Brewery news Canada, NL: Two new craft breweries launching soon in Newfoundland
According to reports in the Western Star and Southern Gazette, two communities in Newfoundland will soon have their own craft breweries.

In the town of Burin on the Burin Peninsula on Newfoundland’s south coast, partners Jennie O’Keefe and Chris Johnson are establishing Rough Waters Brewing, with an aim to be open in time for Victoria Day next year.

Set to be located next door to Smugglers Cove Roadhouse, where owner Mike Brennan is planning on having Rough Waters as the exclusive draught beer supplier once it opens, the brewery will offer four core brands – including “a wheat beer, a blonde beer and a porter,” plus one TBC – as well as a variety of seasonal beers.

Over on the western side of the island, an environment assessment is underway at 53-55 West St. in Corner Brook where building owner Major’s Logging Ltd. is looking to open Boomstick Brewing.

Planned to include a brewhouse, taproom, growler station, and retail store, Boomstick will occupy 7,000 square feet of the building, with the remainder to become a boutique hotel. No timeline for either establishment has been announced.

Brewery news USA, CO: Crazy Mountain Brewing Co. celebrates grand opening of its third Denver-area location
Crazy Mountain Brewing Co. celebrated the grand opening of its third Denver-area location on August 25 inside the space that formerly housed World of Beer in Glendale, Denverite reported on August 29.

The spot at 660 S. Colorado Blvd. is the first of two World of Beer spaces Crazy Mountain is taking over. The brewery plans to soon open up inside the former at 7260 W. Alaska Drive in Lakewood.

Crazy Mountain also has locations in Denver’s Baker neighborhood and Edwards in the Western Slope.

At its Glendale location, Crazy Mountain features 24 beers on draft, including year-round taps for Crazy Mountain Amber Ale and the Creedence Pilsner. It also offers rotating seasonal brews like the Snowcat Coffee Stout and the Bridge Street Holiday Ale, and the “Local’s Stash” selection of specialty brews like the Rye Whiskey Barrel Aged Black IPA and Gin Barrel Aged Juniper IPA.

Hours at the new Glendale spot are 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. weekdays and noon to 2 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Brewery news USA, OH: Wiedemann Brewery and Bohemian Beer Garden to hold official groundbreaking ceremony on August 30
It's an event that's been years in the making: An official groundbreaking for the new $3 million Wiedemann Brewery and Bohemian Beer Garden in St. Bernard takes place on August 30, Cincinnati.com reported.

The complex, which is expected to open in February or March, will be at 4811 Vine St., in the former Imwalle Memorial funeral home in the village's downtown area.

Getting to this point has been a long road for owners Jon and Betsy Newberry. They brought back the Wiedemann name and established the Geo. Wiedemann Brewing Co. back in 2012. Two years later, in 2014, they announced plans to open a brewery in Newport's WaterTower Square. That would have been a homecoming of sorts: George Wiedemann founded the original Wiedemann Brewing Co. in Newport in 1870.

But the financing for the WaterTower location never came through, Newberry said. A second location in Newport also didn't work out.

And the Newberrys got a good deal to buy the property in their own neighborhood, St. Bernard. Owning the building and having that as collateral, as well as the dozen or so investors (including Wiedemann descendants) that they've picked up along the way, made the venture more appealing to banks, Jon Newberry said. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Grainworks Brewing Company set to open in Butler County on September 9
Butler County’s newest brewery is set to open in early September, according to its owners, Hamilton Journal News reported on August 27.

Grainworks Brewing Company, 7790 Service Center Drive in West Chester Twp., is the work of Steven Brock, Brian McGinnis and Anthony Russell, all of Liberty Twp.

A grand opening celebration from 11 a.m. until midnight Sept. 9 will feature six to eight different beers on tap for the festivities, including flagship beers Haybale ESB, Scottish MISTS Scottish Ale and Killjoy Porter.

Located just off Cox Road near Voice of America MetroPark, Grainworks Brewing Company will initially offer six beers, including IPA, Stout and Porter.

Seasonal and special releases featured at the event will include blueberry ale, brown ale and West Coast IPA.

Brews likely to be featured shortly after opening could include sour beer, which has an intentionally acidic, tart or sour taste, and a saison, a pale ale that is highly carbonated, fruity, spicy and often bottle conditioned.

“It’ll be a pretty eclectic mix,” Brock, the company’s head brewer and its chief financial officer, previously told the Journal-News.

Brewery news Canada, BC: Mariner Brewing announces soft launch
The first brewery to open in Coquitlam, British Columbia for more than 15 years has announced its soft launch, Canadian Beer News reported.

