HOPS DO NOT NECESSARILY NEED TO TOUCH BEER FOR DRY HOPPING PURPOSES

ABSTRACT
A German research team that came up with the idea of extracting hop aroma into beer by applying a combined desorption/absorption process. The process-dependent mass transfer was predicted using two different approaches: a thermodynamic approach, and response surface modelling. The methods offer the following advantages: no beer losses, no clarification steps needed, potential reuse of hops for bittering. Using response surface methodology was clearly superior as compared to calculating the mass transfer using thermodynamic approximations.

Klie, R.: Feasibility and Optimization of a Novel Desorption/ Absorption Process for Transferring Hop Volatiles into Beer, poster presentation at the Trends in Brewing Conference, April 2016, Ghent.

Hops news USA: 2016 to be a record year for US hop farmers
The 2016 hop harvest season is upon us and according to the experts, this is going to be a record year, with the total amount of acreage farmers dedicated to hops in 2016 up 17 percent and harvest yields expected to range between average and exceptional. Still, the hop industry looks at the situation with as much caution as they do exuberance, according to information published by Hop Growers of America.

Following last year’s dismally dry growing seasons in both the U.S. and Europe, brewers without hop contracts struggled to get their hands on those precious, popular hop varieties that beer drinkers crave. Hopefully this year’s strong crop helps remedy that situation. As usual, breweries with hop contracts should not be affected either way.

Hop contracts, which are long-term agreements between hop suppliers and breweries, guarantee (in theory at least) that breweries will get all the hops and the particular varieties they need at an established price, protecting breweries from inevitable market fluctuations and helping farmers plan for the future. Among other things, hop contracts help farmers secure the loans needed to expand their hop acreage. Still, in private conversations, some brewers will tell you they feel hogtied and held hostage by ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, MB: Manitoba brewers can’t apply for state support
It's been a year and a half in the making but the first few pints of Torque Brewing Co. beer are being poured into glasses across Winnipeg this week, CBC.ca reported on August 26.

But what the brewers are frothing over is that they were hoping to offer up their suds in their own tap room, but it's not ready yet. Funds from a provincial loan program that was announced in January have yet to materialize.

The newest local craft brewing company sent out their first kegs to local establishments on August 24 and within 24 hours they were already getting reorders.

"It tells us that Winnipeg is ready for another craft brewer," said John Heim, the president of Torque Brewing Co.

The five founders of Torque have been pouring everything into their new venture and when Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries announced a new C$5 million fund in January that would issue loans of up to C$250,000 to local craft brewers and distillers, they were pleased there would be support to tap into.

But Heim says so far his requests have ended up unanswered.

"Ultimately we need to sell our beer to make the money back but the infusion would certainly be a welcomed ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Toxic Brew Company to build a brewery and boost production tenfold
Toxic Brew Company in Dayton’s Oregon District revealed on August 25 it has purchased riverfront land north of downtown to build a brewery and tap room that will boost production tenfold and pave the way for canning and bottling for retail sales, WHIO reported.

The project includes plans for a tap room that will offer visitors a view of the Great Miami River to accompany their brew, founder Shane Juhl told us. The brewery also could host occasional festivals, Juhl said.

The project cost will likely exceed $1 million, Juhl said. That represents a significant investment in Old North Dayton, which has struggled in recent years with vacant industrial and commercial sites.

The 4.3-acre tract at the end of Janney Road is on the east side of the Great Miami River, north of Stanley Avenue and west of Troy Street. The view of the west riverbank includes a railroad trestle and the Great Miami River bike/recreation trail.

“I am excited,” Juhl said while giving a tour of the property to a reporter. “I believe this will be a destination spot where people will come to enjoy a beer while overlooking the Great Miami River.”

Juhl looked at several existing structures before noticing the tract ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Vinton’s first microbrewery, Twin Creeks Brewing Company, set to open in early November
Soon there will be a new place for people to meet for a drink on the weekends or after work in Vinton, as the town’s first brewery will open later this fall. Twin Creeks Brewing Company will give people who live and work in Vinton a place to go close to home and bring in visitors from all across the Roanoke Valley, WSLS reported on August 30.

