Brewery news USA: Antitrust authorities begin in-depth investigation of AB InBev’s takeover of SABMiller
U.S. antitrust officials began an in-depth investigation of Anheuser-Busch InBev NV’s planned takeover of SABMiller Plc, seeking additional information related to the deal, Bloomberg reported on January 14.

The Justice Department’s antitrust division recently issued a so-called second request to the beer maker, according to the company. The inquiry, a move by the Justice Department that was expected by the companies, lengthens the review of how the combination will affect competition and prices for beer.

“As expected with a transaction of this nature, we received a second request for information from the DOJ,” said Marianne Amssoms, a spokeswoman for AB InBev. “We continue to work closely with DOJ to provide them additional information.”

The Justice Department is among competition authorities across the world who must sign off on the $110 billion takeover that combines the world’s biggest brewers. The enlarged company would account for about half the industry’s profit and almost a third of all beer sold worldwide. To resolve antitrust concerns in the U.S., AB InBev, the maker of Budweiser, has agreed to sell SABMiller’s 58 percent stake in MillerCoors to joint-venture partner Molson Coors Brewing Co. By selling that stake, AB InBev says the merger won’t harm competition in the U.S. because ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: New malting barley varieties begin to gain traction among brewers and foreign buyers
A handful of newer malting barley varieties are beginning to gain traction among brewers and foreign buyers of Canadian malt and malting barley, Western Producer reported on January 14.

But as usual, acceptance is slow and it will take time to develop stable, established markets.

For the next two or three years at least, established standbys such as Metcalfe and Copeland will likely remain the most widely produced malting barley varieties in Western Canada.

Peter Watts, executive director of the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre, said foreign interest in newer varieties such as Synergy and Kindersley is building.

“Synergy is one variety that’s on a lot of people’s lips,” said Watts.

“It look like it’s quite well suited for both the adjunct brewing and the craft brewing markets, so it looks very versatile. Kindersley is another one that has some potential.”

Watts told a Jan. 12 CropSphere meeting that exports of Synergy would be greater if more was grown in Canada.

Promotion of newer malting barley varieties is a high priority at the barley research centre.

Newer varieties with superior yield potential, disease resistance packages, agronomic characteristics and brewing attributes have been registered in Canada, but the task of promoting them to large-scale breweries continues to be a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AK: Grace Ridge Brewing finds ideal spot for new home in Homer
Don and Sherry Stead, along with son, Scott, will soon open Grace Ridge Brewing on Ocean Drive in Homer, AK, Homer Tribune reported on January 14.

Originally, the Steads looked for a place to brew in an existing structure, but just couldn’t find the ideal spot. So, when someone mentioned that UPS was moving, Don Stead asked his local UPS driver about the move.

At the driver’s suggestion, Don made contact with builders Harmon and Pauli Hall, and found out what was being done.

“They needed an additional tenant in the new building, and I needed to find a home for our business,” Stead said, adding that it was a good fit with his new landlord. “We were in the right place at the right time.”

“They needed an address for their brewing permits,” Harmon Hall said, adding that 3388 B Street needed another renter after UPS decided it didn’t require all of the space being built.

Grace Ridge Brewing will have a 1,250-square-foot area, with half of that dedicated to the brewing operation where Stead and his son will work. The other half will act as a tasting room, where Sherry will assist people with samples and sell beer to take home.

“She’s a natural,” ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Spiteful Brewing plans to begin brewing at new location by early fall
A few frustrating months into the search for a building to construct a new brewery, Jason Klein, who co-founded Spiteful Brewing three years ago with a childhood hockey buddy, made a phone call.

It was to Gabriel Magliaro, whose Half Acre Beer Co. has become one of Chicago's most popular breweries, but not without a few growing pains — namely, finding the right properties, Chicago Tribune reported on January 13.

Magliaro offered a few tips — be patient, don't settle for less than what you want — and they hung up. Within a few days, Magliaro was back in touch: the building next to Half Acre's production brewery at 2050 W. Balmoral Ave., in the Bowmanville neighborhood, was for rent.

Klein and his partner, Brad Shaffer, checked out the space at 2024 W. Balmoral Ave. They liked it. They wanted it. They confirmed that Magliaro wouldn't mind another brewery moving in next door. When he consented, Spiteful had its new home.

