Alternatives to ICE-3
ABSTRACT
The current HPLC calibration standard for measuring alpha acids and beta acids in hops and hop products is the International Calibration Extract, third formulation (ICE-3), derived from a de-oiled CO2 hop extract. Laboratories that use ICE-3 must warm and mix the calibration extract to ensure that it is homogenous prior to use. As an alternative, this article offers a standard that uses the crystalline complexes of dicyclohexylamine-alpha acids and dicyclohexylamine-beta acids which are more stable than ICE-3. Because these crystalline salts are homogeneous and readily dissolve in methanol, they are also easier to use than ICE-3.

Canada: Canada Revenue Agency abolishes beer and spirits purchase barriers between provinces
|
Canada Revenue Agency announced on February 13 that Canadians will now be able to purchase beer and spirits in provinces where they don't live and bring them home for personal use, Xinhua reports.
The measure removes unnecessary red tape and is expected to benefit independent breweries and distilleries in communities across Canada by opening up regional markets and generating jobs.
Amendments to the Importation of Intoxicating Liquors Act (IILA) remove federal barriers and now allow individuals to move beer and spirits from one province to another for personal use.
They were adopted as part of the Government of Canada's Economic Action Plan 2014 and follow the government's elimination of similar barriers in 2012 in order to permit the interprovincial movement of wine for personal use.
Under the IILA, imports of alcohol must be done by a provincial liquor board or other agency authorized by the province to sell alcohol. This provision has not changed as a result of the amendments.
As provincial liquor laws govern the movement, sale, purchase and possession of wine, beer, and spirits within each province, changes to these laws are often also required to allow interprovincial movement. USA, NM: Rio Bravo Brewing Co. preparing for soft opening in April
|
Spring could bring a new brand of craft beer to Albuquerque, Albuquerque Journal reported on February 14.
Rio Bravo Brewing Co. should open softly in April and celebrate its grand opening shortly thereafter, according to Denise Baker, who owns the new venture with husband Randy.
Originally targeted for the South Valley area, Rio Bravo will actually operate in the old Firestone Building at 1912 2nd NW, near Interstate 40. The 14,000-square-foot building provides ample room for production, Baker said, as well as a substantial area for the associated brewpub and beer garden.
Rio Bravo will open with seating for about 180 people, though Baker said it will eventually have room for about 300 guests.
The Bakers — who own Albuquerque’s D.R.B. Electric — have turned to a beer industry veteran to oversee the brewing, hiring Ty Levis, formerly of Santa Fe Brewing Co.
“We’re very fortunate to have him come on board,” Baker said.
Baker said the brewing equipment is scheduled to arrive in early March. Some cleanup has begun at the site, and Baker said D.R.B. itself will spearhead the buildout.
Baker, a frequent traveler to Germany, said the breweries around Munich will serve as the inspiration for the design. Windows will give patrons a look

USA, AL: Trim Tab Brewing Co to expand production capacity
|
Trim Tab Brewing Co looks to expand its production capabilities for the first time since opening in Lakeview last spring, the Birmingham Business Journal reported on February 16.
Co-founder and CEO Harris Stewart said in an interview with the Birmingham Business Journal that the expansion would include a new canning line with 60 new barrels of fermentation capacity at the brewery's 5th Avenue South location — an area already feeling the positive effects of the burgeoning local brewing culture.
"There is such a push for local, and I think it has moved past the possibility of this being a marketing fad," Stewart said. "Now, you can put a face to what is being delivered. The challenge for us is having beer not being understood as a commodity and it being a lifestyle, a face that made it, a friend that you know was an integral part in making it."
Stewart also said new beers are in the works that will be complimented by the company's growth.
"Around late spring or early summer, we will see Trim Tab IPA hit the shelves," he said. "We also have new distributions in the works."
The canning line is expected to be in operation by May, Stewart said.

