USA: Older men drink alcohol more frequently, 62% of all men say they prefer beer to other drinks
|
Among the 67% of U.S. men who drink alcohol, those aged 50 and older are more likely than those under 50 to say they have imbibed within the last 24 hours, which suggests older men drink more frequently than younger men. However, younger men likely drink more than older men on the occasions when they do consume alcohol, Gallup reported on September 11.
Men in all age groups drink more often than women do. Among drinkers, 45% of older men report having had a drink in the past day, followed by 37% of younger men, 30% of older women and 26% of younger women.
U.S. men aged 50 and older report they consumed an average of 5.3 alcoholic drinks over the past seven days, while men aged 18 to 49 had an average of 6.2 drinks. Both older and younger women report drinking fewer than three alcoholic beverages in the last week.
These data come from aggregated results of Gallup's Consumption Habits Survey from 2001-2017, totaling interviews with 11,544 U.S. adults who drink alcohol.

USA, CA: Original Pattern Brewing Company breaks ground on new brewery in Oakland

Original Pattern Brewing Company has announced that it has broken ground on a new brewery and tasting room located at 292 4th Street in the Jack London neighborhood of Oakland California, Brewbound reported.
The Original Pattern tasting room will open to the public by the end of 2017. The brewery, located in a brick and timber former warehouse, will feature a light-filled “indoor beer garden” by day and a cozy setting for meeting and making friends by night. The tasting room will have a mix of communal and intimate seating and is inspired by both vintage and modern design.
Original Pattern is co-founded by former Director of Brewery Operations at 21st Amendment, Ryan Frank, along with partners Caitlin O’Connor, Max Silverstein and Margie Silverstein. “We are thrilled to be a part of the growing Oakland craft beer scene and vibrant local community.” said Ryan Frank. “Opening a brewery has been a long-time dream of all of ours. Canada, MB: Stone Angel Brewing starts production at its own brewery
|
A Winnipeg brewery that launched earlier this year with a contract-brewed version of its first beer has announced that production has started as its own bricks-and-mortar location, Canadian Beer News reported on September 6.
Stone Angel Brewing made its debut at the Flatlander’s Beer Festival with Luther’s Folly, a 5.25% abv and 22 IBU “kolsch-ist blond ale” that was brewed at Brazen Hall.
According to Stone Angel’s President and Director of Operations Paul McMullan, the Stone Angel brewhouse at 1875 Pembina Highway received its license last week, and is now producing beer for a mid-September opening of its taproom and patio.
“We plan to open with three or four different beers which we hope will become some of our core pours,” says McMullan. “We’re planning on adding numerous small batches and seasonal beers to our taps shortly.”

USA, OH: DankHouse Brewing owners expect to open their doors in just a few weeks
|
The latest addition to the exploding beer scene in Licking County is DankHouse Brewing in Newark, Drink Up Columbus reported on September 8.
Husband and wife owners Josh and Heather Lange expect to open their doors in just a few weeks, though DankHouse has been several years in the making. The couple initially wanted to open a craft beer bottle shop, but their vision ultimately morphed into building a 2.5 barrel brewery. Josh left his job to devote all his energy to the renovation and construction of the new brewery — he is the architect, general contractor and chief laborer for the project. While Heather continues to teach at a local elementary school, she is providing the artistic touches to the finished space, which features a full wall mural on the left side providing a great splash of color and whimsy, and multi-color wood paneling brightening the interior. The small L-shaped bar is faced with 3D wall panels providing a unique look, and the surface of the bar itself will be covered with tiny BB’s encased in resin. Heather is determined that they all be properly aligned before the resin is applied. They estimate there will be 220,000 of them.

Canada, NB: Moosehead Breweries to add small batch brewhouse to its primary facility in Saint John
|
Moosehead Breweries has announced plans to add a small batch brewhouse to its primary brewery at 89 Main Street West in Saint John, Canadian Beer News reported on September 8.
According to the announcement, the new brewery will “feature a 20-barrel brewing system and a 3-barrel pilot system, allowing Moosehead to create new beers in smaller quantities for offer at retail, on-site in the tap room or at bars and restaurants.” The facility will also include a tap room, growler station, beer store, and merchandise shop.
“As a company, we’re excited to have the flexibility to experiment in ways that can be difficult within our primary brewhouse,” said Andrew Oland, President and CEO, Moosehead Breweries in a statement. “We have a talented team ready to bring incredible new innovations to life and I can’t wait to introduce these new beers to Saint John and to Canada.”
The announcement comes seven months after Moosehead cancelled plans to open a similar small batch facility on the Saint John Waterfront.
Construction on the new brewery is set to start next week, with a planned opening date of May 2018.

USA, NY: Liquid State Brewing Company reaches out to the community for crowdfunding
|
Liquid State Brewing Company, a new brewery that’s planned for Ithaca’s west end, is reaching out to the community for a crowdfunding assist in getting open this fall. They hope to raise $30,000 on a Kickstarter page to finish their 2,800-square-foot beer hall, 14850.com reported on September 8.
“Recent state legislation has helped create a vibrant and developing Beer Trail up and down the lakes boasting more than 30 breweries and hundreds of wineries,” says Liquid State of the burgeoning Finger Lakes beer community.
“Our plans are to create new and innovative styles of beer while continuing to make our favorite classics,” they say, and they’re even growing their own hops on a nearby one-acre farm. “We will also offer other New York beers, ciders, wines and spirits.”
“Along with a basic German-inspired small plate menu, we plan to highlight local food trucks (a growing mobile food faction) to bring our customers a constantly changing menu of tasty bites,” says the group on their Kickstarter page. “Our Beer Hall will also host local events such as live music, podcasts, live radio broadcasts, not-for-profit community fundraising, art openings, talented academic faculty and student speakers, and whatever else tickles our fancy.”

