Alternatives to ICE-3

ABSTRACT
The current HPLC calibration standard for measuring alpha acids and beta acids in hops and hop products is the International Calibration Extract, third formulation (ICE-3), derived from a de-oiled CO2 hop extract. Laboratories that use ICE-3 must warm and mix the calibration extract to ensure that it is homogenous prior to use. As an alternative, this article offers a standard that uses the crystalline complexes of dicyclohexylamine-alpha acids and dicyclohexylamine-beta acids which are more stable than ICE-3. Because these crystalline salts are homogeneous and readily dissolve in methanol, they are also easier to use than ICE-3.

Brewery news USA: Danish beer maker Mikkel Borg Bjergsø and AleSmith Brewing to set up a joint venture
Danish beer maker Mikkel Borg Bjergsø is planning to establish a joint venture (JV) with US-based AleSmith Brewing, Drinks Business Review reported on February 20.

Expected to be launched in June, the proposed JV, along with AleSmith's existing brewery, will produce Mikkeller branded beers.

Bjergsø and AleSmith owner Peter Zien will both own certain stake in the JV, which will be capable of producing 15,000 barrels of beer annually, with plans to increase capacity over the future.

However, the amount of stake to be owned by the partners is not revealed.

Commenting on the JV, Bjergsø was quoted by U-T San Diego as saying that establishing an American outpost will help alleviate some of the troubles associated with shipping beers from Europe to the US.

Meanwhile, Bjergsø is also planning to open a new brewpub WarPigs in Denmark, under a partnership with 3 Floyds Brewing.

Brewery news USA, AL: Cahaba Brewing Co. moving to a larger location
Birmingham, Alabama-based Cahaba Brewing Co. continues to grow in popularity and on February 18 announced it would move its production facility and tasting room to a new location.

The brewery plans to move its new facility to 4500 Fifth Avenue S. later this year, according to a release from Cahaba Brewing Co. The brewery will relocate to the 51,000-square-foot Building C in the Continental Gin Industrial Park.

The release said 21,000 square feet will be dedicated to brewery space, featuring all new equipment aimed at increasing capacity.

The move comes on the heels of the brewery releasing its first canned beer last month and the hope is the new facility will help promote continued expansion.

"The move to Continental Gin is a no brainier for Cahaba," said Andrew Pharo, co-owner of the brewery in a written statement. "It meets every requirement we've been looking for: it's about 2 miles from our current location, has ample space for expansion, a secure campus for our tasting room guests, parking, outdoor seating, a historic building with character, and it allows us to stay a part of the social fabric of Birmingham. We couldn't be happier with our new location."

The firm has been looking for a new location ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR & UT: Eugene-based Ninkasi Brewing Co. expands into Utah
Eugene-based Ninkasi Brewing Co. has expanded into Utah, the ninth state where it will be offering its craft beers, The Register-Guard reported on February 20.

Ninkasi is partnering with General Distributing Co. of Salt Lake City.

“We are excited to continue to build craft beer culture and community in a state that has a lot of great beer fans, breweries, and of course, all kinds of spectacular recreation,” Ninkasi CEO and co-founder Nikos Ridge said.

Ridge and Jamie Floyd founded Ninkasi in 2006 in Eugene’s Whiteaker neighborhood as a tiny production brewery. Since then, it has grown rapidly and is now the 30th largest craft brewery in the United States,

Its beers are now sold throughout Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington, as well as Alberta and Vancouver, Canada.

Ninkasi completed a $24 million expansion last year that increased its brewing capacity by more than 40 percent initially, to 160,000 barrels, with the potential to grow to 250,000 barrels over the next 10 to 15 years.

Floyd and Ridge also have been eyeing Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado as areas for future expansion, but have said they have no immediate plans to start distribution in those states.

Brewery news Canada, YK: Winterlong Brewing aims for opening in Yukon this spring
Canada’s northernmost brewery – Yukon Brewing – will soon have some company, as a new nanobrewery is getting set to open in a subdivision just outside of Whitehorse, Canadian Beer News reported on February 13.

As reported by CBC News, avid homebrewers Marko and Meghan Marjanovic are aiming to launch Winterlong Brewing this spring, with plans to produce around 350 litres of beer a week out of the currently under construction brewhouse near their home.

“We’re going to focus more on hop-focused pale ales, IPA, a dark beer for the dark beer lovers,” Marko said. “We’ll probably rotate a beer once a month or so, something more special like a smoked porter, imperial stout, a German hefeweizen and that sort of thing.”

Brewery news USA, FL: Barley Mow Brewing Co. expands distribution to Jacksonville
Barley Mow Brewing Co. of Largo is expanding its distribution into Jacksonville this month, Jacksonville.com reported on February 18.

The brewery, which recently grew from a two-barrel system to 30 barrels, has four core beers - Maven Nitro Milk Stout, Quackalope IPA, The Unkindness Black Ale and Selkie Belgian Rye Pale Ale - along with seasonal and limited releases.

It’s going to have a few special events to kick off its introduction in Jacksonville, the company said.

Brewery news USA, MI: New microbrewery construction in Cedar Springs delayed till April
The construction of a new microbrewery in Cedar Springs has been delayed due to environmental testing, WOODTV.com reported on February 19.

Owners were waiting on testing and approvals from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality after the demolition of the building that stood on the site where the new Cedar Springs Brewing Company will go up, according to the brewery’s blog.

That approval process is now over, and brownfield credits aimed at decreasing blight have been finalized, owner David Ringler told 24 Hour News 8.

Still, the business is waiting on construction steel to be delivered. Cedar Springs hopes to begin construction by April, saying it will be more cost effective to “do everything at once.”

