WHO IS RUINING MY BEER FOAM?
ABSTRACT
It is an interesting observation that dry hopped
beers often have less stable beer foam. Why is this?
Comprehensive testing by a research team has found
that with dry hopping, the amount of iso-alpha acids
slightly decreases in the beer due to precipitation.
Increases in humulinones and alpha acids were
observed but both are rather foam positive so they
are likely not the cause. Beta acids are foam negative,
but due to low concentration in beer, they are also
not guilty. But two parameters were found to be of
importance: 1) Temperature - the foam stability is very
sensitive to temperature change, and 2) Hop lipids -
they are known to be gushing surpressing, so it is no
surprise they are foam negative. Problems with foam

USA: Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors slash malting barley contracts
|
In another blow to Montana’s struggling ag economy, the state’s barley growers have recently learned that two of the region’s largest buyers of their crop will reduce the number of purchase contracts they offer by up to 60 percent, Great Falls Tribune reported on January 25.
Both Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors have informed growers they will only be purchasing a fraction of the malt barley they have in the past five years because of an overabundance of barley available on the global market. Combined, the two brewing giants account for the purchase of nearly two-thirds of the barley grown in northcentral Montana.
“The past two growing seasons have resulted in large volumes of high quality barley, which has more than met the requirements of barley users,” said Russ Harville, vice president of raw materials for Anheuser-Busch, in a prepared statement issued near the end of December. “As a result, for 2017, we are modifying our barley procurement to accurately reflect our needs. Anheuser-Busch has a long history of partnership with growers, and we look forward to continuing that partnership.”

Canada, BC: Gibsons Tapworks getting set to open soon in Gibsons
|
A new brewery and taproom is getting set to open soon in Gibsons, a town in British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast region, Canadian Beer News reported.
Gibsons Tapworks is being launched by three friends at 537 Cruice Lane, a building located close to the shore in the Lower Gibsons area, and just steps from Molly’s Reach, the restaurant made famous in The Beachcombers television series.
While the finishing touches are still worked on at the brewery, the Gibsons team recently visited Moody Ales to brew one of their recipes on the pilot system. The result – HWY 102 Oat Stout – is now on tap at Moody, and is described as follows:
This beer has a smooth roast character with a touch of sweetness. The rounded mouthfeel is attributed to a healthy dose of oats and the slight chocolate roast flavour is a result of the roast barley and pale chocolate malts. With an ABV of 5.0% and IBU of 22, this is a beer you can sit down with and spend some time.
Gibsons Tapworks is expected to open sometime in February.

|
Southern Tier Brewing Company opens first satellite brewpub in Pittsburgh, TheFullPint.com reported on January 24.
Nestled within easy walking distance between Heinz Field and PNC Park, Southern Tier has officially opened its brewpub at 316 North Shore Drive. It features both pub-exclusive and classic STBC beers plus a full food menu. Craft beer fans can expect the same commitment to quality, relentless innovation, and brewery visit experience that the company has offered since 2002.
The Pittsburgh brewery features a state of the art, German-designed Krones Micro Cube capable of cranking out about 8.5 barrels per turn (10hL to be exact.) Guests will note eight 25 hL fermenters, some of which will flow directly to taps behind the bar, providing Pittsburgh with the freshest beer possible. Brewer David Harries will brew local-only beers for the pub (some that’ll stay local, some that’ll go into full production in STBC’s 110 barrel brewhouse in Lakewood, NY), local collaborations, and more.

USA, MI: Stormcloud Brewing Company breaks ground on new production facility
|
Stormcloud Brewing Company in Frankfort broke ground on their new production facility on January 24, 9 & 10 News reported.
Stormcloud purchased the six acre property over the summer.
It’s just outside of Frankfort along M-115.
On January 24, crews came in to start moving dirt around the site which will eventually become a 10-thousand square foot facility.
They hope to produce 20 barrels of beer which is 12 more than they're currently producing.
Stormcloud is excited to expand in Benzie County and beyond.
“It's totally exciting, it's fantastic. Quality is at the forefront of everything we do, so it's taken a bit longer than we expected it to but we wanted to make sure all the right pieces were in place,” says Keirsun Scott, the marketing manager at Stormcloud Brewing Co.
The brewing company says they plan to have the facility up by mid-summer and hope to start brewing soon after.