Mariner Brewing has been established by Byron Vallis, Lauren Ang, and Wim Vander Zalm, with brewing being overseen by head brewer Kevin Wilson. Aside from the short-lived Coquitlam Brewing brewpub that operated from 1999 to 2001, Mariner is Coquitlam’s first modern craft brewery.

Located at H-1100 Lansdowne Drive, the Mariner taproom and retail store opened on August 26, several days ahead of its official opening on August 30th. Beers currently available by the glass and growler include Northeast IPA (7.5% abv, 67 IBU), Amber Ale (5.1% abv, 30 IBU), Cream Ale (4.8% abv, 12 IBU), and Sour Weisse (4.5% abv, 5 IBU). Cans will follow in September and October.

Brewery news Canada, NS: Backstage Brewing set to open soon in Stellarton
The Atlantic Canada Beer Blog reports that a new brewery is getting set to open soon in Stellarton, a small town near New Glasgow in Nova Scotia.

Backstage Brewing is being opened by A.J. Leadbetter, his wife Beth, and her parents, Lynn and Wayne MacDonald in a building at 37 Bridge Ave. that housed a paint shop owned by Leadbetter’s family until it was damaged by fire in 2015.

Now repaired and refurbished, the facility will include a brewery as well as a taproom that will pour several Backstage brands and a selection of beers from other Nova Scotia breweries, as well as local wine and cider.

Backstage Brewing is expected to soft launch in early September.

Brewery news USA, FL: Nightlife Brewing Company already open in Miami
There’s a new brewery in Miami with some very big plans for brew fans, Miami.com reported on August 28.

Located adjacent to Marlins Park, the newly debuted Nightlife Brewing Company aims to offer guests a different and better nightlife experience, according to founder Juan T. O’Naghten.

“To us, it is all about the story, the history, and the great times that make your memories legendary. Every night we add a bit more to this city, and our beer aims to help enhance your experience,” he said. “Brewing is part science, part art, and all passion here at NightLife. Passion for the beer and for all the good times shared with friends and family that give this city its unique history.”

The tap room is open select weekdays from 4-11 p.m., serving up brews from other local breweries as part of their guest-tap series. Their own signature formulas — including a limited release pale ale called Next Thursday — will debut at the end of September after their grand opening.

Brewery news USA, IN: C.T. Doxey Brewing Co. to open soon in Anderson, IN
Dale Van Deraa looked for a lot of places to build a brewery from the ground up, including Arizona and Oregon, The Herald Bulletin reported on August 26.

Even once he settled on opening a brewery in Anderson, it took a few different ideas and locations before he found the right fit.

C.T. Doxey Brewing Co., of which Van Deraa is founding brewer, will open soon at 718 Jackson St., Anderson.

Van Deraa said he decided to move back to Anderson in his brewery location search after visiting with friends, local business owners and former Mayor Kevin Smith on a trip.

"It really felt like the right place to be," he said.

Van Deraa previously went into business with Dan Hiles, owner of Kettle Top Brewhouse. The two were going to open Branch Water Brewery next door to the brewhouse but chose to open their own breweries separately due to creative differences. That's when Van Deraa and the Oakley Brothers decided to partner up.

Despite having different addresses, the brewery shares a building with the Oakley Brothers Distillery. The distillery taproom is expected to open in about six weeks, and the brewery taproom will be the next project on deck for the team.

However, C.T. Doxey is ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, NL: Split Rock Brewing opens its doors in Twillingate
Atlantic Canada Beer Blog reports that a new brewery and pub has opened in Twillingate, a small town on Twillingate Island just off the northeastern shore of Newfoundland.

Split Rock Brewing and its associated Stage Head Pub have been founded by homebrewers Allison and Matt Vincent, along with business partners Tim and Robin Vatcher.

Located at 119 Main Street in Twillingate, Split Rock/Stage Head opened last week, and is offering samples, pints, and growlers of six initial beers: Combines Ale (5.3% abv), Bluff Head Bitter (4.6% abv), Gateway IPA (6.7% abv), Red Sky Red Rye (4.9% abv), Alli’s Big Brown Ale (5.6% abv), and Black Island Stout (6.1% abv).

Brewery news USA, HI: Kona Brewing Co.’s new facility opening pushed to 2019
The expected completion date for Kona Brewing Co.’s new facility has been pushed to 2019, the Hawaii Tribune Herald reported on August 26.

Kona Brewing’s new facility, which when finished will enable the company to produce an estimated 100,000 barrels of beer a year, is slated to go before the Kailua Village Design Commission next month for consideration.

The facility is located on a 2.6-acre parcel just down the street from its current location on Pawai Place. The company broke ground on the facility in March 2016 and initially expected to be in full operation by early 2018.

