50 ways to... measure antioxidant activity in hops

ABSTRACT
Serbian researchers looked into the comparison of electrochemical versus spectrophotometric assessment of antioxidant activity of hop components. In conclusion, in contrast to the most commonly applied spectrophotometric antioxidant assays (DPPH, radical scavenging of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, FRAP, ferric reducing antioxidant power and ABTS, scavenging of 2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) the recently developed DC (direct current) polarographic assay recognizes humulone as a superior antioxidant in comparison with various hop phenolics. This is an additional evidence on bitter acids efficiency as antioxidants, indicated in recent literature, and suggests that their contribution to total antioxidant activity of complex hop samples should not be neglected. Hop H2O2 scavenging activity positively correlated with the content of humulone and total resins, and negatively with hop storage index. So the DC polarographic assay might be a good addition for the routine analyses in the brewing industry!

Brewery news Canada: Change in law is needed to allow Canadians to take beer and spirits across provincial borders
Every day thousands of Canadians buy beer and spirits in one province and consume them in another. According to the Importation of Intoxicating Liquors Act, a Prohibition-era statute, they are all breaking the law, Economist reports.

The chances of being caught are negligible. There are no checkpoints between provinces. Indeed, you can pass from one to another without knowing it. Federal prisons are not exactly bursting with offenders. Dan Albas, an MP from British Columbia who managed to get wine removed from the act last year, said at the time it had never been enforced. Nevertheless, it is the law of the land.

Perhaps not for much longer. Buried in the myriad pledges the Conservative government led by Stephen Harper made in its speech from the throne on October 16 was a promise to amend the Act once again to allow Canadians to take beer and spirits for their own use across provincial borders.

Cynics say that the Conservatives have zeroed in on beer drinkers ahead of the general election in 2015—not a bad idea in a country where the tipple accounted for 44% of the C$21 billion Canadians spent on alcohol last year. (Wine accounted for 31%; other alcoholic beverages made up ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Ballast Point starts construction of $12 mln brewing facility in California
After nearly two years of searching, Ballast Point has finally found a home for its new 150-barrel brewhouse, Brewbound reported on November 4.

The San Diego-based craft brewery announced on November 4 that it has begun construction on a $12 million brewing facility in the Miramar district of San Diego. It will house a German-designed brewhouse which Ballast Point purchased in 2012. The new brewery is capable of being scaled to 350,000 barrels, but Ballast Point’s vice president of sales and marketing, Earl Kight, said initial capacity will only be about 50,000 barrels.

“It will be much easier to add tanks at this location,” he said, comparing the new space to Ballast Point’s current “Scripps Ranch” headquarters.

Ballast Point already has three locations in San Diego. Its main production facility, in the San Diego neighborhood of Scripps Ranch, is capable of producing about 80,000 barrels. The company’s Home Brew Mart and Little Italy locations primarily serve as testing grounds for experimental brews, Kight said. Ballast Point has a 15-barrel brewhouse at its Home Brew Mart location and a 5-barrel brewhouse at its Little Italy Tasting Room & Kitchen.

“Right now, we are at capacity,” Kight said. “Increasing production will allow us to expand our ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Coronado Brewing Company releases Stupid Stout
Stupid Stout, a seasonal American Imperial Stout, is again making its way to craft beer drinkers across the country beginning mid October through January 2014 as part of the Southern California brewer’s Crown Series. This American Imperial Stout was originally brewed by Coronado Brewing Co. in 2008 as an English Stout, then returned with a new West Coast recipe in 2011 to eager fans loving what president and co-founder Ron Chapman affectionately calls “a stupid amount of hops”, Brewbound reports.

This year’s Imperial Stout is a great winter companion and appeals to craft beer lovers who appreciate deep, dark, robust and chocolaty flavors with a bright hint of hop freshness. Stupid Stout will be available in 14 states where Coronado Brewing is sold as well as its pub restaurant in Coronado and tasting room in San Diego. Also on tap will be barrel aged small batch of Stupid Stout.

