RESIDUES OF HOP PESTICIDES IN BEER

ABSTRACT
Hops have to be treated with pesticides, otherwise a supply of sufficient quantity and quality is unrealistic. Also the development in detection methods has lead to increasingly low detection limits. Together with the Team of HVG, Barth-Haas experts looked into the transfer rates of hop pesticides from hops into beer with different hopping loads. Pesticides show a wide range from zero to good solubility in beer with transfer rates from hops to beer ranging from 10% to 82%. These levels were found in kettle hopped and dry hopped beers, meaning that there is no significant reduction of pesticides from wort to beer. The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) sets maximum residue levels (MRLs) and confirms that there is no danger for consumers.

Brewery news USA: Constellation Brands posts 6% net sales growth in Q1
Constellation Brands, the US distributor of Corona and Modelo beer, has published first-quarter net sales of $2.05 billion – 6% stronger than the same period last year.

Operating income stood at $625 million, which was an 11% improvement on last year, while gross profit rose 6% to $1.05 billion.

The company has affirmed its full-year cash flow target of approximately $2.45 billion and free cash flow projection of between $1.2 billion and $1.3 billion.

Rob Sands, chief executive of Constellation Brands, said: “Our first-quarter results are consistent with our expectations for the business and reflect planned investments in innovation for key brands, digital enablement, emerging opportunities, and operational efficiencies.”

They include Constellation’s decision to invest $190 million in Canopy Growth Corporation, a Canadian supplier of medicinal marijuana, ahead of the country’s change of law on recreational cannabis use this month; as well as the sale of its remaining interest in Accolade Wine.

“We expect these investments to yield excellent returns well into the future,” Sands said. “I am especially pleased with the successful execution and momentum of our new product introductions, including Corona Premier and Familiar, which drove industry-leading depletion growth of 9% for our beer business for the quarter.”

In Constellation’s beer portfolio, volume increased ...More info on site

Barley news Canada & USA: Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre provides update on Canada and US barley crop
The outlook for the Western Canadian barley crop varies from province to province, and while the rains have been erratic they have been sufficient to sustain the majority of the crops. Some areas are prospering while others are not. Germination is uneven, a result of seeding having been spread out this year, and hit and miss rains, the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre reported on June 27. But overall the crop is looking good for the end of June. A combination of decent rainfall through the provinces and warm temperatures has helped advance crop development. Hot temperatures were the norm this past week, with most areas posting average temperatures registering 7°C over normal June temperatures. Alberta Conditions improved over the past week with most regions in the province benefitting from some rain events. Overall the barley crop is rated at 80% (good to excellent) which is above the 5 year average of 73% at this time of year.

• South: Calgary/Lethbridge - Variable rainfall is the norm for this area, ranging from 10 to 30mm (2/5 to over 1 inch) with the higher rainfall occurring closer to Calgary. Overall the crops are looking good, but they will require some ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: AB InBev gains share for the first time since 2011 in the month to June 16
A popular ad campaign may be spurring alcohol sales, according to Morgan Stanley, CNCB reported on June 27.

The firm cited Nielsen data that revealed one-month U.S. beer sales through June 16 rose 3.3 percent year over year, improving from the results over the previous 12-week and 52-week periods.

Anheuser-Busch InBev, the owner of the Bud Light brand, was a standout, with 1.9 percent volume growth in the one-month period through June 16.

“The biggest improvement came from AB InBev, which gained share for the first time since 2011,” analyst Olivier Nicolai said in a note to clients entitled “Robust demand in June; AB Inbev outperforming; Dilly Dilly effect?” on June 26. “Both Budweiser and Bud Light posted improved momentum in June, down by just -1.4% and -2.3% in volume terms respectively. Dilly Dilly effect?”

Anheuser-Busch InBev launched its “Dilly Dilly” campaign, created by the Wieden+Kennedy ad agency, in August of last year. The ads feature fictional medieval characters toasting each other with the catchphrase. The campaign became a viral, cultural phenomenon.

Morgan Stanley has an overweight rating for Anheuser-Busch Inbev shares.

Brewery news USA, MD: Guinness to launch its Baltimore brewery on August 3
A new Guinness brewery will open in Baltimore County August 3, according to The Baltimore Sun. It will be the famous beer maker’s first U.S. brewing operation since the 1950s.

“We could have gone to a lot of other places in the country, but we chose Baltimore for a couple of different reasons,” said Tom Day, president of Diageo Beer Company, which owns Guinness.

“When you think about the history this site has and you compare it with Guinness, who’s been around for 258 years. The two of those together? A lot of magic can happen,” Day said.

