Spotlight back on Xanthohumol?

ABSTRACT
Xanthohumol was so to say "the medical scientists darling" for a couple of years, with excellent results in very different in vitro studies testing the effectivness in regard to prevention of cancer, osteoporosis and cardiovascular diseases. Since the promising results could not be transferred into in vivo settings the medicinal research has died down a bit. Nevertheless brewing researchers are looking for ways to increase the content of Xanthohumol and other prenylflavanoids in beer. One of these studies found that the solubility of xanthohumol was higher in sweet worts prepared from roasted malts than from Pilsen or melanoidin malts. Isomerization reactions occurring at increased temperatures is one of the main reasons for the loss of xanthohumol in the brewing process and therefore the most appropriate temperature for addition of xanthohumol products to sweet worts was found to be below 60°C. In contrast to other findings the influence of filtration and stabilization materials on the concentration of xanthohumol only showed minor effect. A second study found that the use of green hops is beneficial in regards to increasing the final content of Xanthohumol or 8-PN. However the final concentration of Xanthohumol is still in a low range of 1-2 mg/l. And the question is if these homeopathic concentrations can really be related to any health benefits.

Brewery news Canada: Sleeman Breweries Ltd. closes its Nova Scotia brewing facility
Sleeman Breweries Ltd., the Canadian subsidiary of Japan’s Sapporo Holdings, announced on November 28 that it has decided to close its Dartmouth N.S. brewing facility as of end of business on November 28, affecting 15 employees. The company made every effort to make the purchase of its Dartmouth facility attractive to potential buyers. While the company was optimistic it could sell it to another brewery operator, it has exhausted its options and could not come to terms with prospective bidders.

"We have been working for months on trying to maintain as many jobs as possible by selling the facility to a new brewery owner," says Pierre Ferland, National Vice President, Operations, Sleeman Breweries Ltd. "We want to thank our employees for their years of service to Sleeman Breweries and the patience and dedication they have shown as we tried to find a buyer. We're disappointed we couldn't find another owner and keep these jobs in Dartmouth."

Sleeman Breweries made the opportunity to purchase the facility as attractive as possible. Some of the measures the company took included a reduction in the workforce to accommodate a smaller operator, and offering to have over 350,000 cases of Sleeman products produced annually in the ...More info on site

Barley news Australia & USA: Australia’s Federal Treasurer prohibits acquisition of GrainCorp by ADM
Australian Federal Treasurer Joe Hockey announced on Nov. 28 that under the Foreign Acquisitions and Takeovers Act 1975 he is prohibiting the proposed acquisition by Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) of 100% of the shareholding in GrainCorp Limited (GrainCorp).

“For me to reject this proposal, I had to determine that the acquisition of GrainCorp by ADM is contrary to the national interest. Based on all the available information, I have now made that decision,” Hockey said.

ADM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Patricia Woertz reacted with disappointment. “We are confident that our acquisition of GrainCorp would have created value for shareholders of ADM and GrainCorp, as well as grain growers and the Australian economy. Throughout this process, we worked constructively to create an arrangement that would be in Australia’s best interests and made substantial commitments to address issues that were important to stakeholders.” Woertz confirmed there were no conditions or undertakings requested of ADM by the treasurer. Concerning ADM’s plans for its current investment in GrainCorp, Woertz said, “As owner of 19.85 percent of GrainCorp, we will look to work with them to maximize returns on our investment and create value for both companies.” ADM’s proposal was first ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: Lethbridge barley prices remain in a narrow trading range, the trend is expected to continue
Lethbridge barley prices have remained in a narrow trading range for most of November, and it's expected the current range of C$180-C$185 per tonne will likely continue in the near term, Commodity News Service Canada reported on November 28.

"We've been seeing Lethbridge barley remain relatively steady," said Jim Beusekom, grain broker at MarketPlace Commodities at Lethbridge, noting prices declined heavily earlier in the fall due to extremely good production across the Prairies.

"Periodic spurts of demand from the end user will push it up to the C$185 range, while a lot of selling from the producer brings it back down to the C$180 level, so it's a fairly balanced market."

