Brewery news USA, OR: RiverBend Brewing close to capacity limit but not planning expansion soon
Gary Sobala’s end game has been decades in the making. A lifelong restaurateur and now the CEO of RiverBend Brewing Co., Sobala looks forward to someday handing off management of the brewery and nearby brewpub on NE Division Street, in Bend, to managers to run and potentially grow, Bend Bulletin reported on August 3.

Running a successful brewery and brewpub, which are separate business entities, was a personal dream on which Sobala said he staked the couple’s life savings.

“We felt we could enter the market and do OK,” he said on July 31. “And it’s kinda my baby, my idea, and we took it and ran with it and tried to make it successful, and it seems to be going that way.”

The brewery occupies the western 2,600 square feet of that building today. In the meantime, Sobala took over Rivals, a sports bar, from its owners. In 2013 he transformed Rivals into RiverBend Brewing Sports Pub and started serving beer from the brewery 150 feet away.

Since then, beer production has steadily increased. In January, it sold just over 23 taxable barrels in Oregon and in May nearly 40 barrels, according to Oregon Liquor Control Commission beer reports. The brewery is close ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Craft beer industry thrives in B.C. due to provincial support
B.C. loves craft beer, and thanks to the seemingly unending thirst British Columbians have for quality brews, the province’s craft beer market is flourishing, Vancity Buzz reported on July 31.

On April 1, 2015 changes to the Liquor Policy Review removed some of the barriers keeping small-scale breweries from growing with their demand. The changes included allowing brewers to sell their products at places like farmers’ markets, or secondary tasting rooms. It also allowed a more gradual increase to mark-up rates for beer production, allowing smaller operations to produce the amount of product necessary to support and sustain their businesses.

These changes have made a definite impact. Since April 1, B.C. Liquor Stores have reported a 50% increase in craft beer sales from small-scale breweries, compared to this time last year. Sales from medium-scale saw 19% increase. In fact craft beer sales in B.C. have almost tripled in the last five years.

The process of acquiring a license for a brewery was also streamlined and simplified in the Liquor Policy Review. In 2015 alone, 12 new breweries have received their license to brew beer in B.C.

Brewery news USA, CO: Odd13 Brewing announces $400,000 expansion in Lafayette by mid October
Two years after opening their doors, the owners of Odd13 Brewing are expanding into a new 3,800-square-foot production site a mile and a half away, but are keeping their downtown taproom location, BizWest Media reported on August 4.

Ryan Scott, who co-founded the brewery with his wife, Kristin, said the plan is to move production and packaging to the new site, while maintaining a smaller-scale production operation at the 301 E. Simpson St. location in Lafayette, where the brewery can experiment with new beers.

The new site is at 505 Stacy Court in Lafayette, just a couple of blocks southeast of the intersection of South Boulder Road and U.S. Highway 287. Construction is already under way on the $400,000 expansion, and Scott said he’s hoping to have the new facility producing by mid October. A taproom could become part of the new site eventually but isn’t in the near-term plans.

In addition to the 3,800 square feet leased, Odd 13 Brewing has first right of refusal on other units in the 11,000-square-foot building at 505 Stacy if other tenants leave in the future.

“We chose the building with future growth in mind,” Scott said.

For now, the new digs should provide plenty of extra capacity. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL & CA: Lagunitas Brewing Company explores selling of an equity stake
Lagunitas Brewing Company is working with Wells Fargo & Co to explore strategic options, including the sale of an equity stake, in a deal that could value the company at around $450 million, people familiar with the matter said, Reuters reported on August 4.

The Petaluma, California-based brewer is one of the best-known and fastest-growing brands in an industry in which young consumers are spurning traditional, well established beer names in favour of new, independent ones.

Lagunitas Brewing has been exploring strategic alternatives for several months, as its chief executive Tony Magee, who founded the company in 1993, seeks to expand his business.

A joint venture is also a possibility being explored, some of the people said. There is no certainty that any deal will materialize, the people added.

The sources asked not to be identified because the deliberations are confidential. Lagunitas Brewing and Wells Fargo declined to comment.

Lagunitas' Brewing’s most well known label is its India Pale Ale, a trendy bitter beer. It also makes a smoother pale wheat ale, Lil Sumpin' Sumpin'. The company has breweries in Petaluma, California and Chicago, with one more planned in Los Angeles.

