Brewery news World: Carlsberg beer cans to be stuck together to reduce plastic usage
Carlsberg beer cans are to be stuck together with glue as it becomes the first brewer to abandon plastic rings, The Telegraph reported on September 7.

The Danish firm said the move, which has been heralded as a world-first, to attach its multi-packs with adhesive will reduce the use of plastic to package products by 75 per cent.

After a three-year development process, Carlsberg insists the dots of glue bonding its new "Snap Packs" are strong enough to withstand journeys from shelves to homes, yet sufficiently brittle to break when twisted.

The eco-friendly packaging innovation will be debuted in the UK, where 30 per cent of Carlsberg's beer output is drank every year.

At an official launch event in Copenhagen, inventor Christopher Stuhlmann revealed how a trip to his local DIY store helped convince him that his brainwave could become a reality.

"The starting point was going to a hardware shop and buying all the adhesive I could get, all the glue that was there," said Mr Stuhlmann, who works for one of Carlsberg's design partners.

"Over the weekend I just glued things together and made a short video for my CEO and so the idea was born."

The technology has the support of the World Wildlife ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: MillerCoors to eliminate about 350 salaried positions across the company
MillerCoors plans to eliminate about 350 salaried positions across the company as it restructures while wrestling with slumping sales of some brands, especially Coors Light, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on September 4.

The job reductions include approximately 150 salaried positions that have been held open or eliminated earlier this year, the company said. The positions are expected to be gone by the end of October.

The company said it will offer a voluntary severance program as part of the restructuring.

“We are moving quickly and decisively to get our business back on track,” Gavin Hattersley, chief executive of MillerCoors, said on September 4 in an email to distributors. “To accomplish this, we know we need the financial flexibility to invest in our brands and solutions at the right level, quickly capitalize on new opportunities and maintain a robust marketplace presence. Our current fixed cost base limits our ability to do all this.”

MillerCoors has seven large breweries in the U.S., with the biggest campuses in Chicago, Golden, Colo., and Milwaukee.

The company has roughly 1,400 employees on the main campus in Milwaukee and about 8,000 nationwide.

MillerCoors spokesman Marty Maloney said he couldn't predict how many positions would be eliminated in Milwaukee.

“We’re offering a voluntary ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: GrainCorp lifts earnings forecast
GrainCorp is stepping up shipments of grain from Western Australia to the east coast as supplies needed in the food manufacturing industry and to feed livestock run low in drought-hit states, The Australian Financial Review reported on September 6.

The shortage means GrainCorp is sourcing grain from CBH – the farmer-controlled co-operative it targeted as part of a failed corporatisation bid in 2016 – at an ever-increasing rate.

It is understood GrainCorp plans five shipments from WA in the next few weeks – two to Brisbane, two to Newcastle and one to Port Kembla – as east coast wheat supply dries up.

This is on top of recent shipments to Brisbane and Newcastle sourced from CBH's near-monopoly storage, handling and port system in WA where growers have produced crops of 18.2 million tonnes and 14.3 million tonnes in the past two years and are on target for a record harvest this year.

Industry experts are tipping 5 million to 8 million tonnes of grain that would be exported in normal circumstances could flow from WA to the east coast to support food manufacturing and livestock production into next year.

GrainCorp bucked the trend for ASX-listed agribusinesses exposed to the impact of drought on Thursday by ...More info on site

Whisky news India: Sebi exempts Diageo from making fresh open offer to USL's shareholders
Markets regulator Sebi on September 6 exempted Diageo Group from making a fresh open offer to the shareholders of United Spirits Ltd (USL), the Economic Times reported.

It was alleged in the show cause notice issued in May last year that the status of USL had changed from being an entity jointly controlled by the UB Group and the Diageo to a solely controlled entity of Diageo Group in November, 2015.

The British spirits maker's group was allegedly required to make an open offer due to this.

The USD 75-million sweetheart deal between its erstwhile promoter Vijay Mallya and new owner Diageo was also taken into account while Sebi issued show cause notice.

In a 23-page order, Sebi Whole Time Member G Mahalingam said it is not appropriate "to direct an open offer against the noticees (Diageo Plc and Relay B V) as proposed in the SCN (show cause notice)".

Relay B V is an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of Diageo Plc.

"In my view, in a case where one of the two promoters renounces his control over the target company (USL) such that the entire control of the company vests in the hand of the lone promoter who continues, it cannot be ...More info on site
