Western Europe: SABMiller scotches rumours of bid for Scottish & Newcastle
Global beer giant SABMiller said on Thursday it does not find the West European
beer market attractive after it had been linked with a takeover of Scottish and Newcastle,
Reuters reported April 12. SABMiller's Chief Financial Officer Malcolm Wyman
did not comment directly on Scottish and Newcastle, Britain's biggest brewer, but
added that the group saw the West European beer market as "singularly unattractive"
due largely to its slow volume decline. He added that the West European beer market
is "not an area we find attractive" in a conference call after issuing a trading
statement to cover its financial year to March 2007. SABMiller poured cold
water on speculation that it is considering a bid for Scottish and Newcastle yesterday,
sending shares in Britain's biggest brewer down 2 per cent, News Independent communicated
on April 13. Shares in Scottish & Newcastle have been frothing on talk that Heineken,
Diageo, Carlsberg and SABMiller were all interested in making a move, and it has
gained 13 per cent since the end of March. The comments came as SABMiller,
which brews Miller Lite and Peroni, said lager volumes grew 23 per cent globally
in the year to the end of March, with organic growth at 10

Russia: Heineken denies the strike at the brewery
A Russian trade union said production had slowed at Heineken's brewery in St
Petersburg after management refused to grant a 30 percent wage hike and improve working
conditions, Reuters reported April 13. The plant's union leader Valery Sokolov
told Reuters on Friday workers at the brewery were working to rule and avoiding overtime,
though Heineken denied there was a strike and said the plant in Russia's second largest
city was working normally. "The strike is now going on. Some of the workers
are taking part, dozens of people, as well as drivers, which the plant can't operate
without. Brewing volumes are down and the production lines are going slowly," Sokolov
said. Heineken denied there had been a slowdown in output. "Production
is in full swing and going according to plan. We have no reason to say that any actions
have taken place", Anna Meleshina, spokeswoman for Heineken in Russia. "We have a
normal working day. The word 'strike' is out of the question." The union
says monthly wages at the plant, which employs 1000 people and produces some 40 million
decalitres, are between 16,000 roubles and 18,000 roubles ($620 and 700). Heineken
says the average wage is around 31,630 roubles

UK: Scottish & Newcastle to produce Baltika beer in Great Britain
In the Edinburgh Castle, President of Baltika Breweries Anton Artemiev and Director
of Scottish & Newcastle Plc. John Nicolson signed a License Agreement to start
production of the brand Baltika №3 Classicheskoye beer in Great Britain, Baltika
announced in a press release, April 12. Beginning in May 2007, Russia’s
number one beer brand will be produced and filled in 0.33 liter glass bottles at
the Camerons Brewery in the city of Hartlepool. At the signing ceremony
of the Agreement, Anton Artemiev said, "The start of licensed production in Western
Europe of Baltika, one of Russia’s most popular brands, is a natural step in the
process of integrating Russia into the world economy." The selection of
Baltika №3 brand is the result of extensive research into consumer preferences.
More than half of those polled consider Baltika to be an integral part of Russian
culture and the most popular Russian brand in Great Britain. At the end of 2006,
more than 500,000 liters of Baltika №3 had been sold in Great Britain.
Baltika №3 is positioned in Great Britain in the segment of International
Specialty Beers (or World Beers) and has a premium price positioning. The brand is
intended for cosmopolitan consumers who are open to

World: SABMiller recorded 23% growth in lager beer volumes for the year to 31 March 2007
For the year to 31 March 2007, SABMiller Plc recorded 23% growth in lager
volumes, with strong organic growth of some 10%, according to group’s press release,
April 12. Group financial performance was in line with management’s expectations
as good revenue growth was partially offset by higher input costs and increased investment
across the business. The calculation of the group’s organic growth includes
volumes for South America from 12 October 2006, 12 months after it became part of
the group. On a pro forma basis, South America lager volumes for the year
rose by 12% with growth accelerating in the final quarter to 14%. Strong performances
across the region reflect good economic conditions, improved market shares and the
impact of initiatives to rejuvenate the beer category. These initiatives include
brand renovations and launches, the introduction of new containers and significantly
increased investment in marketing and merchandising at the point of sale. In Colombia,
improved retail price discipline has underpinned accelerating sales. In Peru, Cristal
was relaunched in December 2006 and has led our share gains in a market that remains
competitive. In Central America, carbonated soft drink (CSD) volumes were up 6% and
lager volumes up 8% on an