The popularity of its brands, known for the large fonts on its labels, has helped ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Maize Valley to expand production
Maize Valley Winery, located just outside Hartville, is abandoning its half-barrel brewing system and investing in a 15-barrel Deutsche Beverage brewhouse. The new system is expected to arrive in November or December, and be pumping out beer either at the end of this year or beginning of next year, Akron Beacon Journal reported on August 3.

“We just can’t keep up with production,” owner Bill Bakan said. “We’re constantly running out of beer here.”

Maize Valley launched its brewery last year, intentionally starting out small to see if the demand was there.

“The brewery has eight draft handles, but during the heavier summer months, there are only about five beers on draft because more visitors are drinking more beer,” Bakan said. They even tried to bump up production to have some beer in reserve but “darn it, wouldn’t you know that people bought more,” Bakan said.

Maize Valley saw a 30 percent increase in customers last fall – an increase that Bakan attributes partly to providing beer. The winery-brewery also hosts many well-attended fall events, including a corn maze and hot air balloon launch. As Bakan put it, Maize Valley is “no longer a rinky dink roadside stand.”

The larger system will allow Maize Valley ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AL: Green Bus Brewing to launch brewhouse in Huntsville in December
Jason Sledd's home brewing days started modestly in the late '90s with a Mr. Beer kit purchased from a local department store.

Sixteen years later, the 41-year-old cable technician and father of two is moving forward with his dream to open a nanobrewery and taproom in Huntsville.

Jason Sledd, along with business partners Carey Huff and Jeff Sanders, is launching Green Bus Brewing in a former lawyer's office on 206 Eustis Ave. in downtown Huntsville. Sledd hopes to open in December, but it may be January or February before the 1.5-barrel brewhouse is operational, AL.com reported on August 4.

Unlike some of Huntsville's other top breweries, Green Bus Brewing won't distribute products to stores, restaurants and bars through a wholesaler.

"We want to be a true neighbourhood nanobrewery and feel that downtown Huntsville is the perfect location for us," Sledd said.

The 150-year-old building, which will span nearly 2,300 square feet, will undergo a complete overhaul over the next few months as Green Bus Brewing.

"It adds another important piece to the innovative and creative culture in the city centre," Emerson said.

Sledd, Huff and Sanders are investing $100,000 in the small operation, which will start with eight craft brews and operate inside the Quigley Arts & ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Jack's Abby Brewing to expand in Framingham by the end of September
When Jack's Abby Brewing opened in 2011, the Hendler brothers set up in a 4,500-square-foot warehouse on Morton Street in Framingham, MetroWest Daily News reported on August 3.

But soon, Jack, Eric and Sam Hendler's lager-only brewery will be opening in its new location at the Avery Dennison Building, 100 Clinton St., Framingham, in a 67,000-square-space that will feature a retail area and a large, state-of-the-art brewery. "We really did it kind of piecemeal at our current spot," said Jack Hendler, co-founder and brewmaster. "Here, we're doing everything at once."

Jack's Abby Brewing announced in December that it would be expanding, and Hendler said everything is still on schedule. The 5,000-square-foot restaurant, called the Jack's Abby Beer Hall, is scheduled to open in mid- to late-September, Hendler added.

The brewery will be much larger than what they currently have. This year, Jack's Abby Brewing will brew 20,000 barrels of beer. A barrel of beer equals 31 gallons. The new brewery will open with a capacity of 45,000 to 50,000 barrels of beer, but the building has the infrastructure to handle up to 150,000 barrels of beer a year. The only brewery in Massachusetts that brews more than 150,000 barrels a year is the Harpoon ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MD: Rubber Soul Brewing Company opens in Salisbury on July 4
Rubber Soul Brewing Company opened July 4 in Salisbury, Maryland. It is co-owned by Jesse Prall, a Steelton native, who worked for 10 years at Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in Delaware, PennLive.com reported on August 4.

Prall is joined in the project by five partners, all mostly childhood friends from Steelton including Jon Sullivan, Beau Faulkner, Frank Hrestak and Corey Deibler.

The 2,400-square-foot open brewery combines a brewing facility, a tasting room and small retail area.