Domestic demand remains fairly solid in the Lethbridge area, he said, due to barley's favourable price.

"Domestic demand is really good for feed barley, mainly because it is the cheapest commodity they can buy today," he said. "Secondly, cattle on feed numbers are quite decent as well. I'm not trying to suggest they're really high, but there is good demand from the feedlot."

According to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's November crop report, domestic barley usage is expected to run to 6.461 million tonnes during 2013-14, up from 6.262 million the previous year.

Brewery news Canada & Asia: British Columbia brewers expanding interests in Asia
Two British Columbia craft brewers are expanding their interests in Asia, including the biggest beer market on the planet: China, The Vancouver Sun reported on November 28.

Surrey-based Russell Brewing has just opened a brewery and two restaurants in Hefei, China with Chinese venture partner FVI Capital. "This will be a chain of brew pubs using Russell's brand and Russell technology," said Ben Yu, Russell's interim CEO.

Senior brewer Kevin Wilson has spent the last several weeks training staff and running test batches in the new brewery, which is now operational. The brewery is designed to produce enough beer to serve up to four restaurants.

Russell secured a 20 per cent stake in the new company, Russell Breweries China Inc., as part of a technology and licence trademark deal that includes a royalty paid to Russell based on the volume of beer produced. China consumes more than 50 billion litres of beer annually, but the small-batch artisanal beer styles that are now familiar to Canadians are virtually unknown there, according to Yu.

"Craft beer is really new to Chinese consumers," said Yu. "The Chinese beer market is very much like North America was 15 or 20 years ago. It is highly competitive at the ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Black Creek Historic Brewery offers Historic Beers of Canada
On November 28 Black Creek Historic Brewery announced the release of the Historic Beers of Canada Gift Pack now available in select LCBO stores. The gift pack contains beer representing the first four decades of Black Creek Historic Brewery's 'Historic Beers of Canada' series, a lineup of the twelve distinct beers that represent each consecutive decade of Canadian and brewing history. All the beers are brewed from Canadian sourced hops and malt, according to Canada NewsWire.

The four bottles in the gift pack include:

Rifleman's Ration: A light bodied brown ale that commemorates the years 1810 to 1819, to mark the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812. It has a full natural flavor and a wonderful lemony tang.

Dray Horse Ale: A full bodied brown ale that represents the era of canal building from 1820 to 1829. During this time many of Canada's canals were being built. The motive power required to pull barges through the recently completed canals of Upper and Lower Canada was provided by large powerful dray horses.

Montgomery's Courage: A rye pale ale that represents the decade from 1830 - 1839, when there were revolts against unjust government rule in both Upper and Lower Canada. This amber ale is ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Tight Lines Brewing Company moves a step closer
The new owners of the former Rap’s Grill and Bar are moving forward with their plans for a craft beer brewery at the downtown location in Morehead city, Carolinacoastonline reported on November 27.

A company called Klew LLC purchased the property in September. The firm, which will operate as Tight Lines Brewing Co., last week received the city planning board’s unanimous approval of a request to amend city codes to add “microbrewery” as a defined special use in the downtown business district. The request now goes to the city council for final approval.

The proposal defines a microbrewery as a small facility that produces less than 15,000 barrels of beer per year. It may also include a tasting room and retail space to sell the beer to patrons on site and may be affiliated with an attached restaurant.

Russell Lewis, a partner in Klew LLC with his mother, Betty Sue Stroud, and stepfather Joe Stroud, said the project had been in works for a long time.

Lewis said plans are to renovate the existing restaurant and open in February or March 2014. The owners hope to start building the beer facilities in September 2014 and begin brewing by November or December of that year.

Brewery news Canada, BC: Central City opens a new brewery in Surrey
It’s been 10 years since Central City opened its brewpub in downtown Surrey, BC. Now, the brewery is set to expand.

On November 29, Central City Brewers debuted a new big facility, 65,000 square feet, according to Straight.com.

