Barley news USA: Brewers worried about quality barley supply this year
Mother Nature is causing headaches for breweries here and nationwide as they scramble to get the quality barley needed for first-class beer, Citizen-Times reported on February 2.

Heavy rains last fall in barley country — Montana and Idaho — pounded the crop, leaving a lot of it unsuitable for brewing. That has limited the supply of top-quality brewing barley nationwide and sent waves of concern through the beer world.

What it means for the beer customer is still uncertain. If costs increase, some breweries may have to pass them along to the customer. Brewers will work to make sure that beers taste the same as always.

The issue is "critical," says the Asheville Brewers Alliance, which is hosting a two-day barley summit for breweries Feb. 6-7 in Asheville. The program will explore barley issues and options. The need for a strong barley supply is magnified by the 19 breweries in Asheville and Buncombe County, and more than a dozen others around the mountains. Nationally, there are about 3,200 craft breweries across the U.S., all of them scrambling for the same ingredients.

More than just entertainment, the area breweries here have become a big economic force. An informal survey by the Asheville Brewers Alliance shows ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KY: Craft brewers oppose AB InBev’s ownership of alcohol distributorship
The beer battle brewing in Kentucky is about to pour over into the General Assembly, Lexington Herald-Leader reported on February 1.

It's a fight over market access that pits small local craft brewers against the world's largest brewer, international giant AB InBev, headquartered in Belgium.

House Speaker Greg Stumbo, D-Prestonburg, filed House Bill 168 to prohibit an entity that has a brewer's or out-of-state malt beverage license from also having a distributor's license, in an effort to make the state's three-tier system for beer parallel to that of spirits and wine. Put in place after the repeal of Prohibition, the system lets alcohol producers sell only to distributors or wholesalers, who sell only to retailers.

While craft brewers such as Lexington's Country Boy and West Sixth Brewery have the support of Lexington-based distributor Kentucky Eagle, the Kentucky Guild of Brewers and the National Beer Wholesalers Association, AB InBev has the backing of Greater Louisville Inc. (Louisville's chamber of commerce) and the Teamsters.

The skirmish began last fall when Anheuser-Busch, bought by a Belgian company in 2008, sought to buy an Owensboro alcohol distributorship. Anheuser-Busch has owned a distributorship in Louisville since 1978 and wants to expand its reach.

But the state Department of Alcoholic Beverage ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NE: Nebraska Legislature considering two craft brewing industry bills
The state Legislature is considering a bill that would offer tax incentives to beer brewers that use Nebraska-grown barley and hops and another that would allow more restaurants and bars to sell growlers of craft beer, Daily Journal reported on February 2.

Sponsor Sen. Ken Schilz of Ogallala urged members of the General Affairs Committee at a hearing on February 2 to support the legislation, saying it would boost agriculture and bring more visitors to Nebraska.

"If we can bring things like breweries, that brings economic investment, that brings tourism, that brings people to our state wanting to spend money," Schilz said.

The first measure would offer a nonrefundable tax credit to breweries using barley and hops grown in Nebraska in production.

In-state brewers could receive a tax credit on a percentage of the tax paid in the previous year on the first 20,000 barrels of beer. If 10 to 40 percent of the barley and hops used were Nebraska-grown, the credit would be 15 percent. Forty to 70 percent Nebraska crops would receive a 25 percent tax credit, and manufacturers using more than 70 percent would receive a 35 percent tax credit.

There are 38 breweries with licenses or license requests in Nebraska, according ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: The Jessup Farm Barrel House planned to launch by May
By May, a new brewery will open in the 3,000-square-foot and 130-year-old barn located at Jessup Farm Artisan Village near Timberline and Drake roads, The Coloradoan reported on January 30.

The Jessup Farm Barrel House is a pet project of developer Gino Campana and family along with Brad Lincoln and Gordon Schuck of Funkwerks brewery.

It is the first announcement of a handful of businesses planned to open this spring at the 13-acre Jessup Farm, which is part of the 160-acre housing development Bucking Horse.