The brewery is named after Prall's love of cycling. "The soul of the bike meets the ground and gets you were you are going," Prall said. It is also the name of a Beatles album.

Rubber Soul Brewing's signature Other Woman Blonde Ale, Pogo Double IPA or Urban Style Honey IPA fill six to eight taps. Growlers and crowlers also are available for purchase and fill ups.

The project took nearly two years to develop.

"In the brewing industry I think everybody brewing has that dream of opening a brewery," said Prall, a Bishop McDevitt graduate.

For a decade Prall worked at Dogfish Head Brewing under craft beer superstar Sam Calagione after a stint as head brewer at Appalachian Brewing Company in Harrisburg.

The experience, Prall said gave him the confidence to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: West Shore Brewing and 12 Gates Brewing to open in Erie County by the end of the year
12 Gates Brewing Co. is readying an 8,000-square-foot facility at 80 Earhart Drive in Williamsville in hopes of opening to the public this fall, Buffalo News reported on July 31.

The brewery will have a 2,000-square-foot tap room where it will serve its beer. It will seat 99 people.

When 12 Gates Brewing launches the facility will be capable of producing 12,000 barrels per year. 12 Gates Brewing expects to take three years to scale up to that quantity of demand. But the operation is configured in such a way that an additional 6,000-barrel capacity could be added with relatively short notice.

“We want to make a lot of great beer for a lot of people,” said Bill Campbell, one of the 10 partners behind the brewery. “We want people to be able to find this on tap in every bar in Buffalo.”

12 Gates Brewing Co. has six products on its roster: West Coast IPA, which is made with grapefruit peel and has notes of citrus; New Zealand IPA, with lime, tangelo and stonefruit flavours; Session IPA, which is described as a “day drinking” beer and has earthy notes along with lime, orange and orchard notes; Espresso Porter, which uses cold-brewed, micro-roasted coffee ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, LA: Ouachita Brewing Co., Cotton Port Brewing, and Flying Tiger Brewery to launch in northeast Louisiana within a year
Within a year, northeastern Louisiana is slated to be home to Ouachita Brewing Co., Cotton Port Brewing, and Flying Tiger Brewery, Washington Times reported on August 1.

Ouachita Brewing Co., Cotton Port Brewing, and Flying Tiger Brewery each plan a different approach to business, and each are in different stages of readiness to open. All are still in the permitting process with The Louisiana Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control and not yet open.

“Anything can affect that,” Heath Lord, founder of Ouachita Brewing Co., said. “It’s kind of like the IRS. They’re involved, and it is what it is, and you leave it alone. You really want to make sure that you support the ATC and the TTB (Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau) as much as you can because their jobs are hard enough. We want to make sure that we can appreciate the work that they put into this to keep industry standards protected.”

So far, seven men in northeastern Louisiana have decided to leverage a passion for home brewing into a business, and they bring a range of experience to the task.

“Who doesn’t want to turn a hobby that they’re passionate about into their full-time job and be ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: New craft brewery to open in Arlington this fall
There was speculation in March that Metropole, a brewing company started by Arlington local Mike Katrivanos, might be opening its first facility at 2709 S. Oakland Street in Arlington, near the Shirlington dog park and the W&OD Trail. Those suspicions were confirmed via a post on the business’s Facebook page on August 3, ARL now reported on August 4.

“Arlington’s first package brewery since 1916 is coming to your community!” said the post. “Time and time again, Arlington County is featured as one of the best places to live in the United States. Help make Arlington an even better place to live by supporting your local brewery.”

Steve Katrivanos — Mike’s brother — said he anticipates the brewery, which will include a tasting room, will open this fall. In addition to on-premises sales, the brewery will sell its beer to local retailers.

“This started as my brother’s dream seven years ago, and he worked with Arlington for two years to make it a reality,” said Katrivanos. “We’re almost at the finish line now.”

Katrivanos described the company as a craft brewery that strives to use locally-sourced and quality imported ingredients. In the past, Metropole has used Virginia honeysuckle to make their beer, and Katrivanos ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MD: True Respite Brewing Company to open in Bethesda by 2017
A nearly 10,000-square-foot brewery and taproom could be coming to Bethesda, BethesdaMagazine.com reported on August 4.

