Brewery news Kenya: In addition to new brewery launch Keroche Breweries plans to list on local stock exchange
Keroche Breweries Ltd., a Kenyan beer-maker, is expanding its production capacity by more than 10-fold and plans to list on the local stock exchange in the next five years, Chief Executive Officer Tabitha Karanja said.

The company at the end of March will open a new plant at its location in the central town of Naivasha that will increase its output volume to 110 million liters of beer a year from 10 million liters, Karanja said in an interview. It received a 5-billion shilling ($55-million) loan from Barclays Bank Kenya Ltd. to help finance the work, which Keroche will pay off by 2020 and then the company plans to start trading shares on the Nairobi Securities Exchange, she said on February 25.

Kenyan beer drinkers are drawn to Keroche’s products because they are “affordable and natural,” she said.

The brewer wants to increase its market share to 20 percent from 5 percent, said Karanja, making inroads against Diageo Plc’s East African Breweries Ltd., which controls almost the rest of the Kenyan beer market and half the spirits business. The industry is becoming more competitive with Keroche and others companies growing their presence, posing a threat to EABL’s revenue growth even as demand rises ...More info on site

Brewery news Sri Lanka: Distilleries Corporation of Sri Lanka to expand market share owing to new large monthly tax which will deter new industry players
Sri Lanka’s market leader in alcoholic beverage production, Distilleries Corporation of Sri Lanka (DIST) would be able to expand its market share due to the large monthly tax imposed on liquor manufactures which ultimately discourages new players and smaller players, a rating agency said.

Sri Lanka's new administration proposed a 200 million rupees monthly tax on all producers, regardless of their size, in the interim budget for 2015, Lanka Business Online reported on February 27.

“The government's plans to impose a minimum tax of LKR200 mln per month on liquor manufacturers will deter new players and adversely impact the profitability of smaller players,” Fitch Ratings said in a statement.

“This is likely to allow the larger producers such as DIST to gain market share.”

Fitch said, DIST accounted for 53 percent of Sri Lanka's total alcoholic beverage production and 79 percent of the country's total arrack production.

DIST's arrack production accounts for over 95 percent of its volumes.

Government measures including increases in public-sector salaries and allowances, and reductions in the prices of essential goods, fuel and electricity are likely to increase real disposable income, which would lead to an uptick in spirit consumption, Fitch said.

However economic analysts says killing competition and expanding monopoly power are ...More info on site
