Brewery news USA, TX: Independence Brewing Company expands in Austin
Celebrating their 10th Anniversary later this year, Independence Brewing Co. kicks off this key milestone with a significant expansion and update to the brewery. As one of the three original craft breweries in Austin, Independence debuts its new facility in January, more than doubling its current 7,500 square foot space to an expansive 17,500 square feet, Brewbound reported on January 15.

Independence Brewing’s new and improved system replaces current outdated equipment with this new state-of-the art equipment, efficiencies increase greatly, allowing Independence to remarkably increase production. For example, with the previous system it required around 8,000 lbs. of grain to brew a 60-barrel batch of Convict Hill Stout whereas on the new system, it only requires 5,000 lbs. to brew the same amount in a single batch. One of the most noticeable end results will be with the brewery’s capacity to expand to new markets. With the new system in place, they will be able to considerably expand their distribution to Houston, Dallas-Ft Worth, and more.

“We’re thrilled about this huge step forward for our facility, as the new expansion and updated equipment allow us to increase our reach throughout Texas,” says Co-founder and President Amy Cartwright. “Being one of the original ...More info on site

Brewery news CO: Left Hand Brewing continues expanding in Longmont with purchase of building
Left Hand Brewing Co. continues expansion of its headquarters in Longmont with the purchase of a new building and an addition to of one of its largest existing buildings, Longmont Daily Times-Call reported on January 15.

The company recently closed on a 14,200-square-foot building for $995,000. The building is just east of a couple of buildings it bought last year as part of a $660,000 purchase of land and buildings just to the east of the main brewery. All the buildings bought this year and last have operating businesses in them, and the businesses in the old location will continue to operate for the next couple of years, Left Hand's president and co-founder, Eric Wallace, said. However, he expects to move into the new building by the end of this year.

The latest building purchase brings Left Hand's total footprint to about 81/2 acres, Wallace said.

"As volume keeps increasing, we keep getting tighter and tighter," he said.

Last year, the brewery -- which narrowly escaped September's flood damage with the exception of a small temporary lab space -- produced 65,879 barrels of beer, a 33 percent increase from 2012. Revenue was up 34 percent, Wallace said, to $16.8 million. Employee head count was ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: SweetWater Brewing reports 32% increase in production in 2013
Atlanta’s SweetWater Brewing announced on January 15 that it sold 144,000 barrels last year, up 32% versus 2012, according to Brewbound.

Growth was driven primarily by its flagship offerings — 420 Extra Pale Ale and SweetWater IPA — as well as the company’s variety 12-pack, Tackle Box, which grew 215 percent.

“420 Extra Pale Ale led in overall volume, experiencing a 22-percent increase over 2012, with IPA following closely after sales grew 46-percent,” the company said in a release.

Approximately 75 percent of the company’s overall growth came from existing markets.

The release also highlighted the brewery’s plans to broaden its distribution footprint in 2014. SweetWater will expand into Virginia at the end of this month and has inked deals with Virginia Eagle for distribution in the Northern Virginia and Charlottesville markets, Loveland in Richmond, Capital Eagle in Washington D.C., and Hoffman in Southeastern Virginia.

The brewery said that it will look to sell its beer in 12 states before the end of 2014 and is already eyeing expansions into Mississippi, Ohio and Texas.

Brewery news USA, MN & AR: Summit Brewing Compamy expanding to Arkansas
Summit Brewing Company announced its expansion into the Arkansas beer market, contributing to the burgeoning growth of craft beer in that state. The brewery’s flagship beer, Extra Pale Ale, along with Sága IPA, Oatmeal Stout, and Horizon Red IPA will be available on draught for Arkansas beer lovers in February 2014. Bottled beer will be available sometime in March, Brewbound reported on January 15.

Extra Pale Ale is a classic British style Pale Ale, with a bronze color and a pronounced hop flavor with notes of citrus aroma. This beer has been the flagship for the brewery since 1986 when the first keg was delivered across the street from the brewery with a two wheel cart.

Sága IPA is the fastest growing Summit brand. With its rich gold color and pronounced New Zealand hop character, beer drinkers note aromas of kiwi, passion fruit and apricot.