Other retail spaces will include a farm-to-table restaurant, a bakery, a coffee roaster and shop and a photographer's studio, all housed within the century-old farmhouse, barn and stables.

The new brewery won't be an extension of Funkwerks, Lincoln said. Instead, it will focus on beer blending and barrel aging, utilizing around 100 wine, bourbon and specialty barrels to give character to various base beer styles.

An example could be an IPA that's aged in both tequila and wine barrels.

The team is bringing in an industry veteran to lead the new brewery, Lincoln said, though he declined to release the new brewer's name at this point.

Lincoln said the business will focus on in-house sales at the barrel house tap room and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Richmond City Council debates delay construction of Stone Brewing’s new facility
Stone Brewing Co. has hit some bumps in the road as Richmond City Council fights over how much oversight it should have on money made from the project, ABC News reported on February 3.

Construction on the 200,000 square foot facility would lease for the new brewery is expected to begin this week, according to the Richmond Times Dispatch.

Back in December, the council unanimously voted to provide $23 million in funding to begin construction on the site.

The RTD reports that city council is now battling over a proposed amendment that would give the council more control over any revenue generated by the project.

The council was expected to vote on the amendment last night, but the vote was delayed until February 9.

Brewery news USA, NC: Green Man Brewery on track for its biggest year ever
Asheville's Green Man Brewery is on track for its biggest year ever, with the debut of an expansion that includes a big packaging room, a retail shop and a rooftop beer garden, Citizen-Times reported on February 3.

The multimillion dollar project will open in summer or early fall, said Green Man owner Dennis Thies.

"We are committed to this property," he said.

The brewery and its Dirty Jacks tasting room at 27 Buxton Ave. are anchors of the South Slope brewing district. Construction workers are busy building the structure next to the brewery.

Asheville's second oldest brewery, founded in 1997, Green Man will greatly increase production, from about 7,000 barrels in 2014 to a goal of 10,000 this year, Thies said. Green Man's beers are sold across North Carolina, in Greenville and Columbia, South Carolina, and in Nashville and Knoxville, Tennessee.

The expansion is centered around a speedy, upgraded bottling line. It will include a retail shop selling beers, T-shirts, hats and other items. One level of the building will have restrooms. And the upstairs includes a 3,000-square-foot indoor/outdoor beer garden.

"It's not so much about doing more, but doing it more efficiently," he said.

Green Man is pushing ahead with an expansion into Florida through a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: The Beaver Island Brewing Co. ready to launch this week
The Beaver Island Brewing Co. was under construction all of January, St. Cloud Times reported on February 3.

But that didn't stop curious patrons from checking out St. Cloud's newest brewery at 216 Sixth Ave. S.

"People have been constantly walking in and asking if we are open yet," said Nick Barth, who runs the brewery with Matt Studer and brewmaster Chris Laumb. "People are excited for the brand."

Barth also expects the taproom, which is undergoing its final city inspections this week, to open Feb. 14.

"I think the community is excited to have its own beer," Barth said. "Everyone has just been so enthusiastic. And (Laumb) makes a quality beer."

Brewery news USA, NY: Druthers receives equipment for its new brew pub and beer-canning facility
New equipment arrived on January 30 at Druthers, which is opening a brew pub and beer-canning facility in the spring at 1053 Broadway, Albany Times Union reported.

The 23,000-square-foot building, on the northern end of Albany's warehouse district, was previously a plumbing-supply company.

The brewing facility also will have a restaurant focused on wood-fired pizza.

Druthers' original location is on Broadway in Saratoga Springs.

Brewery news UK: Research claims wine replaced beer as the UK’s favourite tipple
A glass of wine has replaced a pint of beer as the UK’s favourite tipple, according to research commissioned by the Wine and Spirit Trade Association.

Of 4,049 adults quizzed on their drinking habits, wine emerged as the preferred drink of choice for over half (60%), regardless of age, region and social class.