Spain: Damm Group inaugurates Cerveza Victoria brewery in Malaga
|
The new Cerveza Victoria plant in Malaga was inaugurated on September 6 following a whopping €6 million investment. The Damm group, who bought the brand back in 2011 from Heineken, gave local business representatives and politicians a first glimpse of the new factory on Avenida Velazquez and answered questions about the venture, RTN reported on September 9.
Although Cerveza Victoria continued to be marketed as a Malagan beer, in 1994 the company changed site to Murcia when the original plant on the Guadalhorce estate closed.
The Cerveza Victoria brand was originally founded by Ricardo and Luis Franquelo on September 8, 1928, coinciding with the day of Malaga’s public saint, and became one of the country’s most popular beers in the 60s. It seemed particularly symbolic that nearly 90 year later to the day, the beer’s production returned to its origins.
The factory sits on an area of over 3,300 square meters and has the capacity to produce up to 30,000 litres of beer a day. Forty employees will work at the site across the four areas – fermentation, packaging, distribution and the museum.
After twenty years, the beer’s famous slogan “Malagueña y Exquisita” (Exquisite and Malagan) makes sense once more.

The Hungarian government is reportedly ready to submit a bill to ban Heineken’s use of a five-pointed red star on its logo to the parliament. The cabinet is also mulling new measures to curb the dominance of multinational beer makers in Hungary, The Budapest Beacon reported on September 11.
The campaign against multinational beer companies would fall in line with the government's aggressive stance towards companies or sectors seen as strategic areas of the economy. The new session in parliament could also see the revival of legislation targeting retailers.
“The legal barriers now have been cleared and it is up to the Fidesz caucus whether the bill will be submitted to parliament,” government commissioner for trade policy Kristof Szatmary told pro-government Magyar Idok daily. The bill had previously been shelved for several months.
The European Commission has revealed in a statement that it has no objection to a Hungarian regulation to ban the commercial use of symbols that could refer to or remind people of oppression by totalitarian regimes, such as the former communist regimes in Central Europe.

UK: Price of beer about to rise again because of inflation levels
|
The price of a pint is about to rise again as UK inflation levels bubble up, the European boss of the world's largest brewer has warned, City A. M. reported on September 11.
Jason Warner, AB InBev's president for northern Europe told the Sunday Telegraph that increased UK costs mean there "has to be an increase" in the price of beers.
UK inflation stayed flat last month at 2.6 per cent, an increase of two per cent since last year.
Warner said that AB InBev, which makes widespread brands such as Stella Artois and Budweiser, was beginning to feel the effects of higher inflation.
He said a price rise was inevitable within the next two years, but was not able to specify how much the increase would be.
The current average price of a pint in the UK is £3.60, going up to £4.20 in London.
The most expensive place to buy a beer is currently Surrey, according to a survey by the Good Pub Guide, where it costs £4.20 to buy a drink.
AB InBev is already adjusting its focus to the premium drinks market as sales of low-priced brands like Budweiser slow across the globe.

Ireland: Heineken tops list of Checkout’s Top 50 Alcohol brands

Heineken has topped the list of Checkout’s Top 50 Alcohol brands, produced in association with Nielsen, Hospitality Ireland reported on September 12.
According to the research, Heineken is also number one on the Top 20 LADS (Long Alcoholic Drinks) list.
Jenny Whelan, editor of Checkout magazine notes, “Heineken has done a lot of good work in both NPD and customer engagement in recent years, and this has clearly paid off.
“It has been ahead of the trend towards low-alcohol offerings, and it is probably the only beer brand in the world to run an ad that centres on saying no to a beer (in a bold TV spot featuring racing legend Sir Jackie Stewart).
“It is this kind progressive approach to the market that keeps Heineken so consistently relevant.”
Meanwhile, looking at the other alcoholic drinks categories, Santa Rita continues to be the market leader for wine in Ireland, but the data also reveals that names like McGuigan (number two on the Top 20 Wines list) and Wolf Blass (number three) have both seen growth this year.

Kenya: Kenya Breweries Limited expands Senator beer production to keep up with demand
|
Kenya Breweries Limited has expanded its end-to-end capacity for the production and distribution of Senator to meet existing and emerging demand for the low-end beer brand, The Star reported on September 13.
In a short-term plan to boost capacity, KBL has unveiled newly-installed rackers in its Ruaraka plant following a Sh800 million project expected to increase its Senator production by 20 percent.
KBL managing director Jane Karuku said the move is among the measures in place to plug the gap in Senator demand, ahead of the commissioning of the Sh15 billion brewery in Kisumu within two years. KBL is also seeking applications for Senator Keg distributors, a central part of its larger plan to improve its products footprint across Kenya.
“Demand in Senator has been growing faster than we expected in the last year as more retailers open new outlets and more consumers trade up from illicit brews. We have responded to this trend with the newly-commissioned rackers project meant to lift our production capacity. We hope to meet demand with this, ahead of the Kisumu brewery opening,” said Karuku.