The public will be able to tour the Guinness Open Gate Brewery & Barrel House, as well as attend taproom tastings and dining in its restaurant, Ryan Wagner, a brand ambassador for the beer-maker tells The Sun.

Brewery news USA, KY: Dueling Barrels Brewery & Distillery coming to Appalachia soon
A company based in Kentucky's bluegrass region is opening a $15 million brewing and distilling operation in Appalachia, the US News & World Report said on June 28.

Dueling Barrels Brewery & Distillery will produce craft beers and moonshine in Pikeville. Officials say the venture by Alltech will create 13 full-time jobs. The project included construction of a nearly 30,000-square-foot facility and the purchase of equipment, including fermenters and copper pot stills.

Alltech's late founder, Pearse Lyons, saw the distillery as a way to promote tourism in eastern Kentucky. Lyons and his wife, Deirdre, founded Alltech in 1980 to research and deliver products for the sustainable nutrition of plants, animals and people.

The family-owned company, based in Nicholasville, has seven production facilities in Kentucky employing about 700 people. Alltech has more than 100 production facilities and four bioscience centers globally.

Brewery news USA, SC: Tradesman Brewing Co. officially joining the Charleston Brewery District
Tradesman Brewing Co. is officially joining the Charleston Brewery District on the Upper Peninsula as the company completes renovation of its new brewery and taproom, the Charleston Regional Business reported on June 27.

Tradesman opened in 2014 as the first brewery on James Island, but the company quickly outgrew its space, and it closed down the James Island location in September.

The new building, located at 1647 King Street Extension, is in the Charleston Brewery District, a relatively new moniker for the area that includes Palmetto Brewing Co., Revelry Brewing Co., Cooper River Brewing Co., Fatty’s Beer Works, Edmund’s Oast Brewing Co., Munkle Brewing Co. and Lo-Fi Brewing.

The new location is about 2.5 times larger than the brewery’s James Island location, according to co-owner Chris Winn, but with the parking lot, it’s “20 times bigger.”

“Our old building had nine parking spots,” Winn said. “This new facility is on 2.5 acres,” which allows for more people to visit but also frees up indoor space by allowing Tradesman to store some grain and refrigerated finished products outdoors.

The new facility will have an indoor taproom with 24 taps, as well as a large, outdoor covered patio and an outdoor bar with seven taps.

The brewery’s original ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ND: Edwinton Brewing Company finally open in Bismark
Edwinton Brewing Company on Main Avenue in Bismarck is finally open and ready to serve cold brews to the public, KFYR-TV reported on June 28.

The brewery has 12 in house beers they're currently brewing and they're planning to expand that variety to 16.

Dale Zimmerman, the owner of Edwinton Brewing Company, says his brewery differs from any other ones in town.

"Having beer and food is obviously not a new concept, but what we did with our food and what we're doing with our beer is a totally new concept. The decor is all very unique to this building. We wanted to enhance the historical aspects of this building and make it something that all ages can come in and really enjoy some good food and beer," says Zimmerman.

Brewery news USA, OH: Findlay Brewing Company to hold ribbon cutting ceremony in early July
A small business in Findlay has officially bounced back from a devastating fire to grow even bigger, WTOL.com reported on June 29.

Two and a half years after a large fire all but destroyed an entire block on Findlay's Main Street, Findlay Brewing Company has grown from a tiny tap room into a full fledged restaurant.

It was a packed house for the micro brewery's opening day at their new location on Crawford Street.

While the old tap house favorite of samplers and growler filling is still available, patrons can now sit in the front house dining area with full kitchen service, and a beer garden.

Findlay Brewing Company owners knew from their loyal patrons that an expansion as such would work.

"Well, we've always said if we made a product that people seemed to enjoy and request, and we seem to be able to make it consistently; we thought we could probably make that next step. And we found that," said Steve Treece, co-owner of Findlay Brewing Company.

But the biggest improvement is in the brew house.

Out is the old two barrel Sabco system, and in is an enormous 15 barrel brew house with three barrel pilots.

The system is capable of eventually churning out 100 ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: North River Hops and Brewing to close down on June 30
Beer will stop flowing at a well-respected Hudson Valley brewery on June 30, wpdh.com reported on June 27.

With so many new breweries opening up in Dutchess County it's a great time to be a craft beer drinker. But sadly, one of the area's most popular breweries will be closing their doors for good at the end of the month.