Owners, Andy and Jason Bisho and Barry Robertson, say this is an idea that both the town and other local breweries have been supporting since the start. Soaring Ridge and Flying Mouse have been helping the brothers every step of the way– from getting started to setting up their brewing equipment. The Town of Vinton has been on board as well. The brewery fits perfectly into the revitalization plan and efforts to get more people to visit.

“We’re hoping it brings a lot more tourism and people to the downtown area,” says Andy. “Vinton already has a lot to offer with the new restaurants, they have the new library and there are a lot of shops downtown. We can complement a nice evening out – people can come get a good craft beer, have dinner ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Third Space Brewing aims at official opening in mid-September
Third Space Brewing brewed its first batch of beer on August 25 at its brand new brewery in Milwaukee's Menomonee Valley.

"We're extremely excited to finally be brewing beer," said Andy Gehl, co-founder and director of sales and marketing.

Gehl tells the Milwaukee Business Journal that the "goal is to open in mid-September." Third Space Brewing is a new craft brewery and taproom at 1505 W. St. Paul Ave.

“Our brand is all about creating a space for people to come," said Gehl. "The beer is first and foremost but we also want to create an experience and bring people into the taproom, and have people meet me and our brewmaster, Kevin Wright, and get to know us.”

Work on the facility is "95 percent done," said Gehl, with everything completed on the brewing side and the taproom just a few weeks away from being ready to be open for business.

The brewery will begin with four types of beers — Happy Place (Midwest Pale Ale), That's Gold! (Golden Kolsch), Upward Spiral (India Pale Ale) and Acres Edge (Toasted Oatmeal Stout), which was the beer brewed Thursday.

Gehl said the brewery plans to distribute to 15 to 30 local bars in addition to its taproom, where ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Crooked Run Brewing to launch its second brewery in Sterling in early 2017
Crooked Run Brewing, a small brewery and tasting room in Leesburg, will open a second ten-barrel brewery and tasting room at 22455 Davis Drive in Sterling in early 2017. The new location will allow Crooked Run to brew bigger batches of its classic beers, to continue developing new styles, and to begin distribution, Brewbound.com reported on August 30.

The brewery first opened its doors in Leesburg’s Market Station In 2013. It was started by 25-year-old Jake Endres and Lee Rogan, at that time the youngest brewery owners in the state of Virginia, with the help of crowd-sourced funds raised through Kickstarter. In the three years since, Crooked Run has gained a following in Leesburg, particularly for their chili IPAs, sours, and Belgian-style ales made with fresh, local ingredients, and has developed a reputation for creativity and experimentation in brewing.

In May 2016, after three years in business, Crooked Run won a gold medal for its saison Supernatural at World Beer Cup, one of the most prestigious beer competitions in the world — a major accomplishment for the tiny three-barrel nanobrewery. In May 2016 Crooked Run was mentioned as “Best Nanobrewery” in the Washington area by the Washington Post.

The new location in Sterling, ...More info on site

A brewery opening soon in Port Dalhousie – a community in St. Catharines, Ontario – has released a pair of beers in advance of its official launch, Canadian Beer News reported on August 23.

Lock Street also has its beer on tap at Acqua in Port Dalhousie, and plans to open its retail store and tasting room in the historic Lion Tavern building on October 1st.

Brewery news Canada, NB: Bogtrotter Craft Brewery set to release its first beers on September 24th
A new home-based nano-brewery in Fredericton is getting set to release its first beers to the public next month, Canadian Beer News reported.

Bogtrotter Craft Brewery has been founded by Rod Croucher, who is brewing on a small system in his garage, prepping batches of three launch beers – Muddy Mayhem IPA, Angry Otter Pub Ale and Osprey Orange Pale Ale.

Croucher said his “goal is to brew small batches of quality beer” that will be available on draught in local restaurants and bars. Based on the response, he hopes to expand in the future to a larger taproom location.

The first beers from Bogtrotter are planned to be released on September 24th.

Brewery news Canada, AB: Prairie Brewing Company to open soon in Three Hills
Alberta beer news site The Daily Beer reports that a new nanobrewery will be launching soon in Three Hills, a small town located 120 km northeast of Calgary.

Prairie Brewing Company has been founded by Ryan Ferguson, Mark Ferguson (no relation) and Darren Kester. The company recently received AGLC approval, and brewing has started on a 1 barrel system.

