scientists working on beer research site lambic.info have said that rising temperatures in Brussels and the Pajottenland region south-west of the Belgian capital — where Lambic beer is produced — could cost brewers thousands as their stocks develop bezomerd, a colloquial term for overexposure to heat, or “too much summer”.

Lambic beer is made using wild yeast and fermented in the open-air in order to react with bacteria present in the atmosphere. Many brewers rely on the natural environment to regulate temperatures, cooling their beers overnight in conditions ranging between -8 and 8C. The beers, which are brewed between October and April, are then stored in wooden barrels and must be aged below 25C.

But lambic.info’s researchers, in partnership with Belgian beer firm Cantillion, found that the window for brewing in Brussels has shortened by around 15 days since the 1990s, as climate change has forced temperatures to rise worldwide, and predicted the window could become even shorter in the years to ...More info on site

Brewery news Romania: Heineken Romania to get new general manager in October
Heineken Romania, the second-biggest beer producer on the local market, will have a new general manager starting October 1, Romania-Insider.com reported on September 11.

Onno Rombouts will leave the company’s helm after six years during which the company recorded five consecutive years with double-digit growth rates. He will be replaced by Dan Robinson, who is currently Director for Europe Export and Global Duty Free at Heineken, local Ziarul Financiar reported.

The Dutch group has four factories in Romania: in Miercurea-Ciuc, Craiova, Constanta and Targu-Mures.