Canada, ON: Contract brewery Red Thread Brewing sets opening date on January 26
|
A new contact brewery based out of Toronto has announced that it will be holding its launch event next week at a craft beer restaurant north of the city, Canadian Beer News reported on January 17.
As reported by Ontario Beverage Network, Red Thread Brewing has been founded by sommelier Carl Milroy and chef Ken Boyd.
After pouring samples at a few select events over the last couple of months, the duo is presenting the official debut of Red Thread on Thursday January 26th at Hungry Brew Hops in Newmarket.
Four beers will be on offer, including the flagship Make Tracks Craft Lager, as well as “lactose orange stout, saison, and expresso-infused red ale.”

USA, LA: Port Orleans Brewing Company slated to open in the first half of this year
|
Construction is finally underway on anticipated brewery and taproom, Port Orleans Brewing Company. According to Gambit, the new beer company situated at 4124 Tchoupitoulas St. is slated to open in the first half of this year with a lineup of easy drinking, low-alcohol ales and lagers.
The 30-barrel brewhouse will feature eight 60-barrel fermenters and six 60-barrel lagering tanks, as well as a grain mill and a canning line for distribution. Head brewer Brian Allen (formerly of Mother’s Brewing Company in Missouri) will be developing the recipes.
The copper-topped bar will feature 16 taps serving both standard and experimental brews. Port Orleans will also be subletting kitchen space to an as-of-yet-unnamed local chef.
Port Orleans isn’t the only beer hub on the horizon. Brieux Carre, Parleaux Beer Lab, and Royal Brewing Company are all slated to debut over the next several months.

Canada, NS: 2 Crows Brewing to open its brewery in Halifax on January 28th
|
The Coast reports that 2 Crows Brewing will be opening its brewery and taproom next week in Halifax.
Located at 1932 Brunswick St., 2 Crows has been founded by Mark Huizink, Kelly Huizink and Jeremy Taylor, with the article noting that “Kelly will work the bar come opening, Mark (her husband) is the business side and Taylor is their brewer, with a distilling degree from Scotland under his belt.”
Core beers from the brewery will include Pollyanna Wild Northeast IPA (7.3% abv, 64 IBU), Liesse Table Beer (3.5% abv, 16 IBU), and Pecadillo Oat Pilsner (4.8% abv, 28 IBU). Also available at opening will be the seasonal Innisfree Rustic Farmhouse Saison (7.6% abv, 28 IBU).
2 Crows Brewing will officially launch on Saturday January 28th, with business hours set to be 12:00 noon to 10:00 PM on Thursday to Saturday, and 12:00 noon to 8:00 PM on Sunday to Wednesday.

Canada, ON: Refined Fool Brewing eyeing another spot for expansion
|
Two months after cancelling plans to open a second location in downtown Sarnia due to issues with the building owner, Refined Fool Brewing is now eyeing another spot for expansion, Canadian Beer News reported on January 18.
As reported by Blackburn News, the brewery is exploring the option of opening a new location at 1326 London Rd., and has had a “request for future consideration of a proposed amendment to the official plan” approved by Sarnia City Council.
No further details on the possible expansion have been announced or confirmed by Refined Fool at this time.

USA, RI: Ragged Island Brewing Co. working hard to open their taproom next month
|
In Portsmouth, Matt Gray and five other co-owners of Ragged Island Brewing Co., a new microbrewery specializing in IPAs, are working hard to open the taproom’s doors next month. Last summer, the entrepreneurs had signed a lease at their 200 High Point Ave location, and now they’re just waiting on one final piece of paperwork, a federal permit, to come through, What’s Up News reported on January 20.
Once Ragged Island opens, Gray said they’ll start small by brewing 30 gallons (about one keg) at a time and will plan to be open for tastings on Saturdays and Sundays. “We’re going to start with a few IPA styles,” Gray said, “and we’ll also have a porter and another style we like, an ESB, which stands for extra special bitter.” Craft beer fans can expect to see three to four types of beer to sample when they visit.
Brewmaster John Almeida, who’s been brewing since the 80s, is currently working on a few test batches and refining the recipes for different variations of his TwoTree IPA, a name that evolved from saying the phrase “two, three beers.” Almeida said he initially took up brewing as a hobby because he didn’t like the beer

USA, FL: Southern Swells Brewing opening Saturday, January 28
|
Southern Swells Brewing is opening Saturday, January 28 in Jacksonville Beach, but it won’t have its own beer for another couple of months. The brewery is in Beach Plaza at 1312 Beach Blvd., Florida Times-Union reported.
Co-owner Corey Adams said they’ve got all their state and federal licenses, so they’ll start brewing the following week. But when it opens on January 28, all 20 taps will be guest beers.
The total space is about 7,500 square feet, but the brewery is closed off, leaving room for 100 in the tap room. It will be open noon to 1 a.m. on January 28, then open Wednesdays-Saturdays until they have their own beers. After that, he’s hoping to be open seven days a week.
The first beers going into tanks, he said, will be a saison, IPA, double IPA and milk stout.