Stupid Stout is sold in Canada and in 14 US states: California, Hawaii, Nevada, Arizona, Washington, Oregon, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, New York.

Barley news Canada: Lethbridge barley prices may see further lows depending on price movements in other markets
Lethbridge barley saw a slight bump in prices the last few weeks, but Jim Beusekom, grain broker at Marketplace Commodities in Lethbridge, said prices could see further lows depending on the price movement of other feed markets, Alberta Farm Express reported on November 5.

"Through the second half of October, we've seen the market rally just slightly in Lethbridge," he said. "Prices moved upwards about C$5 a tonne. That's our grand rally, or about as close as we can get to a rally this year."

Beusekom said the boost was due to growers holding back on selling after they finished harvest activities.

"Following harvest, it's pretty normal that farmers like to hold back," he said. "Actually, I wouldn't even say they're holding their grain back. After you're done harvest, probably the last thing a farmer does the day after he parks his combine is start to load trucks."

According to the Alberta Canola Producers Commission, Lethbridge barley during the week of Oct. 28 was priced at C$185 per tonne.

"Lethbridge is trading in the C$180 to C$185 per tonne range right now," said Beusekom. "That's what feedlots are paying. Farmers can defer their sales to January, February or March and pick up C$3 or C$4 ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Anchor Brewing Company announces release of its annual Christmas Ale
Every year since 1975 Anchor has brewed a distinctive and unique Christmas Ale, which is available from early November to mid-January. The Ale’s secret recipe is different every year, as is the tree on the label, but the intent with which Anchor offers it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life, according to Brewbound.

“Here at Anchor, we strive to capture the spirit of the holiday season with our annual Christmas Ale,” said Mark Carpenter, Brewmaster at Anchor Brewing. “Much like Christmas morning, everyone anxiously awaits for the day that they can finally crack open a bottle of Christmas Ale and see what this year’s ale is going to taste like. We don’t just change the recipe and the label each year for change sake, each year we are trying to improve and make the best spiced ale we can make. We think beer lovers will be pleased when they taste the complex, spiced flavors of the our 2013 Christmas Ale.”

The Ale’s label is the beautiful California White Fir. It was hand drawn by local artist James Stitt, who has been creating Christmas Ale labels for Anchor Brewing Company since 1975.

Brewery news USA, CO: Left Hand Brewing releases Fade to Black 5, brings back volumes 1-4
Fade to Black winter series is brewed for the time of year when the light fades away. It speaks in volumes, introducing a new volume each year in Left Hand’s renowned series. The fifth year calls for something special. Left Hand is bringing the first four volumes back to life alongside the volume 5 release, TheFullPint.com reports.

The Fade to Black series first entered the market in 2009 with the introduction of Volume 1 – Foreign Export Stout, bringing home a Gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in its first year. The following years have introduced Volume 2, a handsmoked Smoked Baltic Porter in 2010, Volume 3 – Pepper Porter in 2011 featuring Chipotle, Serrano, & Ancho chiles, all deseeded by brewery hands and last year’s Volume 4 – Rocky Mountain Black Ale. All four styles have been re-brewed and packaged for the 2013 winter season. In its first return since 2009, Volume 1 took GABF gold again making it a double medaled beer.

In addition to the revival of Fade to Black Volumes 1-4, Left Hand has also released Volume 5 – Black Rye Ale, the newest installment in the winter series. Volume 5 is a deep dark brown ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Funk Brewing Company opening soon in Emmaus
Funk Brewing Co. LLC opens its microbrewery in Emmaus in January. The company plans to sell and produce different beers, which are half-gallon refillable bottles known as growlers, Lehigh Valley Business reports.

"Our business model is to package kegs to sell to bars and restaurants," said Kyle Funk co-owner.

The company leased 2,775 square feet of flex space at 23 S. Sixth St. in Emmaus, PA and will have an additional 4,000-square-foot fenced parking lot, said Jay Haines, vice president of NAI Summit in South Whitehall Township. The lease will be for 38 months.

