BITTERNESS QUESTIONS IN DRY HOPPED BEERS

ABSTRACT
A German research team looked into the bitterness of dry hopped beers. They found that dry hopping causes an increase in IBUs, alpha acids and humulinones, and conversely a reduction of iso-alpha acids. In addition, the correlation between measured IBUs and sensory bitterness was rather poor. And although a degradation of alpha acids and humulinones was observed during storage, the sensory bitterness of the beer was found to be almost unchanged. So there are still a lot of questions to be answered about the bitterness of dry hopped beers.

Brewery news USA, MN: AB InBev’s venture capital arm acquires US largest home-brewing supplier
The venture capital arm of Anheuser-Busch InBev has acquired Roseville-based Northern Brewer, the nation’s largest home-brewing supplier, and its sister company Midwest Supplies, the Star Tribune reported on October 14.

Northern Brewer confirmed the sale on October 14, but executives would not disclose terms of the deal. ZX Ventures is AB InBev’s venture capital business that seeks out disruptive or innovative start-ups.

Christopher Farley started Northern Brewer in St. Paul in 1993 before home-brewing beer had become mainstream. With the rise of microbreweries and specialty beer over the last two decades, Northern Brewer was positioned to capitalize as more and more beer lovers also made their own.

“Our community continues to expand as does the diversity of quality ingredients and equipment available,” Todd Jackson of Northern Brewer said in an e-mail. “Someday we want home-brewing to be as common a household craft in America as gardening or cooking. But we know we won’t get there through complacency.”

The company will maintain its existing leadership and employees. “Our culture will remain as it is today: vibrant, energetic, fair and dedicated to our mission and our customers,” Jackson wrote in the e-mail.

AB InBev finalized its $100 billion acquisition of chief rival SABMiller on October 10. The ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Charlotteville Brewing Company gets Norfolk council’s go-ahead
Norfolk County, Ontario’s reputation as a fully-integrated beer-producing region continues to grow – albeit at an extremely slow rate, Simcoe Reformer reported on October 13.

The latest addition to the trend is the Charlotteville Brewing Company at 1207 Charlotteville West Quarter Line southwest of Simcoe.

This week, Norfolk council gave the go-ahead for owners Melanie Doerksen and Tim Wilson to proceed with a microbrewery with an area of about 2,200 square feet.

They also have the green light for a small restaurant, an outdoor patio, and a space where they can sell beer brewed on-site. The couple is also allowed to host weddings in the picturesque rural location for up to 100 guests.

Doerksen and Wilson introduced themselves to council on October 11 as a professional couple with an interest in environmental issues and wholesome food. They intend to produce organic beer using hops and grains produced on 41-acres of farmland attached to their brewery.

“Our logo is a snail on a hop because we do things slowly,” Wilson told council. “It’s taken us five years to get to this point.”

Wilson is an anatomy professor at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry in London who has also taught in the United States. Doerksen is ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, NS: Nova Scotia’s craft brewers seeing cooperation as the key to their success
Most businesses thrive — or die — in the tough world of competition.

But the burgeoning craft beer industry in Nova Scotia is working on a different model: they see co-operation as the key to their success, CBC.ca reported on October 16.

There are currently 38 craft breweries in the province but like the product, the number is fluid and constantly changing as new licences are issued.

The breweries range from the tiny — one-person operations — to the large, like Propeller and Garrison. In between, there is a huge range of breweries and brew pubs spread around the province and working together, to build an industry that barely existed 20 years ago.

"The level of co-operation is amazing," said Emily Tipton, president of the Craft Brewers Association of Nova Scotia and one of the founders of Boxing Rock Brewing Company in Shelburne.

With 15 full- and part-time employees, it's the largest of the new batch of brewers who've opened up in the last five years, when interest in craft brewing really began to take off.

She said co-operation is in everyone's interest.

"We're working together to create a brand and part of that means none of us should make bad beer."

That level of co-operation ranges from ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Parsons Brewing launches in Ontario’s Prince Edward County
The growing craft brewing scene in Ontario’s Prince Edward County has gained another participant with the opening of Parsons Brewing, Canadian Beer News reported on October 11.

As announced on the brewery’s Facebook page, Parsons opened to the public on Friday October 7th, and is selling growlers of beers including Crushable Pilsner and Farmers Tan Harvest Ale out of its shop at 876 County Road #49 in Picton.

The store opening follows a soft launch in June, with several brands being available on draught at local establishments throughout the summer.

The Parsons Brewing retail store will be open Friday to Sunday from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

Brewery news USA, IN: Four Day Ray Brewing opens its doors in Fishers, Indiana
The craft beer movement is making its way up to Hamilton County. Four Day Ray Brewing held an open house on Sunday, October 16 so people could get a taste, Wish-TV reported on October 17.