Just before reaching their fourth anniversary, North River Hops and Brewing announced the closure on the Facebook page on Wednesday. According to a statement on their Facebook page the brewery will permanently close its doors.

There had been rumors that North River was looking for a new location with more room to expand, but now that is no longer a reality. In April, Cousin's Ale Works opened just a large brewery and tasting room across the street from North River on Route 9 in Wappingers Falls. It's unclear if this factored into the decision to close down.

A message to the brewery's customers, owners Brandin and Nicki Stabell explained how the decision to close wasn't an easy one.

“So much has gone into this business since its inception in 2012. We have poured our hearts and souls into its existence. We have painstakingly crafted recipe ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: King's Court Brewing Company scheduled to open in Poughkeepsie this summer
The City of Poughkeepsie's third brewery is scheduled to open this summer, wdph.com reported on June 28.

Craft beer fans in the Queen City are anxiously awaiting the opening of a new brewery within the city limits. Poughkeepsie already boasts two great breweries. Mill House Brewing company opened their doors in 2013 and have quickly become one of the most popular breweries and restaurants in Dutchess County. A year later Blue Collar Brewery opened on Cottage Street adding another great beer destination to the city.

Four years later the newest brewery in the City of Poughkeepsie is now scheduled to open. King's Court Brewing Company is currently putting the finishing touches on their new craft brewery at 40 Cannon Street.

This is some well needed good news for beer drinkers who are already mourning the loss of North River Hops and Brewing in Wappingers Falls, who announced on Wednesday that they were closing their doors for good.

Nestled inside the impressive new luxury apartment and commercial building, King's Court is named after the 1915 hotel that once sat at the same location. The brewery will have 10 rotating taps of craft beers available at all times and a food menu consisting of small plates. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AZ: Helluva Brewing Company hopes to open in Chandler by October
Shawn Shepard describes Helluva Brewing Company as a "suds and smoke"-style brewery and restaurant, ABC15 Arizona reported on June 28.

Shepard, along with his wife, Lisa, and Steve Stone, the former head brewer at Tempe-based Huss Brewing Company, are working to open a brewery and brewpub in the former Zipps Sports Grill near McClintock Drive and Ray Road in Chandler.

The 6,000-square-foot brewpub will focus on two of Shepard's passions: home brewing and his smoker.

"Not only are we going to do the traditional ribs in the smoker, but also do smoked vegetables [and] healthier aspects with the smoke style. A newer type of smoked fusion," he said.

But, he's clear that it isn't a barbecue restaurant.

There will be 20 beers on tap, including eight of Helluva's brews to start - six flagships and two seasonals. The rest will feature craft beers from other craft breweries.

There will also be three to four smoke-infused cocktails on the bar menu, he said.

Shepard said the team wanted the beer-making process to be a focal point. The 1,300-square-foot 15-barrel system will be in the back of the restaurant, but visible from all angles.

"We really wanted to have the brewery as integrated into the restaurant as much as possible. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: SKEYE Brewing closes its doors for good
SKEYE Brewing, a Longmont craft brewery, closed on June 25, according to a post on the company’s Facebook.

“Dear friends, it is with great sadness that we will be permanently closing SKEYE Brewing on Monday. We thank you all for an amazing journey over the last three years….,” the company posted on June 23.

SKEYE had a GoFundMe campaign started on June 5 seeking $10,000 to keep the brewery open. As of publication the campaign had raised $485 from eight donors.

A representative for SKEYE was reached via the company’s Facebook page and declined to comment.

Brewery news India: Debt Recovery Tribunal restricts transfer of United Spirits shares held by Vijay Mallya and United Breweries (Holdings)
The Debt Recovery Tribunal has restricted the transfer of United Spirits Ltd (USL) shares held by Vijay Mallya and United Breweries (Holdings) Ltd (UBHL), The Hindu Business Line reported on June 28.

The shares were frozen to enable recovery of R6,203.35 crore from Kingfishers Airlines Ltd and others with interest and costs from Mallya and UB (Holdings), said Diageo India, owner of USL, in a notice to the exchanges.

Mallya's 62,550 equity shares of R2 a share (pre-split — 12,510 shares of R10) and UBHL’s 88,79,410 shares of R2 each were affected by the DRT move.

Mallya, a couple of days back, reiterated that he was always willing to settle the dues to the lenders as well as to Kingfisher Airline employees.

“UBHL and myself have filed an application before the Hon’ble Karnataka High Court on June 22, 2018, setting out available assets of approximately R13,900 crore. We have requested the court’s permission to allow us to sell these assets under judicial supervision and repay creditors...,” Mallya said.