Funk Brewing will have a 15-barrel system. One barrel is equivalent to 31 gallons.

"We'll be able to produce 465 gallons per batch," Funk said.

A batch typically takes two to three weeks to create from start to finish, he added.

Beers include an India Pale Ale, Blonde Ale, Pale Ale and rotating seasonal beers.

The company hired a full-time brewer and two-part time bartenders. Funk and another partner own the business, Funk said.

"I have a pretty deep passion for craft beer," he said. "The craft beer market has taken off over the past five years. More young people are getting into it. It's exploding."

The company plans to team up with a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Karl Strauss Brewing Company opens its eighth location, comes to Temecula
Karl Strauss Brewing Company officially opens its eighth and largest brewery restaurant on November 5 at 40868 Winchester Road in Temecula, CA. This follows a four-month, nearly $2-million renovation to the building, Patch.com reports.

“The building sat empty for three years so we are excited to be here, it’s a great corner,” said Jeff Schroeder, vice president of Karl Strauss’ Brewery Restaurants division about the location.

Schroeder said the company joins a growing number of craft brewers in Temecula.

“This will increase awareness of the craft beer community,” Schroeder said. “The beer business is super familial; it is really more like a club than a competition.”

Founded in San Diego in 1989, Karl Strauss has brewery restaurants in Downtown San Diego, La Jolla, Sorrento Mesa, Carlsbad, Costa Mesa, Universal CityWalk and 4S Ranch.

Karl Strauss opened the 4S Ranch location, near Rancho Bernardo in San Diego County, in 2012 after nearly a decade spent increasing production and distribution.

The Temecula brewery restaurant offers an inroad to the Inland Empire, said Melody Daversa, public relations and advertising manager.

“We didn’t have anything in this area so this is exposing people to who we are,” Daversa said. "We are excited to join the Temecula brewing community and ...More info on site

Barley news USA, ID: Idaho breeder seeks to introduce barley to new growing areas
Idaho barley breeder Gongshe Hu at the USDA's Agricultural Research Service in Aberdeen is expanding his program to find barley lines suitable for fall planting in the cold climate near Idaho Falls, as well as spring lines better adapted to high elevations near Tetonia, according to Capital Press.

This fall, Hu, with the USDA’s Aberdeen Agricultural Research Service, started a new irrigated fall barley test plot in Idaho Falls, partnering with a local farmer.

In his effort to introduce fall barley to new growing areas, he’s supplemented his own program’s germ plasm with cold-tolerant material from Germany, Minnesota and elsewhere.

“It has a higher yield,” Hu said of fall-planted barley. “We think (fall) barley has the market.”

Hu also has fall barley plots on dry land in Soda Springs — a cold, high-elevation climate — and in milder southern Idaho climates in Filer and Aberdeen. Hu said he’s tested for winter hardiness for the past two years in Soda Springs but had sparse data this season due to poor dry-land germination.

Hu expects to release a new fall malting barley variety within three years to replace the industry standard, Charles. He’s been working closely with the American Malting Barley Association, which has recommended three ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Saint Arnold ready to distribute its craft beers in Florida
Saint Arnold Brewing Co., the oldest craft brewery in Texas, has finalized agreements with distributors in Florida and will enter markets along Florida’s Gulf Coast in November. Florida is just the fourth state where Saint Arnold beers are available, joining Texas, Louisiana and Colorado, Brewbound reported on November 4.

Saint Arnold, which is named for Saint Arnold of Metz, the patron saint of brewers, is ranked 45th on the Brewers Association list of top craft breweries. It operates out of a 104,000 square foot 3-story brick building originally constructed in 1914. Saint Arnold’s brewhouse was imported from Klosterbrauerei Raitenhaslach, a Bavarian monastery.