The YouGov research also revealed that wine is the favoured drink for more 25-34-year-olds than ever before – with 57% opting for wine over other alcoholic products.

“While our consumption of alcohol continues to fall, wine is our new favourite drink and, with the global emergence of British wine and food products, we are calling on the Chancellor to drop alcohol duty by 2% at the Budget in March,” WSTA chief executive Miles Beale said.

“By cutting the duty on wine, the Chancellor would provide welcome relief for a growing British industry and a drink much loved by millions of consumers, as well as generating an increase of more than £1billion annually for the public finances.”

A separate survey of 2,000 adults commissioned by the WSTA also found that almost two thirds (64%) believed alcohol was taxed too highly – UK consumers currently pay nearly 60% tax on an average ...More info on site

Barley news France: Malting barley prices keep declining
The French malting barley prices keep declining, and the activity on the market is low, La Depeche reported on January 30.

Maltsters are showing very little interest in purchases, especially for the old crop. However, several deals were closed on FOB Creil basis for the new crop.

Relatively strong feed barley prices are creating certain competition for malting barley, industry sources report.

Brewery news Australia: Carlton & United Breweries tips greater pack size choice and staff training as dominant trends in beer this year
Carlton & United Breweries (CUB) has tipped greater customer choice in pack sizes and a continued emphasis on staff training as some of the dominant trends in beer this year, The Shout reported on February 4.

Acting marketing director Richard Oppy said CUB will keep working on the products, packs and promotions that deliver an option for every customer.

"A local bottleshop in inner Melbourne might be after a different offering than a liquor outlet on the Gold Coast," he said.

Oppy said CUB will keep working with its customers on sharing knowledge about beer and how to effectively engage patrons.

“We are keen to see the beer industry thrive. We all know beer consumption in general is down and we've got our work cut out for us as an industry to keep the momentum going around beer. However we think we have the products to keep up with changing tastes and trends, while also delivering some heavy hitting support activity in the classic beer stakes,” he said.

Brewery news Japan: Sapporo Breweries asks for extra tax return for its “Goku Zero” beer-like product
Sapporo Breweries Ltd. has asked the National Tax Agency to return ¥11.5 billion of extra liquor tax it paid last year over the categorization of its “Goku Zero” popular beer-like product, Jiji Press reported on January 30.

The Sapporo Holdings Ltd. unit paid the tax after it was notified by tax authorities that Goku Zero may not fall into the so-called third-segment quasi-beer category, which has a lower liquor tax rate than “happoshu” beer-like products.

But Sapporo Breweries recently concluded through an in-house re-examination that Goku Zero is a third-segment beverage and filed for the tax return with the authorities on January 26, informed sources said.

Goku Zero, launched in June 2013 as a third-sector product, became a sales blockbuster due to its lack of sugars and purines, a type of compound that may cause gout.

Following the tax authorities’ notification, however, Sapporo Breweries stopped production in May last year and paid the extra tax to avoid confusion among retailers and consumers.

After altering the production method, the company relaunched Goku Zero in July as happoshu.

Whisky news India: Diageo confident of retaining majority stake in United Spirits Limited even if it loses in court
Diageo Plc, a British multinational alcoholic beverages company, has expressed confidence of retaining a majority stake in United Spirits Limited (USL) even if it loses the legal battle pertaining to the purchase of shares of USL from United Breweries Holdings Ltd (UBHL), Business Insider reported on January 30.

Last year, the Supreme Court had ordered status quo to be maintained in the case. The next hearing is scheduled to take place on April 21. Moreover, the Karnataka High Court, which had admitted six petitions against UBHL, will hear the case on February 26.

"...Averse results for Diageo in the proceedings referred to above could, absent leave or relief in other proceedings, ultimately result in Diageo losing title to the 10,141,437 USL shares acquired from UBHL. Diageo believes it would remain in control of USL and be able to consolidate USL as a subsidiary regardless of the outcome of this litigation," the London-headquartered company said.