USA, NY: Brooklyn Brewery to stay put in Williamsburg
|
After a protracted search for a new home, Brooklyn Brewery appears to be staying put in Williamsburg, Brewbound reported on January 23.
Brooklyn Brewery founder and chairman Steve Hindy made the announcement on January 19 in a post on the company’s website titled “Home Sweet Williamsburg.”
“We look forward to maintaining a substantial brewing operation and expanding our office space, and possibly developing a restaurant and beer hall in Williamsburg, our home for the last 26 years,” Hindy wrote.
Spurred by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s support for maintaining manufacturing businesses in the city, Hindry wrote that two of the brewery’s three landlords have expressed interest in reupping Brooklyn Brewery’s leases, which is currently slated to expire in 2025. (The third lease — for a warehouse across the street from the brewery — likely won’t be renewed and the space will be redeveloped into housing or a commercial space.)
Brooklyn Brewery president Robin Ottaway told Brewbound that a combination of rising rents in the popular neighborhood and landlords’ desire for commercial businesses led the brewery’s management team to explore its options, including moving to a Brooklyn Navy Yard project that’s becoming a food production hub.

Nigeria: Guinness Nigeria shareholders approve USD127 mln rights issue
|
Guinness Nigeria Plc on January 23 received the approval of its shareholders for a proposed N40 billion ($127 million) rights issue, the Premium Times reported.
The decision was reached at the company’s Extra-Ordinary General Meeting (EGM) attended by local shareholders and representatives of international shareholders in Lagos.
Babatunde Savage, Chairman, Guinness Nigeria Plc, said the shareholders’ approval would enable the company raise up to N40 bln as fresh cash injection into the business operations.
“Guinness Nigeria has been in this country for over 60 years and, in that time, we have continued to add significant economic and social value to Nigeria and Nigerians,” Mr. Savage said.
“We believe this Rights Issue will positively impact on the financial performance of Guinness Nigeria and help mitigate the impact of increasing finance costs in what continues to be a challenging economic environment in Nigeria.”
Guinness Nigeria Plc, which is a subsidiary of Diageo plc, had announced at the end of 2016 its intention to offer a rights issue as part of plans to optimise its balance sheet and improve its financial flexibility.

India: Heineken unable to remove chairman Vijay Mallya despite owning higher stake in United Breweries
|
Dutch beer maker Heineken International is caught in a bind as it is unable to remove chairman Vijay Mallya from its Indian joint venture United Breweries (UB) despite owning a higher stake. The beleaguered billionaire is causing reputational risks to United Breweries due to his legal battles with lenders and investigation by government agencies for misappropriation of funds, the Economic Times reported on January 24.
Though Heineken owns a much higher stake than its partner at 42.4%, the Articles of Association (AoA) between the two shareholders states that Mallya will be entitled to be the lifelong chairman apart from a non-retiring director unless he voluntarily steps down and nominates one.
According to an agreement in 2009 between the two, Mallya has the right to choose his successor. A change in the AoA needs an approval from 75% of the shareholders.

The Czech Republic: AB InBev invests USD15 mln in Samson brewery
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) group continues with the modernisation of Samson brewery in České Budějovice. The investment into the new machine room, fermenting tanks, filtering tanks, warehouses, pasteurisation gear or cleaning and hygienic station totals USD15 mln, Prague Monitor reported on January 24.
The spokesperson for AB InBev, Kathleen Van Boxelaer, said the group will continue to invest into the brewery in the next two years as part of the biggest upgrade in more than 20 years.

South Africa: AB InBev starts voluntary severance program in South Africa
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world's largest brewer, has started a voluntary severance program in South Africa, but the company said a newspaper report that it had made offers to more than 1,000 managers was incorrect.
Citing an internal memo, Business Day newspaper said the brewer had offered more than 1,000 managers in South Africa voluntary severance following its merger with SABMiller.
AB InBev's spokeswoman Robyn Chalmers said the company had started the program but denied that 1,000 managerial jobs would go.
"It is too early in the process to say how many people may opt for the voluntary offer. It is thus completely incorrect to say that about 1 000 managerial roles will be reduced, as has been reported," she said.