“We’ve been serving beer enthusiasts along the Gulf Coast for nearly 20 years – first in Texas and for the past three years in Louisiana – and we think we’ll fit right into the markets along Florida’s Gulf Coast,” said Saint Arnold Founder/Brewer Brock Wagner.

Saint Arnold inked agreements with Coastal Beverage Ltd., Gold Coast Eagle Distributing, Great Bay Distributors Inc., Lewis Bear Company, Peace River Distributing, Pepin Distributing Company, Suncoast Beverage Sales and Tri Eagle Sales. The agreements pave the way for Saint Arnold’s expansion into Gulf Coast Markets from Pensacola to Naples, Florida.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Craft brewery to be launched in Sault Ste. Marie early next year
A craft brewery, Union Jack Brewing Company, is being launched early in the new year in Sault Ste. Marie.

The recent Naturallia conference, hosted by the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation and the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre, helped the brewery with its testing, Local2.ca reported on November 2.

Head brewer, Jeff Jack, a local emergency room RN by day and night, had produced seven different prototypes, and the conference attendees were asked to help work out a flagship product.

“In talks with the LCBO and The Beer Store, they’ve suggested that we concentrate on one flagship product to launch in their stores, and this conference was the perfect venue to focus our attention,” said Union Jack Brewing President and local pharmacist, Jordan Jack.

As the City looks to revitalize the west end of Queen Street and Gore, this comes at an opportune moment.

"We’re hoping to use Sault Ste. Marie as a sort of beer incubator,” said Jeff. “We feel that what works here should be transferable to the rest of the province. Although we do not intend to open a bar on site, we will encourage the public to come down and try my latest creations.”

Brewery news USA, RI: Foolproof Brewing Company to distribute beer in Connecticut
Foolproof Brewing Company’s beers, available in cans and drafts, are now being distributed in Connecticut by Northeast Beverage Corporation of Orange, Connecticut, The Providence Journal reports.

Foolproof, which began selling its beers in Rhode Island in January 2013, doubled its brewing production capacity in April and expanded distribution into Massachusetts in May. Connecticut is now the third state to carry the fledgling brewery's beers. The brewery is located on Grotto Avenue off Mineral Spring Avenue in Pawtuckett, RI.

Foolproof produces three year-round beers, Barstool, an American golden ale; Raincloud, a porter; and Backyahd, an IPA. They will be available in draft and 12-ounce can format across Connecticut.

Brewery news USA, VA: Back Bay Brewing to open brewery in Virginia Beach
Back Bay Brewing Co., nearly a year old, has never made beer in the city that inspired its name. Starting in January, it will, co-founder Joshua Canada was quoted as saying by Hamptonroads.com on November 4.

Pending federal regulatory approval, Back Bay will open a small brewery and tasting room by late January in a building that used to house Wave Riding Vehicles on Norfolk Avenue in Virginia Beach, Canada said.

"We're all from Virginia Beach," he said of the partners in the business. "We want to have our local footprint."

Back Bay first made its beer at the Weeping Radish brewery in Grandy, N.C., and now does at St. George Brewing Co. in Hampton, he said.

Brewery news Australia & USA: Coca-Cola Amatil signs “long-term exclusive” distribution agreement with Boston Beer
Coca-Cola Amatil (CCA) said on November 4 it has signed a “long-term exclusive” agreement with The Boston Beer Co to distribute its Samuel Adams brand in Australia.

Group Managing Director, Terry Davis said, “We are pleased to announce that we have entered into a long-term exclusive agreement to distribute America’s largest selling craft beer, Samuel Adams, into Australia from mid-December. The Boston Beer Company is America’s leading brewer of handcrafted, full-flavoured beers and has won more awards in the last five years than any other brewery in the world.

Our line-up will include the Molson Coors premium beers including Blue Moon and Coors and a full range of Rekorderlig ciders in both bottled and draught from January 2014.”

Brewery news UK: Heineken confident of spirit beer category growth
Heineken has announced that it is set to build on its support for tequila flavoured premium lager Desperados next year with a multi-million pound marketing campaign, The Drum reported on November 5.