Prairie will be opening up with three core brands – Prairie IPA, Prairie Brown and Prairie Wit – with availability limited to the local market while on the current small system. The partners hope to move to a 20 barrel system within a year, at which point the brand line-up and distribution is likely to expand.

Brewery news Vietnam: Vietnam urges Habeco and Sabeco brewers to dilute state ownership
Vietnam has urged its major businesses, including the two biggest beer producers Habeco and Sabeco and leading dairy firm Vinamilk, to dilute state ownership. In the private sector, VinaCapital and Shinhan BNP Paribas Asset Management have joined hands to enable Korean investors to participate in the Vietnam market, DEALSTREETASIA reported on August 31.

Vietnam’s new Prime Minister has announced the intention to publicly list the country’s two largest brewers, Sabeco and Habeco, before the state divests its controlling stakes in these businesses, according to a government report.

The move will assure transparency, said the report, which added that there will be no distinction between domestic or international buyers as the state sells stake in the beverage majors.

However, the government portal also clarified that it will retain the local brands of Habeco and Sabeco, along with dairy product firm Vinamilk, the country’s largest company by market capitalization.

DEALSTREETASIA reported earlier that the Vietnamese industry and trade ministry had planned to list Sabeco on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange, after the decision to sell a 53 per cent stake in one tranche, to trim the holding to a minority of 36 per cent.

Barley news UK & China: Chinese market now open to British barley
UK’s cereal growers are on the verge of a "brave new world" as the Chinese market is now open to exports of barley, AHDB Cereals has said.

This year, the Chinese are looking to import seven million tonnes and the UK could have as much as 150,000 tonnes worth £20 million available.

All the necessary permissions are now in place to give the UK access to mainland China which is a massive and growing market.

Though the harvest has not yet finished there will be a surplus which could find a ready home in the Far East as China requires grain from assured sources.

AHDB Head of Crops Export Trade Development, Rob Burns said: “Our export team worked for years to gain access to the market and now we have opened the doors, it is a market that can be developed.

“We are in a strong position as in previous years we have had about a million tonnes of barley available for export each year.”

Demand for barley in China has been growing fuelled by a large and fast-growing beer market while domestic production has, at the same time, been in decline.

Brewery news Thailand: Thai Beverage enjoys frothy rise this year
Amid a largely tepid Singapore bourse, Thai Beverage has stood out with its frothy rise this year, attracting investors with its dominance in Thailand's alcohol market and strong earnings growth, the Straits Times reported on August 29.

And while the counter has cooled slightly recently owing to some profit-taking, market watchers still see ThaiBev as a good buy for the long term, as the company continues to achieve a deeper market share and wider regional presence.

Since the start of the year, ThaiBev has gained 48.2 per cent to 99 cents at the last close, easily the best performer of the 30 Straits Times Index component stocks. The next best was Sats, up 28.5 per cent. Overall, the STI has declined 0.87 per cent so far this year.

ThaiBev's surge - part of a gradual build-up since 2012 and far above the initial public offering price of 28 cents - has defied January's stock market volatility and the Brexit-triggered panic in June.

The company - controlled by Thai billionaire Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi as chairman and his son Thapana as chief executive - is now the fifth largest on the STI, with a market value of S$24.86 billion, behind Singtel, DBS Group Holdings, OCBC and United ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan & South Korea: Japanese beer becoming increasingly popular in South Korea
Japanese beer is becoming increasingly prominent in South Korea, where its popularity is growing mainly among young people due to its deeper flavors and finer beer head than domestic brews, The Youmiuri Shimbun reported on August 29.

Because the main alcoholic drink in South Korea is shochu, a distilled beverage, the overall beer market is not large. However, Japanese beer imports to the country have been continuously increasing and there is significant room for market development due to the drinks’ novelty and good taste.

According to research company Canadean Ltd., the sales volume of beer in South Korea in 2015 was 2.34 million kilolitres — less than half that of Japan. In South Korea, Hite Jinro Co. and Oriental Brewery Co. are the top two beer companies, with a more than 80 percent combined market share.

Imported beer accounts for only about 10 percent of the market. In 2010, Asahi Breweries Ltd. renewed the TV commercials for its major Super Dry brand to promote the beer head and quality of the product, which sells well at restaurants and convenience stores.

Asahi’s sales in 2015 were 2½ times higher than five years before, at 27,000 kilolitres. The company’s more than 20 percent share of the ...More info on site