While the original location had a brewing capacity of 7,500 hL, the new location can produce 25,000 hL. In the next few years, the brewery hopes to increase production to 100,000 hL, and it comes equipped with bottling and canning lines.

The original Central City Brewpub and Restaurant will continue to operate in its present location. However, it will only produce small batches of craft beer. The majority of production will shift to the new facility.

Brewery news USA, OH & KY: MadTree Brewing Company launching its products in Northern Kentucky
Beer drinkers in Northern Kentucky will soon be able to enjoy beers from MadTree Brewing. The brewery will launch in Boone, Kenton and Campbell counties next week.

Happy Amber, PsycHOPathy and Gnarly Brown will be available in those counties, according to brewery co-owner Kenny McNutt.

More accounts, and more beers, will be added in the next few weeks, he said.

The Northern Kentucky launch is possible because of last week’s addition — two 60 bbl fermenters.

It’s the second expansion for MadTree, which started brewing January 22: In September, the brewery added two 60 bbl fermenters, a 60 bbl brite tank and a centrifuge for clarification and to increase the per batch yield, McNutt said.

All in all, in 10 months, the brewery has added 267 percent capacity — from an annual capacity of about 2,500 bbls to about 10,000 bbls.

Brewery news USA, NH: Stoneface Brewing Company coming to Newington
Peter Beauregard and two silent partners are preparing to open Stoneface Brewing in warehouse space in Newington, NH. It is a prominent location in terms of visibility, Seacoastonline.com reported on November 29.

Beauregard said he and his partners hope to tap into the rapid growth of the brewery tourism industry that he sees taking place throughout the Seacoast.

Beauregard, a Dover resident and Stoneface's head brewer, envisions the business growing larger than a nanobrewery, defined as one that sells no more than 2,000 barrels of beer a year. It will begin with the Stoneface IPA, he said.

Beauregard said he is hopeful the brewing process can begin before the end of the year.

Those who visit Stoneface will be able to buy 4-ounce tasters or fill a growler to go. Beauregard said the tasters will be a good way to test out some of the new flavors he and his partners hope to unveil.

The bulk of their business will be selling to stores and restaurants in the area. Beauregard said they are reaching out to local businesses in hopes of getting a foot in the door, and are looking to sell their beer in Maine and Massachusetts as well.

For Beauregard, seeing his vision come ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI & PE: Bell’s Brewery expands its presence in Pennsylvania
Bell’s Brewery announced on November 27 it will expand its distribution in Pennsylvania to include 15 additional counties in the north and central regions of the state, according to Brewbound.com.

The company has inked a distribution agreement with Durdach Brothers Inc. to sell its year-round and seasonal offerings throughout the 15-county footprint, beginning in March, 2014.

“This new partnership fills in a large portion of the state of Pennsylvania and we are thrilled to be able to offer our beer to fans in these additional counties,” Laura Bell, the brewery’s vice president said in a release.

The move comes just two days after the company said it would begin selling its beer in New York City with Union Beer Distributors — part of the L. Knife & Son group of wholesalers – next February. Bell’s tapped three other L. Knife & Son-owned companies (T.J. Sheehan Distributing, Tri-Valley Beverage and Craft Guild of New York) for distribution in Upstate New York last month.

Bell’s will also begin canning the popular Two Hearted and Oberon ales in April of next year.

Brewery news Namibia: Namibia Breweries to take over the equipment and brands of craft brewer Camelthorn Brewing
Namibia Breweries is set to take over the equipment and brands of the financially troubled micro brewer, Camelthorn Brewing, All Africa reported on November 28.

"Namibia Breweries is not planning to take over the brewery but rather planning to purchase the brewing equipment and established brands," Managing Director Wessie van der Westhuizen said.

The two companies are in the final stages of an agreement that will see Namibia Breweries taking over Camelthorn and also paying part of the debt the company owes the Development Bank of Namibia, The Namibian learnt from sources familiar with the deal agreement.