With plans to begin brewing by early fall, Spiteful's new location will put two of the city's upstart brewers — albeit at significantly different points in their trajectories — side-by-side, each pouring beer at neighboring taprooms. (Both aim to open a taproom in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Dry Dock Brewing Company reports very positive results for 2015
In 2015, Dry Dock Brewing Company increased its production by almost 5,000 barrels, filled approximately 3 million cans of its Home Fleet beers, took home two medals from the Great American Beer Festival, and celebrated its 10th anniversary, among many other milestones, Brewbound reported on January 13.

Dry Dock’s South Dock facility brewed more than 1,300 barrels of beer in 2015, while the North Dock production facility brewed 18,000 barrels of Dry Dock and Steamworks Brewing beer (approximately 15,000 barrels of Dry Dock and 3,000 barrels of Steamworks beer). Surpassing the 15,000 barrel mark in 2014 qualified Dry Dock as a Regional Brewery, which according to the Brewers Association is a brewery with an annual beer production of between 15,000 and 6,000,000 barrels.

In 2015, North Dock also canned approximately 3 million cans of its Home Fleet beers: Apricot Blonde, Amber Ale, Hop Abomination IPA, Wheat Beer, and Vanilla Porter.

Dry Dock Brewing Company was the first brewery in Aurora, Colorado that began as a small speakeasy-style bar next door to its sister business, The Brew Hut, at 15120 E. Hampden Avenue. To-date, it’s one of Colorado’s top producing breweries made possible by its second production and canning facility North Dock, the closest ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Revision Brewing poised to become West Sacramento’s fourth microbrewery
West Sacramento is poised to get its fourth microbrewery and tap room, in an operation by one of the founders of Knee Deep Brewing in Auburn, Sacramento Business Journal reported on January 13.

Later this year, Revision Brewing could begin operations in an industrial complex at 825 F St., in the city’s Washington district.

First, though, the West Sacramento City Council will consider a proposal to give Revision a $330,000 loan to get off the ground.

City economic development and housing manager Aaron Laurel said the money would come from an economic development program only open to small cities. West Sacramento officials would loan and administer the funds, which actually stem from a state community development block grant program.

“It’s something we can do now as a small city,” Laurel said, noting West Sacramento’s growth will soon make it ineligible to take part in the program. “For now, it’s a great opportunity for us.”

Revision Brewing would use the loan in two ways. One would be to buy equipment used for brewing, while the other would serve as proof of concept to attract other investors. The agenda item for the loan notes Revision’s partners have also applied for a $400,000 Small Business Administration loan. They ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AL: Cahaba Brewing Co. to open new location on January 19
Cahaba Brewing Co. on January 13 announced it will open its new location on Tuesday, Jan. 19, Birmingham Business Journal reported. The new taproom is located in building C of the Continental Gin campus at 4500 Fifth Ave. S. The taproom will begin serving beers to the public at 1 p.m.

The 2616 3rd Ave. S location will close Friday, Jan. 15 at 11 p.m.

To commemorate the brewery's first location, Cahaba is hosting a “Last Pint Night,” where the public can come and enjoy their last beer at the old taproom.

“We cannot wait to share the new taproom with customers, but want to give those who have been supporters from the beginning a chance to say goodbye to the place where it all started,” said Eric Meyer, head brewer and partner.

Construction at the Continental Gin location began in August 2015.

The new facility includes a 6,000-square-foot taproom with a new AV system including two projectors and multiple TVs, in addition to a 3,000-square-foot covered patio and more parking.

The brewhouse has a 30-barrel system, a high-tech lab for quality control and a 4,000-square-foot barrel and storage space.

Brewery news Canada, AB: Coulee Brew Co. ready to open in Lethbridge on January 16
For many generations, the “House of Lethbridge” brewed a distinctive Pilsner-style beer and shipped it throughout Alberta, Lethbridge Herald reported on January 14.

Today, more than a quarter-century after production ended in the landmark facility downtown, a new Lethbridge brew will soon be on tap for craft beer fans across the province.

Brew kettles, fermenters, aging tanks and all the high-tech equipment that’s required to meet craft beer standards today stands ready in the high-visibility Coulee Brew Co. complex overlooking 43 Street South.

