Brewery news USA: Trappist brewery launches in Massachusetts
In recent years, the simple monks of Saint Joseph’s Abbey in Spencer, MA have quietly set about building one of the biggest breweries in the state and the first Trappist brewery on American soil. Their sleek 36,000-square-foot brewery — modeled after multimillion-dollar facilities in Europe — has already made its first commercial batches of Belgian-style ale, which will go on sale next week, Bostonglobe.com reported on January 10.

It’s a big change for the monks, but it was a matter of necessity, said Brother Isaac Keeley, director of the brewery.

“In our little monastic economy, expenses were rising more rapidly than our income,” he said, standing in his monk’s robes in a state-of-the-art beer laboratory inside the brewery. “We needed to generate more income.”

And generate income it will. The Trappists aim to produce 4,000 barrels of ale this year, the equivalent of 1.3 million 12-ounce bottles, but the brewery has the capacity to generate 40,000 barrels, or more than 13 million bottles of beer.

Only a small number of people have tasted the new ale and toured the plant, situated deep within the monks’ 2,000-acre monastic compound in this Central Massachusetts town about a dozen miles west of Worcester. Although the venture has ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Lion increases its craft brewing share
In December, Lion, owned by Japan's Kirin, opened its A$60 million Little Creatures brewery in Geelong. The facility incorporates a historic building, the 1920s art deco-style former Valley Worsted Mill, Goodfood.com.au reported on January 15.

The hospitality centre emulates Little Creatures' highly successful brewery-bar-restaurant facility in Fremantle, Western Australia - making it a must-visit for anyone heading down Geelong way during the holiday period.

Lion plans to brew about 1.25 million cases of beer there, principally for east coast markets.

While craft beer accounts for a little over 3 per cent of Australia's beer market, the category is growing at 13 per cent a year. Industry sources put Lion's share of the market at 50 per cent, mainly through its James Squire and Little Creatures brands.

Australian Brewery Extra Hoppy Ale and Weihenstephaner Pilsner are two of Little Creatures brewery craft beers.

Australian Brewery Extra Hoppy Ale – this American-inspired beer, packed in an elegant, slimline can combines masses of hops aromas, flavours and bitterness with opulent, sweet malt and 5.8 per cent alcohol. It won't appeal to those seeking a cold drink on a hot day. But it'll fascinate the hop-obsessed, though the malt-hops harmony needs some work. Weihenstephaner Pilsner – in a ...More info on site

Brewery news Iceland: Whale beer production halted by health authority
The production of the so-called whale beer - the beer that contains whale meal - has been halted after the West Iceland Public Health Authority concluded that the whaling company Hvalur, which teamed up with Icelandic brewery Steðji to make the beer, is not licensed to produce bone meal for edible consumption, Ruv.is reported on January 14. The use of bone meal in food products is also not permitted according to European law.

The beer, which was intended for sale during the mid-winter festival of Þorrablót, contains whale meal, which the manufacturers said is healthy making the beer full of protein, very low in fat and with no added sugar.

The Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) sharply criticized the production of the new beer. “... Reducing a beautiful, sentient whale to an ingredient on the side of a beer bottle is about as immoral and outrageous as it is possible to get,” campaign leader Vanessa Williams-Grey said in a statement.

According to Ruv.is, one kilo of whale meal was used per 2,000 liters of beer.

Brewery news UK & China: British Craft Beers export beer to China
A Nottingham based business has been helping East Midlands microbrewers export their beers to China with the support of The University of Nottingham. The brewing science team from the University have worked with the microbrewers to increase their quality control processes, leading to greater consistency by measuring qualities such as alcohol by volume, CO2, microbial stability and shelf life, Labmate Online reported on January 11.

After a successful beer tasting trip to distributors in China, British Craft Beers has since exported the first orders of beer to merchants in Shanghai and in Chengdu, Sichuan province. The process was drawn together when Clements Marketing won a Food and Drink iNet, European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) funded project to gain a better understanding of the Chinese market, which also included support from the University’s Asia Business Centre and UKTI.

Alan Clements, Managing Director of Clements Marketing, said: “Due to the gradual decline of pubs across the UK and the domination of big brewers in the country, export markets are becoming increasingly attractive to craft brewers, and China is the world’s largest beer market claiming one in every four pints of beer sold globally.”

Research conducted at The University’s Ningbo Campus, China, identified a ...More info on site