The 5,700-square-foot brewery and restaurant, which will be located on North Main Street, plans to open its doors to the public in late summer.

Brewery news Australia: Craft beer industry grew by about 40% last year
While Australia’s beer consumption on the whole is at its lowest point in more than a half century, the craft beer market is booming and changing the way the industry targets consumers, CCTV-America reported on February 19.

Inside an old warehouse on Sydney’s west side you’ll find two men carefully crafting a business. “It’s very hands on, its very tactile. I think in some ways its an art form,” said Pat McInerney.

They’re using old dairy equipment to brew a line of beers marketed under the name Willie the Boatman.

They entered the nation’s craft beer market just 9 months ago and the timing couldn’t be better.

“The beer industry in Australia at the moment is pretty much going through a number of changes,” said McInerney.

Beer consumption nationally is at a 65 year low in a country where beer has long been a part of the culture. Sales for major producers is shrinking at about 6 percent a year, but one segment of the industry is growing by about 40 percent last year alone. The sale of craft beers.

“The wine industry has probably helped up in that people started to get discerning about wine and now people are feeling they can do the same with ...More info on site

Brewery news Brazil: Experts say now is the moment to invest in Brazil’s craft beer segment
When Brazil’s AmBev, a subsidiary of Belgium-based Anheuser-Busch InBev, acquired control of Brazilian craft beer maker Wals earlier this month for an undisclosed sum, the company was setting its sights on a growing segment of the industry that has already generated over $700 million a year in sales and expanded by double-digit percentages each year. AmBev’s stake in Brazil’s beer market is about 70%, Forbes reported on February 18.

Founded in 1999 in the city of Belo Horizonte, Wals had revenues of $3.16 million last year, just a fraction of AB InBev’s $43.17 billion in 2013. However, the company has managed to become one of the top players in Brazil’s craft beer market, which consists of more than 300 small breweries whose main products sell for as much as three times the price of industrial beer brands. The deal works both ways; the maker of Budweiser and Bud Light can combat soft sales by buying up popular craft brewers, and sell to a public willing to pay more for better quality.

It seems like this is the moment to invest in craft beer brands. While in the United States the craft beer industry already accounts for over 108,000 jobs, 6.5% of ...More info on site

Brewery news Zimbabwe: Delta Corporation to invest $17 mln in new Chibuku Super plant
Zimbabwe’s Delta Corporation will spend about $17 million on setting up a new Chibuku Super plant at Fairbridge in Bulawayo, as the group moves to keep pace with growing demand. The country's biggest beverages manufacturer is in the process of setting up the new plant with capacity to produce about 337 000 hectolitres a day, All Africa reported on February 20.

Delta is currently producing Super Chibuku beer at its plant in Chitungwiza, but the two lines at the plant, with capacity of 600 000 litres per day, cannot keep pace with demand.

The brewer of lagers Castle, Zambezi, Black Label, Lion, and Castle Lite, among others, currently serves the entire country from Chitungwiza due to the beer's long shelf life.

Chitungwiza Chibuku Super plant manager Mr Joseph Takaindisa said Delta was in the process of procuring equipment from Germany for the plant to be set up at Fairbridge.

"It is supposed to start running in March, but it will be commissioned in May. It will have three quarters capacity of the 450 000 litres a day capacity of this (Chitungwiza) plant," he said

"We are already selling Super Chibuku in Bulawayo, but we will soon be producing from there. The plant will cost about ...More info on site

Brewery news World: SABMiller’s CFRO resigns with immediate effect
SABMiller PLC is searching for a new chief financial officer after Jamie Wilson on February 19 resigned with immediate effect, citing personal reasons.

The world’s second-biggest brewer by sales said Domenic De Lorenzo, currently director of group strategy, will replace Mr. Wilson while the company looks for a permanent replacement.

Mr. Wilson, 55, will step down from the board with immediate effect and be placed on “gardening leave” before officially leaving the group on March 31, the company said in a statement. Mr. Wilson will receive a year’s salary of £762,200 ($1.18 million) and a car allowance worth £17,150, as well as a bonus and pension contribution.

His departure comes at a potentially critical time for SABMiller and the beer industry as a whole, which analysts say is ripe for a period of consolidation.

SABMiller, the maker of Miller Lite, Pilsner Urquell and Peroni Nastro Azzurro, has been subject to intense speculation that it will be bought by Anheuser Busch InBev SA, the world’s biggest brewer.

SABMiller’s shares have risen 26% in the past year as investors anticipate a deal. The company last year had a bid of its own rejected by Dutch beer company Heineken NV, a move many analysts viewed as an attempt ...More info on site

Brewery news Tanzania: Local brewer warns against regular hiking of beer excise duty
A local brewer has cautioned the Tanzanian government against regular hiking of excise duty on beer and spirits, calling for industrial friendly fiscal policies, All Africa reported on February 20.

Serengeti Breweries Limited (SBL) Director of Corporate Relations, Mr Evans Mlelwa, said regular increase of excise duty on beer and spirits undermine growth of the industries and the economy in general.

Mr Mlelwa said this at a news conference during a familiarisation tour of police officers at the firm's plant in Dar es Salaam on February 19. The members of the Police Force were led by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr Adrian Magayane.

Explaining further, Mr Mlelwa said regular increase in excise duty ultimately affects end users who cover for all of the manufacturers’ production costs and taxes.

"Just after the increase of excise duty, producers tend to raise prices of their products and this has a very serious impact on sales," he said.

He noted that once sales are not improving due to high prices, brewing industries such as SBL cannot be able to expand usage of local raw materials due to low production caused by the drop in sales.

"The increase of excise duty and other levies does not reflect the increase on citizen's ...More info on site