Summit Oatmeal Stout is smooth and slightly sweet, with hints of coffee, caramel and chocolate. It has a cascading rich black color and is only available on draught dispensed with a nitrogen gas mix.

Horizon Red IPA has an exceptional blend of American hops that gives it an intense ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Karbach Brewing Company coming to Austin
Karbach Brewing Co. has expanded across the Lone Star State, offering beer on Austin taps for the first time on January 14, according to Houston Chronicle.

The makers of favorites like Weisse Versa and Sympathy for the Lager opened in Houston just two years ago and have already made it to bars and grocery stores in College Station, Galveston, Beaumont and San Antonio.

"We've experienced incredible growth," said David Graham, head of marketing at Karbach. "Austin was always something we wanted, but we also wanted to be sure we could meet demand."

The company will start by selling signature beers on tap in Austin bars and restaurants before expanding to selling direct from grocery stores.

"We've driven down to Houston to pick them up before," says David Voss, GM at Craft Pride who start their 16 tap take over on January 14, "People are always looking for them."

Brewery news USA, MT: Lewis and Clark Brewing Company expanding in Helena City
Lewis and Clark Brewing Company owner is excited for the future of his business after city officials approved his request for expansion, Beartooth NBC reported on January 15.

The Helena City Commission agreed on January 13 to allow the Lewis and Clark Brewing Company to expand beyond its 10,000 barrel limit per year. Brewery owner Max Pigman says the next step is to work with the Department of Revenue regarding liquor licensing.

"We can continue to grow, continue to hire employees, continue to expand our distribution across the state of Montana, and not have to worry about the risk of hitting that 10,000 barrel limit and then either pulling out of a market or shutting down our retails operations." Pigman's goal is to finish the expansion by summer.

Brewery news USA, VT: Hop’n Moose Brewing Company plans to open in April
Dale Patterson, the new proprietor of what is to be Rutland's first brew pub, is now in the process of renovating the building, Mountaintimes reported on January 16.

Patterson has dubbed the pub Hop'n Moose Brewing Co. and hopes to have it open April 1.

Patterson is in the final stages of securing the necessary permits but seems confident he can open April 1 and begin serving beer brewed on-site June 1.

This brewery will be the second in Rutland County, which for years was the only county in the state not to have a brewery. Foley Brothers Brewing, in Brandon was the first opening in June 2012.

Brewery news USA, NY: Brooklyn Brewery facility to be built at the Culinary Institute of America
The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) has announced that it will partner with the beer experts at Brooklyn Brewery to bring a small brewery to Hyde Park. The Brooklyn Brewery at the CIA in Hyde Park will be housed within a new student union building on campus.

Not only will it offer beer to (of-age) students and campus visitors, the Brooklyn Brewery at the CIA will also be "a research and development classroom" where students and faculty can experiment with beer production. Brewmaster Garret Oliver is planning to be on campus regularly, and will be working with the CIA to develop a curriculum around his beer facilities.

The brewery is also planning to serve four signature beers which will be served in the CIA's restaurants. The project is slated to open in the summer of 2015.

Brewery news USA, FL: Motorworks Brewing opens in Bradenton on January 22
Bradenton's first modern brewery, Motorworks Brewing Company, finally opens on January 22, Bradenton Herald reported on January 16.

This week the brewery is awaiting 90 bbl fermenters that are 20-foot-tall stainless steel tanks. They're so big that owners Denise and Frank Tschida hired Tom Winkler PE to cut open 8 to 12 feet through concrete floors.

The tanks are being imported and were at customs in Miami on January 15, said spokeswoman and brewery vice president Ann Altman and are expected to be installed within the week. Once the large tanks arrive this week, workers will use a gantry-style system to actually lift the tanks, pass them through an opening on the second floor back wall, and lower them into place.

The brewery is welcome news for the approximately 20 employees and for the neighborhood. Motorworks' first partnership with the village is figuring out a food partnership with neighboring Charisma Cafe.

Brewery news USA, WA: Lowercase Brewing Company opens in Seattle
Lowercase Brewing officially opens on Friday, January 17th in Seattle’s South Park neighbourhood, Seattle Post Intelligencer reported on January 14.