The gleaming all-ages facility, complete with a family restaurant, pub and meeting room, is scheduled to open on January 16. Managing partner Scott Crighton says the first brews will be pitched shortly, and all four selections on the Coulee Brew menu will be available this winter – on tap, and for “growler” off-sale.

Later, a large patio on the protected east side of the structure will bring seating capacity to 370.

A canning line will follow and soon the brewery will also produce a line of soda pop – just as the Lethbridge and Calgary breweries did during Prohibition. And later, he says a micro-distillery will begin to use spent rye from the brewing process to create rye whiskey and vodka.

Brewery news USA, AL: Alabama state commission recommends lawmakers ease sales restrictions on breweries, distilleries and wineries
A state commission tasked with examining Alabama's liquor laws is recommending lawmakers ease sales restrictions on breweries, distilleries and wineries, WTVA reported on January 13.

The Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Study Commission voted on January 12 to present lawmakers with recommendations that include allowing certain licensed brewers to sell up to 288 ounces of beer directly to consumers in bottles, cans or growlers.

The recommendations also call for allowing Alabama wineries to sell their goods at a location approved by the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board and allowing Alabama distilleries to sell up to one 750 milliliter bottle per person, per year for off-premise consumption.

Representatives of Alabama breweries say they're in favor of the recommendations.

Commission Chairman, Sen. Paul Sanford of Huntsville, tells The Montgomery Advertiser that he will work with the Alabama Law Institute to draft proposed legislation.

Brewery news USA, PA: Hitchhiker Brewing Co. to launch new production facility in Pittsburgh
A Mt. Lebanon craft brewer is turning to one of Pittsburgh's busiest neighborhoods for nightlife as a new location for a production facility, Pittsburgh Business Times reported on January 14.

Hitchhiker Brewing Co., which operates a brewpub in Mt. Lebanon, plans to establish a new production facility in a 10,000-square-foot building at 1200 Muriel St. in the South Side Flats, according to the meeting agenda of the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh, which will vote on whether to grant the venture a loan.

Gary Olden, owner and founder of Hitchhiker, offered only limited comment about the plan before a news press conference he’s scheduled to reveal the new expansion venture on January 15.

But he did say he’s generated initial support for the plan from the city and community organizations on the South Side.

According to the URA agenda, the new South Side location will free up space now used for beer production at the 1,250-square-foot Mt. Lebanon operation so it can be dedicated entirely to operating as a retail tap room.

Hitchhiker will move all its beer production to the new South Side facility, where the company will also handle its wholesale distribution.

Located near the South Side Market House, WYEP and the neighborhood's Holiday ...More info on site

Brewery news USA & Brazil: Ambev starts to distribute Craft Brew Alliance’s Hawaiian beers in Brazil
Craft Brew Alliance, Inc. (“CBA”), a leading US craft brewing company, announced on January 13 it is partnering with Ambev, the Brazilian subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch InBev SA, to expand distribution of Kona Brewing Co. beers to Brazil. Ambev began distributing Kona’s award-winning Longboard Island Lager and Big Wave Golden Ale in Brazil in December 2015.

While Brazil is the third largest beer market in the world, both CBA and Ambev see a significant opportunity in tapping into the country’s fast-growing craft beer segment. As Brazil’s leading beverage company, Ambev is uniquely positioned to meet the increasing demand from Brazilian beer drinkers for the distinctive and authentic flavors of American craft beer. Kona Brewing Co. is a top 10 US craft beer brand and the first Hawaiian craft beer distributed in Brazil.

“We’re excited to continue building on our long-standing partnership with AB InBev through forging this pioneering new relationship with Ambev,” said Andy Thomas, Chief Executive Officer, Craft Brew Alliance. “We think the opportunity for Kona in Brazil is massive, especially with the great synergies between Hawaiian and Brazilian culture, with their amazing beaches and strong water lifestyles. This partnership brings together Ambev’s beer expertise with an internationally loved craft beer and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NM: Bernalillo County approves $5 mln in industrial revenue bonds for Rio Bravo Brewing Co.
Bernalillo County's Board of Commissioners approved $20 million in industrial revenue bonds during its Jan. 12 meeting for two business expansions— Los Poblanos and Rio Bravo Brewing Co., Albuquerque Business First reported.

