Brewery News
Hong Kong: Tsingtao says H2 earnings jump 76.9%
Tsingtao Brewery Co. Ltd., China's second-largest beer maker, posted a 76.9 percent
rise in second-half earnings as it struggled to protect margins and fought foreign
entrants in China's beer market, Reuters reported April 20. Tsingtao – 27
percent-owned by top U.S. beer maker Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. and maker of China's
most famous beer brand – is battling for market share from global players SABMiller,
Heineken and Carlsberg while fighting to protect margins in a country where a 640-ml
bottle can cost just 12 U.S. cents. China's beer market is the largest in
the world by volume and grew nearly 15 percent in 2006, the third consecutive year
of double-digit volume growth, according to Anheuser-Busch, and Tsingtao hopes next
year's Olympics will further spur sales. The market reached 307 million
hectolitres in 2005. Tsingtao said on Thursday it earned 235.1 million yuan
(US$30.47 million) for the six months ended Dec. 31, 2006, versus 132.9 million yuan
a year earlier. The result beat an average forecast of 175.71 million yuan,
according to Reuters calculations based on 14 analysts polled by Reuters Estimates.
The Chinese brewer said its net profit for 2006 was at 447.9 million yuan
versus 306.6 million yuan a year earlier. Beverage-to-retail giant China

Belgium: AmBev’s voluntary offer to purchase all Quilmes Industrial’s outstanding shares expired
InBev announces the expiration of AmBev’s voluntary offer to purchase all outstanding
shares of its subsidiary Quilmes Industrial S.A. (“Quinsa”), according to InBev’s
press release, April 20. InBev confirms that AmBev announced the final results
of the previously announced voluntary offer made by Beverage Associates Holding Ltd.
(“BAH”), a Bahamian corporation and a wholly-owned subsidiary of AmBev, to purchase
up to 6,872,480 Class A shares and up to 8,661,207 Class B shares (including Class
B shares held as American Depositary Shares (“ADSs”)) of its subsidiary Quilmes Industrial
(Quinsa), Société Anonyme (“Quinsa”). The Offer expired at 5:00 p.m., New York City
time (which is 11:00 p.m. Luxemburg Time), on Thursday, April 19, 2007. At
the expiration of the Offer, 2,535,448 Class A shares and 1,618,379 Class B shares
(including Class B shares held as ADSs), representing 0.63% of the voting rights
of Quinsa, had been tendered in and not withdrawn from the Offer. The minimum tender
condition of the Offer, which required that 3,939,387 Class B shares (including Class
B shares held as ADSs) be validly tendered and not validly withdrawn, was not satisfied
and as a result, the Offer expired and will be withdrawn without BAH purchasing any

Czech Republic: Budejovicky Budvar welcomes EU’s ruling against Anheuser-Busch
A European Union trademarks authority has rejected a request by Anheuser-Busch
Co. to register its Budweiser trademark throughout Europe - a victory for Czech
brewer Budejovicky Budvar in the latest round of its global legal battle with the
US beer giant, according to The Associated Press, April 20. An appeals council
of the Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market rejected Anheuser-Busch's
application last week, saying the Czech company has "proven rights to the international
trademark Budweiser'," according to a statement released by Budvar yesterday.
Anheuser-Busch first applied for the trademark at the EU trademarks authority,
based in Alicante, Spain, in 1999 and Budvar objected to the move. The office ruled
in Budvar's favour in 2005 and Anheuser-Busch appealed that decision. Last
week's ruling is final, but Anheuser-Busch can challenge it with a lawsuit against
the trademarks authority at the EU's Court of First Instance in Luxembourg, Budvar
said. "The latest ruling by OHIM is another key success for us," Budvar
spokesman Petr Samec said. "A victory for Anheuser-Busch could theoretically complicate
the use of our Budweiser' trademarks, which we have registered in a number of European
Union countries," Samec said. Anheuser-Busch did not immediately respond
to an e-mail seeking comment. The two brewers have been

Philippines: Asia Brewery considered to be taken public
Philippine billionaire Lucio Tan plans to list Asia Brewery Inc., the country's
second largest beer producer, to raise funds for expansion and is looking at
a possible IPO next year, Reuters reported April 19. Tan, the Philippines'
third-richest man with a net worth of $2.3 billion according to Forbes magazine,
declined to tell reporters on Thursday how much would be raised in a listing.
Asia Brewery has about 10 percent of the local beer market, a source from the
Tan group of companies told Reuters. Its biggest rival is Southeast Asia's largest
food and drinks group, San Miguel Corp. , which dominates Philippine beer sales.
Tan, who made his fortune on cigarettes and beer in the 1970s and 1980s
during the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos, set up Asia Brewery in 1982. The
firm has two breweries in the Philippines, with a combined annual capacity of 6 million
hectolitres of beer, and several units in China. Other firms that are majority-owned
by Tan include Philippine National Bank , Allied Banking Corp. , holding firm MacroAsia
Corp. , Philippine Airlines and the unlisted Fortune Tobacco.

Malt News
EU: There was no spectacular malt purchase action reported during March
There was no spectacular malt purchase action reported during March, and the large
groups Inbev, Heineken, Carlsberg and SAB stayed on the sidelines. But regular business
went on, altogether for good quantities, domestically and for export. Malt
prices remained stable, local prices for delivery 2008 in the range of EUR 375,-
to 380,-, CPT breweries, and EUR 385,- to 390,- FOB seaport, in bulk in container
for destinations abroad. Besides there was still a fair amount of business
in old crop malt for delivery in 2007 at prices in the 450,-/470,- range, depending
on parity. Maltsters seem unwilling to step away from their safety policies, whereby
they sell malt only against a corresponding barley cover. Malting margins range from
EUR 100,- to 120,- per ton, mostly at the higher end of the range.

Barley News
EU: Old crop barley is appearing in the market in bits and pieces
Markets have reacted in a small way to the favourable planting season. Old
crop barley is appearing in the market in bits and pieces, the total offer is minimal.
French 2rs barley, basis July 2006, FOB Creil, is offered at EUR 215,-/218,-,
Danish 2rs barley, April, FOB seaport is EUR 228,-/230,-, UK 2rs, same parity,
EUR 225,-. New crop barley traded: French 2rs Sebastian, July 2007,
FOB Creil 179,-, Danish 2rs, October, Fob seaport EUR 179,-. As maltsters
do not leave their sales uncovered, they also purchase crop 2008 barley for the remainder
of the calendar year, i.e. beginning of the new crop year. French 2rs, basis
July 2008, FOB Creil, traded at EUR 170,-/171,-, Danish 2rs barley, October 2008,
FOB seaport, at EUR 175,-.
