WILD HOPS IN ITALY
ABSTRACT
Wild hops can be found almost everywhere - including
Italy. Maybe some wild hops found in Umbria, Italy can
help in future breeding to create new hop varieties. For
this reason a group of Italian researchers have an inventory
of the germplasm for a number of different wild hops.

USA, IN: Mind Over Mash Brewing Company already open in Brownsburg
|
Brownsburg is no longer a dry town when it comes brewing craft beers, WRTV Indianapolis reported on May 11.
Mind Over Mash Brewing Company officially opened Saturday May 5, the first taproom to actually brew its beer within Brownbsurg’s city limits.
“Indiana is a great place to open breweries, central Indiana has shown a lot of acceptance of craft beer,” said Michael Huffman, co-owner of Mind Over Mash Brewing Company. “When looking for a location, we noticed Hendricks County is a little deficient in that area of craft beer and we saw a lot of growth potential in Brownsburg.”
The brains behind the brewery, two engineers, Michael Huffman, a software engineer, and Bobby Klene, an electrical engineer. The two became friends several years ago through similar interests: a taste for Indy’s “foodie” scene and the love of craft beer.
“It’s always been Bobby’s dream to open a brewery, and a long desire of mine has been to open a restaurant,” says Huffman. “Our plan is to open a taproom restaurant within the next year.”
For now, the brewery is pairing with local food trucks to have food available for guests of the new beer taproom location.

USA, OR: Von Ebert Brewing to open second location in Portland
|
Von Ebert Brewing, the sort-of new brewery from the guy behind Portland’s Fat Head’s, is already going to open a second location on the east side, the Eater Portland reported on May 11.
After closing the Ohio-based brewery’s local outpost, the Pearl District brewpub transformed into a new, independent brewery this March with The Commons star brewer Sean Burke at the helm. Now, owner Tom S. Cook is moving onto the Glendoveer Golf Course, “on the 10th hole,” the press release reads — locals may remember it as the former location of the Ringside Grill. The opening is not quite set in stone yet, but it should open early this summer with separate brewing operations beginning in September.
The new brewery, located at 14021 NE Glisan Street, appears to be a tad more experimental than the Pearl — the east location will have a mixed-culture and sour setup for German lagers, saisons, and Belgian-style beers. The whole shebang will seat 250 in a dining room, at a full-service bar, and on two patios in the lodge-style brewpub.

USA, CT: Charter Oak Brewing Co. to finally get a home of its own
|
Scott Vallely started Charter Oak Brewing Co. in 2011 and has built a successful brand whose IPAs, ales and other beer varieties can be found in about 400 establishments throughout Connecticut.
Despite its success, Charter Oak has never had a home to call its own — until now, the Danbury News Times reported.
Brewing operations are up and running at its new Danbury building with a five-barrel system and a 20-barrel system both producing the fresh, hand-crafted beers for which the brand has become known.
The taproom has received local and federal approvals and will open in about two weeks, pending state approvals. Vallely said he hopes to be open by Memorial Day.
“In the past, we were a gypsy brewery; brewing wherever they had the time, space and patience,” Vallely said. “We had to bring all of our equipment and rent the barrels, but we’ve always done our own brewing.”
On May 9, the canning line was installed and by May 10 a batch of 1687 Brown Ale with new labeling was being packaged. On May 11, cans of Wadsworth’s India Pale Ale rolled off the line.
Vallely beamed when asked if having his own location makes the brewing and packaging process easier.

USA, CA: AB InBev’s Golden Road Brewery open in Midtown, Sacramento

It's hard to miss the new Golden Road Brewery in Midtown, Sacramento.
The large brewery, which started in Los Angeles and was bought by Anheuser-Busch in 2015, is entirely outdoors on 19th and L Streets and is made out of five, re-purposed shipping containers painted turquoise, ABC10.com reported on May 10.
While it was visibly packed during the opening night on May 9, a controversy over its arrival is already, well, brewing among local brewers.
Claimstake Brewing in Rancho Cordova posted a statement on their Facebook page suggesting Golden Road Brewery makes "faux 'craft' beer" that has "infiltrated the neighborhood."
"Anheuser-Busch InBev, owners of Budweiser and other 'Big Beer' brands, is the antithesis of local slow, craft and independent," the statement said.
Tom McCormick with the California Craft Brewers Association accused Golden Road of not being transparent about their parent company, saying "Golden Road Brewing is Anheuser-Busch InBev."
J-E Paino, who owns Ruhstaller Brewery in Dixon and is currently opening up a tasting room downtown, said he had a chance to rent the same, prime space Golden Road did but the rent was just too high.