The announcement of the £6 mln campaign, which will look to further awareness and encourage trial of the drink amongst 18-25 year olds, comes shortly after Heineken appointed Work Club to handle the global digital brief for the brand.

Most likely, agencies have not yet been appointed to handle the campaign.

Martin Porter, sales director off-trade at Heineken, said: “We have seen an explosion of new fruit flavours within the Cider category and the emergence of the Speers (spirits and beers) segment within beer and lager, responds to consumer demand for new and exciting beer drinking experiences.

“The meteoric growth of Desperados has been integral to the health and development of the Speers category and the brand continues to drive growth and rising value sales. Desperados is a brand that shoppers actively seek out and, as such, the brand is not reliant on promotions to drive rate of sale. We are committed to nurturing the brand in a sustainable way and we will be launching a marketing programme in 2014 in order ...More info on site

Brewery news Belgium: Belgian Brewers to launch domestic beer advertising campaign
Beer aficionados worldwide know that Belgium makes some of the very best, from fruity red Trappist brews to the famous Hoegaarden wheat beer. At home in Belgium, though, beer is an increasingly tough sell, Bloomberg reported on November 1.

Alarmed by a 17 percent drop in domestic consumption over the past decade—even as revenue from beer exports more than doubled—Belgian brewers are set to launch an advertising campaign urging their countrymen to drink local beers. “You can’t be the king of export and have a bad internal market,” says Sven Gatz, director of the Belgian Brewers trade association.

Details of the ad campaign, which will be launched in the next few weeks, haven’t been announced yet. But Gatz said the goal is “to position beer as part of the quality of life, as an element of Belgian pride.”

Belgium’s situation mirrors declining consumption in traditional beer-drinking countries including Germany and the Czech Republic. While wine consumption in Belgium has risen slightly in recent years, most beer drinkers aren’t switching to other alcoholic beverages, Gatz says. They’re simply drinking less alcohol, and more mineral water, coffee, and soft drinks.

The rest of the world still loves Belgian brews, though. The country’s beer exports have soared ...More info on site

Brewery news Belgium: AB InBev announces new beer price hike
AB InBev has announced a new price hike planned for February 1, 2014, Le Soir reported on November 5.

Even if the increase is only 1.5 eurocents per 25 cl glass, it may lead to a further beer budget tightening among the population. In fact, this is already the fourth beer price increase over the last four years.

Beer consumption in cafes is already 4.5% lower than last year, it is reported.

AB InBev’s leading brands in Belgium are Jupiler, Stella Artois, Hoegaarden and Leffe. Its main competitor, Alken-Maes, has not made any decision on price adjustment yet.

Brewery news Japan: Growing craft beer scene in Japan
There are four major beer brands in Japan. All four taste pretty much the same though. Each of the Japanese most popular beers are European-style lagers, which isn't too surprising when you learn that all four breweries were founded in the late 19th century with the help of German brewmasters, Mercurynews.com reports.

In 1908, Japanese lawmakers set the minimum amount a brewery must produce to qualify for a license at 18,000 hectoliters, or slightly more than 15,000 barrels, a move that kept smaller breweries from being a viable part of Japan's brewing industry. In the United States, a microbrewery is defined as one producing less than 15,000 barrels a year. Japan raised that benchmark even higher -- to 20,000 -- in 1959.

Everything changed in 1994, when the Japanese licensing standard was finally lowered to 600 hectoliters or roughly seven barrels, allowing smaller breweries to compete for the first time. Today, there are about 270 breweries in Japan, many making very flavorful and distinctive beers.

One of the first craft breweries in Japan is the Kiuchi Brewery, which makes the Hitachino Nest Beers. It was founded by Mikio Kiuchi, who inherited his family's sake brewery in 1950. When the law changed to allow ...More info on site

Brewery news New Zealand: Craft beer on the rise in New Zealand
New Zealand is in the midst of a global beer brewing revolution, with more and more people looking to craft beers to quench their thirst, according to Tvnz.co.nz.