USA, MI: Detroit welcomes two new breweries
|
A rare thing happened in Detroit on February 12. Two breweries opened their doors on the same day, practically right across the street from each other, Hour Detroit reported on February 13.
Brew Detroit and Batch Brewing Company bring two new options for craft beer lovers — just a short walk away from each other.
There is a spirit of community and collaboration between the two venues. Employees at the two breweries helped each other out during the construction phase with ingredient and equipment trades and brewing advice.
Many other area brewers were also quick to lend a hand, demonstrating the camaraderie of the brewing community. The general feeling is that support for each other helps advance the craft beer movement, which is good for all craft brewers.
Batch Brewing Company is Detroit’s first “nano” brewery. Their mission is to bring small batches of beer that are big on flavor.
Founder and brewer Stephen Rogison spent some time explaining the long process to get the brewery up and running. USA, GA: Left Nut Brewing Co. forced to revise location plans
|
Plans to open Gainesville’s first microbrewery in the midtown district are no more.
But fear not, craft beer lovers — Left Nut Brewing Co. is still coming to the city, Gainesvilletimes.com reported on February 13.
Owner Pap Datta, a Forsyth County resident and former Hewlett-Packard executive, said he signed a lease on February 13 on a 19,000-square-foot building in the Chicopee Mill industrial area.
Datta will need to receive a special use permit from the city, which had been approved for the midtown location.
The Gainesville Planning and Appeals Board will hear this request next month and the City Council likely will vote on the matter in early April.
Datta will also need brewing licenses before production can begin.
But without further delays, Datta said he hopes to have the brewery open and operational by late May.
Datta said the original location eyed for the brewery, along Maple Street near Wild Wing Café, had a lot going for it, including its proximity to the downtown square.
“However, we just couldn’t reach terms with the landlords,” Datta said. He added that after lengthy negotiations, it became apparent the owner of the building had different business needs than Datta.

USA, CT: Thimble Island Brewery Co. to move into larger facility
|
Branford-based Thimble Island Brewery Co. plans to move into a much larger facility that once housed the Gravy Master Building at 16 Business Park Drive, reports Shore Publishing.
They plan to relocate to their new expanded site by the summer. The company has inked a 10-year lease with an option to purchase the facility, Shore Publishing reports.
Thimble Island Brewery Co. plans to use the facility for the manufacturing of beer, a tasting room, bar area, and production and distribution area.
The company founded in 2009 and has been operating at 53 East Industrial Road.
The new facility will have 30,000-square-feet of space and they currently only have 5,000-square-feet, reports the New Haven Register.
They are hoping to have their new space up and running by the beginning of May.
In their larger facility they are aiming to produce 45,000 barrels of beer and last year they sold 2,000 barrels, the Register report.
Branford has four facilities that are permitted to manufacture beer.

USA, OR: Two Kilts Brewing Co. opening new production facility in Hillsboro ‘not going to happen’
|
Sherwood-based Two Kilts Brewing Co. announced that it would open a location in downtown Hillsboro in January. But last month, the company said the project was "delayed," despite city planners' approval of a site plan for the building at 313 E. Main St., between Third and Fourth avenues. And now, the Hillsboro location appears to be finished before it even started. The business said in a brief Facebook post over the weekend that "Hillsboro is not going to happen" and that it will remain in Sherwood, OregonLive.com reported on February 16.
After being prodded by commenters who demanded further explanation, the brewery followed up with another post.
"Definitely no disrespect for Hillsboro and their awesome community of people," the post reads. "You guys out there definitely help us thrive! The building unfortunately ended up not working for us. Lots of unexpected cash and problems with the building that we were unfortunately unable to fix with the landlord."
Ironically, the brewery wanted to come to Hillsboro because of reported problems with the city of Sherwood surrounding expansion plans.

USA, MA: Boston-based brewer Trillium Brewing Co. to open second brewery in Canton
|
Craft beer fans in Canton, Massachusetts have a new reason to raise a glass: Boston-based brewer Trillium Brewing Co. said on February 16 that it signed a lease for a new brewery in town that will likely open toward the end of this year, Boston Globe reported.
In a blog post on Trillium’s website, co-owner Esther Tetreault said the company won’t abandon its high-profile spot in Fort Point, its initial home when Tetreault and her husband JC started Trillium nearly four years ago.
“We’ll just finally be able to loosen the reins on production volume and operate more like a pilot brewery (in Fort Point), continuing to offer new styles that are available until they run out,” Esther Tetreault wrote in the blog post. “We love seeing regulars come in week after week, arms full of growlers, looking up at the board to see what’s new.”
Trillium is leasing 16,000 square feet, making the Canton brewery nearly eight times the size of its home base on Congress Street in South Boston’s Fort Point section. Beer will be sold directly to consumers via growlers and bottles in Canton, and Trillium is working with town officials on a plan for on-premises consumption.