Brewmaster Jason Ledford describes Suisun City’s newest brewery as “a cool space where you can come in and enjoy yourself”, the Fairfield Daily Republic reported on May 11
The Bay Area Rapid Transit police sergeant and Suisun City native proudly points out that True Symmetry Brewing Company is a dream come true to both do what he loves and share his brewing with his neighbors.
“This is my hometown,” Ledford said.
He grew up within sight of True Symmetry’s location in the southeast corner of the Marina Shopping Center.
The brewery itself has been a year in construction with work setting up vats, building the taproom and preparing all the beers for a late March family-and-friends soft opening.
Suisun City’s second brewery opened to the general public in April. Ledford is partnering with his wife, Chasity Ledford, and friend and firefighter Jessie Reinosa.
Ledford’s family, such as dad Geary Ledford and brother Scott Ledford, also pitched in with work that included building the signature bar.
Ledford calls location a great fit and said the city’s water supply is good “and that’s a big plus.”

Berks County's newest brewery soon will be open, The Reading Eagle reported on May 10.
1787 Brewing Co., which is located in the former Miller's 5 & 10 store at 43 S. Fourth St., Hamburg, will open for business next week. Co-owners Steve Macbeth and Jim Gerner plan to have a soft opening May 17.
The brewpub's name comes from the year Hamburg was founded, said Macbeth, a real-estate investor who owns several properties in Hamburg.
Macbeth said he's both excited and nervous to open the doors.
"I'm nervous about delivering on what everybody's expectations are," he said. "I don't want to let anybody down. We're trying to do it right and first class."
1787 will have seating for about 100 people, including about 25 at an L-shaped bar just inside the front door. There is also a small bar in the back that will be used for overflow seating as well as for private events. There are pocket doors that can be closed to separate the front and back so the back can be used for special events and private functions.

Central New York’s newest brewery and eatery started construction last week, with plans to open by August, the Eagle News Online reports.
Heritage Hill Brewhouse and Kitchen, owned by Dan Palladino and located at Palladino Farm in Pompey, will brew its beers and serve food from ingredients grown onsite or sourced almost entirely from family-owned neighboring farms.
With brewmaster Jim Frazee, a Pompey native, making the beer and chef Alicyn Hart, former owner and operator of Circa in Cazenovia, in the kitchen, Palladino plans to continue the local, community focused agricultural business with Heritage Hills that has sustained his family farm and farm store for years.
“We’re really excited to be a true farm restaurant,” Palladino said during the groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, May 4.
Palladino was joined at the event by numerous state and local officials, including Deputy Commissioner of New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Jackie Moody-Czub, Onondaga County Supervisor Joanne Mahoney, Onondaga County Legislator Dave Knapp, State Assemblyman Al Stirpe and Pompey Town Supervisor Carol Marsh.

USA, OR: Hubbleton Brewing Company prospering in Portland

A hobby that started in a basement, then to a front yard, has now turned into a full-time business for Dan Schey, owner of Hubbleton Brewing Company, hngnews.com reported on May 10.
Schey began brewing beer in the basement of his home in Waterloo in 1990.
In 1999, he purchased 40 acres of land along Hubbleton Road in the Town of Portland and built a house. With the extra land in front of his home, he began to think about what he could grow. In 2009, he planted his first hops crop in three acres of a former cow pasture. It is known as Arrowhead Hops where eight different varieties of hops are grown.
One acre can produce between 500 and 1,500 pounds of hops. They are dried, crushed into pellets and frozen in nitrogen-sealed bags for future use.
When the hops business took off, Schey helped form the Wisconsin Hops Exchange, a farming cooperative. It started with 11 hops growers and has now increased to 65 farmers. USA, TX: Twin Sisters’ Cantina brewery to fully open later this summer