Invercargill brewer Steve Nally says he has increased production 150% in the past five years.

"I think people just want a change," Nally said.

"It's a cyclical thing, big brewers have commanded a lot of the market for a lot of time."

International beer expert Mirella Amato, who has been in New Zealand this week, says the secret to Kiwi craft beer brewing success is the local ingredients.

"The hops that are grown here, which are quite distinct, and the fact that in New Zealand you're brewing all kinds of different styles using New Zealand hops and how it transforms those styles," she said.

And as the craft beer industry takes off, it's up to people's taste buds to keep up.

Amato has been encouraging and teaching Kiwis to explore, identify and describe the flavours of local brews. She says the balance of flavours in a beer can make or break it.

"There are a lot of brewers who are excited about these bold flavours and hops and crazy alcohols and just trying to cram in as much flavour as ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: Carlsberg, Heineken and the University of Adelaide testing new barley variety Charger for the second year
The second year of commercial trials are underway in South Australia for a new variety of barley, Charger, developed in a three-way partnership with Carlsberg, Heineken and the University of Adelaide, Farm Weekly reported on November 5.

Now being distributed via Australian Grain Growers Co-operative, it follows almost nine years of work with the beer companies to test and develop a variety particularly suited for Australia –drawn from their patented Null-LOX barley, which was created in Europe in 2001 through cross-pollination to brew beer with a longer shelf life.

University of Adelaide barley program leader and Associate Prof Jason Eglinton says the Australian variety has more Gairdner heritage in it than anything else bred here.

"But really, it doesn't bear any specific resemblance to Gairdner and it's not really a product of any obvious varieties," he said.

The first commercial trials were harvested in 2012-13 from a single grower in the Mid North, but now there are up to 15 farmers in locations ranging from Serviceton, Vic, to Jamestown, growing a crop that is expected to reach about 4000 tonnes this harvest.

"This is just the first production from it and it is very good for a first variety," Prof Eglinton said.

"It's been pretty stable ...More info on site

Brewery news New Zealand: Moa shares drop after NZ$6 million loss forecast announcement
Moa boss Geoff Ross says the up to NZ$6 million full-year loss forecast by the craft beer brewer reflects the "triple hit" the company received from a sales shortfall in New Zealand and its subsequent move to a new distribution model in this country, The New Zealand Herald reported on November 5.

"You get the lack of volume that triggered the distribution change in the first place, the [sales] lull that you undergo before your new distribution model kicks in and the buy-back of any stock that the [former] distributor has had," Ross said.

"We could have chosen not to make a change ... but we thought that, overall, it was better to bite the bullet and move to the model we now have."

Auckland-based Moa, which brews its beer in Blenheim and listed on the NZX last November, on November 4 confirmed its annual sales volumes for the 12 months to the end of March 2014 would be 136,000 cases, 30 per cent less than the 195,000-case target in its initial public offer prospectus.

The drop was largely due to sales shortfall in New Zealand, which the company has blamed on its former distributor.

Moa is forecasting a full-year loss of NZ$5 million to ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: SABMiller South African strike finishes, output not much affected
Global brewer SABMiller reached a wage deal with more than 2,000 workers in South Africa on Tuesday, November 5 ending a five-week strike that had little impact on beer production, Reuters reports.

SABMiller, which is also listed in Johannesburg, said it had agreed to raise wages by 7 percent, plus performance-related pay, back-dated to July 1.

"I was proud of the resilience of the majority of our employees during this difficult period who worked together to ensure the impact on our operations was minimised," said Mauricio Leyva, head of the brewer's domestic unit.

Workers led by the Food and Allied Workers Union were initially demanding a 9.5 percent wage hike and for the company to do away with performance-related pay.

The pay settlement, which raises the average monthly pay to just over 18,000 rand (£1,120), is above an inflation rate of about 6 percent and reflects similar accords across Africa's biggest economy.