The idea is to make it into a large community gathering space that hosts events, large groups and serves as a place for friends to gather and sip brews.

The three founders say they need a small change in state law to allow them to sell beer to-go near a church.

The founders, Brendan and Bailey O’Leary and Evan Partridge, said on August 4 they’ve found an ideal location, but due to its close proximity to a church in downtown Bethesda they haven’t signed the lease yet.

To fix this, they’re working on legislation with county officials to have a bill submitted in the General Assembly next year that would change the distance requirements that prohibit beer sales within 300 feet of a church. The change would allow them to sell growlers and 6-packs to-go at the brewery.

Despite the real estate obstacle, the founders say they’ve settled on Bethesda as the spot for True Respite Brewing Company and hope to open it by 2017. Brendan’s parents live in Loudon County, which is where the co-founders first thought to establish a brewery, but after finding out about updates ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Black Hammer Brewing to open in San Francisco on August 14
San Francisco has been a hotspot for craft brewery openings. Black Hammer Brewing will be joining the slew of neighbourhood breweries. Founder Jim Furman is targeting an August 14th opening in the former Tin Shing Printing space at 544 Bryant in San Francisco, Hoodline reported on August 4.

"San Francisco not only has a huge craft beer culture and a growing population of younger professionals that crave craft beer and want to drink it at the source, but it's also the best city in the world to live in, hands down," said Jim Furman the brewmaster. "We are seriously in love with San Francisco, and can't wait to give back."

Black Hammer Brewing's primary focus are English ales and German lagers, according to Furman. In a counterpoint to the hop-crazed culture of many craft breweries, he's aiming to create malt-forward beers "where your palate is not wrecked, it's enhanced."

Other beers on tap include Jaded Raver (an English bitter), Marteau Blanc et Bleu (a blueberry wit), and a kolsch.

Furman originally founded the brewery in July 2012 as Hammer Brewing Company, but found out last year that he wouldn't be able to trademark the name without amending it. "I added 'Black' as ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TN: Blackhorse Pub & Brewery thinking about opening new location in Knoxville
Blackhorse Pub & Brewery just marked its second anniversary at Western Plaza in Clarksville, but is already dealing with growing pains that have the owners mulling the possibility of a move, Knoxville News Sentinel reported on July 31.

The pub and brewery posted a message on its Facebook page on July 22 hinting at the possibility.

"We had some new tanks come in today to help brew more beer," the message read. "Blackhorse Pub & Brewery may be looking for a new spot in Knoxville. We love the city and our customers but we have to be able to grow."

Contacted by the News Sentinel several times, co-owner Jeff Robinson was reluctant to talk about the situation, but did release a statement on July 31.

"Blackhorse Pub & Brewery just had its 2nd anniversary in our return to Western Plaza and Knoxville," Robinson said in an email. "We are glad to be back. The beer brewing and distribution side of our business is expanding rapidly.

"We have to make some decisions in the near future regarding how we can accommodate that growth. We have to decide if it is even feasible to add more brewing capacity to our current location. Or can we add brewing ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KY: Country Boy Brewing to expand to Georgetown
A rapidly growing brewing company that got its start in Kentucky in 2012 has decided to expand in its home state. Gov. Steve Beshear on August 3 announced Country Boy Brewing is expanding to Georgetown, its second Kentucky location, LEX18 Lexington KY News reported on August 3.

Lexington-based Country Boy Brewing, which produces expertly brewed craft beer, will create 20 jobs and invest nearly $4.4 million into the project.

“I’m proud of the success Country Boy Brewing has enjoyed over the past three years,” said Gov. Beshear. ”I’m even more proud that the company has grown to the point that it is ready to expand and that it has elected to remain in Kentucky to do so.”

The company will be moving into a larger brew house in Georgetown with a higher fermentation capacity. With the upgrade in space, Country Boy Brewing will now be able to produce 10,000 barrels of craft beer annually. Increased production will allow the company to begin distribution in additional states.

“We are extremely excited to expand to Scott County and Georgetown,” said Daniel Harrison, co-founder of Country Boy Brewing. “I am a life-long Scott Countian, and it has always been my dream to have a facility there. We ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Red Stripe beer accused of misleading consumers about where it is brewed
Red Stripe is the latest beer to face the wrath of US consumers who say they're being duped, Fox News reported on August 4.