Van der Westhuizen said the deal between the two companies was subject to approval by the Namibian Competition Commission. Early this month, the High Court granted a default judgement in favour of the Development Bank of Namibia (DBN) to attach the assets of the Windhoek-based Camelthorn Brewing over a debt of N$11.8 million with interest, which the brewing company has failed to honour. On November 26, Camelthorn founder Jörg Finkeldey declined to comment when asked about the talks with Namibia Breweries. The court authorised the Deputy Sheriff for Windhoek to take, on behalf of the DBN, all moveable assets including machines, stock and work in progress, ...More info on site

Brewery news Jamaica: Red Stripe’s cassava plans stalled because of delays in sourcing land for the crop
Plans by brewery Red Stripe Jamaica to use local cassava as input for its beer appear to have stalled in gestation because of delays in sourcing land for the crop, The Gleaner reported on November 29.

Red Stripe chairman, Richard Byles, says six weeks after approaching the Ministry of Agriculture for lease of agro-park lands, no lots have been allocated.

Lands in agro-parks developed by Government to enhance productivity are made available to local producers at concessionary rates.

Red Stripe indicated in early November that it was going ahead with the plan to replace imported American corn with locally grown cassava by 2016.

For the company corn currently makes up 40 per cent of the imported raw material input, while malt from Europe makes up the remaining 60 per cent.

"We can't get the lease, which is really crazy," Byles said, while addressing a PIOJ forum on November 26.

Noting that the cost of imported inputs were growing more expensive as the dollar declines in value, he said substituting cassava would reduce the costs of manufacturing Red Stripe.

"We want to do this, but six weeks later, we can't get a lease for land that Government owns."

Efforts at comment from the Ministry of Agriculture on the delay ...More info on site

Brewery news Belgium: Second-largest brewer Alken-Maes to increase prices as from February
Belgium’s second-largest beer maker, Alken-Maes, has announced a decision to increase the prices of its products as from February 15. The increase will amount to 1.5 eurocents per glass of its standard beers and a little more for its specialty beers, L’avenir.net reported on November 28.

The industry leader, AB InBev, made a similar announcement earlier this month.

Alken-Maes, the most popular brands of which include Cristal, Maes, Grimbergen, and Affligem, justifies the price hike by willingness to continue investing in innovations and in the HoReCa sector.

For specialty beers, the average price increase per glass will be less than 2 eurocents, the company said.

Barley news Australia: Compass becomes highest yielding barley variety
Early results from the Birchip Cropping Group's barley variety trials have put Compass on the map, Weekly Times Now reported on November 28.

The mid maturing variety yet to be made commercially available to growers has topped yields at both the BCG's Quambatook and Watchupga East trial sites.

Compass yielded 5.24 tonnes a hectare at the Quambatook site, ahead of Fathom on 5.1 tonnes/ha, Latrobe on 4.93 tonnes/ha and Hindmarsh on 4.9 tonnes/ha.

BCG research manager Simon Craig said yields at the Quambatook site were exceptional this year, aided by a narrow band of rain in March.

Craig said the site was on fallow and was well managed, though the dry summer and autumn meant it was difficult applying enough nitrogen to get the crops off to a good start.

The Quambatook trial was part of a larger disease tolerance study, with some plots sprayed with fungicide and others left unsprayed.

More results are expected.

Craig said barley crops sown on fallow were generally about one tonne/ha better off than those sown into a stubble.

At Watchupga East, Compass plots yielded 3.49 tonnes/ha, followed by Fathom on 3.36 tonnes/ha, Commander on 3.28 tonnes/ha and Hindmarsh well back in sixth spot on 3.13 tonnes/ha.

Craig said the Watchupga East experiments ...More info on site

Brewery news Rwanda: Bralirwa stops brewing and marketing Guinness
Bralirwa, one of Rwanda’s leading brewers, has stopped the production and marketing of Guinness beer as its contract with East African Breweries had expired, New Times reported earlier this week.

According to a statement by the company, East African Breweries will be handling the brand itself from now on, ending the collaboration that started in 1989.

The change in administration may lead to an increase in the price of Guinness, as East African Breweries does not own any production facility in Rwanda.