UK: Carlsberg and Heineken announce beer price increases for this year
|
Britain’s beer drinkers could soon shell out more for a pint of their favourite ale, as some of the biggest brewing companies plan to put prices up this year, The Sun reported on January 24.
Carlsberg and Heineken have become the latest brewers to unveil beer price increases for 2017, affecting many of the most popular brands on the market.
Trade magazine The Morning Advertiser reported on January 23 that Carlsberg prices were going up by 2.6 per cent on average across the board, affecting brands like Tuborg, Tetley’s, Holsten Pils, Skol and San Miguel.
Heineken also confirmed that it would see an average price increase of 6p per pint across its brands, with a 6.6p increase for Foster’s.
As well as Heineken, its brands include Desperados, Kronenbourg, Deuchers IPA and John Smith’s.
While the companies have confirmed that wholesale prices are going up by an average of 6p a pint, it is not yet clear how much more drinkers will have to pay at their local pub.
It’s likely, though, that a rise in wholesale prices will impact the price at the pump.

Nigeria: Heineken’s Nigeria unit under police investigation

The Nigerian unit of Dutch brewer Heineken NV is under police investigation after a former supplier complained to the government, Bloomberg reported on January 25.
Lawyers for TMDK Oil Traders Ltd. petitioned the minister of justice and attorney-general to start the probe after the company’s three-year contract to provide fuel to the brewer lapsed in September, Nigerian Breweries Plc said in a statement on the Nigerian Stock Exchange’s website on January 24.
“Recently, some managers in Nigerian Breweries have been asked to report to the force headquarters” for questioning, the Lagos-based company said in the statement. “It appears that the petition is targeted at persons connected to Nigerian Breweries, including the wife of our managing director” Nicolaas Vervelde.
While TMDK complained of “bias” when it bid for a new contract, Nigerian Breweries’ auditors concluded otherwise after an internal investigation, according to the statement. It didn’t provide further detail of the allegations.
Nigerian Breweries, the biggest beer-maker in the West African nation, is co-operating with police, it said. The shares fell 1.4 percent, the most since Jan. 3, to 142.5 naira in Lagos by the close on January 24. The company made the announcement after the market closed.

India: Central Bureau of Investigation visits United Breweries’ offices in Bengaluru

A team of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) from Delhi ‘visited’ United Breweries’ offices in Bengaluru on January 23. The UB Group spokesperson confirmed the visit of the CBI officials and said that the company is fully cooperating with investigative agency, the Financial Express reported on the same day.
According to reports, a 12-member team of the CBI is searching the offices in the UB City with a search warrant from a Delhi court, while the specific reason for the search warrant is yet not known. UB Group is led by Vijay Mallya. The flamboyant billionaire is facing the process of recovery of Rs 6,203 crore from banks in the Kingfisher Airlines case and has been declared a proclaimed offender by a court.
As per the reports by PTI, the CBI officials’ visit to UB Group offices comes days after the Bengaluru Debt Recovery Tribunal on January 19 ordered the SBI-led consortium of banks to start the process of recovering Rs 6,203 crore at an annual interest rate of 11.5 per cent from the embattled tycoon and his companies in the Kingfisher Airlines case.

Thailand: Chief of Bangkok’s Metropolitan Police is asked to explain payments from ThaiBev
|
The chief of Bangkok’s Metropolitan Police, Sanit Mahathavorn, has been receiving THB50,000 each month from ThaiBev, the country’s largest booze producer, and the payment is listed as an “advisory fee”, Coconuts Bangkok reported on January 25.
The officer and the company have been given a week to reveal why the official is being paid by the company and what services he is providing.
The Secretary-General of the Ombudsman’s Office, Rakkecha Chaechai, announced that a letter was presented to Sanit on January 24 requesting an answer about whether he actually is working for the company, if he received payment from them, and if he currently works for them and continues to receive money for services provided.
Rakkecha noted that a similar letter would be sent to ThaiBev asking why they were paying the official.
Apparently, contact was also made with the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) to request information about Sanit’s assets and whether he declared income from ThaiBev. According to The Nation, he did declare income from the alcohol producer.
After information is received from all parties, appropriate action will be taken, it is reported.