Industrial revenue bonds, or IRBs, are tax incentives used by governments to encourage the development of new facilities and spur job growth. The dollar amount refers to how much a business will invest, not how much the government will actually spend on tax incentives.

The $20 million in IRBs is expected to create 55 new jobs between the two businesses.

Rio Bravo Brewing Co. will utilize $5 million in industrial revenue bonds to create a canning and bottling line at its brewery, 1912 2nd St. NW.

The industrial revenue bond through Bernalillo County is the first one awarded to a brewery.

It will also allow the company to purchase additional equipment, build a loading dock, buy distribution trucks and a 50,000-pound grain silo.

Brewery news UK: Survey shows love for fizzy lager is falling in the UK
Britain's love for fizzy lager is falling as a frothy ale in a pint jug becomes more popular, Western Daily Press reported on January 14 a new survey.

And the numbers opting to sup from a jug is on the rise.

The top choice of glass preferred to sup from in a pub is the nonic or a straight glass with a bulge near the head with over a quarter of drinkers.

Brewery news South Sudan: SABMiller to close brewing operations in South Sudan by mid-February
SABMiller Plc will close its brewing operations in South Sudan, the only beer factory in the world’s youngest country, by mid-February as a foreign-currency shortage curtails its ability to import raw materials, Bloomberg reported on January 14.

The company will cut as many as 176 jobs by the end of March, said Carlos Gomes, the managing director of South Sudan Beverages Ltd. The brewer has failed to make a profit in the war-torn country since setting up the nation’s first brewery in 2009, he said in an interview in October.

South Sudan devalued its currency by 84 percent last month in favor of a floating regime when it adopted the parallel market’s rate of 18.5 pounds per dollar from a previous fixed rate of 2.96.

“We have for many months not had access to any significant amount of forex,” Gomes said in response to e-mailed questions. “We had large South Sudan pound deposits in the bank at the time the devaluation was announced. The end result is that we incurred a loss of tens of millions of dollars, placing SSBL in an even worse position than it was.”

SABMiller, which is being acquired by Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world’s biggest brewer, began producing brands including ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Three major brewers reveal wholesale beer price rises for 2016
Three major UK brewers have revealed their wholesale beer price rises for 2016 in a move likely to anger many licensees, MorningAdvertiser reported on January 14.

Molson Coors will raise the wholesale selling price on the majority of its draught products by approximately 3.5p per pint and Heineken by an average of 2% or 2.5p. Diageo will increase the price of a 50L keg of Guinness by 4% from the end of this month.

However, Greene King confirmed that it would freeze prices for the third year running on its own brewed products as part of an ongoing campaign to support the trade.

Several leading operators have hit out against beer price hikes, arguing they are unnecessary as inflation is low and ingredients and delivery costs are falling.

However, representatives from Molson Coors, Diageo and Heineken said that a need for investment was behind the higher prices and stressed that the increase had been kept to the ‘minimum level’.

A Heineken spokesperson said the average increase was down on last year’s average of 4%, adding: “We always seek to absorb as much as we can before passing on increases to our trade customers. Our increase also reflects the very comprehensive investment programme we continue to ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: AB InBev starts trading on Johannesburg Stock Exchange
The world’s biggest brewer, Anheuser-Busch InBev NV, began trading on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange on January 15, the latest in a string of multinational heavyweights to complete a secondary listing in South Africa, strengthening the local bourse even as the broader economy continues to decelerate, the Wall Street Journal reported.

AB InBev began trading at 1,938 South African rand ($118) a share—giving it a market value of 3.1 trillion rand ($188 billion)—or nearly double the value of British American Tobacco PLC, until January 15 the biggest company on the JSE. Mega-brewer AB InBev’s listing is the most recent step in its more than $100 billion quest to acquire SABMiller PLC, which has its ancestral home in South Africa.

SABMiller is now the exchange’s third-largest company by market capitalization, and local investors had expressed concerns that an acquisition by AB InBev could mean losing access to a major beer company and leaving them with fewer options for tapping global growth through the JSE. The secondary listing is AB InBev’s solution to that problem.

South African regulators allow pension funds to invest just a quarter of their assets offshore. The remaining three-quarters have to be invested in South African-listed companies, a designation for which AB ...More info on site