"There can be no certainty as to the outcome of the existing or any further related legal proceedings or the timeframe within which they would be concluded," it added.

Diageo had acquired a stake of 14.98% in USL for Rs 3,130 crore in July 2013. On July 2, 2014, it ...More info on site

Barley news Argentina: Wheat export permits to be restrained if exporters pay growers significantly less than the international prices
Wheat exporters who buy the grain from Argentina's farmers will not be issued permits if they pay the growers significantly less than the international price for the crop, the government said on January 30.

The announcement, by Economy Minister Axel Kicillof, followed complaints by local producers that government restrictions on wheat exports artificially suppressed local prices. The government said the quotas are to make sure local consumer prices are fair.

"We will only give export permits when the price that these exporters pay the producer is near to the international price," Kicillof told journalists after a meeting with a leading farmers' association.

Relations between farmers and two-term President Cristina Fernandez have been severely strained since massive farm protests six years ago over her tax policies.

Leading grains exporters operating in Argentina include Bunge Ltd, Cargill Inc and Louis Dreyfus Commodities BV.

"We understand that exporters are paying between 900-1,000 pesos per tonne of wheat while the selling price abroad is between 1,250-1,500 pesos per tonne," Kicillof said.

Argentina's 2014/15 wheat harvest has just been completed and the grain is trading at about 1,000 pesos (about $115.70) per ton in the Rosario grains market, significantly below the 1,450 pesos in September.

Brewery news UK: Carlsberg UK launching new alcohol-free San Miguel beer
Carlsberg UK has gained listings at Tesco and Asda for a new alcohol-free San Miguel beer, Off Licence News reported on February 2.

San Miguel 0.0% comes in a 33cl bottle and is said to “maintain all the flavour, freshness and quality of alcoholic beer”.

Carlsberg is also launching San Miguel 0.0% Limon in a 33cl can, which will appear on shelves next month and has gained listings at Asda and convenience stores.

David Scott, director of brand and Insight at Carlsberg UK, said: “We constantly monitor consumer demand and respond to current trends with innovations in our portfolio. The insight is showing there is consumer desire for great-tasting 0.0% beers, providing that same refreshing lager taste, for occasions when alcohol may not be a suitable choice.

“Research suggests that alcohol free beers will play an important role in attracting different demographics into the beer category in the future. Therefore our customers can expect further innovation in the alcohol free market from Carlsberg UK during 2015.”

Four-packs of both beers carry an rrp of £3.49.

Brewery news South Africa: Competition Appeals Court dismisses antitrust case against SABMiller
South Africa's Competition Appeals Court has dismissed a long-running antitrust case against SABMiller, upholding a previous decision by a sister tribunal that there was not enough evidence to prove the brewer is breaking the law, The Economic Times reported on February 3.

The Competition Commission - which investigates and refers cases to the Competition Tribunal for a ruling - was appealing a decision by the tribunal, arguing that SABMiller had broken the law by giving its appointed distributors discounts and making it difficult for those without such discounts to compete.

The commission had also argued that the brewer, which has about 90 per cent of the beer market in Africa's most advanced economy, was carrying out price discrimination.

However, the appeals court said in its judgment on February 2 that the commission had failed to establish that the alleged price discrimination would have the likely effect of substantially preventing or lessening competition.

Brewery news Australia: New South Wales becomes biggest-selling state for Coopers Brewery for the first time in 153 years
New South Wales (NSW) has become the biggest-selling beer market in Australia for family-owned Coopers Brewery for the first time in 153 years, The Sydney Morning Herald reported on February 2.

The historic shift has prompted the South Australian group to assess the merits of setting up a large distribution site on the eastern seaboard to service the expanding NSW market, where the sheer size of the population helped drive NSW to the No. 1 position among the states.

Sales figures for the first seven months of 2014-15 show that NSW has overtaken Coopers' home state of South Australia as its strongest performer after extra momentum built during the month of January.