But Mattson Davis, former Kona Brewing CEO and now managing partner of Manini Holdings LLC, said the completion date was pushed back because of setbacks on wastewater systems.

“Their hope is to finish by spring of 2019,” he said.

The beer produced in the new brewery will be more than a nine-fold increase from its current capacity. The beer will be packaged in cans and kegs and stay within the state, Davis said. Bottled beer will continue to come from facilities on the mainland.

Kona Brewing included specific sustainability measures in the planned brewery to limit its draw on water resources here and allow the brewery to get ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NV: Five beer enthusiasts aim at opening Henderson’s first nano brewery by next spring
Five local men with a passion for craft beer want to bring a nano brewery to Henderson, The Gleaner reported on August 26.

“One of the common threads that all five of us have is our pride in Henderson," said Rob Toerne. "We want to make this a showcase, an example of what can happen in Henderson."

Toerne said he and his business associates, Sean Wilder, Doug Laramie, Austin Vowels and David Osborn, met in somewhat of an unusual manner. Most of the group met online via the Facebook group, The Henderson Beer Club.

"A lot of other cities around here have breweries, Hopkinsville and Paducah," said Wilder. "So we thought, why not Henderson?"

The business proposal was hashed out, naturally, over beers one night.

“We’re still kind of in the planning stages, getting things set up and all that," said Wilder. "But it’s going to be what they call a nano brewery, which is even smaller than a microbrewery. Doug will be brewing the beer in the back and we’ll be pushing it across the bar in the front. It will only be available in our facility to start.”

The nano brewery will serve a variety of beer.

“We’ll have some core beers ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MO: AB InBev opens small batch brewery for its employees
Anheuser-Busch InBev has had worldwide success with its own beer recipes, and now the company is giving its St. Louis workers an opportunity to develop their own.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that a long-vacant building that once housed starting and fermenting operations recently opened as a small batch brewery, dubbed "Star Shop Brewery."

Star shop brewmaster Dusty Rhodes says employees first identify the kind of beer they want to brew. Then they select from more than a dozen kinds of hops and several kinds of malts. After that, they mill the grain in a grinder.

"We like to keep a large variety on hand so they can experiment," Rhodes said.

Eight fermenters can be filled with mixes of water, malt, hops and yeast. Other ingredients can include lemon zest, orange rind and hibiscus flowers.

Employees have spent several hours since the small batch brewery opened making 7- to 10-gallon batches that are put into kegs and served on-site after a few weeks of aging. Those employees have included management trainees from outside of St. Louis.

Groups compete against one another to develop the best tasting brew as part of team-building exercises. Travis Moore, senior brewmaster at AB InBev's St. Louis brewery, does the judging.

"This gives ...More info on site

Brewery news World: Carlsberg aiming at being the centre of new “beer revolution”
Carlsberg is poised to put itself at the centre of a new beer revolution following its rediscovered love of brewing science, the Morning Advertiser reported on August 29.

Jessica Spence, chief commercial officer, said the business had lost its scientific focus on beer in recent years, but was now seeking to change that and put research back in the spotlight.

The company was founded by JC Jacobsen who went on to create the Carlsberg Foundation, which was dedicated to scientific research in the field of beer.

“The laboratory is the heartbeat of our business and we lost that over the past five to 10 years. This place is special because there is nowhere like it in the world. We have fantastic scientists with a mix of disciplines, all focused on beer under one roof.”

Founder Jacobsen's focus on science was aimed at both improving and developing the quality and understanding of beer, which no other major brewer is doing, claimed Spence.

“We didn’t for a while,” she said, speaking at the brewery’s 170th anniversary celebrations in Copenhagen, “but we’ve come back to it.”

Brewery news UK: Carlsberg launching San Miguel gluten free this September
Carlsberg UK is expanding its premium world beers portfolio with new San Miguel gluten free this September, FoodBev.com reported on August 29.

Aiming to tap into the growing gluten-free lager market, the new beverage will launch exclusively in the grocery channel with Tesco and will also be available to all on-trade customers.

Emulating the same taste as San Miguel Especial, Carlsberg said San Miguel gluten free offers a full-bodied taste with fruit and bread aromas which has already proved popular in Spain.

Carlsberg UK vice president of marketing Liam Newton said: “The demand for premium world beers with heritage and authenticity is showing no sign of abating, so we’re proud that we’re able to make the San Miguel experience inclusive for everyone.

“Gluten free is the major driver in the free-from market and following previous success in Spain, we’re confident that San Miguel gluten free will be a hit with UK consumers.”

The beer will be available in 330ml multipacks of six at Tesco and the on-trade in a single 330ml bottle from 19 September.