They said as much as they want to stand out, they also want to fit in.

“(I) can’t get enough of places like this and they’re popping up everywhere,” said Chris Moody, who attended the open house with her family. “This is great in downtown Fishers, it’s state-of-the-art everything, I can see it as being a major hangout”

The 8,200 square foot brewery and restaurant is located on Lantern Road, just north of 116th Street.

“When pair beer and a great culinary experience together, that’s just going to help bring people together,” said Brian Graham, the owner of Four Day Ray Brewing.

Graham has been brewing beer in his garage for 20 years. He broke ground on Four Day Ray in late January. Eight months later they’re open.

“The food is just a little bit different. It’s just different than what’s up here already and I think Fishers is really primed and ready for something like what we’re doing,” said Graham.

“I think it fits perfectly, kind of fits right in with ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KS: Aero Plains Brewing launches in Wichita
Wichita has another brewery, and this one is in Delano.

Over the weekend, Aero Plains Brewing put on a “soft opening” at its cavernous new tap room at 117 N. Handley, just a block off of West Douglas, Wichita Eagle reported on October 17.

The brewery, which is owned by Lance Minor, Ryan Waite and Brent Miller, will open for its regular hours on October 19, and a grand-opening celebration is planned for Saturday, October 22. The brewery’s hours are 3 to 10 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, 3 p.m. to midnight Fridays, noon to midnight Saturdays and noon to 6 p.m. Sundays.

Aero Plains is opening in an 11,250 square-foot space filled with tables and chairs, and it also has a beer garden set up in its big parking lot. It’s opening with five beers on tap, including a pale ale, a red wheat, a pilsner, a porter and an IPA. There’s also a hard cider on tap.

The soft opening was packed, Miller said, and he’s happy he and his partners chose Delano for the brewery.

“Everyone loves it,” he said. “We’ve had great responses. People are just really excited about the location being Delano.”

Brewery news Zimbabwe: Delta Corporation continues to reel under worsening economic conditions
SABMiller’s associate unit in Zimbabwe, Delta Corporation, continues to reel under worsening economic conditions in the country, with a dollar crunch and weak consumer spending patterns forcing downwards lager beer volumes for the quarter period to the end of September, Independent Online reported on October 18.

Delta will become a unit of an enlarged entity following the merger of SABMiller and Anheuser-Busch InBev. The deal is expected to be finalised this month and the Zimbabwean unit has said that it does not anticipate any material changes from the amalgamation.

It has, however, reeled under the heavy saddle of Zimbabwe’s economy, which has been worsened by a biting cash crunch that is disrupting operations and curbing consumer spending power.

The difficult economy in Zimbabwe has also occasioned a shift in alcohol consumption patterns, with experts saying consumers are now trending their options downwards.

Cash shortages in Zimbabwe have also forced Delta to delay the commissioning of two new plants in Kwekwe and Masvingo as outbound remittances from Zimbabwe take longer to effect.

The company now anticipates that the new plants will start contributing to production before the end of this year.

“The shortages of foreign currency resulted in reduced importation of consumer goods leading to an increase ...More info on site

Grupo Petrópolis, Brazil’s second-largest brewery, has changed its forecast of a decline in sales this year to a single-digit growth thanks to inspiring sales results in the north-east of the country, Reuters reported on October 14.

The company, which is trying to expand its presence across the country by 2020, now expects this year’s sales to grow by 2-3%.

Grupo Petrópolis’ market share last year was 12.94% and reached 14.1% in September this year.

Brewery news Vietnam: Habeco allowed to list on the Unlisted Public Company Market and trade 231.8 mln shares
Giving into the government’s urging, Vietnam’s two leading beer producers Hanoi Beer, Alcohol and Beverage JSC (Habeco) and Saigon Beer, Alcohol and Beverage JSC (Sabeco) have both registered to list their shares on stock exchanges and received approval.

On October 17, the Hanoi Stock Exchange (HNX) allowed Habeco to list on the Unlisted Public Company Market (UPCoM), VietNamNet Bridge reported on October 19.

Habeco, to be coded as BHN on UPCoM, will trade 231.8 million shares.

The fist transaction day and the starting share price will be published in the upcoming days.

In another move, on September 26, the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) approved Sabeco’s proposal to list on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange (HoSE).

Sabeco will have 12 weeks from September 26 to complete its listing on HoSE. Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Do Thang Hai said at the government’s regular press conference on August 31 that the state plans to complete the divestment from Sabeco and Habeco within 16 months.

Hai said that the MoIT had directed the two companies to list their shares on the stock exchanges and draw up their divestment schedules, identifying stages and deadlines.

Hai said that domestic and foreign investors alike can buy the shares. The ...More info on site
