LATER HARVEST - MORE GRAPEFRUIT
ABSTRACT
This is one of the outcomes of this Japanese research
team looking into the influence of harvest date of hops.
Specifically they looked into the varieties Cascade, Furano
Beauty and Furano Magical; the latter two are Japanese
bred varieties from Sapporo. Harvesting these varieties in a
time window from 45 to 85 days after flowering, they found
that the alpha content is realtively stable as is the content
of 4MMP (black currant to catty), but the level of 3M4MP
(3-mercapto-4 methylpentan-1-ol) that gives a grapefruit
flavour rises significantly with a later harvest date. Also,
the oil content in general increases with a later harvest. For
Furano Beauty, later harvest leads to a more fruity, citrus and
floral aroma in the trial beer where, as in Furano Magical, the
flavour was just a different balance of sensory perceptions.
If this can be confirmed for other varieties, we have a good
indication how to increase grapefruit flavours in beer!

Zimbabwe & Zambia: Delta Corp to buy controlling stake in AB InBev’s National Breweries
|
Delta Corp Ltd., Zimbabwe’s biggest company by market value, agreed to buy a controlling stake in a Zambian sorghum-beer maker in the brewer’s first foray outside its home market, Bloomberg reported on October 13.
The purchase of National Breweries Plc will increase the Harare-based company’s exposure to the plant-based alcoholic drink, Delta said in a statement on October 13. The shares will be bought from Heinrich’s Syndicate Ltd., which is also a unit of the world’s largest brewer, Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV.
“This investment opportunity fits well with the company’s multi-beverage strategy,” Delta said, without putting a value on the transaction.
The expansion into neighbouring Zambia will help Delta battle weak economic growth and a cash crunch in its home market, although on Wednesday the company reported a pickup in lager sales due to improved disposable incomes. The brewer reports official half-year results on Nov 9.
Delta said in a trading statement this week its second-quarter revenue rose 1 percent and for the first half of the year it was up 2 percent.

Zimbabwe: Delta Corporation’s lager volumes continue to show recovery
|
Delta Corporation lager volumes continued to show recovery for the second consecutive quarter spurred largely by improved disposable incomes in the agriculture and small scale mining sectors, The Herald reported on October 12.
In a trading update for the September quarter, Delta said lager beer volumes jumped 11 percent for the quarter and half year to September 2017, driven by value packs and brands benefiting from improved income from mining and agriculture. However, performance in the period under review was characterised by mixed results across segments, impacted by transaction challenges largely dominated by electronic payments in the wake of worsening cash shortages in the country.
“Lager beer volume grew 11 percent above prior year for both the quarter and the six months with a mix in favour of value packs and brands benefiting from improved disposable incomes driven by agriculture and small scale mining,” company secretary Alex Makamure said in the update.
In the first quarter to June 30, lager volumes rose 12 percent. Sparkling beverages volume declined by 1 percent for the quarter and closed flat on prior year for the six months, while Maheu volumes went up 12 percent and 19 percent for the quarter and six months, respectively.

Australia: Coca-Cola Amatil buys craft brewer Feral Brewing Company in Perth
|
Coca-Cola Amatil, chief bottler and distributor of Coca-Cola beverages across Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific, has just acquired Perth’s Feral Brewing Company, Business Review Australia reported on October 12.
Amatil is no stranger to selling beer, distributing numerous well-known brands including Coors, Samuel Adams and Blue Moon. Operating 34 production facilities in the region, it is a top 50 Australian company and is 29.4%-owned by Coca-Cola itself.
Feral Brewing Company has been in operation since 2002, making it a well-established player in the craft industry. The fee paid by Amatil is yet to be disclosed.
Feral’s Founder Brendan Varis said the decision to sell, while being a difficult one, would allow the business to execute its bold growth ambitions far quicker with the financial and infrastructural backing being offered.
Data from 2016 shows that craft beer is the only continuously growing segment in the Australian beer industry, with overall volumes consumed actually falling. The study carried out by Beer Cartel revealed that Feral was voted the country’s best craft brewer, with pale ale the most consumed craft beer style.

Taiwan: Taiwan’s Golden Age of craft brewing has just begun

Most people in the world probably don't think of Taiwan when it comes to craft brewing or micro-breweries. But those with their ear to the wire will tell you that the craft brewing scene in Taiwan has been steadily gaining steam over the past decade. And if the past few years are any indication, the popularity of high quality, local brews is set for some serious growth, Taiwan News reported on October 13.
The year 2002 was a starting point in Taiwan's foray into the world of small batch micro-brewing. That year Taiwan joined the WTO, and in order to adhere to WTO member policy, it was forced to break up most industry monopolies. The Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Company (TTL), who had been the only government sanctioned alcohol producer on the island with its Taiwan Beer, had to make way for competition.
But even after opening alcohol market in Taiwan the law didn't necessarily reflect the situation in practice. While a business could theoretically start brewing operations, the reality was that the TTL was nearly sealed in from competition, and only the most committed or affluent investors would be able to make a dent in the market.

Canada: Barley markets described as ‘fairly snug’ due to tight supply
|
Feed barley markets in Western Canada continued to show strength last week with spot bids in some southern Alberta locations edging higher than C$205 per tonne, The Western Producer reported on October 13.
Allen Pirness, a feed grain trader with Market Place Commodities in Lethbridge, said barley markets have been tight in recent weeks with reduced acreage, lower-than-expected yields and limited producer sales supporting prices.
In mid-September, spot barley bids in Lethbridge were around C$195 per tonne. However, values have risen steadily over the past three weeks.
Some southern Alberta feedlots are now beginning to import U.S. corn at around C$212 a tonne.
“Barley markets are fairly snug,” Pirness said Oct. 5.
“We’re in a market right now that’s around C$205 in Lethbridge. You might even argue it’s $208 … so we’re kind of bumping right up against corn.
“There doesn’t seem to be any excess of barley this year with lower acreage and lower yields … so we’re starting to see the effects of a smaller barley crop already with the price staying fairly firm.”
In addition, wet and snowy weather in late September and early October in Alberta may have discouraged some barley deliveries, adding further support to already firm prices.

Myanmar: ThaiBev buys combined 75% stake in two Myanmar distilleries
|
Thai Beverage Public Co has acquired a combined 75% stake in two Myanmar distilleries in a deal worth $742 million, hoping to tap into growth in the country's nascent spirits market, the Bangkok Post reported on October 13.
ThaiBev acquired the 75% stake in Myanmar Supply Chain and Services Go (MSCS) and Myanmar Distillery Co (MDC) from four third-party vendors, including Texas-based private equity firm TPG which sold its 50% stake in MDC, according to their separate announcements.
The deal gives Singapore-listed ThaiBev access to an expanded distribution network in Myanmar, as the food and beverage conglomerate looks to overseas market for growth after a recent sales dip.
ThaiBev sales in the first nine months of its fiscal year, from October 2016 to June 2017, dropped 6% year-on-year to 142 billion baht ($4.3 billion), due to slow economic growth and the observance of a national mourning period.
ThaiBev executives said earlier this month it planned to launch two new spirit products in November and that M&A activities in key markets such as Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar were needed.
The two Myanmar companies operate two production facilities in Yangon and Mandalay under the spirits brand Grand Royal, the largest whisky player in the country.