San Antonio, get ready to quaff a graf.
That’s the beverage you’ll find on tap when Twin Sisters’ Cantina fully opens later this summer. The term refers to a malt beverage with an identity crisis. It’s apple-based like a cider, but contains enough malted barley and wheat to feel like a proper pint with some sweetness and a frothy head, mySanAntonio.com reported on May 10.
And most importantly, it complies with Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission regulations for brewing beer, an easier hurdle to clear than the rules for traditional cider allow.
David Martinez and Israel Castro have partnered in the new venture. The former is an Army veteran with an extensive metal fabrication background. The latter served in the Navy, and has spent 11 years in the brewing industry.
The two have built their pub and two-barrel brewing system from hand out of reclaimed materials.
Expect to find some playful refreshments on tap. The Miley Cyder “gets people twerking,” Martinez promised. The S.A. Tea swaps hops for tea leaves to create a porch-friendly sipper dialed in to the Southern palate. Castro said he’s experimenting with a wide range of Texas products, including bluebonnets, which he suggested could be used to make a blue-tinted brew.

USA, IL: 93 Octane Brewing expected to open by year’s end

A new nanobrewery specializing in craft beer soon will join a restaurant and liquor store operating under the same roof - and the same liquor license - in St. Charles, the Chicago Daily Herald reported on May 11.
93 Octane Brewing is expected to open by year's end in a vacant space at 1825 Lincoln Hwy., which also is occupied by The Pride Beer and Wine plus Spirits and Urban Counter, a fast-casual American restaurant. Suburban company The Pride Stores Inc., oversees all three operations, in addition to an adjacent gas station and convenience store.
93 Octane is a new concept for The Pride Stores, which initially intended to open an Italian deli in the building's third tenant space, marketing manager Chris Peckat said. When those plans fell through, he started exploring a new business model that would allow the company to create its own brand of beer and distribute the product to other Pride locations.
"I think it fits together really well," said Peckat, who has years of prior experience in the alcohol industry. "This really is just a great addition to the whole building."

USA, OR: Mt. Angel Brewing Company to close this month
|
There are a few bags of ingredients and empty bottles left in the Mt. Angel Brewing Company's production facility, but most of the remaining product is in the barrels.
Once owner Larry Oien, 72, fills his remaining orders this month, he will close the business he has owned since 2005 to focus on his recovery from cancer and spend more time with his grandchildren, the Statesman Journal reported on May 12.
“It was a very emotional decision to wind this down,” Oien said.
He said he will attempt to sell the brewing business.
Oien has been winding it down – he stopped bottling a year ago and has only been selling kegs – since being diagnosed with prostate cancer, but wanted to continue the operation even as his life grew more complicated.
He said he could continue the business indefinitely while he courted a potential buyer, but he felt it was best to make a quick exit from the business.
“It doesn’t feel sudden to me, but you’ve got to do it that way to get it done,” Oien said. “Move on. The longer you stretch it out, the more doubt you may have. Nope, you’re done, finished.”

USA, CA: Hoppy Brewing Company readying two new locations in Sacramento
|
There will be a whole lot of Hoppy happening this summer as the team from Hoppy Brewing Company readies not one, but two new locations, the Sactown Magazine reported on May 15.
Hoppy’s Railyard Kitchen & Hopgarden, a new community brewpub, will open in Old Sacramento, while a brewery and tasting room will open just off Broadway.
The restaurant will take over the spaces that formerly housed Ten22 and District restaurants on 2nd Street, both of which closed on March 2.
The original Hoppy Brewing Company vacated its longtime home on Folsom Blvd in February, and will occupy the new 9,000-square-foot location that is owned by the Harvego Restaurant Group (which also owns the Firehouse Restaurant in Old Sacramento). The back patio will be converted into a “hopgarden,” and the space formerly occupied by District will be used for take out orders.
“With the new DoCo completion nearby, I see a lot of potential in Old Sacramento,” says founder Troy Paski. “I just think that there’s a lot going on and a lot of opportunities for us there.”
Paski tapped Kent Souza, former executive chef of Kupros Craft House and Roxy Restaurant & Bar, to lead Hoppy’s new kitchen.