Chris Smith, the owner of Lowercase Brewing, said the name Lowercase came from two main things: “We wanted a way for our customers to easily recognize our beers in a crowded marketplace, so we needed something with a theme to tie our beers together. We thought the alphabet was a decent place to start.

We feel the primary concern of breweries should be the quality of their beer, not their branding nor their size. To us, the essence of lower case letters is that they are understated and purely concerned with their content and not their treatment. We liked the link.”

Smith knew that a huge crowd of supporters wanted to be there when he opened the brewery, so he issued tickets for January 17 not wanting to end up in the uncomfortable position of turning people away because of building occupancy restrictions, fire codes, and the like. Those who do not have tickets can visit during January 18-19, over the weekend.

Smith wants everyone to know that they will be open all weekend. Lowercase Brewing intends to pour its Pale, ESB and ...More info on site

Whisky news UK: Diageo to double production at Clynelish distillery
Drinks giant Diageo plans to double production at its Clynelish distillery in Sutherland to as much as nine million litres a year as the whisky industry's expansion continues apace, The Herald reported on January 17.

Under proposals submitted to Highland Council, Clynelish, Diageo's most northerly distillery, will have an additional mash tun installed for soaking the malted barley. Another 10 washbacks will be installed for the fermentation process and six more copper stills added for distilling the spirit.

Currently, the distillery has 10 washbacks and six stills, meaning production capacity will be doubled.

A bio-energy plant is also planned for the site to help power the distillery.

Diageo will hold a community engagement session next month.

The scheme is part of a £1 billion investment programme announced by Diageo, the world's largest spirits company, in June 2012, three years after it announced the controversial closure of the Johnnie Walker bottling plant at Kilmarnock.

Its Glen Ord distillery has just received six new copper stills as part of a £25 million scheme to double capacity there.

Diageo is also doubling the capacity at the Teaninich Distillery in Alness and intends to build a new malt distillery nearby.

A bonded warehouse site is also being developed at Cluny in Fife.

Brewery news Australia: Craft brewers want to serve beer by the glass
Australia’s craft brewers who want to be able to serve beer by the glass have welcomed moves to put them on a level playing field with wineries, The West Australian reported on January 17.

Wine producers can sell wine for consumption at an approved part of their licensed premises, but beer producers have to apply for a tavern or special facility licence before they can do so.

Under the Liquor Control Act, boutique beer producers can only sell beer as packaged, takeaway liquor. But WA's independent liquor review recommends beer producers be able to sell liquor for consumption at their premises between 10am and 10pm.

Billabong Brewing licensee Alan Proctor, whose Myaree microbrewery specialises in gluten-free beer, said all he wanted was to be able to sell his product by the glass in the brewery.

Mr Proctor said his brewery could provide a free 100ml sample to customers but he would like to stay open three nights a week.

"We don't want to be a hotel, we don't want to be a tavern - all we want to be able to do is invite people in and sell them a glass of our beer," he said. "It would open up the brewery to tourists and ...More info on site

Brewery news Tanzania: Mabibo Beer Wines and Spirits Limited to consider setting up a brewery for Windhoek Premium Lager
Mabibo Beer Wines and Spirits Limited plans to embark on a feasibility study for setting up a plant in Tanga Region for brewing Windhoek Premium Larger for export markets, using local raw materials and creating jobs for Tanzanians, Daily News reported on January 14. "We have spotted a potential area in Tanga to form the second Tanga Industrial Economic Special Zone (TIESZ)," Mabibo's International Independent Consultant James Rugemalira said at a special promotion of Windhoek beer held at Makongo Juu Resort in Dar es Salaam.

He told several people who attended the occasion last week that the brewery would serve the middle and far eastern export markets, urging retailers to conduct legitimate business.

"The Windhoek Beer sales volume can only go up if bar owners and operators will stick to the price recommended by Mabibo.

We are now ready to supply Windhoek Premium Lager anywhere in Tanzania at a price of 58,000/- per carton," he said, recommending 3,000/- as the retail price of one bottle of Windhoek, except for expensive outlets that may charge a differential of 500/- for a Windhoek bottle above local beer.

Speaking at the same occasion, Mabibo's Board Chairman Benedicta Rugemalira said her company has been facing a lot of ...More info on site