Japan: Japan remains a nation of beer drinkers
Recent government data confirm that Japan remains a nation of beer drinkers, with
beer and beer-like beverages accounting for nearly two thirds of the 9 billion liters
of alcohol consumed last year, Japan Times reported April 13. Makers of
cheaper nonmalt drinks known as "third-category beers" also toasted a surge in sales.
Overall wine consumption grew significantly for the first time in many years, and
customs data indicate that France, Italy and the United States accounted for the
lion's share of the gains. Imports from down under fell sharply however, dropping
Australia two notches to sixth place in the ranking of global wine suppliers to Japan.
One advantage of alcohol's highly regulated status is that detailed government
data are available -- albeit with some delay. Each spring, the National Tax Agency
releases per-capita liquor consumption data for the previous fiscal year ending March
31 (better late than never, we suppose), and the Ministry of Finance's Customs Bureau
announces final import numbers for the just-concluded calendar year. Over
the last fiscal year, the average adult consumed nearly 60 liters of beer and quasi-beer.
While the 2006 totals were only marginally down from 2005, the aggregates masked
large, tax-driven changes within the sector. According to

Czech Republic: Poor barley harvests threaten beer quality
Home grown barley that’s a key ingredient in Czech beer is a delicate, fickle
crop, and has suffered through tough growing seasons in recent years, Prague Post
reported April 11. Czech beer is widely renowned as being among the world’s
best, and natives would certainly agree. Common estimates cite Czechs as the globe’s
heaviest beer drinkers, tipping back some 160 liters (336 pints) per person each
year. Increasingly unreliable barley harvests have left Czech brewers with two choices:
import barley and raise beer prices, as Pilsner Urquell manufacturer Plzeňský
Prazdroj did last year, or lower their standards and make beer from lower-quality
barley. At two research centers in Moravia, scientists have been quietly working to
find ways to reduce risk of a bad harvest. At the Agricultural Research
Institute in Kroměříž, south Moravia, researchers are experimenting with
growing a strain of “naked,” or hull-less, barley, which could create a hardier crop
that also produces higher yields for use in malting and making beer. Such strains
have been grown for years in North America, mostly for feeding livestock, but have
not been sufficiently tested in Czech soil and climates. And, at the Research Institute
of Brewing and Malting in Brno, researchers have been

Australia: Promising new Victorian barley variety still undergoing commercial malting and pilot brewing trials
The Chairman of the Western Region Barley Council (WRBC) Steve Tilbrook said the
promising new variety was still undergoing commercial malting and pilot brewing trials,
and farmers should have no expectations at this stage, Seed Quest reported April
12. Mr Tilbrook said Buloke’s grain yield was very competitive against Stirling,
Hamelin, Gairdner and Baudin. “In statewide variety evaluation trials conducted
by the Department of Agriculture and Food over the four seasons of 2003 to 2006,
it out yielded Baudin and Gairdner by six per cent, and Hamelin and Stirling by ten
per cent. It also has a better over-all disease resistance package than the other
four varieties,” Mr Tilbrook said. “There is understandably strong interest
in Buloke. However, Barley Australia is still carrying out commercial acceptance
trials, and there are many decisions yet to be made. There should be no expectation
that Buloke will be accredited as a malting barley, and no expectation that it will
be received as a malting barley in Western Australia,” Mr Tilbrook said. “Once
trials are complete, the WRBC will review the results and their implications for
WA,” he said. “It will then be up to member companies such as the Grain
Pool, Joe White Maltings and Kirin Australia to