Australia: GrainCorp warns about challenging weather conditions in Australia’s east
|
Crop handler GrainCorp Ltd. has warned about challenging conditions in Australia’s east as grain farmers across the nation wait for rain, with most winter crops planted in dry soil, Bloomberg reported on May 11.
“We are still quite a way from having any predictable levels of what the crop size would be,” for the upcoming season, GrainCorp’s Chief Executive Officer Mark Palmquist said on a call with media and analysts on May 11. “It really does depend on what moisture profile we get over the next month.”
Parts of Victoria and New South Wales had the driest April on record while southern Australia as a whole had its third-lowest amount of rainfall for the month, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. Southwest Australia and parts of western Victoria have an increased chance of a drier than average May to July, it said.
“It may be a dry start to the season, however it is still early days,” Rabobank International said in a report released on Friday. “Substantial season opening rains in mid-through to late May would put the season mostly back on track.”

China: Corona becomes China’s No 1 imported beer brand
|
Mexican beer brand Corona, which is owned by Grupo Modelo, is taking on the international market since its beer brand has become the number one import in China, the Mexico News Today reported on May 15.
Carlos Brito, CEO of AB InBev, parent company of Grupo Modelo says, “The brand continues to grow rapidly in the super premium segment in China where it recently became the number one imported beer brand.”
The brand had a 25.1 percent growth in revenues within Mexico, while outside the country it has seen a 40.3 percent increase.
“The opportunity we see with Corona is that it has a market share of 3 percent or more in only three countries where we have the brand. Chile, Australia and Mexico.
“With the brand that continues to grow at double digits throughout the world, we are still far from reaching its maximum potential,” added Brito.
During the first quarter of 2018, beer volumes increased by 0.5 percent mainly due to the performance in Mexico, Colombia and Argentina, which was counteracted by the US and Brazilian markets.
Revenues increased around 4.7 percent in that quarter, mainly due to the premium category, according to the company’s financial report.

Indonesia & South Korea: Indonesia’s PT Multi Bintang starts exports of its flagship beer to South Korea
|
Indonesian alcoholic beverage producer PT Multi Bintang Indonesia has officially exported its most renowned beer Bintang to South Korea, Tempo.co reported on May 15.
Multi Bintang Indonesia President Director Michael Chin revealed that the company has prioritized the South Korean market this year in hope of having its brand accepted by the Korean society despite not specifically mentioning the company's export target and volume.
“We believe that the demand can grow in South Korea, however, we cannot reveal the export value since it is a sensitive subject,” said Michael at the company’s factory in Tangerang, Banten, on May 14.
Furthermore, Multi Bintang Indonesia has started to export its product after it was able to meet the quality standards requested by the South Korean importer. This deal was made possible thanks to the partnership between Multi Bintang and South Korean Heineken.
However, the export volume is still in its early stage which represents 5 percent of the company’s total production that adds up to 2 million hectolitres or 200 million litres.
Other than South Korea, Bintang was also exported to several other countries in 2017 such as Japan, Singapore, Timor Leste, Australia, the Netherlands, and England.

South Africa: Budweiser beer is now brewed in South Africa
|
Budweiser, one of the world’s most iconic beers, is now being brewed in South Africa at SAB’s Rosslyn Brewery, outside of Pretoria, the Media Update reported on May 14.
"We are tremendously excited that South Africans are now able to enjoy this beer. India: Regulator Sebi closes proceedings against 3 companies of Vijay Mallya’s

Indian regulator Sebi has closed its adjudication proceedings against three group firms of defaulter businessman Vijay Mallya for alleged disclosure lapses in a 17-year-old case citing liquidation of a holding company, but did not rule out any penal action at a later date, Livemint reported on May 16.
Sebi said it had observed certain non-compliances by three UB group companies while examining the letter of offer made by Zuari Fertilizers and Chemicals Ltd, along with other entities including United Breweries (Holdings) Ltd, Kingfisher Finvest India Ltd and McDowell Holdings Ltd to acquire shares of Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers Ltd (MCFL).
MCFL had seen a fierce takeover battle in 2015 between Pune-based Deepak Fertilisers and Kolkata-based Zuari group which had support of Mallya-led promoters. However, the present case relates to a transaction in January 2001 when promoter—United Breweries (Holding) Ltd—had acquired 2 crore shares representing 16.88% of MCFL pursuant to the allotment made under the Board of Industrial and Financial Reconstruction Rehabilitation Scheme.
The acquisition was exempted from open offer obligations, but no disclosure was made by the UB group firms, all of whom were promoters and UB Group firms at that time, as required under Sebi’s takeover regulations.
