Brewery news USA: Beer industry’s first round of consolidation is largely over - analysts
The beer industry’s first round of consolidation is largely over as macro US brewers have slowed their pace of craft brewery acquisitions, making way for other types of deals that offer small brewers new paths forward, says Rabobank.

While craft beer brands are still registering consistent steady growth of roughly 5%-6%, the years of double-digit gains appear to be over and competing on price will become an important “strategic lever,” Rabobank senior beverages analyst, Jim Watson, says.

“Price competition in craft still isn’t as explicit, but it’s definitely increased,” Watson told BeverageDaily, adding that new, smaller craft beer brands are using price as one of their major selling points to crack into the market.

“We believe craft brewers need partners in order to survive in this new market.”

Recent deals including minority stake investments, cross-country craft alliances, and private equity deals are positioning small brewers for future growth while keeping their craft credibility intact, according to Rabobank.

“The competing forces of local vs. scale are seemingly at odds, but breweries are finding many ways around the contradiction,” Watson continues.

Deals such as Spanish brewer Mahou San Miguel’s 30% stake in Avery Brewing Co. and Founders Brewery Co. help support ...More info on site

Brewery news Nigeria: Things happening fast in Nigeria’s beer market
With a market share of 9%, Nigeria’s beer market has been rated one of the 10 fastest growing beer markets in the world. Raheem Akingbolu in a report by Thisday Newspapers on February 1 looks at the competition in the market and emerging trends.

Like in the game of football, where players make frantic efforts to score goals, things are happening fast in the Nigerian beer market. Until recently, the duel was well pronounced between Nigerian Breweries Plc and Guinness Nigeria. But since 2011, when SABMiller, one of the world’s top brewers, acquired majority share in the International Breweries Ilesa, manufacturers of Trophy Larger and also took control of the ownership of Hero, a popular brand in the Eastern market, the game has changed.

Within three years of the acquisition, top strikers in the nation’s beer market were not only tackled by Trophy and Hero, the two brands assumed good positions among the low to middle class consumers, the largest segment of beer consumers in the country. A development, which sent handlers of the existing market leaders back to drawing board for strategies that could help them control their slowing market share. To this end, industry watchers have consistently argued that the ...More info on site

BarleyBarley News Barley

Barley news EU: It is very wet in Western Europe but there still is time until barley sowing
It is still very wet in Western Europe and the fields are quite under water. Of course there is still plenty of time for spring sowings, but for the moment it is just not possible, GrainCom analysts said in their last newsletter on February 2.

In France planting delays are likely. Farmers will not be much interested to sell their spring crops before plantings. There was some buying activity left and right in the last days. Potentially it might be difficult to get support from first hand sellers for the next round of buying, the analysts said.

EU feed barley prices are well supported in France and Germany due to ongoing buying interest and thin supply on the offer side. Although prices have slightly eased following the decrease in Euronext wheat, the premiums for feed barley remain strong.
