China: Wholesale beer prices continuing to rise
|
Wholesale prices of beer are continuing to rise in China as producers move to compensate for rising costs and pay for industrial upgrading, the Global Times reported on March 12.
Lin Changming, a beer dealer based in Hangzhou, capital of East China's Zhejiang Province, said that he's seen the wholesale price of Snow Beer, a Beijing-headquartered brand, go up by 3 yuan (47 cents) to "dozens of yuan" per 12-bottle case since the beginning of the year.
Other beers, like US brand Budweiser, are joining in.
"Budweiser has many different beer types but their prices generally surged after the Spring Festival, some more, some less," Lin told the Global Times on March 12. Industry website jiuyejia.com reported on March 11 that wholesale prices for some types of Budweiser surged to about 85 yuan per case after the Spring Festival from 57 yuan before the holidays.
AB InBev, maker of Budweiser, didn't reply to an interview request as of press time on March 12.
According to jiuyejia.com, other brands like Tsingtao Beer and Yanjing Beer had raised prices even before Budweiser's move.

USA: Brewers Association releases top US brewers 2017 list
|
The Brewers Association (BA) — the not-for-profit trade group representing small and independent craft brewers — released on March 14 its annual lists of the top 50 producing craft brewing companies and overall brewing companies in the U.S., based on beer sales volume. Of the top 50 overall brewing companies, 40 were small and independent craft brewing companies.
“In an increasingly competitive and mature marketplace, these brewing companies continue to lead and pave the path for small and independent craft brewers,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association.
According to the trade group, the 2017 top 5 US craft brewing companies are:

USA: Bland beer is still the king despite quick rise of popularity of craft beers
|
Although craft beer has experienced explosive market growth over the past 25 years, the vast majority of Americans still don't drink it.
Only about 1 in 8 beers sold in America is a craft beer. For the first time, the three best-selling beers in America are light beers: Bud Light, Coors Light and Miller Lite. Bud Light alone has a greater market share than all craft beers combined, MENAFN.COM reported on March 13.
So while the selection has broadened dramatically, most people's tastes have not. Even craft beer companies are adjusting to this reality: A recent Chicago Tribune article noted that craft breweries are releasing beers that are 'less hoppy and in-your-face' in order to appeal to the majority of Americans who prefer 'big corporate lagers.'
In other words, they're brewing blander beers.
How did Americans come to prefer such bland beer? The unique history of the U.S. temperance movement might bear some responsibility for country's exceptionally bland beer.
Unlike European countries with beer preferences and styles that have evolved over centuries, America lacks a homegrown brewing tradition.

UK: Carlsberg launches re-creation of original 19th century dark lager in the on-trade until June
|
A re-creation of Carlsberg’s original dark lager from the late 19th century has been launched exclusively in the UK on-trade until June, the Bar Magazine reported on March 13.
Carlsberg 1883 uses the brewer’s original 134-year old yeast, Saccharomyces Carlsbergensis, which was first isolated and identified by Dr Emil Christian Hansen at the Carlsberg Laboratory in Copenhagen.
The strain is still used in fermentation in brewing all around the world but the new beer was developed through the Carlsberg Rebrew project using pure yeast found in a bottle from 1883.
Celebrating this innovation, the new Danish-style dark lager is full-bodied and rich in malt and caramel, with ABV of 4.6%. Brewed in Denmark, it has a fresh aroma of malt and caramel and a sweet-biscuit body followed by a well-balance aftertaste.

Nigeria: Nigeria increases excise duties on tobacco and alcohol
|
Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has approved an increase in excise duties on tobacco and alcoholic beverages, the finance ministry said in a statement on March 11, Reuters reported.
The West African country, which has Africa’s biggest economy, fell into recession in 2016 largely due to low oil prices. It emerged from recession last year, mainly as a result of higher crude prices, and is trying to raise non-oil revenues.
In addition to a 20 percent tax on tobacco, the government will add an extra fixed tax per cigarette. A percentage tax on alcoholic beverages will be replaced by taxes of fixed amounts based on volume.
The finance ministry said the changes will take effect from June 4 this year.
The move would have “a dual benefit of raising the government’s fiscal revenues and reducing the health hazards associated with tobacco-related diseases and alcohol abuse,” it said in its statement.
The ministry said the new regime was in line with a directive from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) regional bloc on the harmonisation of member-states’ legislation on excise duties.
Raising duties in Nigeria for alcohol could further hit consumer demand amid fragile growth.

India & UK: Indian craft brewer White Rhino set to take its beer to the UK
|
About 18 months after Ishaan Puri founded White Rhino Brewing Co., the New Delhi-based company is set to take its craft beer White Rhino to the UK—one of world’s most mature beer markets, Livemint reported on March 13.
“UK is a mature market for good quality craft beers. We have undergone a massive market study, testing before deciding to enter the UK market. We will have limited presence across selected pubs in London, Manchester and Leeds,” said Puri, founder and director, White Rhino Brewing Co.
Although promotion and advertising of alcoholic beverages is permitted in the UK, Puri said he would primarily bank on word-of-mouth—a strategy that worked in favour for the brand in India—to crack the UK market. The UK market offers around 11,000 beer choices including one-off specials and seasonal beers, and houses more than 53,000 pubs of which more than 37,000 sells ale variant of beer.

USA: MillerCoors needs exemptions from tariffs on aluminium in order to not rise prices or lose jobs
|
MillerCoors has released a new statement now that President Trump has signed an order enforcing tariffs on aluminum and steel. The tariffs signed on March 8 would be 10 percent on aluminum and 25 percent on steel. The President expects the tariffs to go into effect in 15 days, The WDJT reported.
Wisconsin Governor Walker said that some Wisconsin companies could get exemptions from the tariffs. MillerCoors says it needs one of those exemptions in order to not rise prices or lose jobs.
In their statement, MillerCoors said, "Without the exclusion, this tariff flies in the face of the administration's commitment to growing our economy as it will mean higher prices for consumers and, likely, the loss of jobs."