World: Carlsberg names new CEO as from June 2015
|
Danish brewer Carlsberg named a new chief executive on February 18 and warned that problems in Russia and Ukraine would weigh on earnings again this year.
Dutchman Cees 't Hart, the head of dairy company FrieslandCampina, will become Carlsberg chief executive in June. He replaces Jorgen Buhl Rasmussen who turns 60 this year and had told the board that he wanted to take a step back into non-executive roles.
"It's a decision we both agreed upon is the right thing for Carlsberg, and also right for Jorgen to move on in his non-executive career," Chairman Flemming Besenbacher told reporters.
For seven years Rasmussen has fought a tough battle as sales in Russia, Carlsberg's main market after the acquisition of the Baltika brand in 2004, had been affected by tighter regulations and more recently a sanctions-hit economy.
"Maybe his energy has been exhausted, and this change will definitely bring a breath of fresh air into the company," analyst Morten Imsgard from Sydbank said.
New CEO 't Hart has run FrieslandCampina, one of the world's largest dairy companies, for six years and steered the group through a large merger and substantial growth in Asia, a key focus area for Carlsberg as well.

France: France’s alcohol consumption halved in 20 years
|
According to a new study, just 18% of French men and 6% of French women consume alcohol on a daily basis, marking a reduction of 50% in the past 20 years, The Riviera Times reported on February 16.
The recent report produced by La Direction de la recherche, des études, de l’évaluation et des statistiques (DREES) has revealed once again that adult alcohol consumption is decreasing nationwide. On average, 12% of French adults admitted to drinking wine, beer or spirits every day, compared to 23% in 1995.
In terms of provincial alcohol consumption, the report revealed that the Nord Pas de Calais, Pays de la Loire, Midi Pyrénées and Languedoc Roussillon regions are home to the most prolific drinkers. In a surprising turn of events, the Ile de France, where people are known for their hectic lifestyles, is one of the areas where people consume the least amount of alcohol.

Australia: Investigation into beer giants’ draught beer market practices elevated to ‘priority matter’ for Australian Competition and Consumer Commission

An investigation into Australia's two big beer giants, Lion and Carlton & United Breweries (CUB), has been elevated to a "priority matter" for the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, The Sydney Morning Herald reported on February 16.
A team is believed to have been assigned to explore allegations that Lion and CUB – which control more than 90 per cent of beer taps through brands such as Tooheys and VB – are using their dominance to edge out rival brewers from the A$2.5 billion draught beer market.
It doesn't get much bigger than beer, and even a whiff of an alleged breach of the law has put the regulator on high alert. In the past year it has been in contact with Lion and CUB.
Lion said it "can confirm it has co-operated fully with the ACCC in relation to its inquiries into the Australian draught beer market. However, it will be inappropriate for us to make further comment at this time."

EU: Euromalt and EBC report breakthrough in the research on gushing
|
Euromalt, the European malting industry Association and the European Brewery Convention (EBC), the technical and scientific arm within The Brewers of Europe, have reached an important breakthrough in the research on gushing: in a joint research project with the German Research and Teaching Institute for Brewing in Berlin (VLB), a potential method to predict the gushing potential of malt and beer samples was identified, Euromalt reported on February 9.
Gushing in beer refers to the phenomenon of uncontrolled evolution of foam or beer from a bottle that is not caused by movement or temperature. The exact reasons causing this physical reaction remain largely circumstantial at this point.
In 2012, European maltsters and brewers decided to join forces to further research this common interest. In a tender process, VLB was awarded the contract with a total budget of € 260.000 which was equally shared by both associations to carry out the research project aimed at the identification of gushing-inducing factors.

Mozambique: Cassava production for beer to get larger scale in Mozambique’s Inhambane province

The Dutch Agricultural Development & Trading Company (Dadtco) plans to sign an agreement with the International Fertiliser Development Centre (IFDC) aimed at large-scale production of cassava in Mozambique’s Inhambane province, according to daily newspaper Notícias.
The ceremony will take place at the Dadtco factory, established in 2002 to foster the development of the agricultural sector and marketing of agricultural products. The signing of the agreement will be the high point of the ceremony to celebrate the successful conclusion of the sale of cassava.
Dadtco, in partnership with IFDC, since 2001 has processed cassava produced by small Mozambican farmers into cassava cake, a product that is used by Cervejas de Moçambique to produce beer.
Impala beer is one of the most popular beers in Mozambique and its success required cassava cake production to double in the second half of 2014.
Currently, Dadtco gets cassava from 6,000 small farmers in Nampula and Inhambane, which injects 1 million meticais a month into the local economy.
In 2012 the IFDC, through government funding from the Netherlands, created a public-private partnership to support small cassava farmers, with the distribution of improved cassava planting material from the Mozambique Agrarian Research Institute and training of farmers in improved practices.
