Spotlight back on Xanthohumol?

ABSTRACT
Xanthohumol was so to say "the medical scientists darling" for a couple of years, with excellent results in very different in vitro studies testing the effectivness in regard to prevention of cancer, osteoporosis and cardiovascular diseases. Since the promising results could not be transferred into in vivo settings the medicinal research has died down a bit. Nevertheless brewing researchers are looking for ways to increase the content of Xanthohumol and other prenylflavanoids in beer. One of these studies found that the solubility of xanthohumol was higher in sweet worts prepared from roasted malts than from Pilsen or melanoidin malts. Isomerization reactions occurring at increased temperatures is one of the main reasons for the loss of xanthohumol in the brewing process and therefore the most appropriate temperature for addition of xanthohumol products to sweet worts was found to be below 60°C. In contrast to other findings the influence of filtration and stabilization materials on the concentration of xanthohumol only showed minor effect. A second study found that the use of green hops is beneficial in regards to increasing the final content of Xanthohumol or 8-PN. However the final concentration of Xanthohumol is still in a low range of 1-2 mg/l. And the question is if these homeopathic concentrations can really be related to any health benefits.

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Czech craft beer makers doing well at home and looking to export their products
There's an old saying in the Czech Republic that if a Czech's goat dies, he won't pray for another but rather that his neighbour's goat will die too. And so it was in the 1990s when even though many Czechs were weary of the limited choice from the large brewers that had dominated under communism, they spitefully boycotted an upstart called Stanislav Bernard and his new "honest, traditional unpasteurized beer", Business New Europe reported on November 25.

But today Bernard is having the last laugh. He eventually won over the recalcitrant locals to create one of the country's largest independent breweries, and in doing so helped foster an industry that has boomed to the point where Czech craft beer makers are now looking to export their products around the world.

In November, Two Tales, a microbrewery based outside Brno, began bottling what it hopes will fill an obvious gap in markets around the world for Czech craft beers. "No matter where you go in the world, you can say that Czech beer has a great image… but there has been a lack of opportunity for people to buy it – we're the first [Czech microbrewer] to get out there," says ...More info on site

Brewery news India & USA: United Breweries Group to invest $2 mln in its US-based loss making brewing company
Liquor baron Vijay Mallya-led UB Group has decided to infuse $2 million in a US-based loss making firm Mendocino Brewing Company to revive its fortunes, The Economic Times reported on November 25.

UB has also agreed to "favourably consider additional investment to underpin growth based on detailed business plan to be submitted in due course" by Mendocino, the company said in a regulatory filing.

UB's readiness to invest in the US firm comes even as the group's Kingfisher Airlines in India remains grounded for over a year due to severe financial problems.

Mendocino Brewing Company (MBC), in which United Breweries Holdings Ltd (UBHL) holds 68.1 per cent stake and another group firm United Breweries of America has 24.5 per cent equity, has exclusive licence to brew and distribute Kingfisher Premium Lager beer in certain foreign markets.

UBHL is also the holding company of all the listed entities of Mallya-led UB Group, including Kingfisher.

According to Mendocino's regulatory filing with the US markets regulator SEC, UBHL has agreed "to commit an initial funding of $2 million in four half yearly instalments with the first instalment to be remitted expeditiously."

The investment is being made to "protect and enhance the value of its existing investments in MBC," the ...More info on site

Brewery news Georgia: Beer and spirits expected to record the fastest category growth by 2017
Sales of Georgian alcoholic beverages are expected to grow fast, according to a recent Euromonitor International summary. The main threat to stable growth of the market is a possible delay in the economic recovery in the country, but this is not very likely. The categories which are expected to experience the fastest growth by 2017 are beer and spirits.

Sales of spirits and beer grew much faster, with beer witnessing its strongest growth in 25 years.

“Georgian consumers have gradually switched from wine to various other spirits, in particular, vodka. Traditionally, Georgians would drink mainly wine during so-called “supras” - traditional festivities, where people consume numerous Georgian dishes and make different toasts.

However, in recent years, Georgian consumers have gradually decreased the amounts of food consumed and instead focus on smaller quantities of stronger spirits. As a result, sales of vodka increased visibly in 2012. As long as the imported and local vodka brands are priced similarly, imported brands prevailed in the preferences of local consumers, because Russian and Ukrainian vodka have a better image,” says the report.

32,425 thousand litres of alcoholic drink were exported from Georgia in 2013 with a total value of USD 139,126 thousand. As for in 2012, ...More info on site

Brewery news Haiti: Haiti’s leading beer maker Brana is modernizing
Brasserie Nationale d’Haïti S.A (Brana) has presented its new high-tech bottling line to the international standard, which will allow now 54,000 cases of Prestige beer per day instead of 24,000 with previous installations, Haiti Libre reported on November 24.

In addition, Laurent Lilavois, Prestige brand manager, presented the new image of the national beer.

The brewery was taken over by Heineken in December 2011. The Dutch brewing giant increased its shareholding in Brasserie Nationale d'Haiti from 22.5 to 95% and invested 40 million U.S. dollars in the operation.