Two people have filed a suit in federal court in San Diego against liquor giant Diageo, makers of the beer, alleging that the company wilfully misleads customers into thinking Red Stripe beer is brewed in Jamaica.

The suit alleges that Diageo uses deceptive phrasing like calling the brew a “Jamaican Style Lager” and that the brown bottle says it contains the “taste of Jamaica.” The suit alleges that the shorter, squat packaging is misleading because it so closely mirrors that of typical Jamaican beer bottles.

In 2012, Diageo moved production of Red Stripe bound for the U.S. from Kingston, Jamaica to Latrobe, Penn. Current packaging states that the product is "Brewed & Bottled by Red Stripe Beer Company, Latrobe, PA."

Robbins Arroyo, the San Diego law firm representing the plaintiffs, claim that the label's white text stating that is “obscure” and “not easily noticed by consumers.”

The suit also accuses Diageo of selling Red Stripe at prices substantially higher than most domestic beers, even though it is brewed in the U.S. and uses only domestic ingredients.

This latest complaint comes after Anheuser-Busch ...More info on site

Brewery news Singapore & Myanmar: Myanmar Breweries two stakeholders preparing to face off in court
A long-drawn battle over Myanmar Breweries (MBL) is coming to a head, with both stakeholders preparing to face off in court, The Straits Times reported on August 1.

Myanma Economic Holdings (MEHL) asked the Singapore High Court on July 29 to force the sale of a 55 per cent stake in the brewer held by Fraser and Neave (F&N) to be completed by Aug 20.

MEHL has also filed an application for an interim injunction requiring F&N, its joint venture partner in the firm, to sell its stake for 500 billion kyat (S$540 million).

F&N is refusing to budge from its earlier position that any sale of the stake should be completed at the estimated fair value of US$560 million (S$770 million).

It insisted that the sum was determined by the jointly appointed independent valuer.

"It is our position that by choosing to refuse to complete the sale at US$560 million, MEHL has... breached its obligations," F&N said on July 31 in a filing to the Singapore Exchange (SGX).

The exchange rate to be used for the deal has been a sore point between the joint venture partners.

While F&N says the 2013 US dollar/Myanmar kyat exchange rate must be used, MEHL has demanded that the deal ...More info on site

Brewery news South Sudan: SABMiller may be forced to halt operations in South Sudan
SABMiller Plc may be forced to halt operations in South Sudan unless it’s able to access foreign currency and fuel needed to run the business, Bloomberg reported on August 1.

“If we don’t get access to raw materials and the lack of hard currency continues, we may do so, but we are saying not now or in the near future,” George Nisbet, finance director at Southern Sudan Beverages Ltd., of SSBL, said by phone Saturday from the capital, Juba.

Fighting between government and rebel forces that erupted in South Sudan in December 2013 has left tens of thousands of people dead and more than 2 million displaced, according to the United Nations. President Salva Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar have failed to reach an agreement on ending the conflict despite months of negotiations.

SABMiller, the world’s second-biggest brewer, built the first brewery in South Sudan. The manufacturing began producing brands including White Bull and Nile Special in 2009. Africa accounts for about 31 percent of total revenue, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

SSBL is scaling back operations and sending some staff on leave as it tries to deal with the shortages, Managing Director Carlos Gomez told reporters during a tour of the ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Viiking Ventures acquires Goa-based King Beer brand
Viiking Ventures, part of actor-producer Sachiin Joshi's JMJ Group, has acquired Goa-based beer brand Kings Beer from Impala Distillery and Brewery for Rs 90 crore, a top company executive was quoted as saying by The Economic Times on August 4.

Post the acquisition, the brand has also been launched in Mumbai.

Viiking already has its own vodka brand and is also working on launching a wine and scotch brand. "We are creating our own brand and will get it produced by the existing manufacturing outlets in the market rather than manufacturing it ourselves," Joshi said.

He added that he is also looking to acquire a vineyard in France or Italy with an investment of $20-40 million.

Founded in 2012, Viiking Ventures has presence in sectors like FMCG, hospitality, entertainment, realty, infrastructure, paper products and philanthropic activities.
