Hops news USA, WA: Impressive growth in production of craft beer leads to an increase in consumption of hops
These are good times for farmers who grow hops. The beer-flavouring plant is in short supply because of the dramatic increase in the popularity of craft breweries, Newser reported on June 12.

That has growers in the Yakima Valley - which produces 75 percent of the nation's hops - rushing to expand their production.

In Washington, acreage grew more than 6 percent in 2014 from the year before and is projected to rise 10 percent this year. Prices are also climbing.

Craft beers typically use four to five times more hops than blander mass-produced beers.

Brewery news USA, PA: Guild Hall Brewing Co. to open in Jenkintown on June 19
Downtown Jenkintown gets its own brewpub on June 19 with the opening of Guild Hall Brewing Co., Philly.com reported on June 10.

Owen Hutchins, a longtime brewer who in 1997 became the first head brewer at the former General Lafayette Inn in Lafayette Hill, owns Guild Hall Brewing Co. Hutchins started the project nearly two years ago. Only after he bought the building for Guild Hall Brewing did Woori America Bank step in with an SBA loan.

Metcalfe Architecture & Design installed a seven-barrel brew house with five fermenters and six serving tanks.

Brewery news USA, MN: Tin Whiskers Brewery to expand its brewing capacity in July
On the eve of its one-year anniversary, Tin Whiskers Brewing Company in downtown St. Paul has announced it will more than double its brewing capacity in July, TwinCities.com-Pioneer Press reported on June 10.

"We've exceeded all of our expectations for the first year," co-founder and brewery president Jeff Moriarty said in a news release.

The expansion also will include a larger pilot brewing system to accommodate more experimentation.

Brewery news USA, AL: Band of Brothers Brewing Co. to become Tuscaloosa's third beer crafter since 2012
Band of Brothers Brewing Co. will be the third brewery to open its doors in Tuscaloosa since 2012, Alabama's News Leader reported on June 12.

The owners of this brewery have a special bond, they are brothers. They are turning their love for brewing beer into something they can share with others.

"It’s always been a hobby more or less, before things started changing with craft beer. It’s something that we did off and on but as things started to change we got more involved into it until we decided to make the ultimate step to start a brewery," Co-Owner of Band of Brothers Brewing Co., Jeremy Donald, said.

Donald said a lot of what they have learned came from their grand-father and working with fellow breweries, like Druid City Brewing Company.

"I think they're going to bring a different dynamic to what's going on here and I think it's going to do nothing but help the beer culture in Tuscaloosa so I'm really excited to see them come from helping us here to having their own facility," said Co-Owner of Druid City, Bo Hicks.

"We're a small group of guys and we support each other a lot. Any help that ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Vijay Mallya’s voting rights in United Breweries shrink to just 0.06%
Unit Trust of India Investment Advisory Services (UTI-IAS) has acquired Vijay Mallya’s 3.97% voting rights on pledged shares in United Breweries (UBL) following a default. Hence, Mallya’s voting rights in the company have shrunk to just 0.06%, The Financial Express reported on June 11.

United Breweries in its filing to the BSE stated, “Unit Trust of India Investment Advisory Services in their capacity as the security trustee in relation to term loans secured by a pledge over 1.04 crore shares of the company, have acquired voting rights in relation to the pledged shares upon notification of occurrence of an event of default.”

The disclosure comes at a time when Mallya is facing problems in most companies wherein he owns stakes, including United Spirits (USL). USL has received notices from the ministry of corporate affairs and the I-T Department for an inspection of its accounts and other books.

Diageo-led USL had asked Mallya last month to step down as chairman of the firm, after an internal inquiry report into certain doubtful receivables, advances and deposits revealed that funds were diverted from the company to UB Group companies, including Kingfisher Airlines. The inquiry, ordered by the board last September into certain transactions between 2010 and ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Distribution of Staropramen beer to pass from Carlsberg to Molson Coors
Czech pilsner Staropramen is moving its UK distribution from Carlsberg to Molson Coors. The brewer, which also supplies Grolsch and Cobra, will have exclusive rights to the brand in the UK from December 28, Offlicence News reported on June 11.

Molson Coors bought Staropramen’s parent company Starbev in 2012 and is focusing on the growing world beer category in the UK.

Marketing director Martin Coyle said: “We have seen growth in the Staropramen brand throughout our European business and around the world and there is a continued appetite for world and premium beers in the UK.

“By bringing the Staropramen brand into the Molson Coors UK portfolio we are able to provide our customers with a more comprehensive and premium drink offer that we hope will delight the UK’s beer drinkers.”

Carlsberg is going to centre its world beer strategy around San Miguel.

Chief executive James Lousada said: “We are proud of the performance we have delivered on the Staropramen brand since we secured the licence four years ago but it represents a very small proportion of our overall sales. Our priority in the world beer category is San Miguel, which has seen a phenomenal volume growth of 105% over the past five ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: AB InBev and Lion sign agreement on exclusive distribution of Corona Extra in Australia
Anheuser-Busch InBev and Lion have re-signed a new agreement which will see Lion exclusively distribute Corona Extra in Australia, TheShout reported on June 12.

Lion Australia managing director James Brindley said that he was looking forward to continuing to market and distribute the popular beer as part of Lion’s portfolio in Australia.

"Corona is a favourite beer for many adult Australians and we are excited that this much-loved brand will continue to be part of Lion’s portfolio of great brands."

A spokesperson for Lion said the deal was for "several years" and that this agreement was only for Corona Extra. The deal to distribute Corona's sister brands is still in place and will continue.

Lion initially signed the deal to distribute Corona in 2012, with Brindley telling TheShout at the time, that Lion was not just warming the seat for Coca-Cola Amatil.
